A seized anode rod is a reason to inspect an aging water heater, not proof that its tank is about to fail. The anode is designed to corrode in place of the tank’s glass lining; once depleted, the tank becomes more vulnerable to corrosion and can eventually leak. But neither the heater’s age nor a stuck rod alone establishes that the tank is leaking or must be replaced.
What the anode rod does—and what a seized rod tells you
A sacrificial anode rod gradually wears away as it helps protect the glass-lined steel tank from corrosion. If it is depleted, the tank can begin to corrode and eventually leak, according to the water-heater manual hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy.
A rod that will not loosen tells you that removal is difficult; it does not reveal how much of the rod remains or prove that the tank itself has failed. The manual does not give a seized-rod troubleshooting method or connect a stuck rod to imminent failure. Avoid treating greater force as a diagnosis or a guaranteed fix.

Check the correct manual’s depletion criteria
The inspected manual identifies two signs that its anode should be replaced: most of the rod is less than 3/8 inch in diameter, or about one-third or more of its length exposes the support wire. These are criteria from that specific manual, not universal thresholds for every water heater. Check the instructions for the exact make and model before judging the rod.

Look for evidence about the tank itself
Rod condition and tank condition are separate questions. A depleted rod means its protective material is used up; it does not, by itself, establish that the tank is leaking. Conversely, evidence of a tank leak warrants attention regardless of whether a rod can be removed. If you cannot inspect the rod safely or are unsure what you are seeing, ask a qualified plumber to assess the appliance.
Should you replace a 20-year-old water heater?
Age is a reason to take the condition of the heater seriously, but the sources do not establish a universal replacement age or a rule that every 20-year-old heater must be replaced. The U.S. Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program uses a 13-year assumed product life in lifetime energy-cost calculations; that is a modeling assumption in its May 2024 purchasing guidance, not an observed average lifespan or replacement mandate.

Make the decision from the actual tank and service situation: whether the rod is depleted under the right manual’s criteria, whether the tank or connected plumbing shows signs of leakage, whether a compatible replacement part is available, and whether qualified service can safely remove the rod. The available guidance does not establish a universal cost threshold for choosing repair over replacement.

What to do when the anode rod is stuck
Do not assume that a removal tool or added force is safe for an old tank. The inspected manual does not specify a tool, dimensions, or technique for a seized rod, so its replacement instructions should not be treated as a stuck-rod procedure. A plumber can assess the rod and tank before deciding whether removal, replacement, or another course is appropriate.
