Godlike.Host offers hosted Valheim servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
To join a Valheim dedicated server, launch the game, select your character, and open Join Game. You can find the server by its published name, connect with Join IP using the host’s address and port, or use Add server with a crossplay join code. The correct method depends on whether the server uses the Steam backend or crossplay.
What you need before connecting
Ask the server operator for the information that matches the server’s backend. Having the wrong address or using a Steam-only connection method from an incompatible platform is the most common reason a valid-looking connection fails.

If you are outside the host’s home network, a private local address is not enough. You need the host’s public address and a reachable port, or a crossplay join code. A private LAN address works only for players on the same local network; this is a networking consequence of how local and internet-routable addresses work.
The three ways to join
Find the server in the community list
This is the simplest route when the host has published the server correctly. In Valheim, select your character, open Join Game, and search the community servers for the host’s published name. Select the matching entry and enter the password if prompted.

Use the exact name supplied by the host. A server can be running while absent from the list if it is not published, if the list is filtering it out, or if your platform and the server are using different backends. When that happens, use Join IP or the crossplay code instead of repeatedly refreshing the list.
Connect with Join IP
For a direct connection, open Join Game, choose Join IP, and enter the address in server-address:port form. The host must provide the address that is reachable from your location.

The documented default is commonly entered as IP:2456. For example, 203.0.113.10:2456 shows the required format; it is an illustrative documentation address, not a server you should expect to reach. Replace it with the real address and port from the operator.
Type the colon between the address and port exactly as shown. Do not add spaces, omit the port, or substitute a private address when you are connecting from another network. If the host changed the configured port, use that value rather than assuming 2456.

Join with a crossplay code
Crossplay servers can provide a join code instead of asking every player to type an address. In Valheim, open Join Game, select Add server, and paste the code exactly as the host supplied it. Enter the server password if requested.
Iron Gate’s official FAQ gives the same flow: “Your friend will then have to head over to the ‘Join Game’ section, press ‘Add server’ and paste the code.” Request a new code if the old one no longer works after the host restarts the server or changes the session.
Steam servers and crossplay servers are different
The connection backend determines which players can join and what the host must configure.

The official Valheim guide states: “You can connect to a Crossplay server using the public IP address and port number, a join code or via the server list.” That does not mean every server accepts every platform: the host must actually enable the crossplay backend, and your game platform must support the corresponding connection.

Exact joining procedure
- Confirm that the server is running. Ask the operator whether it has finished starting and which backend it uses: Steam or crossplay.
- Get the right connection detail. Obtain the published name, public address and port, or current crossplay code. A host may provide more than one method so you have a fallback.
- Launch Valheim. Wait at the main menu, then select the character you want to use.
- Open Join Game. This is the menu containing the community-server browser and direct-connection controls.
- Choose one discovery path. Search the server list by name, select Join IP and enter
address:port, or select Add server and paste a crossplay code. - Submit the connection. Check the spelling, punctuation, and port before confirming.
- Enter the password. Use the exact password provided by the operator; a correct address still fails authentication when the password is wrong.
- Wait for the world to load. If the attempt fails, keep the same character and try the alternate method that the server backend supports.
Joining from Xbox, Microsoft Store, or Game Pass
Xbox
An Xbox can join a dedicated server when crossplay is enabled on both the Xbox setup and the server. An Xbox cannot host the dedicated-server process itself. If the server is Steam-only, enabling an Xbox client does not make that server crossplay-compatible; the operator must run the crossplay backend.
Microsoft Store and Game Pass
The official FAQ documents cross-platform joining through the crossplay join-code flow. Ask the operator for the current code, open Join Game, choose Add server, and paste it. If the code is rejected, confirm that the server is still running with crossplay enabled and request a fresh code.
What the host must configure
Steam backend: port forwarding
For a Steam dedicated server, the official guide identifies 2456–2457 as the default port range and says the configured range must be reachable from the internet through router port forwarding. The operator must forward the same range used by the server and give players the corresponding public address and port.
Players cannot repair a missing port-forwarding rule from inside Valheim. If a direct connection fails while the address is correctly typed, ask the host to verify that the server process is running, the router forwards the configured range, and the computer’s firewall permits the server.

Crossplay backend: relay access
Crossplay uses a relay, so the host does not need router port forwarding for friends connecting from outside the local network. The operator still has to start the server with crossplay enabled and provide a valid join code, published listing, or supported address-and-port combination.

A dedicated server can run on a spare home machine, but that model leaves the operator responsible for starting the process, maintaining the machine, network configuration, and keeping the world available. Rented hosting is an alternative for people who do not want to maintain a home computer. Before choosing it, confirm the service supports the required backend, crossplay, backups, uptime expectations, and a region suitable for the players. Those details vary by provider and should be checked on the current service plan.
How to choose the best connection method

Troubleshooting connection failures
The server does not appear in the list
- Confirm that the operator has started the dedicated server and published it.
- Ask whether it is Steam-only or crossplay, then make sure your platform is compatible.
- Search using the exact published name.
- Use Join IP or Add server with a code instead of relying on the list.
“Failed to connect” appears after entering an address
- Check every character in the address, including the colon before the port.
- Use the port supplied by the host; do not assume the default if the operator changed it.
- Verify that you received a public address when you are outside the host’s network.
- Ask whether the server uses Steam or crossplay and switch to the matching method.
- For a Steam server, have the operator confirm forwarding for the configured range and that the server is running.
Xbox cannot join
- Verify that crossplay is enabled on the server and on the Xbox configuration.
- Confirm that the server operator, not the Xbox player, is running the dedicated-server process.
- Use the crossplay code flow rather than treating the server as Steam-only.
A private address works for the host but not for remote friends
A local address identifies a device inside the host’s network. It is appropriate when everyone is on that same network, but remote players need the host’s public address with a reachable port or a crossplay code. Ask the operator which of those details is intended for players outside the home.
The join code is invalid or stopped working
Join codes can change after a restart or session change. Request the current code from the operator, paste it without adding spaces or other characters, and retry while the crossplay server is running.

The password is rejected
Confirm the password with the operator and enter it exactly as provided. A successful address lookup does not bypass the server password.
Address and port checklist
- Use
address:port, not an address by itself, when the host instructs you to use Join IP. - Use the public address for an internet connection; reserve private LAN addresses for players on the same local network.
- Use
2456only when the host confirms the documented default is still in use. - Remember that the Steam default is a range,
2456–2457; the operator must make the configured range reachable even though the player commonly enters the supplied connection port. - Do not guess a port from the server name. Ask the operator for the complete value.
Questions to ask the server operator
When someone sends only “the server is online,” reply with a short checklist:
- What is the exact published server name?
- Is it Steam-only or crossplay?
- Should I use the community list, a public address and port, or a join code?
- If it is direct IP, what exact
address:portshould I enter? - If it is crossplay, what is the current code?
- What password should I enter?
These questions establish the backend, discovery method, network route, and authentication detail before you begin troubleshooting.
Bottom line
Use the community list when the server is published, Join IP with the host’s reachable address:port for a direct connection, and Add server with a current join code for crossplay. Steam servers require the host’s configured ports to be reachable through port forwarding; crossplay uses a relay and does not require that router step. Xbox players can join only when crossplay is enabled, and they cannot run the dedicated server themselves.
