An AI-generated cloud security finding is a hypothesis, not proof that activity is malicious or harmless. Investigate it by preserving the alert, checking the underlying event in raw logs, correlating identity and workload context, asking the resource owner to confirm authorization, and testing every claim in the AI explanation. Only then classify the finding as a malicious true positive, a benign true positive, or a false positive.
Microsoft specifically instructs analysts to review AI-generated findings for accuracy before remediation decisions or stakeholder communications. That human review is essential because a model can misread normal automation, unusual but authorized testing, incomplete telemetry, or events from a different resource as an attack.
What a false positive is—and what it is not
Security teams often use “false positive” loosely. Precise classification prevents the wrong response and makes later tuning safer.
| Classification | What happened | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Malicious true positive | The detected activity occurred and was unauthorized or harmful. | Escalate through incident-response procedures, contain the activity, preserve evidence, and investigate scope. |
| Benign true positive | The suspicious activity occurred, but it was authorized—for example, a scheduled penetration test, migration, or administrator action. | Record the authorization and test/change reference. Do not erase the event simply because it was approved. |
| False positive | The activity was nonmalicious, or the detector incorrectly attributed or interpreted it. | Document the evidence, close the finding, and consider narrowly scoped tuning only after validating the cause. |
| Undetermined | Evidence is incomplete, contradictory, or unavailable. | Keep the case open or escalate for additional telemetry instead of forcing a benign classification. |
A model-generated label does not establish any of these outcomes. It is an interpretation of the data available to the product at that moment. Your conclusion must be based on source events, environment context, and authorization records.

Start by preserving the finding and defining its scope
Do not close, suppress, or edit an alert before capturing the original evidence. AI explanations can change as data is reprocessed, and a closure action may remove useful context from the analyst view.
Capture an investigation record
- Finding or alert identifier and the product that generated it.
- Creation and detection timestamps, including the time zone and any event-time versus ingestion-time distinction.
- Cloud account, subscription, project, tenant, region, and environment (production, staging, development, or test).
- Affected resource identifier, resource type, and owner.
- Principal involved: user, role, service account, workload identity, or provider-managed identity.
- Severity, tactics or techniques assigned by the detector, and the complete AI-generated explanation.
- Links or identifiers for the raw events used by the detector, if the platform exposes them.
- Current status, assigned analyst, escalation path, and the next review time.
Use a stable case or ticket identifier so every query, screenshot, owner response, and decision can be traced to the same finding. Assign an owner immediately; unassigned “low” alerts commonly become stale while the underlying evidence expires.
Set a time window before querying
Begin with the detector’s event time and include enough lead-in and follow-up time to see authentication, deployment, and cleanup activity. A narrow query can make a legitimate sequence look isolated; an excessively broad query can mix unrelated operations. Record the exact start and end times used for each log query.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

The next question is not “Does the AI sound convincing?” It is “What raw event caused this finding, and can I independently confirm it?” Microsoft Defender for Cloud guidance recommends contacting the resource owner and investigating raw logs generated by the affected resource when checking a suspected false positive.
Inspect the source event
- Open the alert’s evidence or event reference and identify the original service that recorded the operation.
- Retrieve the raw record from that service, not only the normalized alert fields. Preserve the record in the case system or an immutable evidence location according to your retention policy.
- Check the event’s account, region, resource ID, principal, source address, user agent, operation name, result code, and request parameters.
- Compare the event timestamp with the alert timestamp. Note clock skew, batching, delayed ingestion, and duplicate records.
- Confirm that the operation was successful, failed, simulated, or merely attempted. A denied request is not equivalent to a completed change.
If no raw event exists, record that absence as an evidence limitation. Do not treat a missing record as proof that the activity was benign; determine whether logging was disabled, expired, filtered, delayed, or generated by a different service.

Ask the resource owner specific questions
Contact the person or team responsible for the workload with the exact principal, operation, resource, and time window. Ask whether the activity was expected, who authorized it, what change or deployment it belongs to, and whether the observed parameters match the approved work. A reply such as “that is probably our automation” is useful as a lead, but retain the change ticket, deployment record, test plan, or access approval that supports it.
Owner confirmation establishes business context; it does not replace technical verification. An owner may recognize a scheduled job while missing a compromised credential used to imitate that job.

Correlate logs across identity, resource, network, and workload layers
A single detector rarely contains enough context to establish criticality. Correlation shows whether the event fits a legitimate sequence and whether the same principal or resource performed related actions.
| Evidence source | Questions to answer | What a mismatch may indicate |
|---|---|---|
| Identity and access activity | Which identity authenticated? Was multifactor authentication used? Was a role assumed? Did the principal normally access this account, region, or service? | Credential theft, role confusion, an unexpected automation identity, or an incorrectly mapped principal. |
| Cloud control-plane audit logs | What API call occurred, with which parameters, from which source, and immediately before or after what other calls? | A detector may have grouped separate operations or attributed a read as a write. |
| Resource and configuration state | Did the resource actually change? Do current settings match the event? Was the resource recreated or renamed? | Stale identifiers, drift, a benign failed attempt, or activity on a different object. |
| Network telemetry | Was there a corresponding connection, DNS query, flow, or security-group change? Is the source address expected for the workload? | Shared egress, NAT, proxies, scanners, or a source address that cannot identify a user by itself. |
| Service and application logs | Did the application receive and process the request? What did it return? Do application IDs match the cloud event? | Health checks, retries, test traffic, or a control-plane event that never reached the application. |
| Change, deployment, and test records | Was there an approved release, migration, backup, restore, or penetration test at that time? | A benign true positive rather than a false positive, or an unauthorized action hidden inside legitimate work. |
AWS guidance identifies CloudTrail, VPC Flow Logs, Route 53 Resolver logs, infrastructure logs, and application logs as useful sources for correlation and enrichment. Equivalent sources exist under other providers, but names, retention, and fields vary. Query the systems that actually recorded the affected workload rather than assuming every provider exposes identical telemetry.
Build a timeline
Place authentication, role assumption, resource access, configuration changes, network connections, application requests, and cleanup actions on one timeline. Mark which entries are directly observed and which are inferred by the AI. A sequence such as approved deployment, service-account authentication, configuration update, and expected health checks supports a benign explanation. An unexplained login followed by privilege changes and data access warrants escalation even if one individual event resembles routine automation.

| AI claim | Verification | Record |
|---|---|---|
| “Principal X accessed resource Y.” | Match the raw identity and resource fields, including account or tenant and region. | Event IDs, exact fields, and any conflicting records. |
| “The activity occurred at time T.” | Compare event time, ingestion time, and time-zone conversion. | Original timestamps and query window. |
| “This behavior is unusual.” | Compare with the principal’s historical activity, scheduled jobs, deployment calendars, and peer workloads. | Baseline method and exceptions; do not claim a statistical anomaly without a measured baseline. |
| “The operation changed configuration or enabled access.” | Check before-and-after resource state and the operation’s result code. | Configuration snapshots and success or failure status. |
| “The source is malicious or external.” | Correlate address ownership, proxies, NAT, workload topology, and threat intelligence approved by your process. | Source attribution and uncertainty. |
For every assertion, mark it as supported, contradicted, partially supported, or not testable. Note missing telemetry explicitly. If the explanation combines events from different resources, principals, or time windows, that is a material defect even when each individual event is real.
Microsoft’s Attack Investigation Agent documentation states that its output is AI-generated and grounded in data available through Defender APIs, and instructs users to review findings for accuracy before making remediation decisions or communicating them to stakeholders. Treat that warning as an operational control: no irreversible remediation or stakeholder statement should rely solely on generated reasoning.
Determine whether the behavior was expected and authorized
“Unusual” is not the same as “unauthorized.” Cloud environments contain scheduled scaling, backup, disaster-recovery drills, infrastructure-as-code runs, one-time migrations, vendor maintenance, and security testing. Conversely, attackers often hide inside legitimate tools and identities.
Validate the business context
- Ask the owner to identify the workload function and normal operating pattern.
- Check deployment calendars, maintenance windows, change tickets, incident records, and test plans.
- Confirm that the named person or service was authorized for the specific account, region, resource, and time.
- Compare parameters: an approved test may target a staging endpoint, while the alert concerns production.
- Verify that the action ended as planned and did not expand into unrelated resources.
Store the owner’s identity, response time, exact confirmation, and supporting record. If the owner cannot be reached, do not silently classify the alert as false positive. Use the organization’s escalation path and preserve the unresolved status.

Classify the finding and choose a proportionate response
When evidence shows malicious activity
Escalate according to your incident-response plan. Preserve logs and volatile evidence, contain the affected identity or resource when authorized, assess lateral movement and data access, and notify the required stakeholders. The AI explanation may help prioritize investigation, but it does not define scope or replace your response procedure.
When activity is authorized but suspicious
Classify it as a benign true positive. Record the authorization, purpose, scope, and expiration of the activity. Keep the event visible for audit and detection-quality analysis. A recurring approved penetration test may justify a temporary, narrowly bounded exception, but a permanent broad suppression can conceal a real compromise.
When activity is nonmalicious or incorrectly interpreted
Classify it as a false positive only when the evidence explains why the alert was wrong: for example, the operation failed, the resource identity was stale, a shared proxy caused misleading attribution, or the behavior was a documented routine process. Close it through the platform’s workflow with the evidence and reasoning attached.
When evidence remains incomplete
Use an undetermined or equivalent state if your platform supports one. Request missing logs, extend the review window, involve the identity or workload team, and set a follow-up deadline. An uncertain closure produces less safety than a visible case with a clear evidence gap.

Prefer narrow, reversible controls
- Scope the exception to the exact resource, principal, operation, environment, or source condition that was validated.
- Set an expiration or review date, especially for tests, migrations, and temporary automation.
- Keep the original alert evidence and the reason for the exception.
- Test the rule against a known malicious-looking variation before enabling it broadly.
- Assign an owner for renewal and removal.
Do not tune away a pattern merely because an owner approved one instance. Separate the benign condition from adjacent behavior that should still alert.
What to look for when evaluating an AI-assisted security tool
Independent accuracy percentages, false-positive reduction rates, and vendor rankings are not established by the evidence available for this topic. Evaluate a tool by whether it lets analysts verify its conclusions.
| Capability | Questions for a technical evaluation |
|---|---|
| Raw log access | Can the tool retrieve or link to the underlying cloud, identity, network, service, and application records? What permissions and retention limits apply? |
| Context correlation | Does it join alerts with resource state, ownership, deployment activity, identity history, and environment metadata? |
| Inspectable explanations | Does each conclusion show the events, fields, timestamps, and assumptions behind it, rather than only a severity label? |
| Human review and owner confirmation | Can an analyst assign a case, request owner input, attach authorization, and require approval before closure or remediation? |
| Suppression and tuning controls | Can exceptions be limited, audited, tested, expired, and reverted? Is the original finding retained? |
AWS recommends automated correlation and enrichment as part of incident handling, while Microsoft’s guidance emphasizes human review of AI output and product-specific suppression. Those recommendations describe useful capabilities, not proof that any particular product is more accurate or less expensive.

AWS environments
AWS Security Incident Response guidance describes triage as routing findings to the right stakeholder, assessing and prioritizing them, and then remediating. In an AWS investigation, CloudTrail, VPC Flow Logs, Route 53 Resolver logs, infrastructure logs, and application logs may each answer a different part of the question. Confirm that the relevant trails, flow logs, regions, and accounts were enabled during the event; a cross-account role or centralized logging design can otherwise make a legitimate event appear ownerless.
Microsoft environments
Microsoft Defender for Cloud guidance recommends contacting the resource owner and examining raw logs generated by the attacked resource when assessing a suspected false positive. The Attack Investigation Agent is a Microsoft-specific capability with its own product prerequisites and API data boundaries; do not assume that its workflow or terminology applies to every cloud provider or security platform. Review its generated output before remediation or stakeholder communication.
Common investigation mistakes and their fixes
| Mistake | Why it fails | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Closing because the AI used the words “false positive.” | The label may reflect an inference, not verified activity. | Reclassify only after raw-log and owner checks. |
| Looking only at the alert dashboard. | Normalized fields can omit failed requests, retries, and resource changes. | Retrieve source records and preserve event IDs. |
| Relying on owner reassurance without evidence. | Compromised credentials can perform actions that look like approved automation. | Match the confirmation to change, deployment, or test records and technical fields. |
| Assuming a public or internal IP identifies a person. | NAT, proxies, shared runners, and scanners obscure attribution. | Correlate identity, network, workload, and authentication telemetry. |
| Suppressing an entire rule after one benign event. | Future malicious activity may share the same broad pattern. | Use a narrow, time-bounded, auditable exception. |
| Ignoring missing telemetry. | Absence of evidence can result from retention or configuration gaps. | Document the gap, restore coverage, and keep the classification conservative. |

Quick Recap
Final decision checklist
- Have you preserved the original alert, explanation, timestamps, scope, and owner?
- Did you retrieve and verify the raw event rather than relying on normalized fields?
- Did you compare identity, resource, network, service, application, and change evidence?
- Did you test every material claim in the AI explanation?
- Did the resource owner confirm the specific activity and authorization with supporting records?
- Have you separated malicious true positive, benign true positive, false positive, and undetermined outcomes?
- Is the response proportionate to the evidence and consistent with incident-response procedures?
- If you tuned or suppressed anything, is the control narrow, reversible, auditable, and time-bounded?
- Could another analyst understand the evidence, uncertainty, and rationale from the case record alone?
