To join a Mario Kart World online tournament, open the game, choose Online Play, press the minus button to search for an event, and enter the four-digit Event ID shown on that tournament’s official Nintendo page. Then participate in the game during the event’s listed Event Period. You need a Nintendo Switch 2, the game, a Nintendo Account, internet access, and Nintendo Switch Online membership.

The key is to use the listing for the specific event you want: its dates, code, eligibility terms, and race rules are not universal. An event code is also different from the six-digit Room ID used to join a friend-hosted room.

What you need before joining

  • A Nintendo Switch 2 system and Mario Kart World.
  • A Nintendo Account.
  • An internet connection.
  • A Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo says membership is sold separately, online features are not available in every country, and terms apply.

Those are the listed prerequisites for participating online. The material reviewed does not state a membership price, so check Nintendo’s current membership information for the price and options available in your country. Do not assume that owning the game and console alone is enough to enter an online event.

Check the specific event page before you start. Its region, eligibility rules, schedule, race settings, ranking requirements, and any prize or reward conditions apply to that event. Nintendo’s Fall Cup 2026 page, for example, has event-specific rules and eligibility details; those should not be assumed to apply to another tournament. An official event listing is the place to confirm whether the event is relevant to your region and whether you meet its terms.

#1 Best Overall
Mario Kart™ World (Nintendo Switch 2)
  • Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
  • Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
  • Ride on rails, jump off walls, skim across water, and more as you race for the finish line
  • Take on the adrenaline-packed Knockout Tour—a fierce 24-driver elimination mode
  • Explore courses at your own pace and wander the world to discover fun surprises in Free Roam

It also helps to have the event page available while you enter. Note the exact four-digit Event ID and the Event Period before opening the game. That way, you can distinguish the current code from an old announcement or a code for a different event. If you are joining with the intention of qualifying for a ranking or reward, read those conditions before you begin playing, rather than assuming that simply finding the event satisfies every requirement.

How to enter an event in Mario Kart World

  1. Find the official Nintendo event listing. Confirm that it is the event you want, and note its Event Period and four-digit Event ID. Read its region and eligibility requirements, rules, and any conditions for rankings or rewards. Event listings are event-specific; a prior challenge or tournament announcement is not a reliable substitute for the current listing.
  2. Open the game and choose Online Play. The event search is within the game’s online play route, rather than the friend-room route. Start with the event instructions on the Nintendo page if you are unsure which type of online activity you are trying to join.
  3. Open event search. Press the minus button. Nintendo describes the route as Online Play > Press the – Button to search for an event > Enter 4-digit Event ID.
  4. Enter the event’s four-digit ID. Use the ID from that event’s current official listing. Event IDs are specific to an event, so an old code is not a substitute for the code on the listing you intend to join. Check all four digits against the listing rather than relying on memory.
  5. Select the event and participate in-game during its Event Period. Follow any prompts shown in the game. Nintendo’s Fall Cup page states: “To enter, you must participate in the Event in the Mario Kart World game during the Event Period.” Entering the ID by itself should not be treated as completing participation. The event page’s wording makes the important distinction: participation has to happen in the game within the specified period.

Before you enter, make sure you have the right listing open and that the event has not passed its end date. Once the event is found, use the in-game prompts rather than assuming that the code alone finishes the process. If the page describes an event period, it is that time window—not the date you first saw the announcement—that determines when participation is due.

Nintendo’s general event instructions and a particular tournament page can use slightly different wording for the search route. The practical sequence is consistent: open Online Play, use the minus button to search for an event, and enter its four-digit Event ID. Follow the specific page if it provides additional instructions for its event.

Example: Nintendo of America’s Fall Cup 2026

Nintendo of America’s Fall Cup 2026 listing gives a concrete example of the information to look for. The listed dates run from September 19 through December 12, 2026, and the listed Event ID is 3616. These dates and this ID apply to that event, not to tournaments generally. Check the live listing before using them, since the code and schedule are event-specific. An event-specific example is useful for recognizing the format of a listing, but it should never be treated as a permanent code or as a directory of every tournament.

Fall Cup 2026 listing detail Published setting
Mode VS Race
Engine class 150cc
Teams No teams
Items Normal items
COM racers No COM
Course selection Connected course selection
Race limit Up to 32 races

These are the Fall Cup’s published settings, not universal tournament defaults. The table is a reminder of what to compare when you look at a different event: mode, engine class, teams, item rules, whether COM racers are included, course selection, and the maximum number of races. A tournament with a different listing may use different settings.

The 32-race limit is an operational rule for this event, not a general statistic or a promise that every tournament allows the same number of races. Likewise, the listed settings tell you what to expect for this Cup but do not establish that other events use a 150cc VS Race or the same course-selection format. For another event, use the settings and rules on its own official page.

The Fall Cup page also demonstrates why it is worth reading beyond the code and dates. Eligibility, ranking treatment, and any other rules can affect whether participation counts in the way a player expects. If a tournament offers a ranking, prize, or point reward, look for the separate conditions attached to that outcome rather than inferring them from the event name or the fact that you entered its ID.

How a tournament event differs from a friend room

An Event ID is for finding a listed event or tournament. A friend-hosted online room uses a different route and a six-digit Room ID. In the game, choose Friends, select an online friend or choose Search by Room ID, then enter the Room ID supplied by the host. The two codes are not interchangeable: tournament event search uses a four-digit Event ID, while the friend-room process uses a six-digit Room ID.

This distinction answers a common point of confusion: if someone gives you a six-digit number to join their room, do not enter it into event search. Conversely, if Nintendo’s listing provides a four-digit Event ID, do not look for a friend’s room to use it. Start from the correct menu for the activity you intend to join. Event search is for a listed event; the Friends route is for a room hosted by or associated with a friend.

A friend room and a tournament event also serve different purposes. The room instructions describe joining a host’s online room, while an event listing publishes its own period, format, and rules. A friend-hosted room is not automatically a tournament just because players race together, and a listed tournament is not joined by using the room-ID process.

What to verify on the event page

  • Dates and time: Check the Event Period and any stated time zone. Do not assume the dates on an older listing are still active or that a displayed date corresponds to your local time. If you are close to the event’s start or end, confirm the current schedule rather than relying on a saved screenshot or old announcement.
  • Event ID: Copy the four-digit code from the listing for the event you plan to enter. Check that it belongs to the same event page whose dates and rules you have reviewed.
  • Region and eligibility: Confirm that you can participate under the listed region, age, and other eligibility terms. Availability of online features may differ by country, and an event can set its own requirements.
  • Race format and rules: Review the mode, class, team and item settings, course-selection rules, race limit, and any linked official rules. These details define the particular event, so do not carry over assumptions from a previous tournament.
  • Rankings and rewards: Look for additional conditions that apply to rankings, prizes, or points. The Fall Cup page notes that account restrictions or certain player names may affect whether a player is included in rankings or how they are displayed. A player should check those terms before expecting a score or result to appear in a particular way.
  • Public results: Nintendo notes that information tied to your account, including your username, player icon, and score, may be visible on an event results page. Consider this disclosure when deciding whether to participate and review the page for the specific event’s details.

These checks are useful even when you have joined online events before. The entry path may be familiar, but the code, date range, eligibility, settings, and result conditions can change from one event to another. Treat each event’s official Nintendo page as the controlling source for that event. A prior Nintendo online challenge can help explain the general in-game search route, but its dates and code may have expired and should not be reused as current entry details.

If there is more than one event you are considering, compare them side by side rather than choosing by title alone. The practical comparison points are the Event Period and time zone, Event ID, race mode and settings, eligibility and region, any attempt or race limits, ranking or prize requirements, and what account information may appear in public results. The official page for each event governs its own terms; another event’s settings cannot fill in missing details.

If the event does not appear or the code does not work

  1. Recheck the listing. Make sure the Event Period is active and that you are using the code shown for the event you mean to join. A code from another event, or an expired listing, will not identify the intended current event. If you found the number in an older article or challenge announcement, return to the current official listing.
  2. Check the code length and menu. Event search takes a four-digit Event ID. If you are in the Friends room flow, you are in the wrong place for a tournament listing; that process asks for a six-digit Room ID. Confirm both the number of digits and the menu route before trying again.
  3. Confirm prerequisites and eligibility. Verify the Nintendo Switch Online membership, internet access, account status, and any event-specific region or age requirements. Nintendo lists a Switch 2, Mario Kart World, Nintendo Account, internet access, and Nintendo Switch Online membership among the requirements. If an event has additional eligibility terms, those apply too.
  4. Read the event rules and in-game prompts. If the listing imposes a condition or the account has restrictions, that may affect eligibility or ranking display. Follow the event’s stated participation process during its active period. Finding the event is not the same thing as satisfying every ranking or reward condition.
  5. Compare the information you are using. Check that the date, code, and event name all come from the same official listing. A correct code copied from a different event is still the wrong code for the event you mean to join. If an older announcement disagrees with the current page, rely on the current official listing for the event you are trying to join.

If the listing’s schedule or ID conflicts with information from an older announcement, rely on the current official listing for the event you are trying to join. The general search instructions explain where to enter an event code, while the live event page supplies the details that identify that event.
