GTA Online multiplayer works across PC storefronts, but not between PC and console. A player using the Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or Xbox app on PC can play with other PC players. PlayStation and Xbox players can play with players on the same console family, but a PC player cannot join a PlayStation or Xbox session.
The most reliable setup is to make both players visible to Rockstar, put them in the same Crew if possible, and have one player start an Invite Only Session from Story Mode. The other player can then join through the Crew menu or the Rockstar friend list.

Before you try to join

Set Presence Visibility to Everyone on PC
If your friend appears offline or does not show up in GTA Online, check this setting on both PCs:
- Open GTA Online.
- Open the Rockstar Games menu.
- Select the Settings gear.
- Open Game Settings.
- Set Presence Visibility to Everyone.
Have both players change the setting before trying to join. This is Rockstar’s first recommended check when friends appear offline in GTA Online.

How to start an Invite Only Session
Rockstar’s current documented route starts in Story Mode. Do not assume that the same option is available from an already-loaded GTA Online session.
- Enter Story Mode.
- Open the Pause Menu.
- Select Online.
- Choose Find New Session.
- Select Invite Only Session.
- Confirm that you want to leave the current session.
GTA Online will load a private session. Other players cannot freely enter it as they could enter a public lobby; they must be invited or join you through an available friend or Crew option.
How to invite friends to your GTA Online session
Rockstar’s current support instructions do not give one universal, platform-wide menu path for sending a standard friend invitation from inside GTA Online. The exact friend and invite controls can vary by platform, edition, and whether the person is already connected to your Rockstar account.
For a dependable setup, make sure the players are connected as Rockstar friends or are members of the same Crew before starting the private session. Then:
- Start the Invite Only Session using the Story Mode route above.
- Ask your friend to use one of the joining methods in the next section.
- If an invite option is shown for the friend in your Rockstar Games menu, use it from there. If it is not shown, use the Crew member route instead.
In practice, the friend joining you is often more reliable than repeatedly searching for a separate “Invite Friends” screen. The important requirements are that the friend is visible and, for the direct Crew method, belongs to the same Crew.

How to join a friend on PC
Method 1: Join Crew Members
Use this when both players are members of the same Crew.
- Make sure both players have Presence Visibility set to Everyone.
- Open the Pause Menu.
- Select Online.
- Choose Join Crew Members.
- Select your friend’s available session, if it appears.
This method will not work simply because you are Rockstar friends. Rockstar specifies that both players must be in the same Crew.

Use this as the fallback when Join Crew Members does not work:
- Open the Pause Menu.
- Go to Online → Crews.
- Select My Crews.
- Open View Members.
- Select your friend.
- Choose Join Game.
Your friend must be visible in the member list and must already be in a session that you can join. If the session is Invite Only, you may need the host to invite you or make the session available through the relevant friend or Crew relationship.
Import friends from PlayStation, Xbox, or Google
If your friend exists on another supported platform account but is not appearing in your Rockstar friends list, import the contacts through Rockstar’s Import Friends page.

- Open Rockstar’s Import Friends page.
- Sign in to the Rockstar Games account used by GTA Online.
- Select the icon for Xbox network, PlayStation Network, or Google.
- Connect the relevant platform account when prompted.
- Follow the import instructions.
The Rockstar account must be linked to the applicable platform account before friends from that service can appear for import. Importing a friend does not remove the platform restrictions: a PC player still cannot join a console player’s GTA Online session.

Xbox app on PC: fix multiplayer and cross-network permissions
The Xbox app version of GTA Online can be blocked by Xbox privacy settings even when the game itself is installed correctly. In the Xbox app on PC:
- Select Profile & settings.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Account.
- Open Privacy Settings.
- Select MANAGE.
- Open Xbox and Windows 10 devices Online Safety.
- Set You can join multiplayer games to Allow.
- Set You can join cross-network play to Allow.
- Select Submit.
If the Xbox app player cannot access another player’s Crews or Jobs, Rockstar also lists these settings:
- You can join cross-network play: Allow
- You can communicate outside of Xbox with voice & text: Allow
- You can see and upload community creations: Everyone
The first setting enables play with other PC network versions. The communication setting affects voice and text outside Xbox, while the community-creations setting affects access to other players’ Crews and Jobs.

“Cross-network play” in Rockstar’s PC documentation means play between PC versions distributed through different PC services. It does not mean full PC-to-console crossplay.

Fixes for common joining problems
Friend shows as Offline
On both PCs, go to Rockstar Games menu → Settings gear → Game Settings → Presence Visibility and choose Everyone. Then return to GTA Online and try the join process again.
Join Crew Members does nothing
Confirm that both accounts belong to the same Crew. Being friends on Steam, Epic, Xbox, or Rockstar alone is not enough for this particular menu option.
Friend is missing from My Crews → View Members
Check that the friend is actually in one of your Crews, is visible to you, and has entered GTA Online. If the friend was imported from another service, verify that the correct Xbox, PlayStation, or Google account is linked to the Rockstar account.
Xbox app on PC cannot enter multiplayer
Set You can join multiplayer games to Allow in the Xbox privacy controls, then select Submit. Also check You can join cross-network play if the other player uses a different PC storefront.

Characters appear missing after entering an Invite Only Session on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S
Rockstar has documented a loading issue when launching directly into a Solo or Invite Only Session. Use one of these workarounds:

- Launch directly into a Freemode Session, allow the characters to load, and then enter an Invite Only Session.
- Start in Story Mode, use the Character Wheel, allow the GTA Online characters to load, and then enter the private session.
A fast setup that usually works
- Confirm both players are on compatible versions: PC with PC, or the same console family.
- On PC, set both accounts to Presence Visibility → Everyone.
- Put both players in the same Crew if you want to use Join Crew Members.
- Have the host enter Story Mode.
- Use Pause Menu → Online → Find New Session → Invite Only Session.
- Have the second player use Online → Join Crew Members.
- If that fails, use Online → Crews → My Crews → View Members → friend → Join Game.
FAQ
Can PC players join GTA Online with PlayStation or Xbox players?
No. GTA Online supports play between the PC versions from Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, Epic Games Launcher, and Xbox app on PC, but PC-to-console multiplayer is not supported.
Can I start an Invite Only Session from an existing GTA Online session?
Rockstar’s current documented route begins in Story Mode: Pause Menu → Online → Find New Session → Invite Only Session. The current support instructions do not document starting one directly from an already-loaded GTA Online session.
Do friends need to use the same PC storefront?

On PC, first set both players’ Rockstar Games menu → Settings gear → Game Settings → Presence Visibility to Everyone. If using Join Crew Members, also confirm that both players belong to the same Crew.
How do I add a PlayStation or Xbox friend to Rockstar Games?
Use https://socialclub.rockstargames.com/friends/import and select the relevant Xbox network, PlayStation Network, or Google icon. The applicable platform account must already be linked to the Rockstar Games account.
The Bottom Line
For the least troublesome route, use compatible platforms, set PC Presence Visibility to Everyone, place both players in the same Crew, and have the host create the private lobby from Story Mode through Pause Menu → Online → Find New Session → Invite Only Session. Join with Online → Join Crew Members; if that fails, use Online → Crews → My Crews → View Members → friend → Join Game. Do not expect PC-to-PlayStation or PC-to-Xbox crossplay.
