There is no single OTA-blocking recipe that is safe for every jailbroken Kindle. The correct procedure depends on the reader’s exact model or generation, firmware version, and jailbreak route. Keep the Kindle offline while you identify those details, then follow the current KindleModding instructions for that combination. Its FAQ points to the renametobin option for disabling or restoring automatic updates and to a “Check OTA Status” scriptlet for verification.
Do not treat the old update.bin.tmp.partial folder trick as a universal fix. MobileRead documents that method for legacy 5.x firmware, while newer jailbreaks use different post-jailbreak procedures. Before an intentional update, factory reset, or downgrade, restore normal automatic-update behavior first; afterward, reinstall the hotfix and any extensions that no longer work.
What automatic updating means on a jailbroken Kindle
“OTA” means over the air: software delivered through the Kindle’s network connection rather than copied manually over USB. Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page lists downloadable firmware by device model, and the historical Kindle User’s Guide, 2nd Edition describes automatic software upgrades as something Amazon may deliver.
Recommended Free Tools
A jailbreak changes the software environment on which add-ins, launchers, patches, and utilities depend. An Amazon firmware update can therefore remove a modification, alter the files or permissions it expects, or leave an extension unable to start. That does not mean every update will destroy every jailbreak: the old MobileRead 5.x documentation reports that some jailbreaks survived particular updates while add-ins still required reinstallation. Those historical observations are not a guarantee for current firmware or for your model.

Disabling OTA updates is consequently a compatibility precaution, not a permanent security setting. You are choosing to postpone Amazon’s normal firmware delivery, so you must deliberately re-enable it when you want to update or perform maintenance that requires a clean update path.
Identify the Kindle before changing OTA behavior
Write down the following three items before copying any files or running a scriptlet:
- Exact model or generation: use the model information shown in the Kindle’s device settings or on its registration/device page. Similar-looking readers can use different firmware packages.
- Full firmware version: record every digit displayed under the device software information. Amazon publishes versions and downloads by model, not as one universal “latest Kindle firmware.”
- Jailbreak method and firmware family: note which jailbreak route you used and whether its instructions identify a particular firmware range. Post-jailbreak steps can differ substantially between routes.
If the reader is about to download an update, enable Airplane Mode or otherwise disconnect it while you identify the correct instructions. This prevents a network transfer during setup; Airplane Mode by itself is not a permanent OTA blocker.

Use the current KindleModding procedure for your exact combination
The current KindleModding Kindle Jailbreak FAQ is the authoritative starting point for post-jailbreak maintenance. It describes a renametobin restore/rename mechanism and refers to a “Check OTA Status” scriptlet. The names matter: do not substitute an old extension, a file copied from an unrelated firmware guide, or a hand-edited system binary.

1. Keep the device offline while preparing
Leave Airplane Mode enabled while you verify the model, firmware, and jailbreak route. If the Kindle is already connected to Wi-Fi, disconnect it before transferring the files required by your route. This temporary isolation gives you time to read the matching instructions without an update downloading in the background.
2. Open the matching post-jailbreak instructions
Start at the FAQ and follow the link or section that matches your firmware family. Read the prerequisites and supported models before copying anything. Current packages may distinguish between a fresh jailbreak, a device that already has a hotfix, and a reader that has undergone a previous reset or firmware change.
3. Apply the documented renametobin option
Use the exact restore/rename operation described by the current guide. In this context, renametobin changes the update-related executable or name in the way the post-jailbreak package expects, preventing the normal automatic-update path. The FAQ’s naming is a pointer to the supported mechanism; it is not an invitation to rename arbitrary files in the system partition manually.
Because the files and delivery method can change with firmware, obtain the package from the current guide rather than relying on a previously downloaded copy. The guide may require copying a file to visible USB storage, safely ejecting the Kindle, and allowing the device to process it after unplugging. Follow the sequence and file placement stated for your route.
4. Confirm the result with “Check OTA Status”
Install or run the “Check OTA Status” scriptlet referred to by the FAQ. It is the appropriate way to verify whether the update mechanism is in the state you intended. A status check is more reliable than inferring success from the absence of a notification, because a Kindle can be offline, have a pending package, or have an incomplete post-jailbreak installation for unrelated reasons.

5. Keep the hotfix and extensions in mind
If the instructions for your route require a hotfix, use the current KindleModding hotfix setup guide. The guide uses a computer connection and file copy, which is why a working USB data cable may be necessary. Do not assume that a hotfix built for one firmware family is compatible with another, and do not treat an OTA block as a replacement for installing the hotfix.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe legacy update.bin.tmp.partial folder method
MobileRead’s 5.x Jailbreak page documents an older OTA-blocking technique. It tells the user to create an empty directory named exactly update.bin.tmp.partial at the top level of the Kindle’s visible USB storage. The name has no extension, and the directory must contain no files.
- Connect the Kindle to a computer with a data-capable USB cable.
- Open the Kindle storage that appears on the computer.
- Create a new folder in the storage root, not inside
documentsor another subfolder. - Name it exactly
update.bin.tmp.partial, including the periods and lowercase letters. - Leave the directory empty, eject the Kindle safely, and disconnect it.
This is legacy 5.x guidance, not a current universal recommendation. Newer firmware can handle update staging differently, and a directory that once blocked a package may be ignored or may interfere with another maintenance process. Use it only when the documentation for your specific legacy firmware explicitly confirms that it is supported. Do not combine this folder method with a different route’s renametobin instructions, and never rename system binaries by guesswork.
How to verify that the Kindle is really protected
Verification should answer two separate questions: whether the supported blocker is enabled and whether the Kindle has a package already waiting to be processed.
- Run the current “Check OTA Status” scriptlet described by KindleModding and record the result.
- Check the Kindle’s software-information screen for the exact firmware version you recorded earlier.
- Inspect visible USB storage only for the files and directories the applicable guide says should exist; do not delete unrelated system files.
- Keep Wi-Fi disabled until the status check and any required post-jailbreak installation are complete.
If the scriptlet reports that updates remain enabled, stop there and reread the matching guide. A failed status check can indicate the wrong package, an unsupported firmware version, incorrect file placement, or an incomplete jailbreak. Repeating the same file copy without resolving the mismatch can make troubleshooting harder.

Restore automatic updates before an intentional update, reset, or downgrade
When you decide to perform maintenance, reverse the OTA block first. The current FAQ specifically warns users to enable Airplane Mode and restore automatic updates with renametobin before updating, factory-resetting, or downgrading. The reason is practical: leaving the blocker enabled can prevent the normal update process or leave the reader in an unexpected state.
KindleModding gives this explicit warning: “If you reset your Kindle in a jailbroken state with renametobin left enabled, your Kindle may be in a locked state.” This is community documentation, not an Amazon guarantee, but it is a serious reason to treat restoration as a required pre-maintenance step.
Safe maintenance sequence
- Back up personal documents and note the current firmware, model, and jailbreak route.
- Enable Airplane Mode before opening the maintenance workflow.
- Use the supported
renametobinrestore operation from the current guide to return automatic updates to their normal state. - Run the OTA-status check to confirm the restoration, if the guide provides that check for your route.
- Perform the intentional update, factory reset, or downgrade using the instructions for the exact model and firmware.
- After the operation finishes, reinstall the hotfix from scratch when the guide requires it.
- Test KUAL and each extension you use; reinstall any component that no longer launches or is no longer compatible.
- Only reconnect to Wi-Fi after the device is in the state you want and your post-operation checks are complete.
Do not assume a factory reset automatically restores standard update behavior. A reset performed while renametobin remains enabled can leave the Kindle unable to update normally, which is why restoration belongs before the reset, not after it.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The Kindle keeps downloading an update
Leave Wi-Fi off, run the current OTA-status scriptlet, and compare the installed package with the model and firmware listed in the guide. If the status is enabled, you likely used the wrong route or an incomplete package. Do not add the legacy folder unless your firmware documentation specifically supports it.
The Kindle will not update after you intentionally restored updates
Confirm that the restore operation completed and that the status check reports automatic updates enabled. Look for a pending or partially copied package only where the applicable guide tells you to look. If the device was reset with the blocker still active, follow the recovery instructions for that jailbreak route rather than repeatedly attempting downloads.

KUAL or extensions stopped working after an update
This is an expected possibility after firmware changes. Reinstall the hotfix from the current guide, then reinstall extensions individually and check their compatibility with the new firmware. The old MobileRead documentation’s statement that add-ins need reinstallation applies to the versions it covers; it does not establish that every modern extension has the same behavior.
The computer does not show Kindle storage
Use a USB cable that supports data, not charging only, and try another computer port. Unlock the Kindle if its screen requests permission, then safely eject it before disconnecting. Cable troubleshooting is separate from OTA blocking: the cable only provides the file-transfer path.
You cannot identify the exact firmware or model
Do not install a blocker yet. Keep the device offline, open its device-information screen, and obtain the model and full software version. Amazon’s update catalog is organized by model, so a package selected from a different generation can be unsuitable even when the product names look similar.

Amazon’s update catalog shows different software versions for different Kindle generations. There is therefore no single number that can accurately be called the latest Kindle firmware for every reader. Check the model-specific entry at Amazon’s software-update page before deciding whether an update is appropriate.
Suppressing OTA delivery also postpones ordinary firmware fixes. Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader Device Software Security Updates page explains support periods and cautions: “Please note that the update period is not a guarantee as to how long your device will last.” That policy language does not quantify the security risk of disabling updates on a modified Kindle, so weigh your need for jailbreak compatibility against the value of receiving fixes and feature updates. Re-enable updates and follow the maintenance sequence whenever you deliberately choose the supported Amazon firmware path.
A practical decision guide
| Situation | Use | Do not do |
|---|---|---|
| Newly jailbroken device on a currently supported route | Follow the current KindleModding FAQ and the instructions for your model and firmware; use renametobin and the status scriptlet where specified. |
Do not apply an old folder trick simply because it worked on a different Kindle. |
| Legacy firmware covered by MobileRead’s 5.x page | Use the empty root-level update.bin.tmp.partial directory only if that page and your jailbreak documentation confirm compatibility. |
Do not assume the method works on newer firmware. |
| Preparing an intentional update, reset, or downgrade | Restore automatic updates first, verify the state, then perform the operation and reinstall the hotfix or extensions as needed. | Do not reset while renametobin remains enabled. |
| Unsure of model, version, or jailbreak route | Keep the Kindle offline and identify all three details before changing files. | Do not install a package selected from a generic “latest Kindle” claim. |
What this approach can and cannot guarantee
A correctly applied blocker can prevent the normal OTA path for the firmware and jailbreak combination it supports. It cannot guarantee that a jailbreak will survive every future update, that an extension will remain compatible, or that a device will recover automatically from a reset performed with the blocker active. Those outcomes depend on the model, firmware, jailbreak route, and the current post-jailbreak packages.
The safest operating pattern is therefore deliberate rather than permanent: identify the device precisely, apply the current supported blocker, verify its state, keep backups, and restore automatic updates before any maintenance operation that needs them.
