Kingsley Kanu’s passwords stay on a home server because he runs Vaultwarden, a non-official Bitwarden-compatible server, and connects to it with official Bitwarden apps. That gives him control over where the server runs, but it also makes him responsible for backups, recovery, server maintenance and compatibility risks. His setup is one person’s approach—not a security audit or a recommendation for every household.

What “my passwords no longer leave my house” means

Kanu describes a vault database stored on hardware he controls at home. His browser, desktop and mobile Bitwarden clients connect to the server URL he operates. In his reported setup, Vaultwarden uses a SQLite database, runs in Docker/LXC, and Traefik handles TLS termination. Those are details of his deployment, not requirements or specifications for every Vaultwarden installation.

As Kanu put it, “My password vault runs on a box in my house now.” Read Kanu’s account.

This arrangement changes where the server and its stored database are located; it does not mean every password-related operation happens only inside the home. Clients connect to the server, and the setup still depends on software, network access and the operator’s maintenance and recovery choices.

Three ways to run a Bitwarden-compatible vault

Option Server location control Operations and updates Client compatibility and support Backups and recovery Cost evidence
Hosted Bitwarden The service provider operates the server; the user does not choose a home server location. The provider operates the service. Official Bitwarden clients are designed for Bitwarden’s service. The user is not operating the server database and its infrastructure. No current total-cost figure is established here.
Official self-hosted Bitwarden The operator chooses where to deploy the official server. The operator handles deployment and server operations; requirements vary by deployment path. See Bitwarden’s deployment documentation. It is Bitwarden’s official server, distinct from a third-party reimplementation. The self-hoster must implement backups and recovery. See Bitwarden’s backup guidance. No current total-cost figure is established here.
Vaultwarden The operator chooses the server location, such as home hardware. The operator maintains the third-party server and its deployment. Bitwarden says it expects much client functionality to work with non-official servers, but does not guarantee perfect operation and may offer limited support for client issues. See its third-party compatibility guidance. The operator is responsible for backups and recovery. Kanu reported a comparison of roughly $40 a year with a paid Bitwarden option; the year and current applicability are not verified, so this is not a current price.

Bitwarden documents an official self-hosted server as well as its hosted service. That official option should not be conflated with Vaultwarden, which Kanu describes as a Rust reimplementation of the Bitwarden server API.

What you take on when you self-host

Keep the database recoverable

The vault database is the essential store in Kanu’s account. He says he configured daily snapshots before relying on it, then maintained an encrypted off-site copy using rclone and Backblaze B2. This is his reported method, not independent confirmation that the backups can be restored.

UGREEN NAS DH2300 2-Bay for Beginners & Personal Users, Phone Backup
  • Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
  • Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
  • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
  • Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

A copy kept in the same building can be lost in the same house-level disaster as the server. Bitwarden’s backup guidance says self-hosters need their own procedures and should regularly back up important data, including configuration and database-related data; the details depend on the deployment method. Plan and test recovery, not just backup creation.

Maintain the server and its dependencies

With a server in your home, you are responsible for keeping the deployment operational and applying updates. Kanu reports using Docker/LXC and Traefik, but those components do not remove the need to understand the system or recover it when something fails. A server that is unavailable can also leave clients unable to reach the vault until service is restored.

Allow for client changes

Bitwarden’s compatibility guidance is cautious: it expects much functionality to work with non-official servers, but cannot promise that every client feature will always work perfectly and may limit support for issues involving them. Client and server versions can change. Check the current compatibility guidance and keep the server maintained rather than treating compatibility as assured.

Encryption claims need the right boundary

Bitwarden says its official clients encrypt or hash data locally before transmission, and describes vault data in its official cloud and official self-hosted product as end-to-end encrypted. Its encryption documentation specifies AES-CBC with 256-bit keys and HMAC-SHA256. These are Bitwarden’s statements about its documented product; they are not a security evaluation of Vaultwarden and do not establish that a particular home deployment is secure. See Bitwarden’s security documentation and encryption details.

Using official Bitwarden clients with Vaultwarden does not turn Vaultwarden into Bitwarden’s official server. Likewise, choosing a home location does not by itself establish that the server, network, backups or recovery process are secure.

How to decide whether this trade-off fits

  • Choose based on location control: Hosting at home gives you more control over server location than using a hosted service.
  • Account for operational work: If you do not want to maintain a server, updates and backups, a self-hosted arrangement may not suit you.
  • Weigh compatibility and support: Vaultwarden may work with official clients, but Bitwarden does not guarantee flawless compatibility or full support for non-official servers.
  • Make recovery part of the plan: Decide where backups will live and how you would restore both the database and necessary configuration.
  • Compare actual costs: Kanu reported around 50 MB resident for his Vaultwarden configuration and roughly $40 a year as a comparison with a paid Bitwarden option. Neither figure is a general benchmark or verified current price; the cited material does not establish a current total-cost model.

For Kanu, keeping the vault database on hardware he controls was worth the responsibility of maintaining it. Whether that trade-off makes sense for you depends less on the idea of a home server than on your willingness to keep it updated, compatible and recoverable.
