For a planned break, switch to a prepared “Be Right Back” (BRB) scene or use your platform’s pause-broadcast control. Don’t rely on a dropped connection to create an intermission: Twitch’s Disconnect Protection is for reconnecting after an interruption, not for a deliberate break. On PS5, use the documented Pause Broadcast option; on a PC encoder, prepare and test a BRB scene before going live.
Choose a planned-break method, not a recovery feature
Decide what viewers should see and hear while you are away. A deliberate pause or BRB scene gives you control over the intermission; a connection-loss feature is intended to help with an accidental outage. Before leaving, make sure the game, desktop, microphone, and any other audio sources are not revealing something you do not want broadcast.

Pause a PS5 broadcast
- While broadcasting, open the PS5 Broadcast card.
- Select Pause Broadcast before stepping away.
- Return to the broadcast and resume when you are ready. PlayStation describes this option as holding the camera feed and muting all audio until you get back.
Do not assume that leaving the game creates a polished intermission. PlayStation notes that navigating away from a game or activating see-through view can show viewers a blank screen with a message. The pause option is the documented choice for telling viewers to hold on while you step away.

Set up a BRB scene in a PC encoder
Create and test the scene before you go live. Twitch Creator Camp includes a Stream Scenes & Overlays chapter in its Better Broadcasts learning path, reflecting scenes as a normal broadcast workflow.

- In your streaming software, add a scene named something recognizable, such as BRB.
- Choose a simple visual that makes it clear you are away. Check that the scene does not expose your desktop, private messages, or other unintended content.
- Review every audio source. Mute the microphone if you do not want private conversation transmitted, and check whether game audio, alerts, or other sources remain active.
- Start a test broadcast or use the software’s available preview and recording features. Switch from gameplay to BRB and back, checking both the picture and the audio each time.
- Before leaving during the real stream, switch to BRB and confirm that the intended scene is live.
The exact buttons for adding scenes and changing sources differ by encoder and version, so use the controls shown in your installed software. Test the actual transition rather than assuming a scene switch will mute a source.
What Twitch Disconnect Protection does—and does not do
Twitch says Disconnect Protection shows viewers a reconnect slate for up to 90 seconds while you troubleshoot and reconnect. If you do not reconnect within that window, the stream ends. Twitch lists OBS Studio, Streamlabs OBS, XSplit, and Twitch Studio as supported encoders, as well as Twitch mobile broadcasts, and recommends testing encoder support.

That 90-second window is a maximum reconnect-slate period described by Twitch, not a recommended break length or a substitute for a BRB scene. Use it when the connection fails unexpectedly; for a planned absence, switch to your tested scene or use the platform’s pause control.

What YouTube Live settings mean during a break
YouTube’s DVR setting lets viewers pause, rewind, and continue playback during a live stream. It changes viewer playback; it is not documented as a way for the broadcaster to show a BRB slate. YouTube also documents auto-start and auto-stop controls for encoder streams, which are separate from an intermission screen.

For stream reliability, YouTube recommends choosing a quality that fits the available internet connection, testing with representative audio and video movement before the event, and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. Its encoder guidance lists CBR as the bitrate encoding mode and recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Check YouTube’s current live settings and encoder guidance when configuring a stream, since platform recommendations can change.
Test before the stream and check the result
- Test with representative gameplay motion and the audio sources you will use live.
- Switch into and out of the intermission setup; confirm that the intended image appears and no unwanted microphone or desktop audio remains.
- Choose an output quality that your connection can sustain and monitor stream health during the event.
- Tell viewers briefly that you are stepping away and will return, so a quiet intermission is not mistaken for an abandoned stream.
Common problems and fixes
Viewers see a blank screen after you leave the game
Leaving the game on PS5 can produce a blank screen with a message. Use the PS5 Pause Broadcast control for a deliberate pause, or prepare a BRB scene if your setup supports one.

The stream keeps transmitting your microphone during the break
Check the audio behavior of the chosen pause control or scene. For an encoder scene, inspect the microphone and every other audio source, then test the transition before going live.
The reconnect slate appears, but you meant to take a planned break
Disconnect Protection is responding to a connection interruption. Switch to a deliberate BRB scene or use the relevant pause control instead of treating reconnect recovery as an intermission feature.

YouTube viewers can rewind, but they still do not see a BRB screen
DVR controls what viewers can do with live playback. It does not create a host-side intermission slate; use a tested scene or a suitable native pause feature in your setup.
The encoder loses connection or stream health degrades
Use the platform’s connection-recovery behavior for an accidental outage, then check the connection and encoder output. For YouTube, test with representative motion and audio, choose a quality suited to the connection, and monitor stream health while live.
