A useful game journal can be as small as four fields: the game and date, where you stopped, what mattered in the story, and one sentence about your next thought or action. Write it immediately after a session in a notebook, notes app, or tracking app. The goal is not to produce a review or a complete transcript; it is to leave your future self a reliable resume point and a record of the choices you personally want to remember.
Perthro’s guide puts the habit in practical terms: “One sentence after you put the controller down is enough.” Start with that minimum, then add detail only when a game’s plot, clues, relationships, or branching decisions justify it.
What a game journal is for
Long role-playing games, narrative adventures, visual novels, and choice-driven games often become difficult to resume after a break. A save file may tell you the chapter or location, but not why you went there, which lead you were following, or whether a character’s behavior changed because of a decision you made three hours earlier.
A journal fills in that personal context. It can help you:

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Resume a game without replaying old scenes or searching for a walkthrough.
- Remember names, clues, factions, relationships, objectives, and unresolved questions.
- Separate what the game has revealed from what you merely suspect.
- Preserve your reasoning before a branch or major decision fades from memory.
- Record why you paused or abandoned a game, so you can decide later whether returning is worthwhile.
There is no established statistic showing how much game journaling improves memory. Treat it as a practical external record and a reflection habit, not a scientifically quantified memory intervention.
The smallest useful entry
Use the following structure after every substantial session. It is intentionally short enough to complete when you are tired.
| Field | What to write | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Game and date | The exact game title and the date of the session. | Harbor of Ash — October 16, 2026 |
| Status and resume point | Playing, finished, shelved, or planning to play; include the chapter, quest, location, or objective in your own words. | Playing; reached the flooded archive, before speaking to the archivist. |
| Story detail | The character, clue, reveal, relationship, setting, or goal that mattered most. | The missing cartographer may have left the blue seals on purpose. |
| Choice | What you chose and why. Keep the decision separate from its outcome. | Shared the map because the guard seemed honest; consequence not known yet. |
| One personal detail | Something you want to remember, investigate, try, or feel again. | Next time, inspect the locked bell tower before leaving. |
The game, date, and status create a chronological record. The remaining lines preserve meaning rather than mere progress. If you have only a few seconds, write the first two fields and one concrete sentence.
What to record about the story
A journal does not need to summarize every cutscene. Choose details that will answer a future question such as “Who was that character?” or “Why did I trust this faction?” The Common Sense Education “Game Journal” worksheet suggests reflecting on story, setting and mood, controls and activities, and references and comparisons. Its instruction is simple: “Use this journal to take notes about a game you’re playing.”
Plot, characters, and clues
Record a reveal, a suspicious detail, or a relationship that changed. Write names exactly as the game spells them when possible. If you are unsure whether a clue is important, label it as a question rather than presenting your theory as fact.
- Observed: “Mira gave the key after I refused the payment.”
- Inference: “She may be testing whether I am loyal to the guild.”
- Unresolved: “The game has not explained the symbol on the key.”
Setting and mood
A short sensory or emotional note can restore the feel of a place more effectively than a list of objectives. Mention the storm outside the settlement, the uneasy music in a corridor, or the contrast between a cheerful market and an ominous conversation. These notes are especially useful when you return months later and remember the atmosphere but not the location.
Activities and systems
Note unusual activities, controls, or systems that affect how you play: a stealth rule you finally understood, a crafting recipe you want to test, or a minigame that interrupted the story. Do not turn the journal into a complete manual. Capture only information you are likely to need again.

References and comparisons
If a game reminds you of another story, historical event, book, or earlier entry in a series, record the connection and why it occurred to you. This is a personal index, not a claim that the developers intended the reference.

How to track choices without confusing guesses with consequences
Branching games create a specific journaling problem: the immediate result of a decision may be visible, while the important consequence appears much later. Use four separate lines whenever a choice matters.
- Situation: What decision did the game present?
- Action: Which option did you select?
- Reason: What information, value, or emotion guided you?
- Result: What consequence have you actually observed?
Mark the result as unknown when the game has not shown one. For example:
Choice: Warned the village about the approaching convoy.
Reason: The villagers helped me earlier.
Observed result: The mayor closed the gates and refused the convoy.
Unknown: Whether the convoy will return with reinforcements.
This format prevents hindsight from rewriting your original reasoning. If a later chapter changes your interpretation, append a dated note instead of deleting the earlier entry. Your journal then preserves both the decision you made and what you learned afterward.
A session-by-session workflow
The following routine keeps the journal from becoming a second chore.
Before you start
- Open the same notebook page, note, or journal record you used last time.
- Read only the previous entry’s resume point and unresolved questions.
- Write a one-line intention if useful: “Find the missing engineer” or “Test whether the eastern gate is open.”
Reading the last entry gives you context without forcing you to reread your entire history.
During play
Do not interrupt every scene to write. Use a quick mark, a screenshot for later transcription, or a short note only when a name, clue, or decision is likely to be forgotten. If spoilers are a concern, keep speculation in a separate line from confirmed information.
When you stop
- Record the game and date.
- Set the status: playing, finished, shelved, or planning to play.
- Describe the exact resume point in your own words.
- Add one story, choice, or personal detail.
- Write the next action if you already know it.
Perthro’s August 13, 2026 guide recommends writing soon after stopping and offers prompts such as “What do I want to remember about it six months from now?” and “What made me stop tonight?” These are useful prompts, not validated tests; use whichever one produces a concrete note.

Use a resume sentence that combines location, objective, and immediate context. “At the castle” is too broad. “At the north castle balcony, after finding the cracked sigil, before deciding whether to meet the rebel captain” gives you three retrieval cues.

For sprawling games, add a compact progress block:
- Current area: The map region, hub, dungeon, or chapter.
- Active objective: The quest or goal you intend to pursue first.
- Open threads: Up to three unresolved clues, errands, or character questions.
- Inventory or build reminder: Only if a particular item, skill, or loadout affects your next plan.
Keep open threads limited. A list of every side quest becomes a second backlog and makes the next session harder to choose.
How to make the habit sustainable
Use a tired-day version
Decide in advance that a single concrete sentence counts. “Stopped after the lighthouse boss; I still do not trust Nera” is more useful than a generic “Good session.” You can expand it later if the detail still matters.
Record pauses and abandoned games
Set the status to shelved or abandoned and write why: difficult combat, lost interest in the story, competing commitments, or a technical problem. When you reconsider the game, that note tells you whether to resume, restart, or leave it finished in your personal history.
Use lists only for retrieval
A short list such as “games to revisit” or “unfinished stories” can answer a real question. Avoid creating elaborate categories that you will not maintain. The journal’s primary unit is the dated entry.
Re-read without overwriting
Revisit entries occasionally, especially before returning to a paused game. If your opinion changed, append a new dated reaction. Keeping the earlier response shows how your interpretation developed and prevents the record from becoming an artificially consistent review.
Paper, a notes app, or a tracking app?
All three formats can work. Choose the one you can reach immediately after playing and search later without friction.
| Format | Best when | Strengths | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper notebook | You like handwriting, sketches, maps, or a private offline record. | Fast, distraction-free, flexible; supports arrows, diagrams, and marginal notes. | Searching by game is manual; pages can be lost or damaged; backup requires your own method. |
| Notes app | You already use a phone, tablet, or computer during play. | Quick typing, search, copy and paste, timestamps, and possible device sync. | Sync, backup, export, and privacy depend on the app and account settings. |
| Dedicated tracker | You want statuses, reminders, structured fields, or a game library. | May offer sorting, session logs, objectives, completion records, and export. | Features, platforms, pricing, account requirements, and retention policies vary; setup can become more work than journaling. |
Portability and privacy deserve equal attention. A phone may be convenient during play but can pull you into notifications. A paper notebook is private by default but has no automatic copy. A digital service may support search or export while still requiring you to configure backups. Do not assume any service will preserve your data indefinitely.

Savepoint Journal
The Apple App Store listing for Savepoint Journal identifies iPhone and iPad support. It lists objectives, session logs, notes, reminders, clues, goals, milestones, completion reviews, search, manual backup, and optional iCloud sync. The extracted listing shows version 1.1 dated August 2, with no year displayed. These features suit players who want structured records and reminders rather than one free-form note.
Manual Save
Manual Save describes playing, up-next, and completed states, short notes, privacy by default, export, and a free core journal. Its product page labels the service Beta, so treat the feature set and availability as subject to change. This approach fits someone who wants a quiet personal log with minimal metadata.
Perthro
Perthro says its iPhone app can connect to Steam, PlayStation Network, or Xbox Live for detected sessions that you confirm before logging. It also offers CSV or JSON export. Automatic session detection can reduce forgotten entries, but confirmation and an occasional written reflection are still needed if you want to preserve why a choice mattered.
None of these examples is required. A plain note titled with the game and date can provide the same essential record.

Use a predictable title
For digital notes, use a title such as Game title — 2026-10-16 — Session 07. For paper, reserve a page or tab for each game when practical. Consistency makes search and browsing easier than elaborate tagging.
Keep a one-page game index
An index can contain the game title, first-entry date, latest status, and page or note location. Add a separate “to revisit” list only if you actually consult it.
Export and back up intentionally
If your app supports export, test it once and confirm that the resulting file contains readable text. Keep a copy in a location you control. For a notes app, check whether sync is enabled, which devices are included, and how deleted notes are recovered. For paper, photograph or scan pages you would regret losing, while remembering that images may contain spoilers or private reflections.

Use spoiler labels, collapsible sections, or separate files if you share notes with friends. A journal can include personal reactions that you do not want posted publicly. Privacy defaults are helpful, but verify sharing, account, and export settings yourself.

Troubleshooting common journaling problems
“I forget to write until the next day.”
Put the journal where you put the controller, pin the note, or set a reminder for the usual end of your session. If the reminder becomes noise, replace it with a fixed rule: no device goes away until one sentence is written.
“My entries are too vague to help.”
Add one proper noun and one action. “The desert was cool” becomes “After refusing Sela’s bargain, I entered the western desert and found the red observatory.” Concrete anchors are easier to use when you return.

“I restarted after a long break.”
