To join a faction in Space Engineers, press K, open the Factions tab, select a faction, and click Join. That button sends an application; a leader or founder must accept it before you become a member. If you already belong to another faction, leave it first.

What joining a faction actually does
Factions are the multiplayer system for organizing cooperative groups in Space Engineers. From the Factions screen, players can found or join groups and manage diplomatic choices such as declaring war or peace. Joining is not an automatic alliance: selecting Join submits a request that a leader or founder must approve.
The distinction between an application and membership explains most confusion. Until someone with the required authority accepts you, you remain outside the faction even though your request may appear to have been sent successfully.

Requirements before you apply
- Use the documented keyboard workflow. The official Factions documentation specifies pressing K to open the Terminal and then choosing the Factions tab.
- Leave your current faction first. The documented rules require you not to be a member of another faction when joining a different one. The same restriction applies when founding a faction.
- Know that approval is required. A leader or founder has to accept the application; clicking Join alone does not complete the process.
- Have a way to contact the group. If the faction uses chat for introductions or instructions, contact its members after submitting your request and wait for an authorized player to respond.
The cited official material establishes the keyboard path, membership rule, and approval requirement. It does not establish universal controller mappings for console platforms, so the exact steps below are for the documented keyboard interface.
Step-by-step: join an existing faction

Open the Terminal
Press K. This opens the Terminal interface used to manage several game systems, including factions.

Open the Factions tab
Choose Factions in the Terminal. The official guide describes the path as “Press K and go to the Factions tab.”

Check your current membership
Before selecting another group, confirm that you are not currently a member of a faction. If you are, leave it using the faction controls before trying to apply elsewhere. A player cannot join a different faction while still belonging to the current one.

Select the faction you want
Review the available faction entries and select the target group. The game presents the available action for that faction in the same screen.

Click Join
Choose Join to submit your application. Treat this as a request, not a completed enrollment: the group still has to accept you.

Contact the faction and wait
If you need to explain who you are or agree on server rules, use the game’s chat to contact the faction. A leader or founder must confirm the request. Membership begins only after that acceptance is recorded.
Why you are not in the faction after clicking Join
The most common explanation is that your application is waiting for approval. The official Factions page states: “Players can ask to join any faction, but must be accepted by a leader or founder before they actually become a member.” The Join button therefore confirms that your request was sent; it does not grant access immediately.
Application still pending
Allow time for a leader or founder to see and approve the request. Contact the group in chat if its members need context or if the server’s play schedule means the approving player is not online.
You are still in another faction
Return to K > Factions and leave your existing faction. The game’s documented rule requires you to be unaffiliated before you can join a different group.

You selected the wrong group
Reopen the Factions tab and verify the selected entry before submitting another request. If the first request is already pending, ask the faction’s leadership how it wants to handle the application rather than repeatedly clicking Join.
You are using a different platform control scheme
The cited documentation provides the keyboard shortcut K but does not establish exact controller mappings. If you are on a platform that does not use the keyboard interface, consult that platform’s current in-game controls; do not assume the keyboard shortcut has a one-to-one controller equivalent.
What changes after a leader accepts you
Acceptance changes your status from applicant to faction member. The documented permissions and protections include:
- Members can share access to owned blocks and grids with other faction members.
- The documented member rank can interact with faction-shared blocks.
- A member is not targeted by faction weapons.
- Leaders have additional management controls that ordinary members do not have.
These permissions are tied to faction membership and to whether a block or grid is shared with the faction. Joining does not mean every object in the world automatically changes ownership; access depends on the game’s faction-sharing state for the relevant blocks and grids.

Faction membership is useful when several players need to work on the same infrastructure. The official permissions description specifically covers access to owned blocks and grids that are shared with faction members.

For the player who owns the grid
- Complete the faction application and wait until leadership accepts you.
- Use the game’s ownership and sharing controls on the relevant ship, station, or base so the blocks or grid are shared with faction members.
- Tell your teammates which structure is available and whether any parts remain restricted.
For a faction teammate
- Confirm that your application has been accepted; a pending request does not provide member access.
- Try the specific shared blocks or grid the owner identified.
- If access is missing, ask the owner or a leader to check the sharing state for that object rather than assuming the faction membership failed.
The cited material establishes that faction-shared blocks and grids can be accessed by members, but it does not specify a universal ownership-menu sequence for every game version or platform. Labels and controls outside the Factions tab can therefore vary with the interface you are using.
Member and leader responsibilities
What a regular member can do
A member receives the documented ability to interact with faction-shared blocks and is not targeted by faction weapons. Those permissions support cooperative construction, maintenance, and defense without giving every member administrative control over the group.
What leaders and founders can do
Leadership carries the controls needed to run the group. Leaders can invite new members, confirm applicants, and kick existing members. A founder is also an authority who can accept a join request, according to the official wording.
What leadership does not guarantee
Leadership authority is separate from universal ownership of every player-built object. Sharing still has to be applied to the relevant blocks or grids, and the faction’s own rules determine who should receive access.
Create your own faction instead
If no existing group fits your goals, you can found one from the same interface.

- Press K to open the Terminal.
- Open the Factions tab.
- Make sure you have left any faction you currently belong to.
- Choose Create and complete the faction setup presented by the game.
The requirement to leave an existing faction applies to founding as well as joining. Once created, your group can use the faction system to organize members and make the available diplomatic declarations from the Factions screen.

The game does not provide a universal ranking of factions. The practical choice depends on the server, the group’s rules, and the level of trust you are comfortable granting. Use these questions when comparing two or more groups:

There is no evidence-based universal “best” faction. Compare these criteria against the rules of the specific server you play on.
Multiplayer and diplomacy context
Factions are designed for cooperative multiplayer organization rather than for a single-player progression requirement. The official multiplayer documentation describes players founding or joining factions and declaring war or peace from the Factions screen. That means the same menu handles both membership and the group’s broader diplomatic posture.
Because diplomatic choices are server- and group-dependent, confirm the faction’s expectations before bringing a personal ship or base into shared operations. A faction’s stance toward other groups can affect how safely those shared assets operate, even though the membership procedure itself remains K > Factions > select a group > Join.

- Open the Factions tab through K.
- Review the pending applicant and any information the player supplied in chat.
- Confirm the applicant when the group is ready to accept them.
- Explain which blocks, ships, or bases are shared with faction members.
- Use the leader controls to invite additional players or remove members when the group’s rules require it.
Accepting an application changes the player’s membership status, while access to a particular structure still depends on that structure being shared with the faction.
