To jump-start a car with a portable battery pack, follow the vehicle owner’s manual and the pack manufacturer’s instructions before using any generic sequence. In the general procedure described by AAA, secure the vehicle, connect the positive clamp first, connect the negative clamp to an approved unpainted-metal ground, enable the pack as directed, and try the ignition. If the engine starts, remove the negative clamp first and the positive clamp second. Have the battery tested afterward.
Stop if the battery is frozen, damaged, leaking, smoking, sparking excessively, or if you cannot identify the correct terminals or ground point. A wrong connection can create shock, short-circuit, fire, or explosion hazards. The exact connection points and voltage limits are vehicle-specific.
What you need before starting
A portable jump starter is a rechargeable battery pack with cables and clamps intended to provide a temporary starting boost. AAA’s August 13, 2024 guidance discusses portable lithium jump packs, but the operating sequence, activation method, and safety features vary by manufacturer. Keep both sets of instructions available: the vehicle manual controls the approved connection points, while the pack manual controls how the unit is switched on, armed, and disconnected.

- Eye protection and gloves if available, with loose jewelry removed.
- A safe, well-ventilated location away from traffic, fuel, flames, cigarettes, and other ignition sources.
Do not rely on a visual guess about voltage or terminal location. A battery may be under a cover, in the trunk, or elsewhere in the vehicle, and a manufacturer may provide remote jump posts in the engine compartment. Use the marked jump points specified for that vehicle rather than assuming the most visible metal post is correct.

Safety checks before connecting the pack
Confirm the vehicle and pack are compatible
Identify the vehicle’s system voltage and the pack’s stated compatibility before attaching anything. The 2025 Chrysler Pacifica owner’s manual, for example, cautions against using a booster source above 12 volts for that model. That is a Pacifica-specific instruction, not a universal rule for every car. Your own manual takes priority.
Check the pack’s stated vehicle or engine compatibility, cable and clamp reach, and any restrictions for diesel, high-capacity, hybrid, or other specialized systems. The available guidance does not establish a universal cranking-current threshold or a single capacity number that works for every vehicle, so do not choose a pack from an internet rule of thumb alone.
Make sure the battery is not frozen
Do not attempt to jump-start a frozen battery. The 2025 Chrysler Pacifica manual warns that a frozen battery can rupture or explode when a boost is applied. If the battery may have frozen, stop and arrange qualified service instead of trying to thaw it with a jump pack.
Remove electrical and ignition loads
Place the transmission in Park, or in Neutral for a manual transmission, and apply the parking brake. Switch off the ignition, headlights, climate controls, audio system, chargers, and other accessories. Close or secure doors if the vehicle’s interior lights would otherwise remain on. Keep the pack and cables away from moving belts, fans, and hot engine parts.
Inspect for obvious damage
Do not proceed if the battery case is cracked, swollen, leaking, badly corroded, or visibly damaged, or if the pack’s cables, clamps, or housing are damaged. Keep metal tools, rings, watches, and necklaces from bridging the battery terminals. AAA describes battery shock and explosion hazards; avoiding an accidental conductive connection is part of the basic precaution.

How to connect and use the portable battery pack
The following is the general sequence described by AAA. If the vehicle manual or pack instructions specify a different approved ground point, activation step, or order, use those instructions instead.
1. Position and secure the vehicle
Park on a stable surface, away from traffic where possible. Select Park or Neutral, set the parking brake, turn the ignition off, and switch off accessories. If another person is present, keep them clear of the engine bay while the clamps are being attached and removed.
2. Locate the approved jump points
Read the manual before opening the pack’s clamps. Find the marked positive jump terminal and the negative connection point specified for your vehicle. Some vehicles use a remote positive post and a separate chassis or engine ground even when the battery itself is elsewhere. Do not substitute an unapproved terminal simply because it is easier to reach.
3. Attach the positive clamp first
Connect the pack’s positive clamp to the vehicle’s designated positive jump point. The positive terminal is normally marked with a plus sign or “POS,” but rely on the vehicle markings and manual. Keep the clamp stable and ensure its jaws do not touch nearby metal or the negative clamp.
4. Attach the negative clamp to the specified ground
Connect the negative clamp only where the instructions allow. AAA’s general pack procedure uses an unpainted metal part of the engine as the ground. A vehicle manual may identify a particular grounding stud or chassis point instead. Do not attach to a painted surface, a fuel line, a moving component, or an arbitrary electronic connector. Keep both clamps from touching each other.

5. Turn on or enable the pack as directed
Use the pack’s power, boost, or activation control exactly as its manufacturer describes. Some units indicate when they detect a valid connection; others require a separate enable button. Do not invent a waiting period, hold the boost control continuously, or assume that every pack has the same attempt limit. Those details depend on the equipment and vehicle instructions.

6. Try the ignition
With the pack enabled, attempt to start the vehicle. Use the normal ignition or start button; do not press the accelerator unless the vehicle manual specifically says to do so. If the engine does not start, stop and follow the pack’s troubleshooting procedure rather than repeatedly cranking without guidance. A single click, no response, or a rapidly shutting-down pack can indicate a connection, compatibility, battery, or vehicle fault.
7. Disconnect after a successful start
Once the engine is running steadily, follow the pack instructions and remove the negative clamp first. Then remove the positive clamp. Keep each clamp from touching the vehicle or the other clamp while it is being removed, and place the clamps where they cannot contact moving or hot parts. Do not leave the pack connected merely because the engine has started.
8. Deal with the pack and vehicle after the start
Turn the pack off if its instructions require it, close its protective covers, and recharge or store it according to the manufacturer’s requirements. Do not assume that a short drive has fully recharged the pack or repaired the vehicle battery. AAA recommends having the vehicle battery tested after a jump because a successful start does not establish that the battery or charging system is healthy.

What to do when the car does not start
The pack shows no ready indication
Turn the pack off before touching a clamp. Recheck that the pack is sufficiently charged, the positive and negative clamps are on the intended points, and the negative connection is on the specified unpainted ground. Inspect for loose jaws, corrosion, or a clamp resting on paint. If the pack still does not indicate readiness, consult its manual; do not bypass a safety lockout by making an improvised connection.

The pack reports reverse polarity or another connection fault
Do not continue. Switch the pack off, wait as directed by its manufacturer, and remove the clamps without allowing them to touch. Re-read the vehicle diagram and verify the positive marking and approved ground. A reverse-polarity warning can mean the clamps are genuinely reversed, the terminal is not the prescribed jump point, or the connection is too poor for the pack to validate.
The engine clicks but does not crank
Stop repeated attempts and check the connection and pack compatibility. A click can occur when the vehicle battery is deeply discharged, the clamps have inadequate contact, the pack is not enabled, or the vehicle has a starter, cable, fuse, or other fault. If the manual does not provide a safe additional step, arrange roadside assistance or service.
The engine cranks but does not run
A jump pack supplies starting power; it does not diagnose fuel, ignition, immobilizer, sensor, or other engine problems. Once the pack has been removed safely, follow the vehicle’s normal fault guidance. Repeatedly using the pack will not fix a non-battery cause of a crank-without-start condition.
The pack shuts down during the attempt
Switch it off and consult the pack instructions for its protection or timeout behavior. Check the vehicle’s specified connection points and the pack’s compatibility. Do not hold a boost control indefinitely or continue if the pack, clamps, or battery becomes hot, smells unusual, smokes, or sparks.

Stop if the pack cannot start the car after the manufacturer’s stated procedure, or if you cannot confidently identify the correct terminals. A failed jump may reflect a failed battery, charging-system problem, starter fault, damaged cable, incorrect pack, or another electrical issue. Arrange qualified roadside assistance or a mobile battery service rather than escalating with improvised wiring.

Choosing a portable battery pack without guessing
There is no single “best” pack for every car, and the available evidence does not establish a universal amp rating, capacity, or success rate. Compare the concrete characteristics that can be checked against your vehicle and the pack’s own documentation.

Keep the pack where its temperature and storage conditions remain within the manufacturer’s stated limits. Periodically inspect the case, cables, clamps, and charge status according to the instructions. Do not store it with the clamps able to contact one another or loose metal objects.
Vehicles and situations that need extra caution
Battery hidden or remote jump posts
Some cars do not expose the battery’s useful terminals in the obvious engine-bay location. The manual may direct you to a remote positive post and a dedicated ground. Follow that diagram exactly; attaching to an accessible but unapproved point can damage electronics or create a poor connection.
Hybrids and electric vehicles
The supplied guidance does not establish a universal portable-pack procedure for every hybrid or electric vehicle. Their low-voltage accessory battery, high-voltage traction system, isolation controls, and manufacturer-specific jump points differ by model. Use the exact manual for the vehicle and seek qualified assistance if any step is unclear. Never attempt to access or connect to a high-voltage traction battery as if it were a conventional 12-volt battery.
Commercial, modified, or unusual vehicles
Fleet vehicles, vehicles with auxiliary batteries, aftermarket electrical equipment, and modified engine bays may have connection rules that are absent from a generic guide. Use the service or owner documentation for that configuration and verify the pack’s compatibility before connecting.
When to stop and call for help
- The battery is frozen, cracked, swollen, leaking, or otherwise damaged.
- You see smoke, sustained arcing, fire, or unusual heat from the battery, clamps, cables, or pack.
- You cannot identify the positive terminal, approved ground, or vehicle voltage.
- The pack or vehicle manual prohibits the proposed connection.
- The pack repeatedly reports a fault, will not enable, or cannot start the car using its documented procedure.
- The vehicle is in an unsafe traffic location or the engine bay cannot be accessed safely.
- You suspect a starter, charging-system, wiring, immobilizer, or other fault rather than a discharged battery.
Move away from a smoking or sparking battery and contact emergency or roadside professionals as appropriate. Do not remove a hot or actively arcing clamp unless doing so is safe and the pack instructions provide a procedure.
Why a battery test still matters after a jump
The jump only provides enough temporary energy to start the engine. It does not show whether the battery can hold a charge, whether the alternator or charging system is working, or whether an electrical drain caused the discharge. AAA recommends testing the battery after the jump. A test result can distinguish a battery that needs charging from one that is failing and can also indicate that further vehicle diagnosis is needed.
If the car starts but later requires another boost, do not treat repeated jumps as a repair. Have the battery and charging system checked by a qualified technician and follow the vehicle manufacturer’s replacement or service specifications.
