To join a Space Engineers multiplayer session, open the game, wait at the Main Screen, select Join Game, and choose the discovery method that matches the host: Servers for public dedicated servers, Games for public player-hosted sessions, LAN for a game on your local network, Friends for an eligible friend-hosted world, or Direct Connect when you have a server IP address.
On PC, check the Steam/EOS network toggle before connecting. Steam listings are for PC players using Steam, while EOS is the crossplay route for compatible PC, Xbox, and PlayStation sessions.

The connection path at a glance
The normal route is short:
- Launch Space Engineers and remain on the Main Screen.
- Select Join Game.
- Open Servers, Games, LAN, or Friends, depending on how the session is advertised.
- For a private server, select Direct Connect and enter the IP address supplied by the host.
- Accept any required mod downloads, then wait for the world to load.
If the server is intended for cross-platform play and you are on PC, select EOS rather than Steam. A console cannot join a Steam-only listing.
What each Join Game tab means
The tabs are different discovery methods, not different versions of the game. Choosing the wrong one can make a working session appear to be missing.

For a public dedicated server, open its Server Details before joining. The details view can show the world settings, installed mods, current player count, and uptime, giving you a chance to confirm that the listing is the one you intended to use.
Joining a public dedicated server
1. Open the server browser
From the Main Screen, choose Join Game, then open Servers. Browse the available public dedicated-server entries in the network you selected. On PC, confirm whether the list is showing Steam or EOS servers before assuming a listing is unavailable.

Select the server and open Server Details. Check the world settings, mod list, current players, and uptime. These fields help distinguish a lightly modified survival world from a heavily customized one and can explain a large download or a different starting experience.
3. Confirm platform compatibility
Steam listings are for PC users with Steam accounts. EOS listings are the crossplay route for compatible PC, Xbox, Game Pass, and PlayStation sessions. If you are joining from a console, the server must be configured for EOS/crossplay; a Steam-only server will not accept the connection.

4. Connect and let required files download
Select the server’s join command. If the world requires mods, the client will ask to download the files. Allow the process to finish before retrying. The first mod download can take a long time, so a pause during the initial connection does not necessarily mean the server has failed.
5. Wait for the world to finish loading
After the mod and world data are available, the game loads the session. If you reach the world, record the server’s name and the network type you used; that information makes a later reconnection faster.
Connecting with Direct Connect
Direct Connect is for a host who gives you the address of a private game or server. It is not a replacement for the public browser when the server is already listed there.
- Open Join Game from the Main Screen.
- Choose Direct Connect.
- Paste or type the IP address exactly as the host supplied it.
- If the host supplied a port as part of the address or connection instructions, preserve that information rather than substituting a different value.
- Start the connection and approve any required mod downloads.
The address must be reachable from your network, and the host must have the session running and configured to accept outside players. An internal address supplied for a home network may work only for people on that network; an Internet player generally needs the host’s externally reachable address.

Joining a friend’s hosted world
A friend-hosted world is a player session rather than a separately running dedicated service. The host controls who can join through the world’s multiplayer access settings.
Use the Friends tab
Open Join Game, then select Friends. A friend’s game appears only when the host’s settings make the session visible and the game is online. If the session is not listed, ask the host to verify that multiplayer is enabled and that the access setting permits friends to join.

On Steam, the host can use the in-game Invite control. An invite is useful when the world does not appear in the Friends list or when the host wants to control exactly who receives access. You still need to be using the network compatible with the host’s session.
Understand the host’s limits
A player-hosted world depends on the host’s game session. If the host leaves or stops the session, other players cannot continue as though the world were an independently running server. For a world that must remain available while the owner is offline, use a dedicated-server arrangement instead.

Steam and EOS: choosing the correct network
On PC, the Steam/EOS toggle determines which network’s sessions you see. This choice is the most common reason a player cannot find a server that a friend can see.

How to join a crossplay server from PC
- Open Join Game.
- Switch the network selector from Steam to EOS.
- Search the Servers, Games, or Friends tab again.
- Join only a listing identified as compatible with the crossplay setup.
Changing to EOS does not convert a Steam-only server into a crossplay server. The server owner must configure an EOS-compatible session. Conversely, a PC player looking only at Steam listings will not see an EOS session simply because the game itself is installed through Steam.
Mods and the first connection
Mods are part of the server’s world definition. When a server requires them, the client normally downloads the necessary files while joining. You do not need to locate each mod manually before trying the connection.
What to expect
- The first connection can take substantially longer than later connections because the files are downloaded locally.
- The download time depends on the amount of mod data and your connection, so the game may appear inactive while it is still working.
- The server’s details page can show that mods are present before you join.
If the mod download does not complete
- Cancel the attempt only after allowing a reasonable period for the first download.
- Return to the server’s details and verify that you are connecting to the intended listing.
- Check that you are using the correct Steam or EOS network.
- Try the connection again while the server is online.
- If the server owner has changed the mod set, ask whether the world is currently being updated; a changed collection can require a fresh download.
The official multiplayer guidance warns that the first mod download may take a long time. Treat that as a normal first-join condition, not as proof that every slow connection is broken.

Dedicated servers versus player-hosted games
A dedicated server lets players connect to a third-party host instead of relying on a player-hosted peer-to-peer session. It is intended for a persistent multiplayer world that continues running independently of any one player’s game client.

The dedicated-server software is available free to owners of Space Engineers. That does not mean operating a public server has no infrastructure cost: hardware, network access, administration, and any hosting arrangement remain separate considerations.
Troubleshooting by symptom
There is no single fix for every failed connection. Start with the symptom that matches what you see.
The server is not in the list
- Check whether you are looking in Servers, Games, Friends, or LAN. A session advertised through one route may not appear in another.
- On PC, switch between Steam and EOS and search again.
- Ask the host whether the session is online and whether its visibility settings allow public or friend discovery.
- For a console player, confirm that the server is EOS/crossplay-compatible rather than Steam-only.
Your friend can see the game, but you cannot
- Confirm that both of you are using the same network type when applicable.
- Ask the host to verify multiplayer access settings and send an in-game Steam invite if the session is being hosted on Steam.
- If you were given a private address, use Direct Connect instead of waiting for the session to appear in Friends.
Direct Connect fails immediately
- Compare the address character by character with the host’s message.
- Ask whether the address is an Internet-facing address or an internal LAN address.
- Confirm that the server is currently running and accepting connections.
- Verify that you selected the network expected by the host, especially when the server is EOS-based.
The connection stalls while downloading
- Allow extra time for the first mod download.
- Review the server details to confirm the listed mod set.
- Retry after the host confirms that the server is online and has finished updating its mods.
A console player cannot join a PC player
Check the server’s network, not merely the player’s hardware. A Steam-only PC server cannot accept a console connection. The host needs an EOS/crossplay-compatible server, and the PC player must select EOS when joining.
Hosting choices named by the official documentation
The official dedicated-server host listing names GTX Gaming for the PC version and Nitrado for the Xbox version. Hosting terms, prices, regions, and program availability can change, so verify the current offer directly before signing up. The host choice does not change the joining workflow: players still use the appropriate network, server listing, invite, or Direct Connect address supplied by the operator.
A practical pre-join checklist
- You know whether the session is a public server, public player-hosted game, LAN game, friend session, or private IP connection.
- You selected Join Game from the Main Screen.
- PC players checked the Steam/EOS toggle.
- Console players confirmed that the server supports EOS crossplay.
- You reviewed Server Details for world settings, mods, player count, and uptime when joining a public dedicated server.
- You have the complete address when using Direct Connect.
- You are prepared for a potentially long first mod download.
- The host has the world online and has configured multiplayer access for the players who need to join.
Which route should you use?
Use Servers when you want to browse persistent public worlds. Use Games for a public player-hosted session in your region. Use LAN when everyone is on the same local network. Use Friends or an invite for a friend’s online world. Use Direct Connect when the operator gives you a private address. If players use different platforms, make EOS and crossplay compatibility the first check rather than the last.
The essential sequence remains Main Screen → Join Game → matching tab or Direct Connect. Correct network selection, host permissions, and patience during the first mod download resolve most normal joining problems without changing any other game settings.
