To join On the Rocks with friends, open its official Steam page, select Download On the Rocks Demo, install and launch it, choose the co-op option, create or join a lobby, and use Steam’s invitation flow. The preview supports online co-op for up to four players, is free, and lets the host’s save carry the group’s progress.
What you need to know before starting
On the Rocks is listed as a PC game with online co-op on its official Steam store page. The co-op feature is part of a playable preview rather than the unreleased full game. The publisher describes the demo as free on Steam and supports groups of up to four players.

Install the correct Steam demo
1. Open the official store listing
In the Steam client or a browser, open the On the Rocks store page. Confirm that the page identifies the game as On the Rocks and shows the demo option. The full game is not required for this session; the demo is a separate way to access the preview.

2. Select “Download On the Rocks Demo”
Choose the store page’s Download On the Rocks Demo control. Steam will add the demo to your library and present its normal installation prompt. Pick the library location where you want the files installed, then let Steam finish downloading before trying to invite anyone.
3. Launch the demo, not another edition
Start the installed demo from Steam. Everyone in the group should launch the same demo build. Joining cannot work if one person has only opened the store page, has not completed installation, or is attempting to use a different product entry.
Create a four-player lobby
1. Choose the co-op or multiplayer option
From the demo’s main menu, select its co-op or multiplayer path. The exact menu presentation may change during the preview, but the required action is to enter the online session flow rather than start a solo game.

2. Create the lobby
One player should create the lobby. That player becomes the host, which matters because the host’s world save and progression are used for the co-op session. If your group plans to return to the same world, decide in advance whose Steam account will host every session.
3. Invite the other players through Steam
With the lobby open, use Steam’s built-in invitation flow to select the friends who should join. The official co-op announcement describes lobby invitations and a ready check for groups of up to four. Friends must accept the Steam invitation and complete the game’s join process before the host starts.
4. Confirm the ready check
Wait until each participant appears in the lobby and is ready. The ready check is useful for catching a missing player before the shared world loads. If the group is larger than four, choose which four will play this session; the preview’s stated limit is four simultaneous players.

5. Enter the shared world
When everyone is ready, the host starts the session and the group enters the shared world. Keep the host connected while playing: because the host manages the save, ending the session or changing hosts affects which world state the group can continue.

Choose the right host before you begin
Co-op saves and progression are host-managed. This is the most important planning detail for a group that expects to play more than once. The person who creates the world should be the player whose save the group intends to continue, rather than whoever happens to launch first.
- Pick one regular host: Use the same account for subsequent sessions when possible.
- Agree on progress: Tell the group that work completed in another player’s lobby may not appear in the intended host’s world.
- Plan around host availability: If the host cannot play, the group may need to wait rather than create a different world and split progression.
- Close deliberately: Finish the session through the game’s normal exit flow so the host’s current progress has a chance to be retained.
The host rule does not prevent friends from joining; it determines where the shared world’s progress is maintained. Treat the host account as the group’s campaign owner for this preview.

What the demo includes
Approximately 40 minutes of story
The official description advertises “~40 Minutes of Story.” This is a guided portion intended to introduce the setting and the game’s basic activities. The exact time will vary with how quickly your group moves and whether players explore, but the published figure is an approximate content description, not a guaranteed timed session.
An endless sandbox
After or alongside the guided portion, the demo offers an endless sandbox. That mode is the better choice for a group that wants to experiment together after completing the story segment. Because it is described as endless, it is not presented as a fixed-length second chapter.

The co-op feature is explicitly a Preview and may contain bugs or rough edges. Random city duels are currently single-player, so do not expect every activity to become a four-person event. The developers also say hostile minimap indicators still need multiplayer validation. A missing or inconsistent indicator therefore may reflect an unfinished preview feature rather than a problem with your installation.

Solo versus four-player co-op

This distinction helps set expectations: co-op expands the shared world experience, but it does not automatically convert every solo activity into a multiplayer activity.
Troubleshoot an invitation or join failure
The demo does not appear in your library
- Return to the official Steam listing and select Download On the Rocks Demo rather than only viewing the full-game listing.
- Check that Steam completed installation and that you are launching the demo entry.
- Have each participant install the demo before the host creates the lobby.
A friend cannot see or accept the invite
- Ask the friend to launch the demo first, then have the host reopen the lobby’s Steam invitation flow.
- Confirm that the host has created a co-op lobby, not a solo session.
- Check the lobby count. Once four players are present, another friend cannot join that session.
- If the invitation still fails, close and relaunch the demo for both players and create a fresh lobby. The feature is a preview, so transient problems are possible.
The group cannot start the session
- Make sure every participant has joined the same lobby.
- Use the ready check and wait for every player to be marked ready.
- Verify that the host, rather than a joining player, is attempting to start the world.
- If the issue persists, leave the lobby, relaunch the demo and have the intended save owner create it again.
The world or progression looks wrong
First check who hosted the session. Co-op progression is managed by the host, so joining a different friend’s lobby can load that friend’s world rather than the group’s usual save. If the host is correct and a feature still behaves unexpectedly, remember that the co-op implementation is a Preview with known unfinished areas.
Minimap indicators or activities do not match expectations
Hostile minimap indicators are still awaiting multiplayer validation, and random city duels are currently single-player. Those limitations explain why an indicator may be absent or why a duel does not admit the whole group; they are not evidence that the four-player lobby itself has failed.
Plan a smooth first session
- Choose the host: Select the player whose save should contain the group’s progress.
- Install early: Everyone downloads the free demo from the official Steam page before the planned start time.
- Set the group size: Limit the active party to four players.
- Start with the story: Use the guided segment to learn the shared-world flow.
- Move to the sandbox: Continue into the endless sandbox if the group wants open-ended play.
- Keep expectations realistic: Treat bugs, rough edges and incomplete multiplayer indicators as possible because this is a Preview.
- Return to the same host: Reuse the host account when continuing the group’s world.
This plan avoids the two most common sources of confusion: a friend trying to join before installing the demo and a group discovering too late that its progress belongs to a different host.
How the demo relates to the full release
The Steam store lists the full game for Q4 2026, while the co-op download described here is a separate demo. Playing the preview does not mean the unreleased product is already available, and the preview’s current limitations should not be treated as a complete specification of the final release.
The publisher’s announcement also connects the preview with Steam Next Fest, scheduled for October 19–26, 2026 in that announcement. Event schedules are time-sensitive, so consult the current Steam listing or publisher announcement if you are checking access around those dates.
