The safest way to keep LEGO La Catrina (set 21372) dust-free is to reduce exposure first: place the finished model in a well-fitting display case, keep the case away from heat and direct sunlight, and remove any remaining dust with a clean, very soft brush and almost no pressure. Do not wipe across the marigolds, printed sugar-skull decoration, butterflies, or poseable joints as if they were a flat surface.
La Catrina is a large display model—The LEGO Group lists 1,212 pieces and a height of over 17 inches (43 cm)—so cleaning it while assembled requires more control than washing loose bricks. LEGO’s official washing instructions apply to individual pieces, not to a fragile, fully built display. Use the procedure below to prevent dust while avoiding stressed connections, scratched prints, moisture, heat, and color damage.
Why La Catrina needs a gentler cleaning plan
La Catrina combines a tall structure with small, exposed details. The LEGO product description calls out brick-built marigolds, printed sugar-skull decorations, a monarch butterfly, and poseable head and arms. Those parts can catch dust, but they can also move, flex, or detach if you press a cloth or brush into them.

Treat the advertised height as the minimum vertical space your display plan must accommodate, not as a reason to force the model into a tight enclosure.

Use a case as the primary dust-control measure
A fitted enclosure prevents most airborne dust from reaching the build, which is more reliable than repeatedly brushing an exposed model. An acrylic listing specifically made for LEGO Ideas La Catrina 21372 is available from Wicked Brick. The seller states that the case surrounds the model, includes a base cut-out for the model’s stand, and keeps dust away. That is a qualitative seller claim, not a published dust-reduction measurement or an independent test.
Check clearance before ordering
The listing gives external dimensions of 35 × 19 × 48.3 cm, but it does not state the internal clearance. Before buying any case, measure your completed model rather than relying only on the set’s box or instructions.
- Measure from the lowest part of the stand or base to the highest point of the crown, head, or any raised detail.
- Measure the greatest front-to-back depth, including the poseable head, arms, flowers, and butterfly elements in the position you intend to display.
- Measure the widest point from side to side. Include parts that overhang the base or angle outward.
- Compare those measurements with the case’s usable interior, not just its outside dimensions.
- Leave working room around projecting details so they do not touch the acrylic when the model is placed inside or removed.
- Confirm that the stand and any base cut-out align with your version of the build. A case made for the set can still be unsuitable if the model has been modified.
If the interior dimensions are not published, ask the case maker for them before ordering. A tight case can transfer pressure to decorative elements and make routine dusting harder.

Install the model without stressing it
- Place the empty case on its final, level surface before inserting La Catrina. Moving a case after the model is inside increases the chance of a collision or shifted base.
- Inspect the model and gently reconnect any visibly loose pieces while it is still in the open. Do not use the case to hold a leaning or unstable section in place.
- Support the stand or the strongest part of the base with both hands. Avoid lifting by the head, arms, flowers, butterfly, or another decorative section.
- Lower the build slowly, watching the highest and widest points as they pass the case walls.
- Check that no part touches the top, sides, door, or rear panel. If anything contacts the enclosure, remove the model and reassess the case size rather than forcing the lid shut.
- Close the case according to the maker’s instructions and check that the base remains flat and the model has not shifted.
Choose a stable, low-dust display location
Case or no case, placement affects how often you need to handle the model. Put the display on a level, sturdy surface away from vents, open windows, cooking areas, and places where people frequently brush past it. Air movement carries dust into recesses and makes an exposed build dirty sooner.

Keep the model dry and away from heat. LEGO’s storage guidance says bricks should be stored somewhere dry and away from heat, and warns that direct sunlight or temperatures above 40°C can make bricks brittle or discolored over time. Do not place the case on a radiator, beside a heater, in a hot vehicle, or where afternoon sun falls directly on it.
Sunlight is a long-term exposure issue even when the room feels comfortable. If the display receives strong daylight, move it farther from the window, use a blind or curtain, or rotate the display location so the model is not continually illuminated from one direction.
Prepare the right tools before touching the build
For routine dust removal from an assembled model, use a clean, very soft-bristled brush. A soft artist’s brush or makeup brush is a reasonable category; secondary guidance such as this practical LEGO-care guide recommends gentle brushing around delicate parts. That advice is not a LEGO-prescribed or independently tested procedure, so inspect the tool and use the lightest effective touch.

- Keep one brush for the LEGO display rather than using a tool that has touched makeup, paint, cleaning chemicals, or dusty household surfaces.
- Have a clean, dry work area ready before moving the model.
- Use your hands to support the base or another sturdy structural section; never use a brush handle or cloth to push a loose element back into place.
Avoid starting with a vacuum, compressed air, paper towel, rough microfiber, or wet wipe. Suction and air blasts can move small parts, while rough or damp materials can drag dust across prints and trap moisture in joints.

How to dust an exposed La Catrina safely
Dust only when the model is stable and you can see what the bristles are touching. Work in short sessions instead of trying to clean the entire figure in one hurried pass.
- Wash and dry your hands. Clean hands reduce the transfer of skin oils and grit. Wait until they are completely dry before handling the build.
- Inspect before brushing. Look for loose bricks, tilted flowers, a shifted butterfly, or a poseable joint that is not seated correctly. If a section is unstable, support it and repair it from the instructions before dusting that area.
- Secure the base. Hold the stand or a broad, sturdy portion of the base with one hand. Do not brace the model by pressing a finger against a printed face or flower.
- Start at the highest, least delicate surfaces. Use light, one-direction strokes so falling dust lands on areas you have not yet cleaned. Let the bristles do the work; do not scrub back and forth.
- Move from large structural areas to small details. Brush broad, solid sections first, then reduce the pressure and stroke length as you approach flowers, prints, joints, and overhangs.
- Clean recesses indirectly. Angle the brush so dust is lifted out rather than driven deeper between bricks. If a cavity cannot be reached without bending a part, leave it rather than forcing the brush into it.
- Pause after each section. Check whether a piece has shifted. Re-seat only a part that you can reach securely, and support adjacent structure while doing so.
- Finish with the base and display surface. Remove loose dust from the area around the model so it is not immediately blown back onto the build. Replace the case or return the model to its display position without gripping decorative parts.
Handle La Catrina’s delicate zones differently

When washing is appropriate—and when it is not
LEGO’s official cleaning guidance is written for LEGO pieces. It says: “We recommend that you clean your LEGO® pieces by hand using water no hotter than 104°F / 40°C and a soft cloth or sponge.” Mild detergent is optional, followed by rinsing in clean water.
That advice does not turn an assembled La Catrina into a washable object. Do not pour water over the finished model, soak it in a sink, or work a wet cloth into the joints. Moisture can remain between connected pieces and around printed or poseable elements, where it is difficult to inspect and remove.
If a loose piece genuinely needs washing, separate it only if you can do so without destabilizing the surrounding build. Wash the individual piece by hand in water at or below 40°C, use a soft cloth or sponge, rinse it with clean water, and allow it to dry fully before rebuilding. Keep removed pieces organized so the model is not left partially dismantled for longer than necessary.

LEGO explicitly warns: “Please do not put your LEGO® pieces in the washing machine or dishwasher, and do not try to dry them in the oven, microwave or with a hair dryer.” These methods can expose plastic and decorated parts to damaging heat, movement, or chemicals.

Clean the outside and inside of the enclosure only when the model is protected from accidental contact. If the case has removable panels, follow the manufacturer’s removal instructions and place each panel on a soft, clean surface. Never rest an acrylic panel directly on a gritty tabletop.
Use the case maker’s care instructions for the panel material. Before applying any cleaner, verify that it is approved for that acrylic or plastic; an unknown solvent can cloud or craze a panel. Do not spray liquid toward the model. Apply any approved product to the cleaning cloth as directed, keep the cloth away from open seams, and let the panel dry before closing the enclosure.

If dust is inside the case, remove the model only when you have a stable, protected location ready. Support the stand during removal, and use the same inspection and brushing sequence described above. A case is useful only if opening it does not create more handling risk than the dust problem you are trying to solve.

What to do when something goes wrong

A practical maintenance routine
For a cased model, inspect the enclosure and the build whenever you are already nearby. If you see dust on the case, clean the panel using its approved care method before opening it. Open the enclosure only when dust has reached the model or a visual inspection shows that a delicate area needs attention.
For an open display, inspect the model under good light and brush visible dust before it forms a thick layer. Keep sessions short, start with the stable base and larger surfaces, and stop immediately if a connection shifts. The goal is controlled, infrequent handling—not a daily polishing routine.
After any move, check the poseable head and arms, the butterfly, the marigolds, the printed sugar-skull elements, and the stand. These are the areas most likely to reveal a shifted part or contact problem after the model has been repositioned.
Limits of the available evidence
LEGO publishes temperature limits, hand-washing instructions for pieces, and storage warnings about heat and sunlight. It does not publish a dusting protocol for a fragile assembled La Catrina display. The soft-brush method is a cautious practical recommendation from secondary care guidance, not a LEGO endorsement, a comparative laboratory test, or proof that one brush is the safest possible tool.
No published source establishes a percentage reduction in dust from a particular case or compares brush types. A case is therefore best understood as a physical barrier that reduces exposure, while brushing is a careful way to remove dust that still gets inside or reaches an open model.
