Keep a legacy-system knowledge graph accurate by treating every code change as a scoped update problem: identify changed program elements, extract the dependencies they affect, revise the corresponding architecture relationships, inspect downstream impact, validate the proposed graph delta against code and other artifacts, and run regression checks. Record each graph revision against the repository state that produced it, and send ambiguous mappings to a domain expert.

There is no published universal refresh interval or staleness threshold for legacy knowledge graphs. “Accurate” must be defined for your use case: complete entities, correct relationships, freshness after a commit, or usefulness for a particular maintenance decision.

Define what “accurate” means for your graph

A graph cannot be maintained consistently until its claims and quality target are explicit. Write down the entities, relationship types and evidence expected for each fact. A modernization graph might contain programs, source files, functions, transactions, modules, database tables, schemas, jobs, messages and external interfaces. A maintenance graph may need only call, data-read, data-write and deployment relationships.

  • Coverage: whether the components and artifacts that matter to a decision are represented.
  • Relationship correctness: whether an edge such as “calls,” “writes,” or “depends on” is supported by current evidence.
  • Freshness: how soon the graph reflects an accepted repository change.
  • Impact usefulness: whether traversing the graph finds the components and tests a maintainer actually needs to inspect.
  • Provenance: whether a reader can see which revision, artifact and extraction rule produced a fact.

Set local targets for these dimensions. The available publications do not establish a generally accepted staleness SLA, allowable error rate or production-quality threshold, so label any numbers as your team’s policy rather than an industry standard.

Model code and non-code artifacts in an adaptable ontology

Legacy behavior is rarely documented in source alone. Data definitions, schemas, copybooks, configuration, batch schedules and interface specifications can determine what a program means. IBM Research describes a customizable ontology and knowledge graph for combining legacy application languages, platforms and artifacts in a modernization workflow: Incremental Analysis of Legacy Applications Using Knowledge Graphs for Application Modernization (8 January 2022).

Start with a minimal schema and extend it only when a maintenance decision requires another concept. For each entity, store a stable identifier, repository path or artifact key, language or platform, and the source revision where it was observed. For each relationship, store its type, direction, extraction method, confidence or review state, and evidence location such as a line range, schema field or configuration entry.

Keep structural and semantic claims distinct. A parser may establish that procedure A invokes procedure B, while only a subject-matter expert can confirm that both implement the same business transaction. Mark inferred business meaning as a candidate until reviewed.

Use a versioned baseline before processing changes

Build a baseline graph from a known commit or release and reconcile it with relevant non-code artifacts. Save the repository identifier, commit hash, parser and ontology versions, artifact manifests, extraction settings and review status. A baseline that cannot be recreated makes later differences impossible to explain.

When source and schema disagree, retain both observations and flag the conflict instead of silently overwriting one. For example, a table column removed from a schema while an old program still references it should produce a conflict edge requiring investigation. This is safer than deleting the program relationship because a deployment may still depend on the old schema or a generated copy may be out of date.

Process each code change as a graph delta

Do not rebuild the entire estate for every commit unless the change is broad enough to invalidate global assumptions. A change-driven workflow narrows analysis to changed blocks and the relationships that may cross their boundaries. Wang, Kong, Wang and Li describe incremental software-architecture recovery driven by code changes, including dependency-strength analysis and a mapping from code-level changes to architecture-level updates. Their evaluation covered 10 open-source projects; the authors report better effectiveness and efficiency than compared techniques in that setting, not a universal result for every legacy estate: An incremental software architecture recovery technique driven by code changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Capture the change set. Record the old and new commit, changed files, added, removed and modified blocks, renamed symbols, changed schemas and configuration, and generated artifacts. Treat a rename or moved block as a possible identity change rather than as an unrelated delete and add.
  2. Extract local dependencies. Re-parse changed blocks and their immediate callers, callees, data accesses, imports, message routes, inheritance links and build or deployment references. Include dependencies introduced by changed SQL, copybooks, configuration keys and generated code.
  3. Map code changes to architecture concepts. Determine which module, transaction, service, batch job, table or interface each changed element represents. A changed helper may affect a single module; a shared schema or message contract may cross many architectural boundaries.
  4. Assign dependency strength. Distinguish direct calls from indirect configuration links, shared data, runtime-discovered routes and heuristic similarities. Store the rule and evidence behind the strength so reviewers know which edges deserve priority.
  5. Generate a proposed graph delta. Add, remove or update only the entities and edges supported by the change. Preserve old facts as historical revisions when they explain a previous release; do not erase history to make the current view look clean.
  6. Traverse the affected boundary. Follow incoming and outgoing dependencies to find consumers, producers, shared resources, interfaces and tests. IBM’s workflow uses interactive views around logical boundaries to examine how a change in one part may affect other parts.
  7. Validate, test and publish. Check the proposed facts against code and artifacts, route uncertain mappings for review, run impact-appropriate regression checks, then publish the graph revision with provenance.

Choose full rebuilds and incremental updates deliberately

Approach Best use Advantages Risks and controls
Full rebuild Initial inventory, parser or ontology changes, large refactors, or suspected widespread drift Provides a coherent snapshot and can discover relationships missed by earlier rules Expensive; may create noisy identity changes. Compare against the prior graph and review high-impact differences.
Incremental re-analysis Routine commits with a bounded set of changed files or blocks Faster feedback and a smaller review surface; aligns effort with likely impact Can miss hidden runtime or shared-data effects. Expand traversal for shared schemas, reflection, configuration and generated code.
Hybrid refresh Normal incremental updates plus scheduled reconciliation Combines quick commit-level updates with periodic detection of drift No universal schedule exists. Choose an interval based on release risk, change volume and analysis cost, and document it as local policy.

A parser, language migration or ontology change can alter the meaning of every extracted fact. In that case, treat the operation as a new baseline or a carefully versioned migration, not as an ordinary file-level delta.

Represent change propagation, not just changed files

A link from a commit to a file is useful for audit but insufficient for impact analysis. Preserve the dependency types that explain how a change can propagate: calls, reads, writes, publishes, subscribes, inherits, implements, loads, configures and deploys. Add temporal validity when a relationship exists only during a release or schema version.

For each changed entity, inspect both directions:

  • Incoming edges: callers, jobs, services, messages, tables or configurations that rely on the changed element.
  • Outgoing edges: resources and interfaces the element invokes, reads, writes or emits to.
  • Shared boundaries: schemas, queues, files, environment variables and generated interfaces that connect otherwise separate modules.
  • Test links: unit, integration, contract, batch and operational checks associated with the affected behavior.

Temporal-graph work has specifically examined software-system interactions and change propagation, providing a useful conceptual model when relationships vary by version or time: To change or not to change? Modeling software system interactions using Temporal Graphs and Graph Neural Networks: A focus on change propagation (Information and Software Technology 166, February 2024). Use such models as an analysis aid; they do not remove the need to verify the resulting facts in your system.

Validate every proposed delta

Validation should test both syntax and meaning. A graph can be internally consistent while still describing the wrong business relationship.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Automated consistency checks

  • Every edge endpoint resolves to an entity that exists in the same or an explicitly compatible revision.
  • Deleted or renamed symbols do not retain current edges unless an identity mapping documents the move.
  • Call, import, read and write edges agree with the parser’s current output for the changed files.
  • Schema and code references use compatible names, types and versions, or carry an explicit conflict.
  • Duplicate entities created by aliases, generated files or case differences are merged or flagged.
  • High-impact edges have evidence locations and an extraction or review status.

Semantic and architectural checks

Compare the proposed delta with module boundaries, transaction definitions and known interfaces. Ask whether a new edge crosses a boundary that normally requires an API or message contract, and whether a removed edge is actually replaced by configuration, reflection or generated code. The 2026 IEEE framework for LLM-assisted software-engineering knowledge graphs explicitly includes graph quality assurance, semantic deduplication and incremental adaptation. Its reported improvements—12.3–18.7% relation-extraction F1 and 40–60% lower end-to-end training cost against strong baselines on CodeSearchNet, Stack Overflow and GitHub Issues—are results for that framework and those corpora, not guarantees of legacy production-graph accuracy: LLM-Assisted Industrial Knowledge Graph Construction and Quality Assurance for Software Engineering: Low-Resource Information Extraction and Dynamic Evolution.

Use impact analysis to scope regression testing

Impact analysis identifies likely consequences; regression testing checks whether the changed system still behaves acceptably. An IEEE taxonomy paper states that impact analysis and regression testing are required to preserve software quality when software changes, and distinguishes change types at different granularities: A Taxonomy of Change Types and Its Application in Software Evolution (11–13 April 2012).

Map graph paths to test scope rather than treating every reachable node as equally risky:

  • Run focused unit tests for changed functions and direct callers.
  • Run contract or integration tests for changed APIs, messages, schemas and shared files.
  • Run transaction, batch and data-reconciliation tests when a database or business workflow boundary is crossed.
  • Run broader smoke or end-to-end suites when the graph shows multiple production boundaries, weakly understood runtime dispatch or high-centrality shared components.
  • Record which graph paths selected each test group, so a future reviewer can challenge or improve the selection rule.

A passing test suite does not prove graph completeness, and a graph path does not prove a runtime failure. Keep the two evidence streams linked but separate.

Make human review part of the design

Automation is strongest at structural relationships and weakest where business meaning is implicit. IBM’s described workflow includes an SME or system architect and interactive refinement of logical boundaries. Require review when:

  • a relationship is inferred from naming similarity, comments or incomplete parsing;
  • reflection, dynamic SQL, runtime configuration or generated code hides the target;
  • a change crosses a transaction, regulatory, data-ownership or service boundary;
  • the graph proposes merging entities from different languages or releases;
  • code and schema evidence conflict; or
  • the proposed delta would remove a high-impact edge.

Give reviewers a focused diff: old and new evidence, affected entities, dependency paths, confidence, unresolved conflicts and suggested tests. Capture the decision, reviewer role and date as graph provenance.

Set a freshness policy that matches operational risk

Because no cited source defines a universal cadence, choose one from your own release and maintenance profile. A high-risk payment or safety workflow may require graph updates in the same change pipeline before deployment. A low-change batch estate may update on each release and reconcile on a slower schedule. State the trigger, maximum tolerated lag, owner and escalation path.

Useful triggers include a pull request touching a tracked boundary, a schema or interface change, a parser or ontology upgrade, a production incident, or a scheduled reconciliation. Measure actual lag from accepted commit to validated graph publication, and report exceptions rather than hiding them.

Common failure modes and recovery

The graph shows changed files but misses affected consumers

Expand analysis beyond file links to calls, shared data, configuration, messages and generated artifacts. Re-run traversal in both directions and inspect runtime-dispatch mechanisms.

Renames create duplicate components

Use symbol-identity heuristics based on syntax, location and history, then require review for ambiguous matches. Preserve a “renamed from” relationship so historical queries remain valid.

Schema drift is invisible

A worked example: changing a legacy transaction

Suppose a commit changes a COBOL transaction’s customer-status lookup and modifies the corresponding table definition. The update should proceed as follows:

  1. Capture the commit, changed procedure, SQL block, copybook and schema migration.
  2. Re-extract the procedure’s table reads, called routines, generated data definitions and batch or API entry points.
  3. Map the procedure to the transaction and the table to its schema version; mark the old column relationship as historical if it was renamed.
  4. Traverse callers, jobs, reports and services that consume the status value, including configuration-driven routes.
  5. Flag any type or nullability conflict between code and schema for an SME or database owner.
  6. Select unit, transaction, data-reconciliation and contract tests from the impacted paths.
  7. Publish a graph revision tied to the commit, migration and test results, retaining the prior revision for release comparison.

This produces a defensible answer to “what could this change break?” without claiming that every runtime dependency was discovered automatically.

Implementation blueprint for a maintainable pipeline

A practical implementation can be organized into these pipeline stages:

  1. Ingest: fetch source, schemas, configuration, generated artifacts and the target commit.
  2. Parse and normalize: produce language-aware symbols and evidence locations using versioned tooling.
  3. Diff: classify additions, removals, edits, moves and renames at block and entity levels.
  4. Extract: recompute dependencies for changed regions and their boundary context.
  5. Map: connect code facts to architecture entities, with dependency strength and confidence.
  6. Propose: create a graph delta while preserving historical revisions.
  7. Check: run endpoint, duplicate, schema, conflict and provenance validations.
  8. Review: route uncertain or high-impact changes to designated experts.
  9. Test: execute regression suites selected from validated impact paths.
  10. Publish and monitor: store the revision, measure freshness and unresolved conflicts, and trigger reconciliation when thresholds are exceeded.

The key design choice is to make uncertainty visible. A graph that distinguishes verified, inferred, conflicting and obsolete facts is more useful for maintenance than one that presents every extraction as equally authoritative.

What the published evidence does—and does not—show

Source and scope Reported evidence What you should not infer
IBM Research, 2022; two client applications Customizable ontology, mixed-artifact modeling and an interactive analyst workflow for exploring modernization impact That graph updates are fully automatic or validated across all languages and estates
Wang et al., 2022; 10 open-source projects Incremental architecture recovery driven by code changes, with reported effectiveness and efficiency gains over compared methods That the same gains apply to a particular COBOL, PL/1, assembler or mixed-language installation
IEEE framework abstract, 2026; three software-engineering corpora Reported relation-extraction F1 and training-cost improvements, plus quality assurance, semantic deduplication and revision control components That the percentages measure graph freshness or guarantee production accuracy
IEEE change-taxonomy paper, 2012 Change-impact analysis and regression testing are connected practices for preserving software quality That one fixed impact algorithm or test threshold is mandated

Use these findings to design a traceable, change-driven process, then calibrate thresholds and review effort with measurements from your own system.

The Bottom Line

An accurate legacy knowledge graph is maintained as a versioned, evidence-backed change stream: re-analyze changed code and its dependency boundary, reconcile source with schemas and other artifacts, validate uncertain facts with experts, scope regression tests from verified impact paths, and preserve every revision’s provenance. Define freshness and quality thresholds locally because no universal standard is established for this setting.
