ahm Basic is contents insurance for your belongings as a renter—not insurance for the building you live in. Whether it is worth a quote depends on your possessions, the cover limits and exclusions that apply, your chosen excess, and the premium ahm offers for your address. Its official summaries identify useful cover features, but the current policy documents—not the summaries—set the terms of a purchase.
What ahm Basic covers for renters
Contents insurance is intended to protect belongings such as furniture, laptops, jewellery, bikes and artwork when they are stolen or damaged by an insured event. ahm’s renter explainer gives fire, flood and burglary as examples; these examples are not a complete definition of what is insured. Basic’s limits and accidental-damage difference
ahm’s FAQ says Basic Cover has a $1,000 per-item limit for bicycles and portable musical instruments. It also describes a general limit of $1,000 per item or collection for jewellery, watches, collectables and media, with the option to list items individually. Accidental damage is included only with ahm Comprehensive Cover, according to the FAQ. Basic does include accidental glass breakage, but the FAQ says ordinary-use damage such as scratching, chipping or denting is excluded. How to judge the quote for your situation
There is no useful generic premium to apply to every renter: ahm says the price depends on the home and the quote is individual. Assess the quote against your own inventory and the amount you could afford to replace, not just the headline premium. ahm’s home and contents insurance FAQs

ahm’s renter explainer lists selectable excesses from $250 to $1,000. A higher excess reduces regular payments but means you contribute more toward a claim. Compare the premium and the excess together, and choose an excess you could actually pay if you needed to claim. ahm’s renters guide
- Inventory and sum insured: Estimate the replacement cost of the possessions you want protected, including everyday items, furniture and electronics.
- High-value belongings: Check whether each valuable item falls within a per-item or collection limit and whether it can be individually listed.
- Risks and exclusions: Compare the events you want covered with the policy definitions and exclusions; examples on a product page are not a substitute for those terms.
- Claim affordability: Consider the excess alongside the premium, not separately.
- Cover away from home and claim conditions: Check whether portable items are covered in the situations you need and what requirements apply to a claim. The available FAQ summary does not establish all these details.
Which policy documents to check
ahm’s document index says the PDS/FSG applies to new policies quoted on or after 2 December 2025 and renewals on or after 1 January 2026; it also lists an update dated 27 March 2026 that applies to new and existing policies. Confirm that the documents displayed with your quote match your policy timing, then read the PDS and Certificate of Insurance for the insured events, limits, exclusions, excess and claim terms that actually apply. ahm Basic may be worth considering if you want contents cover and its event definitions, item limits and exclusions suit your belongings. It is a weaker fit if the Basic accidental-damage distinction or the stated sublimits leave an important exposure, unless the quote and policy provide a suitable way to address it. Without your inventory, location, sum insured and actual quote, a blanket recommendation would not be meaningful.
