BioShock does not have a documented co-op campaign. The official instructions available for the Steam version of BioShock 2 describe private multiplayer matches with friends instead. If you want to play that mode, the party leader selects Private Match, chooses a game type and map, then invites Steam friends from the player lobby using Invite Friends.
Can you play a BioShock campaign co-op?
The available official instructions do not document cooperative campaign progression in BioShock 2. They describe multiplayer, including private matches and invitations to friends. That distinction matters: a private match lets friends play a multiplayer game together; it is not a shared run through the story campaign.
Do not assume the same feature applies to the original BioShock, BioShock Infinite, or every release of BioShock 2. The instructions below are specific to the BioShock 2 Steam manual. The game’s Steam listing also includes multiplayer-related material, but neither source establishes that online services are currently available for every platform or edition.
How to invite friends to a BioShock 2 private match

- Open the multiplayer player lobby. The manual’s invitation instructions are for this lobby; they do not specify the exact menu path for reaching it in every release.
- Choose Private Match. The manual describes this option as play exclusively with friends. It is a private multiplayer match, not a co-op campaign.
- Have the party leader select the game type and map. The leader makes these choices for the match.
- In the player lobby, select Invite Friends. The documented option invites players from the Steam friends list. The manual’s wording is: “Invite players from your Steam friends’ list to the game.”
- Have invited players follow the invitation prompt they receive. The manual establishes the invite option but does not specify the recipient-side prompt or joining steps, which can depend on the current game and Steam interface.
If you are not seeing the same lobby or controls, first confirm that you and your friends are using the Steam version covered by the manual. The instructions do not establish equivalent steps for other platforms or editions.
What Private Match offers
The Steam manual lists seven game types and ten maps. Its retrieved excerpt does not state when the manual was published, so these figures should be understood as the manual’s documented offering, not as a guarantee about the current state of online play.

BioShock 2 multiplayer was part of the game’s historical development: in a May 8, 2009 announcement, 2K said multiplayer was being developed with Digital Extremes and described it as a substantial element of the game. That announcement is historical context, not confirmation that matchmaking or online services still work today.
