The most reliable way to keep a gaming laptop cool is to give its intake and exhaust vents unobstructed air, use the manufacturer’s supported performance controls, reduce game workload when necessary, and clean or service the machine safely. Play on a hard, level surface rather than fabric, leave space around every vent, close unnecessary background programs, and treat a stand or cooling pad as an optional airflow aid—not a guaranteed temperature fix.
Why gaming laptops get hot
Games can load both the processor (CPU) and graphics processor (GPU) for long periods. As those components use more power, they produce more heat. The cooling system transfers that heat into a heat sink and uses fans to move warm air out of the chassis. ASUS explains that fan speed normally rises during resource-intensive work such as gaming, so louder fans during a demanding game are not, by themselves, evidence of a defect.
Heat becomes a practical problem when the laptop cannot shed it efficiently. Restricted vents, a soft surface, dust, an unusually warm room, unnecessary background work, or a fan that is not operating correctly can all make the system run hotter than it normally does. Symptoms such as repeated shutdowns, intermittent restarts, performance degradation, or grinding fan sounds deserve troubleshooting rather than being dismissed as normal gaming noise.

Use a hard, level surface
Put the laptop on a desk, table, or another firm, flat surface. Beds, pillows, sofas, clothing, blankets, and carpet can cover intake openings or trap the warm exhaust air near the chassis. Even when a fabric surface does not completely block a vent, it can reduce the clearance the fan needs to draw air.
Place the computer so its exhaust is not pressed against a wall, monitor stand, book, or other object. Check the underside, rear edge, and sides for grilles; vent locations differ by model. The owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s support page is the authority for your particular layout.
Keep every vent clear
Do not rest a phone, controller, notebook, or other object over a grille. Leave surrounding space around both intake and exhaust openings. ASUS’s overheating guidance specifically warns not to block ventilation holes and to maintain distance around all vents to avoid poor heat dissipation and overheating.

If the laptop sits close to a wall, rotate it or move it forward far enough for hot air to escape. A clear exhaust path matters even when the intake on the bottom has plenty of room.

Check the room and operating range
Ambient temperature affects the cooling system’s starting point: warmer room air leaves less headroom for the heat sink to reject heat. ASUS lists an ambient operating range of 5°C to 35°C (41°F to 95°F) in its overheating troubleshooting guidance and directs users to the device’s safety instructions and manual. That range is ASUS-specific, not a universal limit for every gaming laptop.
Keep the laptop away from direct sunlight, heaters, and other heat sources. Do not place it inside a closed cabinet while gaming. If the room is unusually warm, improving room ventilation or moving to a cooler location may help more than changing a software setting.
Reduce unnecessary heat without sacrificing more performance than necessary
Close background applications
Before launching a demanding game, close programs that are not needed for play. Web browsers with many tabs, video processing, file synchronization, downloads, virtual machines, and overlays can consume CPU, GPU, memory, or storage resources. Unnecessary work increases heat without improving the game.
Use your operating system’s task manager or activity monitor to identify unusually busy processes. Do not end a process blindly: leave essential system and security services running, and close only applications you recognize and do not need.

Lower resolution or graphics settings when temperatures stay higher than usual
HP’s troubleshooting guidance suggests lowering game resolution and graphics settings when a computer becomes warmer than usual. Start with settings that reduce sustained GPU workload, such as resolution, ray-tracing features, shadow quality, volumetric effects, or other options that your game identifies as GPU-intensive. Change one group of settings at a time so you can tell which adjustment helped.
Lowering settings is a response to abnormal heat or unwanted fan behavior, not a requirement for every session. If temperatures and performance are normal for the model, you may prefer to keep the game’s visual settings unchanged.
Use only controls supported for your model
Many gaming laptops provide manufacturer-specific performance modes, fan profiles, or thermal controls. Their names, locations, and available ranges are model-dependent. Use the control panel, BIOS/UEFI option, or utility documented for your laptop. Avoid forcing an unsupported fan curve, firmware setting, voltage change, or third-party control that could conflict with the manufacturer’s design or warranty conditions.

If a supported quiet, balanced, or performance mode is available, choose it based on the game and the noise or temperature you can accept. A performance mode may allow higher sustained power and therefore more fan noise; a quieter mode may reduce heat by limiting power. The correct choice depends on the model and the game.

Should you buy a stand or cooling pad?
A stand or cooling pad can elevate the laptop and prevent its underside from sitting directly against a desk or other surface. That extra clearance may improve the air path in a particular setup. The manufacturer guidance reviewed here does not establish a guaranteed temperature reduction, frame-rate increase, or universal benefit for every cooling pad or laptop design.
| Feature | Adjustable laptop stand | Cooling pad |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Raises the chassis and can improve clearance without adding fans. | Raises the chassis and adds powered airflow beneath it. |
| What to check | Stable support, correct size, unobstructed intake, and a viewing angle you can use safely. | Fan placement relative to the laptop’s intake, stable support, power connection, noise, and correct size. |
| Portability | Often simpler to carry and set up. | Usually heavier or dependent on a USB power connection, depending on the design. |
| Possible drawback | A poorly fitted stand can cover vents or let the laptop slide. | Fans add noise and may not align with the laptop’s intake; no cited source guarantees a particular cooling result. |
| Best reason to choose it | You need reliable elevation and a firm, unobstructed base. | You want elevation plus optional powered airflow and accept added noise, cables, and bulk. |
Whichever accessory you choose, verify that the laptop sits securely and that the stand or pad does not cover an intake. A pad with several small fans is not automatically better than a stable stand if its airflow misses the laptop’s vents. There is no published cooling-pad temperature-drop figure established by the manufacturer material cited for this guide, so avoid products or claims promising a specific number of degrees.
Safe cleaning for vents and fans
Dust can restrict airflow, but cleaning instructions differ by model. Shut down the laptop completely and unplug the charger before cleaning. Remove connected peripherals so the machine cannot wake or receive power through an accessory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Read the model-specific instructions. Check the owner’s manual or support page for approved external-cleaning steps and any warranty restrictions.
- Inspect the grilles. Look for lint or dust at the underside, side, and rear vents. Do not push debris deeper into the chassis with a brush or object.
- Use gentle, controlled air only if the manufacturer allows it. ASUS and MSI advise keeping canned compressed air at a distance; ASUS also says not to invert the can and warns against strong-air compressors. Follow the can’s safety directions and the laptop maker’s instructions.
- Keep the fan from being over-spun. If the manufacturer’s procedure tells you to hold a fan in place while cleaning, follow that procedure. Do not improvise with high-pressure air or an air gun.
- Reconnect power only after cleaning is complete. Check that no liquid, moisture, or loose debris is present before starting the laptop.
Do not imply that an external blast has cleaned dust from internal heat sinks. If dust is packed inside, the fan is obstructed, or the manufacturer’s procedure requires opening the chassis, contact the maker or an authorized service provider unless you are specifically qualified and the warranty permits user access.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
Follow these steps in order when the laptop is hotter or louder than usual. Stop at the first step that resolves the problem and observe the next gaming session under similar conditions.
- Move the laptop. Place it on a hard, level surface with clearance around every intake and exhaust vent. Remove fabric, papers, and objects from underneath and beside it.
- Check the environment. Move away from sunlight or a heat source and compare the room with the operating range stated in the model’s manual. ASUS’s cited guidance lists 5°C to 35°C, but your model may specify something different.
- Confirm fan operation. Listen for normal airflow and check the manufacturer’s utility, if supplied, for a supported fan or thermal mode. A grinding, scraping, or intermittent fan sound is not normal fan ramping.
- Close unnecessary programs. Exit applications and background tasks that are consuming processor, graphics, memory, or storage resources without being needed for the game.
- Reduce the game’s workload. Lower resolution or graphics settings if the system remains warmer than usual, and test again with the same game scene or session length.
- Apply documented controls only. Use the manufacturer’s supported performance, thermal, or fan settings. Do not install an unverified control utility or force settings intended for another model.
- Consider elevation. Try a stable stand or cooling pad if the laptop’s current position leaves little clearance. Confirm that the accessory does not obstruct an intake and do not assume it will deliver a specific temperature change.
- Clean conservatively. Shut down and unplug before following the maker’s external-cleaning instructions. Do not use a strong-air compressor.
- Run the maker’s diagnostics. If the manufacturer provides hardware or fan diagnostics, run them after the basic airflow checks. Record any error code exactly.
- Arrange service when necessary. Contact manufacturer support or an authorized service provider if the problem persists, diagnostics report a hardware fault, the fan grinds, the laptop shuts down or restarts, or performance repeatedly degrades.
Recognize normal fan behavior versus a fault
Usually normal
- Fans become louder when a demanding game loads a busy scene or both CPU and GPU usage rises.
- Fan speed changes as the workload changes.
- The chassis feels warm during a long session while the game remains stable and the laptop behaves as documented for its model.
Needs investigation
- Fan noise remains unusually loud after closing the game and unnecessary background programs.
- A fan produces grinding, scraping, rattling, or intermittent noises.
- The laptop repeatedly shuts down or restarts during play.
- Performance degrades or becomes unstable compared with the same game and settings.
- Manufacturer diagnostics report a fan, thermal, or other hardware fault.
Do not diagnose a hardware failure from sound alone, and do not treat a shutdown as something to solve by simply raising fan speed. Check airflow and supported settings first, then use diagnostics and service guidance.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek service
Service is the appropriate next step when basic airflow, workload, and documented cleaning measures do not resolve the problem. MSI identifies intermittent restarts, shutdowns, and performance degradation as overheating-related troubleshooting symptoms and recommends checking supported software, fan modes, background applications, ventilation, and diagnostics. If those checks do not solve the issue, it directs users to customer service. ASUS likewise recommends diagnostics and service when hardware abnormalities are detected and customer assistance when dust-related overheating persists.
Contact the manufacturer or an authorized provider rather than opening the machine when you are unsure of the procedure, the laptop is under warranty, internal dust is severe, a fan is physically damaged, or a diagnostic code indicates hardware trouble. Keep the model number, operating system version, game, settings, session length, symptoms, and any diagnostic code ready for support. That information helps distinguish a normal high-load fan response from a repeatable thermal or hardware fault.
A repeatable setup for long sessions
Before each extended session, use this short checklist:
- Set the laptop on a hard, level surface.
- Check that underside, side, and rear vents have clear space.
- Move the exhaust away from walls and objects that trap hot air.
- Close unneeded applications, downloads, and synchronization tasks.
- Select the manufacturer-supported thermal or performance mode appropriate for the game.
- Keep a stand or cooling pad stable and clear of the intake if you use one.
- Watch for new grinding noises, shutdowns, restarts, or unusual performance loss.
After the session, let the laptop finish its normal cooling cycle on the same unobstructed surface before storing it. Do not put a hot machine into a soft case or closed compartment immediately, where residual heat and blocked vents can remain trapped.
