A large traffic total is a reason to investigate, not proof that a smart device is spying or sending personal data. To find out what it means, check which device generated the traffic, whether it was upload or download, the time period, what the device was doing, and which destinations it contacted. Encrypted traffic can often be measured without revealing its contents.
What the reported “gigabytes of mystery data” claim establishes
The specific first-person claim in the headline has not been independently verified here: the device models, measurement period, network setup, byte-counting method, and destinations behind it are not established. A separate article by Mohdbali, dated September 8, 2026, reported that six Wemo switches and plugs generated nearly 1.42 GB of traffic and more than 420,000 DNS requests during its described test. That is a secondary report, not a verified measurement record for the headline’s claim. A DNS request count is also not a data-volume measurement: it records requests to resolve domain names, not how many bytes a device sent or received.
These distinctions matter because a total does not reveal what the bytes contained or why they moved. A device may transfer data for updates, setup, cloud features, backups, streaming, or other functions. Without a reliable measurement method and evidence about the transfer’s contents or purpose, describe it as unexplained—not as spying, malware, or exfiltration.
What a traffic monitor can—and cannot—tell you
Volume, direction, and timing
Depending on the router or monitoring setup, you may be able to see per-device byte totals, upload and download amounts, connection times, contacted destinations, or DNS queries. These are different measurements. Confirm whether a displayed total covers one device or a group, whether it is upload, download, or both, and exactly how long it was counted.

Minute and hour data are retained in the cloud. 1 minute data is retained 7 days, 1 hour data is retained indefinitely. Export cloud data whenever you want in the app.
Timing and changes in traffic can help narrow down what to investigate. Compare an idle period with a period when the device is actively streaming, responding to voice commands, updating, or being set up. Compare like with like: a streaming box can reasonably use far more bandwidth than a switch. A single total without a defined interval and activity context is difficult to interpret.
Destinations are clues, not proof of purpose
A domain or IP address can show where a connection went, but identifying a destination’s operator does not establish what a particular transfer contained or why the device contacted it. A vendor-related domain, a packet’s size, or a DNS request count alone cannot prove that personal information was sent. Record the destination and the time of the connection, then check the device maker’s privacy and support documentation.

Encryption limits payload inspection
Encryption commonly prevents ordinary observers on the network from reading message contents. It does not necessarily hide that a device communicated, when it did so, how much traffic it generated, or which destination it contacted. RTINGS describes using Wireshark to observe destinations, timing, volume, and changes in behavior in its reported tests; encrypted payloads generally remained unreadable. That distinction is important: traffic metadata can reveal patterns without showing the contents of a message.

Dubois and colleagues’ 2019 study examined information exposure across networks, regions, and device interactions in 34,586 controlled experiments involving 81 consumer IoT devices in the United States and United Kingdom. Among the studied devices, 57.45% of destinations contacted by US devices and 50.27% for UK devices were classified as third-party or support destinations. The study also found that 56% of the US devices and 83.8% of the UK devices contacted destinations outside their region. Those figures describe the tested devices and study conditions, not all smart devices in homes today.

The same research topic has been explored at larger project scale: a 2022 USENIX project account reported 63,000 devices associated with more than 6,400 IoT Inspector users, with users inspecting about a third of those devices. That is a measure of project reach, not a representative count of households. The account records a practical user question: “What is this device on my network?”
There is also a documented historical example of viewing-data collection. The FTC’s account of its Vizio matter says that beginning in 2014, certain TVs automatically tracked viewing by matching selected pixels against a content database and sent information to company servers; the tracking included viewing from multiple inputs. This is a historical case, not evidence that every television—or every current model—behaves the same way.

How to investigate a device using more data than expected
- Identify the device and the measurement window. Note its make, model, firmware version, the router or monitoring tool, and the exact start and end times. Router menus vary, but look for connected-device, traffic, bandwidth, or usage views. Device names can be imprecise, so match an entry to the physical device before drawing conclusions.
- Separate the traffic measures. Check whether the figure is upload, download, or combined traffic; whether it is per device or network-wide; and whether it represents bytes or DNS requests. Record the amount and direction rather than relying on a single rounded total.
- Compare activity periods. Record whether the device was idle, streaming, responding to voice commands, updating, being configured, or recently reset. Compare repeated periods with similar activity. This helps distinguish a one-off event from a recurring pattern.
- Record destinations and timing. If your router or monitor exposes connection destinations or DNS queries, save the domain or IP, timestamp, byte direction and amount when available, and what the device was doing. A destination is evidence of contact, not an explanation of the transfer.
- Check the device maker’s documentation. Look for explanations of cloud features, telemetry, updates, remote access, and privacy settings. If the observed transfer remains unexplained, ask the manufacturer about the specific model, firmware, destination, and time period.
- Make network changes cautiously. If you test blocking a destination or moving a device to another network, change one thing at a time and note the result. Blocking can interrupt setup, updates, remote control, or safety functions. Keep a way to restore connectivity.
Know the blind spots in monitoring methods
Monitoring scope depends on the equipment and configuration. The IoT Inspector research implementation discovered devices through ARP scanning, then required the user to select devices for capture. It used ARP spoofing between a selected device and the router. Its described method monitored traffic between those devices and the router, but did not necessarily capture communication directly between two devices on the local network. The paper also discusses the additional network path and latency implications.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThat is methodological context, not a recommendation to intercept traffic without understanding network authorization and privacy. Before relying on any monitor, find out whether it shows per-device upload and download, destination or DNS information, how logs are retained and processed, and whether it sees local device-to-device traffic. A tool that misses a communication path cannot establish that no traffic occurred on that path.

Secure the network and limit unnecessary access
Start with router basics
The FTC’s consumer guidance treats the router as central to connected-device privacy. It recommends changing the default router administrator credentials and network name, enabling available Wi-Fi encryption, installing firmware updates, and reviewing connected devices. Use the router manufacturer’s instructions for its own interface, since menu names and update procedures differ.
Consider separating devices
For devices that do not need to communicate with your personal computers or phones, consider a guest network or other segmentation option supported by your router. The FTC’s business guidance recommends network segmentation and monitoring for unusually large data transfers. Segmentation can reduce exposure, but it does not explain every connection and may disrupt device features if applied indiscriminately.
Investigate unfamiliar entries before treating them as intruders
A connected-device list can contain labels that are incomplete or misleading. Check device details and compare them with the devices you own before removing access or changing passwords. If an entry remains unidentified, use the router’s documentation to determine what information its device list provides and how to disconnect a device safely.

Quick Recap
What makes a credible report of unexpected device traffic
- The device make and model, firmware, router or monitor, and measurement dates.
- Whether the reported figure is total traffic, upload, download, or a DNS-query count.
- A defined measurement window with repeated idle and active observations.
- Relevant activity during the test, such as streaming, setup, voice-assistant use, updates, or resets.
- Destination names and how they were identified, without treating a domain owner as proof of a transfer’s purpose.
- Known monitoring limits, including encryption and any local-network paths the setup may not capture.
