Treat an initial access broker (IAB) as a working hypothesis, not a finding you can prove from one unusual login. The safest response is a controlled sequence: appoint an incident lead, move sensitive coordination off potentially monitored channels, preserve short-retention and volatile evidence, trace identity and technical activity to define the blast radius, contain accounts and systems in an approved order, then verify that persistence and lateral access are gone before recovery.
What a suspected initial access broker intrusion actually means
An initial access broker is a criminal role: a person or group that obtains access to an organization and may sell or transfer that access to another operator. The label describes a possible position in the cybercrime ecosystem, not the identity of the intruder in your environment. A suspicious sign-in does not establish that access was bought, sold, or transferred.
Use the label only to guide questions. Keep alternative explanations open until evidence separates them:

- A vulnerable internet-facing or remote-access service
- Compromised supplier, contractor, or federation access
- Malware on an unmanaged or legacy endpoint
- Misconfiguration or an authorized administrator’s action
Microsoft’s reporting on access brokers and cloud intrusions describes legacy systems with weak endpoint monitoring and identity-led attacks as possible entry routes. It does not identify an actor in your case or establish that every intrusion follows the same path.

1. Establish incident control before making disruptive changes
The first objective is to make decisions deliberately while preserving the ability to investigate. Assign one incident lead and one person with authority to approve business-disruptive actions. Include identity, endpoint, cloud, network, legal, privacy, communications, and business owners as needed. Record the decision authority and an escalation contact for every critical service.
Create a protected incident channel
Assume that a compromised mailbox, collaboration tenant, or endpoint may be observable. When feasible, use an out-of-band channel such as a known-clean phone bridge or separately managed emergency communications system. Do not post containment plans in the account or workspace you are investigating. CISA’s ransomware guidance recommends coordinated isolation and out-of-band communications; the same principle is useful here, with the level of secrecy matched to the threat and business risk.
Start a decision log and timeline
Open a record with these fields before the first major action:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Detection time, source, and the exact alert or observation
- Time zone used for all timestamps
- Systems, identities, tenants, locations, and data potentially involved
- Person who made each decision, approval time, and business owner
- Evidence collected, collection method, collector, and storage location
- Actions taken, expected effect, observed effect, and any rollback plan
- Current confidence and the assumptions still being tested
Write facts separately from hypotheses. For example, “new authentication method added at 03:14 UTC” is a fact; “an IAB sold the account” is a hypothesis requiring evidence.

Check authority and obligations
Confirm who may disable identities, isolate production systems, seize equipment, contact customers, or notify regulators. Legal and privacy requirements may affect how employee, customer, health, financial, or controlled information is collected and shared. If your organization cannot perform the work safely, bring in an incident-response or digital-forensics team early rather than improvising destructive collection.
2. Preserve evidence before containment when it is safe to do so
Containment can destroy the very evidence needed to identify the entry path. CISA warns that memory and Windows Security logs, among other sources, may be volatile or retained only briefly. Export what is likely to expire before changing credentials, rebooting hosts, or deleting accounts, provided that delay does not allow active harm to continue.
Prioritize short-retention and volatile sources
- Identity-provider sign-in, risk, audit, and conditional-access events
- Authentication-method registrations, MFA changes, password resets, and recovery changes
- Active sessions, refresh-token records, application-consent events, and token-use logs where available
- Endpoint detection alerts, process trees, memory captures, logged-on users, and network connections
- Windows Security logs and equivalent operating-system audit records
- VPN, remote-desktop, secure-shell, bastion, and other remote-access logs
- Email delivery, mailbox audit, forwarding rules, inbox rules, and collaboration audit trails
- Cloud control-plane, storage, database, and object-access logs
- Firewall, DNS, proxy, NetFlow, VPN, and egress records
- Alerts from security products, including the original alert metadata and query results
Collect without altering originals
Export native records where possible, retain the original export, and make analysis copies. Record the collector, tool or console used, query or filter, time range, tenant or host, and time zone. Restrict access to the evidence store and keep an audit trail of every transfer. For forensic images and other large acquisitions, record an integrity value using the organization’s current approved method and document how it was calculated. Do not rely on a screenshot when a native, machine-readable export is available.

Cloud evidence can be spread across identity, management, storage, mail, collaboration, and application services. Preserve relevant audit exports and, where supported, snapshots of affected volumes for later examination. A cloud account may have no traditional disk image, so the absence of a physical drive does not mean the absence of evidence. Retention varies by service and license; verify the actual retention window instead of assuming that an event can be recovered later.

Understand what a write blocker can and cannot do
A hardware write blocker can help prevent a forensic workstation from writing to original physical storage media during imaging. NIST SP 800-86 (published in 2006) explains that purpose but also stresses the need for sound acquisition procedures. A write blocker does not preserve cloud audit records, stop an attacker, isolate an endpoint, or replace validated imaging and chain-of-custody procedures. Check the device’s supported interfaces and media types and test the complete acquisition workflow before relying on it. Use current organizational and legal requirements for integrity methods rather than treating every recommendation in an older guide as current.
3. Scope the intrusion across identity and technical layers
Build a time-ordered account from the first reliable event through the latest suspicious activity. Every finding should be tied to a time, identity, device or service, source address or location when available, action, and confidence level. Microsoft’s compromised-identity procedure calls this finding the likely entry point and blast radius; in practice, no single console will provide the whole answer.
Identity provider and directory
- List sign-ins from unfamiliar countries, autonomous systems, devices, user agents, or impossible travel patterns, while allowing for VPNs and mobile networks that can create misleading locations.
- Review failed and successful authentication, risk detections, password resets, MFA enrollment, new authentication methods, recovery-email or phone changes, and policy exceptions.
- Identify active sessions, refresh tokens, delegated permissions, newly registered applications, service principals, API keys, and consent grants.
- Check new users, group membership, role assignments, privileged elevation, directory synchronization changes, and federation or trust modifications.
- Separate human accounts from service principals, automation identities, emergency or break-glass accounts, and high-sensitivity administrators.
Email, files, and collaboration
Search mailbox audit data for forwarding, inbox rules, delegate access, unusual searches, mass reads, downloads, and outbound messages. Review file and collaboration access for new sharing links, permission changes, bulk reads, archive creation, and access from identities or devices not normally associated with the user. An intruder may use legitimate cloud management features, so an action can be malicious even when no malware appears on an endpoint.

Remote access, network, and cloud control plane
Review VPN and remote-desktop authentication, bastion and jump-host activity, firewall and proxy connections, DNS lookups, unusual egress, and lateral connections between hosts. In cloud environments, correlate identity events with management-plane operations, storage and database access, virtual-machine changes, secrets retrieval, and network-rule changes. Microsoft’s analysis of one observed cloud intrusion pattern follows signals across identity, Graph, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Exchange; use that as an example of cross-service correlation, not a universal playbook.
Use a blast-radius register
Maintain a table for each potentially affected object:
| Object | Evidence to record | Decision state |
|---|---|---|
| User account | Sign-ins, methods, sessions, roles, mail and file access | Unconfirmed, suspected, confirmed, or cleared |
| Service identity | Owners, applications, secrets, jobs, scope, recent use | Owner review required before rotation or disablement |
| Endpoint or server | Logged-on identities, processes, persistence, connections, telemetry gaps | Monitor, isolate, or forensically acquire |
| Cloud resource | Control-plane changes, data access, sharing, network and secret changes | Review owner and dependency impact |
| Third party or remote-access path | Provider account, trust, source systems, sessions, approvals | Validate with the service owner |
4. Choose containment actions by risk, not by habit
For every proposed action, compare five factors: how quickly it stops active access, what evidence it may destroy, operational impact, the chance that the actor will observe and change tactics, and whether the target is a service, emergency, or high-sensitivity identity. The fastest action is not always the safest action, and a quiet evidence-preserving step may be preferable when active harm is not occurring.
| Action | Stops access quickly | Evidence or visibility risk | Operational considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revoke sessions and refresh tokens | Usually high for current web and API sessions | May remove useful live-session evidence; export first | Confirm platform coverage and expected reauthentication |
| Disable or restrict a user | High for interactive sign-in | Can obscure the actor’s next move and interrupt collection | Validate account sensitivity, ownership, and business dependencies |
| Remove unauthorized authentication methods | High for the altered method | Record the method, timestamps, and audit event before removal | Ensure a legitimate recovery method remains |
| Rotate passwords, keys, and secrets | High for the rotated credential | May break scheduled jobs or erase proof of use | Inventory consumers and coordinate with service owners |
| Isolate an endpoint or server | High for network-based movement | Network isolation usually preserves memory better than powering off | Assess safety, redundancy, and production impact |
| Block an address or domain | Variable; attackers can change infrastructure | Can remove a useful network indicator | Use as a layer, not as the sole containment measure |
5. Contain compromised identities in a controlled sequence
- Validate the identity. Determine whether it is a human user, service principal, automation account, emergency account, or privileged administrator. Identify the owner and dependent applications.
- Preserve identity evidence. Export sign-ins, risk events, authentication-method changes, session information, role changes, consent records, and relevant mail or file audit data.
- Stop current sessions. Revoke active sessions and refresh tokens where the platform supports it. Confirm which token types and federated sessions are actually covered.
- Remove unauthorized access methods. Delete unapproved MFA devices, passkeys, recovery methods, application consents, keys, or certificates after recording their details.
- Restrict or disable sign-in. Apply the least disruptive control that stops the confirmed path. For a high-sensitivity, service, or break-glass identity, obtain the designated owner’s and incident lead’s approval first.
- Rotate credentials and secrets. Change passwords, API keys, certificates, and other exposed secrets, then update every legitimate consumer and automation job.
- Review privilege. Remove unauthorized role assignments and temporary elevation, and check whether the identity created additional accounts, applications, or credentials.
- Re-test from a known-clean device. Verify that legitimate administrators can recover access through approved methods and that the suspected path no longer works.
A password reset alone is not proof of containment. Existing sessions, refresh tokens, application credentials, delegated permissions, federation, or a second persistence mechanism may remain.

6. Isolate affected hosts and services without destroying evidence
Use endpoint isolation controls when available, preserving the host for investigation. If network disconnection can stop movement, it is generally preferable to powering down because shutdown can destroy volatile memory and live connection evidence. Safety and operational requirements come first: a dangerous industrial process or a critical medical system may require a specialized isolation plan.
Before isolation, if the situation permits, capture the host’s current user, time, network addresses, logged-on sessions, running processes, open connections, and relevant alert identifiers. Do not run cleanup utilities, delete malware, or reboot merely to make a machine appear normal. Preserve the state, label the system, and hand it to personnel trained in the organization’s acquisition procedure.
For cloud services, containment may mean disabling a workload identity, removing a public endpoint, restricting a security-group rule, suspending a compromised integration, or placing a storage resource under a protective policy. Map dependencies first so that a containment change does not silently disable logging, backups, safety controls, or identity recovery.
7. Reduce the chance of tipping off the intruder
Do not promise that containment can be invisible. An actor may notice a revoked session, a blocked connection, or a changed password. The practical goal is coordinated action that prevents uncontrolled lateral movement while preserving evidence and business safety.
- Plan high-impact changes in the protected incident channel and execute related actions close together.
- Use staged restrictions when immediate shutdown is not required, while watching for new sign-ins, token use, privilege changes, or data access.
- Do not confront a suspected insider or announce investigative details before legal and security leadership agree on the plan.
- Keep monitoring after the first action; a reaction can reveal additional accounts, infrastructure, or persistence.
- Document why a quiet or immediate action was chosen, including the harm being prevented and the evidence trade-off.
8. Verify persistence, eradicate, and recover
Containment means access is blocked for now. Eradication requires evidence that the entry path and persistence mechanisms are removed. Re-review telemetry after each major action and compare it with the original timeline.
Verify identity persistence
- No unauthorized authentication methods, recovery changes, sessions, refresh tokens, application keys, certificates, or delegated permissions remain.
- No unexpected users, groups, roles, service principals, applications, federation changes, or privileged assignments were added.
- All affected secrets were rotated and their legitimate consumers were updated.
Verify technical persistence and movement
- Endpoints and servers have been checked for scheduled tasks, services, startup items, remote tools, local accounts, scripts, and security-control tampering.
- Remote-access paths, VPN accounts, jump hosts, firewall rules, and cloud network changes match approved configuration.
- Searches for lateral movement, unusual data access, archives, staging locations, and egress show no unexplained continuation.
- Logging and alerting are functioning for the identities, hosts, cloud services, and networks involved.
Recover under the approved plan
Restore from known-good sources only after the original entry route is closed and required evidence is preserved. Keep privileged access tightly controlled, require strong approved authentication, and monitor restored systems for recurrence. There is no single recovery sequence that fits every directory, identity provider, SaaS platform, or cloud environment; follow the organization’s tested recovery plan and record deviations.
9. Escalate when internal capacity is insufficient
Specialist incident responders or digital-forensics practitioners can help with memory capture, cloud evidence preservation, malware analysis, legal-hold processes, and complex scoping. Engage them before wiping or rebuilding systems if those systems may contain decisive evidence. CISA provides government response channels for ransomware incidents, and NIST describes incident-response and forensic-support resources; eligibility and reporting duties depend on the organization and jurisdiction.

Quick Recap
Common mistakes that weaken an investigation
- Resetting every password immediately: this may interrupt active access, but it can also break service dependencies and discard useful token and session evidence. Export first when safe.
- Powering off every host: shutdown can destroy volatile evidence. Isolate through the network or endpoint control when that is safe and effective.
- Assuming no malware means no intrusion: cloud administration, valid credentials, and stolen sessions can produce little or no endpoint malware signal.
- Ignoring service and emergency accounts: non-human and break-glass identities can have broad access and must be validated with their owners before disabling them.
- Investigating only the first alert: an IAB hypothesis requires checking identity, email, cloud, endpoint, remote-access, and network layers together.
- Using a write blocker as a complete forensic solution: it protects original physical media from writes; it does not handle cloud evidence, volatile capture, isolation, or chain of custody by itself.
- Communicating in a compromised workspace: an observed plan can trigger faster lateral movement or destruction. Use an out-of-band channel when feasible.
Operational completion checklist
- Incident lead, decision authority, protected communications, and timeline are established.
- Short-retention logs, alerts, volatile evidence, and cloud snapshots have been preserved where feasible.
- Identity, email, collaboration, endpoint, remote-access, network, and cloud evidence have been correlated.
- Each affected account, service, host, and cloud resource has an owner, confidence state, and action decision.
- Sessions and tokens were revoked where supported; unauthorized methods, roles, consents, and secrets were removed or rotated.
- Affected hosts and services were isolated in a way that balances safety, evidence, and availability.
- Persistence, lateral movement, data access, and the original entry path were rechecked after containment.
- Recovery used known-good sources under an approved plan, with heightened monitoring and documented exceptions.
