Start by confirming who actually billed the requests—Anthropic’s direct Claude API, Claude Platform on AWS, Amazon Bedrock, or another provider. Then isolate the first increase in the provider’s usage records, attribute it to API key, workspace, model, service tier and context window, and reconcile token and feature charges with the prices that applied during the invoice period. Finally, compare that timeline with deployments, retries, background jobs, prompt changes and credential activity. An invoice alone cannot identify the cause; you need the usage report and application logs.

1. Confirm the billing route and invoice period

Before investigating token counts, establish which service generated the charge and the exact dates covered by the bill. A direct Anthropic API account, Claude Platform on AWS, Amazon Bedrock and a different cloud or marketplace integration can expose different usage views, apply different prices and place charges on different invoices.

Match the charge to the provider

  • Direct Claude API: Use the Anthropic Console and, where available, the organization’s Admin API usage report. The Console and Admin API describe Anthropic-side usage for the direct account.
  • Amazon Bedrock: Treat the AWS account as the billing system of record. Bedrock requests are integrated into AWS billing and logging, so a direct Anthropic Console view should not be assumed to contain every charge made through Bedrock.
  • Claude Platform on AWS or another partner: Use that platform’s invoice, usage export and activity logs. Provider names that sound similar do not guarantee that their usage reports or price schedules are interchangeable.

Record the invoice number, billing start and end timestamps, currency, account or AWS payer, and any credits, adjustments or taxes shown. Keep the time zone. A one-hour offset can make a usage spike appear to start before or after the deployment that caused it.

Make a one-page incident record

Create a working record before changing the application. Include the invoice period, billed provider, affected account or workspace, first date the total diverged from normal, and the people responsible for the relevant keys. Preserve the original invoice and unmodified exports so later calculations can be reproduced.

2. Find the first increase in usage

Export the Console Usage report

For direct Claude API usage, open the Anthropic Console’s Usage view and export the report. Anthropic’s model-lifecycle documentation identifies this export as a way to audit usage by API key and model. Start with a broad date range covering the invoice, then narrow it to the first day and hour in which usage departs from the baseline.

Do not begin by looking only at the grand total. Sort or pivot the export by API key, model and date. The earliest change often distinguishes a sudden traffic increase from a model migration or a price-tier change. Keep the exported file with its generation date and the selected time zone.

Use the Admin API Messages usage report for attribution

When the account has access to Anthropic’s Admin API, the Messages usage report provides finer-grained attribution. It supports filtering and grouping by:

  • API key
  • Workspace
  • Model
  • Service tier
  • Context window

It can return minute, hourly or daily buckets. Use a narrow window around the first unexpected increase rather than requesting an entire year of data. The documented maximum history per request depends on the bucket:

Bucket Maximum history per request Best use
Minute Up to 1,440 minutes Pinpointing the start of a burst, retry loop or runaway job
Hourly Up to 168 hours Comparing a deployment day or weekly workload pattern
Daily Up to 31 days Reconciling a monthly invoice or finding a multi-day trend

Paginate through the results. A report that stops at the first page can understate the actual period. Save the request parameters, bucket size, filters and every page of the response with the invoice record.

Separate volume from price

For each key and model, calculate at least four columns: request count, input tokens, output tokens and total billed amount. Add cache-write tokens, cache-read tokens, tool-related usage and service-tier or long-context indicators when the report exposes them. This separates “more work happened” from “the same work became more expensive.”

3. Reconcile the bill with the applicable pricing

Use the pricing schedule that applied during the invoice period, not a remembered rate or a current example. Model prices, lifecycle status and feature terms can change. The usage report is an attribution aid; it is not a substitute for the actual invoice, which may include platform-specific adjustments or credits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check every cost component

Component What to inspect Why it can change the total
Input tokens Prompt text, conversation history, retrieved documents and system instructions Larger context or repeated history raises billed input even when request count is unchanged.
Output tokens Generated response length and maximum-token settings Longer answers, verbose structured output or a changed stop condition increase output usage.
Prompt-cache writes Tokens written to the cache Cache writes have a separate rate from ordinary input tokens.
Prompt-cache reads Tokens served from the cache Cache reads have their own rate; a caching change can alter the mix of charges without changing visible prompts.
Batch processing Whether requests used a batch feature Batch workloads can have different applicable rates and accounting behavior.
Service tier Standard or another selected service tier The tier can change the unit price for otherwise similar token usage.
Long-context pricing Total input against the model’s documented threshold Eligible models may apply long-context pricing after the specified threshold is crossed.
Server-side tools Tool calls, tool definitions and returned results Some tools have separate usage-based charges, and the definitions and results can also add input tokens.

Recalculate each row using the model, region or platform and feature terms in force on the relevant date. Do not infer a price increase merely because a model was deprecated. Deprecation can leave an old model running at its previous rate, move traffic to another model, or coincide with an application change; only the usage and pricing records establish what happened.

Look for long-context and tool effects

A request can become expensive without any increase in request count. A larger retrieval result, an untrimmed conversation, a new system prompt or tool output may push input over a long-context threshold. Tool definitions are sent as part of the request, and returned tool results can be included in subsequent context. If a server-side tool has its own usage charge, reconcile that line separately from model tokens.

4. Compare the spike with application activity

Once the usage report shows exactly when and where the increase occurred, line it up with application evidence. Export request logs, deployment records, queue metrics, scheduler histories and feature-flag changes for the same timestamps. The goal is correlation, not guesswork.

Check request volume

  • Compare requests per minute or hour before and during the spike.
  • Look for a new customer, tenant, batch import or public endpoint that multiplied traffic.
  • Check whether a background worker, cron job or queue consumer ran more frequently than intended.
  • Confirm that a health check, preview route or test environment is not calling the production key.

Check prompt and context growth

  • Diff the prompt template and system instructions deployed immediately before the increase.
  • Measure the number of messages, retrieved documents and serialized tool definitions per request.
  • Check whether conversation history is being appended repeatedly instead of truncated or summarized.
  • Verify that a failed parser is not sending the same large document again and again.

Check retries and loops

Inspect retry middleware for exponential backoff, maximum-attempt settings and idempotency behavior. A timeout after the provider accepted a request can cause the client to submit it again. A tool-calling loop can repeatedly invoke the model when a tool result never satisfies the stopping condition. Count attempts, not just successful application responses, and compare request IDs where your logs retain them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that an HTTP error means no charge occurred. A client may retry a request after a timeout or connection reset, and each accepted attempt can contribute usage. Conversely, an error code by itself does not explain the invoice total; it only describes the service-access event.

Check model, tier and feature changes

Search deployment and configuration history for model-name changes, service-tier settings, batch enablement, prompt caching, long-context options and server-side tools. A model switch can alter the unit price while traffic remains flat. A feature flag may affect only one workspace or API key, which is why the report’s attribution fields matter.

5. Investigate API-key ownership and possible misuse

If one key or workspace accounts for an unexpected share, identify its owner, creation date, last rotation and allowed environments. Compare the key’s normal source IPs, user agent, service account and deployment to the requests in the spike. Look for a key copied into a client-side bundle, public repository, notebook, support ticket or CI log.

Contain first, then preserve evidence

  1. Disable or rotate a key when unauthorized use is plausible, following your organization’s change procedure.
  2. Issue a replacement with the narrowest workspace and environment access that the application needs.
  3. Preserve the old key’s usage export, request timestamps, request IDs and access logs before deleting related records.
  4. Review other keys in the same workspace for simultaneous activity.
  5. Record the exact containment time so responders can distinguish provider usage before and after the rotation.

A suspicious key is a hypothesis until the provider’s usage dimensions and your access logs agree. A legitimate batch job can look anomalous if it ran outside its usual schedule; an exposed key can look normal if an attacker copied the application’s request pattern.

6. Interpret errors without confusing them with charges

Anthropic documents several status codes that help explain why requests stopped or retried:

Status Documented meaning Investigation use
400 A configured organization or workspace spending limit was reached. Check configured limits and the time they were applied; this does not calculate the invoice total.
402 A billing or payment issue. Review payment status and billing records; do not treat the code as proof of a usage amount.
429 A rate limit or certain spending cap was reached. Compare the response rate with retry behavior and configured limits.

Each API response includes a unique request ID. Preserve that identifier in application logs and include it when asking support about a specific request. A request ID lets support locate an event; it does not replace the invoice, usage export or your own deployment timeline.

7. Account for model lifecycle changes

Export usage by model and API key, then compare the dates with the model’s lifecycle notices. Continued calls to a deprecated model may indicate that a configuration was never updated, while an automatic or manual migration may send traffic to a different model. Compare actual token volumes and the applicable prices before concluding that lifecycle status caused the bill.

Check all environments, not just production. A forgotten staging worker can continue using an old model after production has migrated. Also verify that aliases or configuration variables resolve to the model name you think they do; record the resolved model in request logs where possible.

8. Special procedure for Amazon Bedrock usage

For Bedrock requests, reconcile the AWS side as well as Anthropic’s model-level information. Start with the AWS billing period, account or payer, region and service line. Then compare AWS Cost and Usage data, CloudTrail or application logs, and the workload’s request metrics. Do not assume a direct Anthropic Console export contains every Bedrock charge.

Keep a rolling activity log

Anthropic recommends retaining at least a 30-day rolling activity log for Bedrock so operators can understand activity and investigate possible misuse. Retain request timestamps, account and region, workload identity, model, token or usage fields available to your integration, response status and request identifiers. Apply your organization’s privacy and retention rules, but keep enough history to cover a full invoice dispute.

Reconcile AWS and application records

  1. Identify the AWS account, region and payer that received the charge.
  2. Group AWS cost and usage records by service, operation, region and time bucket.
  3. Match those buckets to application request counts, models and workload identities.
  4. Investigate differences caused by delayed billing data, credits, taxes or platform adjustments.
  5. Use the combined records when contacting AWS or Anthropic, depending on which part of the charge is in dispute.

9. Build a defensible incident timeline

A timeline turns a large bill into testable questions. Use UTC or clearly label the chosen time zone and include:

  • First normal and first abnormal usage bucket
  • API key, workspace and model responsible for each material change
  • Deployments, configuration edits, feature-flag changes and scheduled jobs
  • Retry, timeout, rate-limit and spending-limit events
  • Key rotation or access revocation times
  • Invoice line items, credits and provider adjustments

For each suspected cause, write the confirming record and the record that would disprove it. For example, a retry-loop theory should predict higher attempt counts and matching client errors; a model-price theory should predict stable token volume but a different model or tier; a compromised-key theory should predict activity from an unrecognized owner, environment or source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Prevent the next surprise bill

Set operational guardrails

  • Assign every key to an owner, workspace and environment.
  • Keep production keys out of browsers, mobile binaries, public repositories and shared notebooks.
  • Log model, service tier, token counts, retry attempt and request ID for each call, subject to privacy controls.
  • Alert on request volume, input-token growth, output-token growth and spend by key or workspace—not only on the monthly total.
  • Put maximum attempts and total elapsed time on every retry policy.
  • Bound retrieved context, conversation history, tool definitions and tool-result size.
  • Review scheduled jobs and test environments after every deployment.

Review usage on a fixed cadence

Use daily buckets for a monthly reconciliation and hourly or minute buckets during an incident. Compare the current model and feature mix with the previous period, then retain the export and calculation used to explain material variances. For Bedrock, maintain the recommended 30-day rolling activity log and reconcile it with AWS billing records.

What a complete explanation should contain

A credible incident conclusion names the billing route, invoice dates, first abnormal timestamp, affected key or workspace, model and service tier, token and feature quantities, applicable prices, and the application or access event that matches the timing. It should also state any unresolved difference between the provider’s usage report and invoice, and identify the request IDs supplied to support. If those records do not agree, report the discrepancy rather than attributing the bill to retries, caching, a model change or misuse without evidence.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
