Godlike.Host offers hosted Team Fortress 2 servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
To join a Team Fortress 2 server directly, enable the developer console, press the backtick/tilde key, and enter connect SERVER_IP:PORT. Include the port—27015 is a common reference port, but the host may use another one. You can also add the address through Steam’s server browser at View > Game Servers, then Favorites > Add server by IP. The console method is usually quickest; the browser method is useful when you want to save the server in Favorites.
What you need before connecting
Ask the server owner or administrator for the complete endpoint, written as an IP address followed by a colon and port, for example 203.0.113.25:27015. An IP without its port is incomplete for a direct connection. The official Team Fortress 2 dedicated-server reference commonly uses port 27015, but that does not mean every community server listens there.

- Server address: the numeric IP (or host-provided address) and port.
- Password: only if the administrator has protected the server.
- Working game installation: start Team Fortress 2 through Steam so its client can process the connection command.
- Network access: your firewall must allow Team Fortress 2 to communicate.
If the host gave you an address such as 203.0.113.25 but no port, ask for the port instead of guessing. Entering only the IP is one of the most common reasons a direct connection fails.
Method 1: Connect with the developer console
The console route sends the address straight to the game and is the most common way to join a server by IP. Console access is disabled by default, so enable it once before using the command.

Enable the developer console in the keyboard settings
- Launch Team Fortress 2.
- Open the game’s Options menu and go to the advanced keyboard settings. The exact wording can vary with client updates.
- Turn on the setting that enables the developer console.
- Check the key assigned to open the console. The usual default is the backtick/tilde key, shown as
`or~and normally located above the Tab key on a US keyboard. - Apply the setting, return to the game, and press that key. A console panel should appear over the game.
Keyboard layouts differ. If the key printed on your keyboard does not open the console, return to the keyboard settings and inspect or change the console binding rather than repeatedly pressing unrelated keys.
Use the connect command
At the console prompt, type the address in this form and press Enter:

connect SERVER_IP:PORTReplace both placeholders with the values supplied by the host. For example:
connect 203.0.113.25:27015The command tells the game to leave the current session and attempt the specified endpoint. Keep the colon between the IP and port, and do not add spaces inside the address.
Join a password-protected server
There are two reported password flows. You can put the password in the same console command:

connect SERVER_IP:PORT; password SERVER_PASSWORDFor example:
connect 203.0.113.25:27015; password ExamplePass123The semicolon separates the connection command from the password command. If you prefer not to include the password on that line, enter only connect SERVER_IP:PORT; when the server requires authentication, the game may prompt you for the password. Community guides document both behaviors, so follow the prompt if it appears and confirm the spelling with the server administrator if authentication fails.
Reconnect without retyping the address
After a connection drops, two console helpers can save time:
retryattempts to reconnect to the last server.reloadreloads the connection to the server you are currently using.
These commands are useful only after the game has a previous or current server connection to work with; they do not replace the initial IP-and-port command.
Method 2: Add the server in Steam’s server browser
Steam provides a server-browser route that lets you save an address in Favorites and connect from a list. Community instructions use the following path:
- Open the Steam client.
- Choose View > Game Servers.
- Open the Favorites tab.
- Click Add server by IP (the label may vary after a Steam client update).
- Paste the complete address, including the port, into the address field.
- Add the entry to your Favorites list.
- Select the saved server and choose Connect.
- If the server is protected, enter its password when Steam or the game asks for it.
This browser workflow is documented by community sources. The exact current in-game server-browser screen has not been independently verified, and Steam periodically changes menu labels. If your client uses slightly different wording, look for the equivalent Game Servers window, a Favorites view, and an option to add a server by IP.

Saving the entry is useful when you revisit the same server: you can select it from Favorites instead of reopening the console and retyping the endpoint. A saved entry does not make an offline, full, incorrectly addressed, or firewalled server reachable; it only stores the connection details.
Method 3: Add a launch option for an automatic connection
You can instruct Team Fortress 2 to attempt a connection every time it starts by adding +connect IP:PORT to the game’s Steam launch options. The value must include the port, for example:
+connect 203.0.113.25:27015- Open Team Fortress 2’s properties in Steam.
- Find the launch-options field.
- Enter
+connect IP:PORTwith the host’s actual address. - Close the properties window and launch the game.
Because this option runs on every launch, community guides generally favor the console for occasional connections. Remove the launch option when you no longer want an automatic attempt; otherwise the game will continue trying that address each time it starts.
Console, browser, or launch option: which should you use?

For most players, start with the console. Use Favorites when you want a reusable list, and use a launch option only when connecting at startup is genuinely desirable.
How to diagnose a failed connection
A failed attempt usually points to one of four conditions: an incorrect address or port, a firewall blocking the game, a server that is full, or a server that is offline. Work through these checks in order.

1. Recheck the complete address
- Compare every digit of the IP with the value supplied by the host.
- Make sure a colon separates the IP and port:
IP:PORT. - Confirm that you did not paste an extra space, punctuation mark, or explanatory text.
- Ask whether the server uses the commonly referenced
27015port or a different port. Never assume the common value is universal.
If you entered only the IP, run the command again with the port included. If the administrator recently moved the server, request a fresh address rather than relying on an old Favorite entry or launch option.
2. Determine whether the server is online and accepting players
An offline server cannot accept a connection, and a full server may reject you even when the address is correct. Check with the host or administrator before changing local settings. If other players can join while you cannot, continue with the local firewall and command checks; if nobody can join, the server’s availability is the more likely cause.
3. Check the firewall permission
Your operating-system or security-suite firewall must allow Team Fortress 2 to communicate. If the firewall displayed a permission prompt when the game first launched, denying it can prevent direct connections. Open the firewall’s allowed-app controls, ensure Team Fortress 2 is permitted on the network you are using, then restart the game and try the same command again.
The precise firewall screens differ by operating system and security product, so use the product’s current “allowed apps” or “firewall exceptions” area. Do not disable the firewall wholesale just to test one server; create or restore the game-specific permission instead.
4. Retry after correcting the cause
Once the host confirms the endpoint, the server is online, and Team Fortress 2 is allowed through the firewall, open the console and run:

connect SERVER_IP:PORTIf the previous connection was interrupted and the endpoint has not changed, retry can attempt the last server again. Use reload when you need to reload the current connection.
5. Resolve password errors
A server can reject a technically correct address when the password is wrong or missing. Copy the password exactly as supplied, including capitalization if the administrator’s instructions require it. You can use the combined command:
connect SERVER_IP:PORT; password SERVER_PASSWORDAlternatively, connect without the password and wait for the game’s prompt. If one method does not produce a prompt, ask the administrator which password flow the server expects; community documentation reports both combined-command and prompt-based behavior.
6. If the Steam browser entry does not appear
Reopen View > Game Servers and check the Favorites tab rather than a general server list. Verify that the entry was actually added and that the saved value contains the port. Steam labels can change, so look for a function equivalent to “add server by IP” if the wording is different. When the browser path remains unclear, the console method avoids the client’s changing menu labels.

Public server with no password
connect 203.0.113.25:27015Use the host’s real address in place of the documentation example. The game will attempt the connection immediately after you press Enter.
Password-protected server
connect 203.0.113.25:27015; password ExamplePass123If the administrator tells you the password is handled interactively, omit the second command and enter it when prompted.

+connect 203.0.113.25:27015Place this in Team Fortress 2’s Steam launch options, not in the in-game console. Remove it later if you want normal launches without an automatic server attempt.
Quick pre-join checklist
- Have the exact IP and port from the server host.
- Include the colon and port in every console, browser, or launch-option entry.
- Use
27015only when that is the port the host provided; it is a common reference, not a guarantee. - Enable the developer console before pressing the backtick/tilde key.
- For Steam’s browser, use View > Game Servers > Favorites > Add server by IP, then save and connect.
- Keep the password ready, or be prepared for the game to prompt for it.
- If connection fails, verify the address, server availability, and firewall permission before changing anything else.
Bottom line
Use connect IP:PORT in the enabled developer console for the fastest direct join. Save the address through Steam’s Game Servers Favorites tab when you want a reusable entry, and reserve +connect IP:PORT for setups that should connect automatically every time Team Fortress 2 launches.
