If a computer running CrowdStrike Falcon Sensor is slow or using more CPU, memory, or disk than expected, first measure the symptom and identify what changed. Compare the affected endpoint with a similar unaffected one, then check whether the issue follows a workload, operating system, sensor version, or policy. Avoid broad exclusions or disabling protection as a first response: the public CrowdStrike material cited here does not establish a universal performance fix or a standard performance threshold.
The repeatable approach is to preserve a baseline, collect host and sensor context using approved diagnostics, test a specific hypothesis safely, and escalate with redacted evidence when the cause remains unclear. The goal is not to prove that Falcon is responsible from a single observation; it is to narrow the possibilities without losing useful evidence or weakening protection unnecessarily.
What to record before changing anything
Start with the endpoint user’s observed problem, not an assumption that Falcon is the cause. A report of “the computer is slow” is not enough to distinguish high CPU from memory pressure, disk activity, application latency, or battery impact. Capture the original condition before changing a policy or sensor setting; otherwise, you may lose the evidence needed to compare before and after.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBuild a symptom record
- Host: Record an approved host identifier and its role or workload. Handle identifiers according to your organization’s data-handling rules.
- Platform: Note the operating system and exact release; include architecture and, for Linux, kernel details where available.
- Sensor: Record the installed Falcon Sensor version and the relevant update-policy assignment if available to your team.
- Symptom: Specify the resource or user impact: CPU, memory, disk activity, latency, battery impact, or a named application slowdown. Include the process or workload context if known.
- Timing: Record when the issue began, when it is observable, how long it lasts, and whether the endpoint was idle or doing specific work.
- Recent changes: Note sensor, operating-system or kernel updates; application releases; new workloads; policy changes; and other host-configuration or infrastructure changes near the onset.
- Comparison: Identify whether a similar endpoint with the same role and comparable workload shows the same behavior.
Use the same symptom and observation window when comparing machines. A busy endpoint cannot be meaningfully compared with an idle one just because both have Falcon installed. The available public documentation does not prescribe a profiler, a collection interval, or a numeric CPU or memory limit for declaring a Falcon performance problem. Use your organization’s approved monitoring tools and baseline practices, and describe what they measured rather than presenting an unsupported threshold as vendor guidance.

Make the symptom specific enough that another administrator could recognize it: for example, “application launch takes longer during a scheduled workload” is more useful than “the device feels slow.” If the report concerns high CPU or memory, retain the measurement, the time it was captured, and the process or workload context available to you. For intermittent behavior, note recurring times or events and whether the issue stops when the workload ends. These details help distinguish a persistent condition from a short-lived spike.
Compare affected and unaffected endpoints
A comparison helps narrow the scope before anyone changes security controls. Include more than one machine where practical, and look for a difference that tracks the symptom rather than merely a difference that happens to exist.
| Comparison | What it can help establish |
|---|---|
| Same role and workload, different outcome | Whether the issue appears limited to a host or group rather than being an obvious effect of that workload. |
| Same operating system and release, different sensor version or update assignment | Whether the symptom appears to follow a version or rollout boundary. This is a correlation to investigate, not proof of a sensor defect. |
| Same sensor version, different operating system or kernel | Whether the behavior is platform-specific. Configuration and controls can differ by operating system. |
| Before and after a recent workload, software, policy, or host change | Whether the timing supports a particular change as a hypothesis for a controlled investigation. |
Keep the comparison conditions visible in your notes: operating-system and kernel release, sensor version, workload, time window, and relevant recent changes. If several of these differ at once, the comparison may not isolate the cause. Do not treat a version correlation or a single before-and-after observation as confirmation without checking the surrounding workload and configuration.
When multiple endpoints are affected, group them by the factors that might explain the shared pattern: platform, exact OS or kernel release, sensor version, update assignment, workload, or policy. An issue on several machines after the same rollout deserves a different investigation from a problem isolated to one endpoint running a unique workload. Conversely, a shared version does not by itself establish a defect if affected and unaffected hosts differ in other important ways.
Keep observations comparable. Use the same type of measurement, a similar workload, and a similar time window when possible. If an exact match is not practical, write down the mismatch rather than implying the comparison is controlled. The public material cited here gives no benchmark, recommended threshold, or numeric performance figure with test conditions, so conclusions should rest on your recorded measurements and the environment-specific evidence.
Collect diagnostic context safely
CrowdStrike’s official Linux and Windows deployment scripts have documented debug modes that can report useful installer and environment details. They are deployment-troubleshooting aids, not CPU or memory profilers, performance traces, or proof that the sensor caused a slowdown. Use them only in the context appropriate to your deployment and follow organizational rules for running scripts and handling logs.

Operating-system and PowerShell versions, sensor query and installer choice, API call status, installed version, and AID. | Installer and environment context; the documentation says the version is resolved from policy or query rather than reread from the binary. |
See CrowdStrike’s [Linux install and uninstall script troubleshooting] and [Windows PowerShell install and uninstall script troubleshooting] for the documented modes and their output. The [deployment scripts overview] describes the script collection.
Before running a deployment script for diagnostic context, confirm it is suitable for your environment and that you have approval to run it. Follow the official instructions for the specific script and platform. The debug output can help establish which environment and installer details apply, but it should be kept separate from runtime measurements collected during the reported slowdown.
Protect sensitive diagnostic information
Review collected output before sharing it, and redact sensitive host details where needed under your organization’s rules. Use the documented redacted diagnostics rather than indiscriminate shell tracing. CrowdStrike’s Linux container-pull guidance warns that bash -x can print credentials and authorization headers; do not turn on command tracing casually while troubleshooting.
Do not infer a performance cause from installer output alone. For example, a reported sensor version or operating-system detail can help you compare affected hosts, but it does not show how much CPU or memory the sensor consumed during the reported slowdown. Preserve the original output securely, and share only what is necessary through approved channels.
Check timing, configuration, and deployment state
Once you have a baseline and host context, look for a plausible relationship between the onset and a change. Check sensor and operating-system updates, a new application or workload, a Falcon policy change, and host-configuration changes. The aim is to form a testable hypothesis—such as “this occurs only during this workload on this platform”—rather than to change settings until the symptom happens to move.

This keeps the investigation centered on observable differences rather than assumptions.

Confirm settings apply to this platform and release
Falcon configuration is not identical across operating systems. CrowdStrike’s Ansible falcon_configure documentation covers Linux and macOS, supports Windows with fewer options, and documents Linux-specific falconctl controls such as trace and message logging. The existence of a control does not mean it is enabled, appropriate for every platform, or a safe performance remedy. Verify its applicability and use against current Falcon documentation for the affected operating system and installed sensor release before making a change.
In particular, do not enable trace or message logging simply because a control exists in documentation. Confirm the purpose, scope, expected impact, and recommended handling for the exact platform and release in current authenticated guidance. A diagnostic setting should answer a defined question, be used only as long as needed, and be reviewed according to your organization’s change process.
Distinguish installation from configuration
For Linux and macOS deployments managed with CrowdStrike’s Ansible roles, installation by itself is not described as sufficient for a fully operational deployment. CrowdStrike’s falcon_install documentation directs administrators to run the configuration role after installation. This is worth checking when deployment appears incomplete or inconsistent; it is not evidence that incomplete configuration causes high CPU usage.

Compare configuration and deployment state between affected and unaffected hosts where you have permission and reliable records. If you identify a difference, confirm its meaning and the supported change procedure for the precise platform and sensor release before adjusting it. A setting documented for one operating system should not be assumed to exist or behave the same way on another.
Handle exclusions as security changes, not quick fixes
CrowdStrike documents multiple exclusion classes, including IOA, machine learning, sensor visibility, and certificate-based exclusions. Its exclusions documentation describes exclusion types and management operations; it does not establish exclusions as the default remedy for a performance complaint.
Do not disable protection or add a broad exclusion just to see whether the endpoint feels faster. An exclusion changes security coverage and can hide activity; a result from an uncontrolled change may also be difficult to interpret. If an exclusion test is approved by your organization and supported by current CrowdStrike guidance, document the specific cause being tested, the narrowest justified scope, who approved it, the rollback plan, and the same before-and-after measurement. Do not leave a temporary test in place without an explicit decision and review.

There is no general exclusion recommendation here because the appropriate type and scope depend on the demonstrated cause, current product guidance, and your organization’s risk decision. Treat each exclusion as a security-control change: record what it applies to, why it is needed, who approved it, how its effect will be measured, and when it will be removed or reviewed. Avoid making several policy changes at once; if the symptom changes, multiple simultaneous changes make it harder to identify why.
When to escalate and what to send
Use your organization’s CrowdStrike support channel and current authenticated Falcon documentation when local comparison does not isolate a workload or configuration cause, or when the evidence points to a possible product issue. Public materials cited here do not provide an authoritative performance escalation checklist, service-level commitment, or version-specific performance-issue matrix, so the information below is a practical evidence packet—not a claim about required vendor intake fields.
- State the problem precisely. Describe the affected resource or user-visible effect, when it occurs, how long it lasts, and the workload or process context. Include the measurement and observation window.
- Identify the environment. Include the platform and exact operating-system release, Linux kernel where relevant, architecture, Falcon Sensor version, and relevant update-policy assignment.
- Show the comparison. Provide results from comparable affected and unaffected endpoints, including how their workloads and observation windows match or differ.
- List changes near onset. Include sensor, operating-system, application, workload, policy, and host-configuration changes, with timing where known.
- Attach approved diagnostics. Include relevant redacted deployment-script output and other evidence your organization approves for sharing. Keep sensitive identifiers in approved secure channels.
- Describe what has already changed. Record any configuration or policy test, its scope, approval, rollback status, and measured result. This prevents a test change from being mistaken for the original condition.
Ask for guidance specific to the affected operating system and sensor release before applying a proposed configuration change. If the issue remains unexplained, preserve the original measurements and avoid stacking multiple changes that would make the cause harder to determine.
Give support a concise timeline: when the symptom first appeared, when it occurs now, and whether those times line up with a rollout or workload event. Include enough comparison detail to explain why you suspect a platform, release, policy, or workload relationship, but label a suspicion as a hypothesis. Send host identifiers and logs only through the secure channels your organization approves.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision path
- Symptom is vague: Define the resource or application impact, time window, workload, and user-observed effect before attributing it to Falcon.
- Only one endpoint is affected: Compare its workload, platform, sensor version, update assignment, and recent changes with a similar unaffected host.
- Several endpoints share a pattern: Check whether the common factor is platform, release, workload, policy, or a recent rollout. Keep correlation separate from confirmed cause.
- Deployment context is missing: If appropriate for your environment, use the official script’s documented debug mode and review its output safely. Do not mistake installer diagnostics for runtime profiling.
- A setting or exclusion is proposed: Confirm it applies to the exact operating system and sensor release, establish the cause it is meant to test, get the required approval, and define a narrow scope and rollback plan.
- No cause is isolated or a product issue is plausible: Escalate with the measured symptom, environment and comparison details, recent changes, and approved redacted diagnostics.
What vendor performance claims do—and do not—tell you
CrowdStrike’s product datasheet search result includes the sentence, “Minimal CPU overhead restores systemperformance and end-user productivity.” Treat this as vendor marketing language, not an independent test result or a guarantee for a particular endpoint. The result supplies no numeric performance figure or test conditions, and the concatenated wording should be checked against the underlying datasheet before direct publication. It does not replace measurements from the affected environment.
No named performance statistic with a figure, original publishing organization, year, and applicable test conditions is available here to support a numeric claim. Avoid repeating a benchmark or CPU threshold unless you can verify its source, conditions, and relevance to the exact platform and workload under investigation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is CrowdStrike Falcon using so much CPU?
A CPU increase alone does not identify the cause. Record when it occurs, what workload was active, the endpoint’s operating system and sensor version, and whether similar endpoints show the same pattern. Check whether the timing aligns with a sensor or OS update, application change, workload, policy, or host-configuration change. The public CrowdStrike material cited here does not establish one universal cause or fix.
How do I troubleshoot Falcon Sensor high CPU or memory usage?
Preserve the original measurement and observation window, identify the process or workload context where available, and compare the affected endpoint with a similar unaffected host under comparable conditions. Collect platform, kernel where relevant, sensor-version, update-policy, and recent-change details. CrowdStrike’s documented Linux and Windows script debug modes can add installer and environment context, but they are not CPU or memory profilers.
How can I fix CrowdStrike slowing down my computer?
First determine whether the complaint is CPU, memory, disk activity, latency, battery impact, or a particular application slowdown. Look for a repeatable relationship to workload, platform, sensor version, policy, or a recent change. Do not disable protection or add a broad exclusion as a first test. Confirm any proposed setting against current documentation for the exact operating system and sensor release, and escalate if the evidence does not isolate a cause.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I add an exclusion to fix a performance problem?
Not as a general-purpose first response. CrowdStrike documents IOA, machine-learning, sensor-visibility, and certificate-based exclusion types, but that does not establish exclusions as a default performance remedy. Consider a narrowly scoped test only when a cause is demonstrated, the change is approved by your organization, and current CrowdStrike guidance supports it. Record the measurement and rollback plan.
Do CrowdStrike’s install-script debug modes measure sensor performance?
No. The documented Linux mode, FALCON_DEBUG=1 ./falcon-linux-install.sh, and the Windows PowerShell -FalconDebug switch report deployment and environment context. They can help identify details such as OS, architecture or PowerShell version, installer selection, API outcomes, and sensor version, but they are not runtime CPU or memory traces.
What information should I send to CrowdStrike Support?
Use your organization’s approved support channel. Include the symptom and measurement with timestamps, operating system and release, Linux kernel and architecture where relevant, sensor version, update-policy context, affected-versus-unaffected comparison, recent changes, and approved redacted diagnostics. Describe any tests or configuration changes already made and their scope and results. Keep sensitive host details in approved secure channels.
The Bottom Line
There is no universal, publicly documented fix or numeric threshold for Falcon Sensor performance complaints. Measure the symptom, compare like-for-like endpoints, correlate it with workload, platform, version, policy, or recent changes, and use approved diagnostics for context—not as runtime profilers. Treat exclusions and configuration changes as controlled security changes, verify them for the exact platform and sensor release, and escalate with clear, redacted evidence when the cause remains uncertain.
