GitHub stars show that people noticed a repository; they do not show whether it is maintained today. AgentoolRank’s October 1, 2026 article examined 669 open-source tools for building, running, and evaluating AI agents, ranking them by activity signals rather than popularity alone. Its figures are a dated snapshot, not a live directory count.

What the 669-repository snapshot says—and what it does not

In its October 1, 2026 article, AgentoolRank reported that 213 of 669 tools (32%) had no commit on their default branch for six months or more. That group included 68 projects with at least 5,000 stars. The finding illustrates a gap between accumulated attention and recent repository activity; it does not establish that every project in the group is unusable, abandoned, or insecure. Read the October 1 article.

Counts changed across AgentoolRank’s other October snapshots. Its report, last refreshed October 6, said it tracked 609 tools and that 29% had no default-branch commit for at least six months, including 53 projects with at least 5,000 stars. The directory homepage displayed 614 tools when crawled October 7. These are separate page- and date-specific counts; they should not be combined into one supposedly definitive total. See the October 2026 report and the directory homepage.

How AgentoolRank ranks project activity

The October 1 article says its ranking combines four measures into a percentile score, refreshed daily from GitHub API data. Each captures a different aspect of activity:

  • Star pace: recent star growth measured from daily snapshots and scaled to a 30-day window. It reflects current attention, not maintenance quality.
  • Default-branch commits: commits during the previous 90 days. This can indicate active development, but the article cautions that bots can inflate commit counts.
  • Releases: releases during the previous six months. This records release activity, but a release count alone does not tell you whether changes suit your use case.
  • Median issue closure time: how long recent issues take to close. It offers a signal about issue response, not a guarantee that your issue will receive a useful answer.

The site presents the underlying measures alongside rankings and offers alternatives and head-to-head comparisons. The October report describes stars, commits, and releases as GitHub API data refreshed daily, and defines an inactive project as one with no default-branch commit for 180 days or more. Neither the ranking nor the reported inactivity threshold is an independent certification of software quality.

How to compare agent repositories for your own project

Use the activity signals as a shortlist filter, then check the repository against your technical requirements. A practical comparison should keep the time windows visible:

Signal Window in the ranking What it can help you assess What it cannot establish by itself
Star pace Daily snapshots scaled to 30 days Whether attention is rising recently Whether maintainers are merging changes or answering issues
Default-branch commits Previous 90 days Recent repository change activity Whether changes are valuable; bot activity can inflate counts
Releases Previous six months Whether releases have been published recently Whether a release supports your required model, runtime, or deployment
Median issue closure time Recent issues; the article does not specify a precise issue sample window How quickly issues are typically closed Whether a particular bug will be fixed or receive a substantive response

For each candidate, inspect the default branch’s recent changes, release notes, open and closed issues, and compatibility documentation. Confirm that it works with the model APIs, frameworks, infrastructure, and deployment constraints you actually use. AgentoolRank spans categories including agent frameworks, coding agents, MCP servers, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and memory layers, and evaluation tools; activity comparisons are most useful among projects serving a similar purpose.

Why stars and inactivity need context

A star total accumulates over time. A project can remain highly starred even as its development slows, so compare it with recent signals rather than reading the total as a maintenance score. Conversely, a quiet default branch does not prove that a project is broken: some tools change infrequently, and the inactivity threshold says nothing on its own about whether a specific version still meets your needs.

Look for evidence tied to your decision: whether the project documents supported models and versions, whether recent releases address relevant changes, and whether maintainers respond to issues that resemble yours. Treat a ranking as a way to decide what to inspect, not a substitute for that inspection.

What AgentoolRank’s ranking does not guarantee

AgentoolRank’s terms say its data comes from public sources, mainly GitHub API and package registries, and is computed according to its own rules. They also disclaim guarantees that the data is complete, accurate, or current. The terms state, “A ranking is not an endorsement.” Read the terms of service.

The article also points readers to a JSON API and an MCP endpoint with search_tools, get_tool, and get_alternatives functions; consult AgentoolRank’s own pages for current access details.
