For most UK beginners, the practical route is to open a stocks and shares ISA with an FCA-authorised investment platform, compare the platform’s complete charging schedule, and buy investments that match your time horizon and tolerance for loss. A diversified fund can spread company risk; individual shares require more research and can fall sharply. Before placing an order, understand ISA rules, dealing and custody charges, Stamp Duty, taxes outside an ISA, and the limited circumstances in which compensation is available if a firm fails.

This is educational information, not a personal recommendation. Your choice of account, platform and investment depends on your circumstances, objectives and capacity for loss.

1. Choose the account wrapper before choosing a broker

A broker or investment platform is the service that executes your orders and holds your investments. The account wrapper determines how your returns are taxed. Compare wrappers first; otherwise a low dealing fee can distract you from a much more important tax difference.

Stocks and shares ISA

For the 2026–2027 tax year, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) sets the total ISA subscription limit at £20,000 across all your ISAs. Investments held inside an ISA can produce investment income and capital gains without UK tax, and HMRC’s guidance says those ISA returns do not need to be declared on a tax return under the stated rules. You still have to meet the eligibility and account conditions, and providers apply their own transfer procedures.

Shares already held outside an ISA generally cannot simply be moved into one. HMRC identifies limited exceptions, so ask the provider and check the current HMRC rules before assuming an existing portfolio can be transferred without a sale and repurchase.

General investment account

A general investment account (GIA) has no ISA subscription limit, but it does not give ISA tax shelter. A gain when you sell may be subject to Capital Gains Tax (CGT), and dividend income above the applicable allowance may be taxable. The result depends on the tax year, your income, the type of transaction and your personal circumstances.

How the wrappers differ

Feature Stocks and shares ISA General investment account
2026–2027 contribution limit £20,000 total ISA subscription limit (HMRC) No ISA subscription limit
Tax on investment income and gains HMRC says income and gains within an ISA are tax-free under the applicable rules Dividends and gains may be taxable; liability depends on the year and your circumstances
Existing shares moved in Generally not permitted as a simple transfer; HMRC exceptions may apply Not applicable
Best use to investigate Long-term investing where the ISA allowance and rules suit you Investing beyond ISA capacity or where a taxable account is otherwise appropriate

You can hold both types of account. Keep records for taxable holdings even when your platform supplies statements, because you may need purchase prices, sale proceeds, dividend details and allowable costs to calculate a tax position.

2. Compare platforms on total cost, not a headline commission

There is no universal “best broker”. A platform that is cheap for one monthly investor can be expensive for someone who trades frequently, holds a large portfolio or buys overseas securities. Build a comparison around your expected behaviour and calculate the pounds you would pay in a typical year.

The Financial Conduct Authority’s 2024 Financial Lives survey shows what non-advised platform users look for: 62% considered low platform fees, 52% considered the range of shares and funds, and 51% considered website usability. These are consumer survey findings from the FCA in 2024, not a ranking of providers or a statement of current prices.

Costs to put in one schedule

Charge or feature What to check Why it changes your result
Dealing commission Price per buy or sell order, and whether an order placed by telephone costs more Frequent trades can make a small per-order fee larger than an annual platform fee
Regular-investment charge Whether scheduled investments are free or have a separate charge Small monthly orders can be uneconomic if each attracts a fixed fee
Platform or custody fee Percentage or flat charge, minimums, maximums and the portfolio value on which it is calculated A percentage fee grows with the portfolio; a minimum can dominate a small account
Inactivity or account fees Any charge for not trading, withdrawing or keeping cash A buy-and-hold investor may pay for activity they do not use
Foreign-exchange charge Rate or margin applied when converting pounds for non-UK shares or dividends Currency costs can exceed dealing commission on overseas orders
Market-specific costs Exchange, settlement or local taxes for the market you want to use Non-UK transactions may have charges that do not appear on a UK share quote
Transfers and closure Charges for transferring an ISA or GIA, selling holdings, or closing the account A low entry price may be offset by an expensive exit or transfer
Current provider amounts Not stated in the available FCA survey and HMRC/FSCS material; obtain the provider’s current tariff Prices and terms change, so do not rely on an old comparison table

Check the investment menu and dealing tools

  • Confirm that the platform offers the UK shares, funds or exchange-traded products you actually intend to research.
  • Look for recurring investment if you plan to invest on a schedule, and check the charge for each scheduled order.
  • Check which order types are available, how quotes expire, and whether the service offers real-time or delayed prices.
  • Review statements, tax documents, dividend handling, cash interest arrangements and how quickly you can withdraw.
  • Test whether the website and app present fees, holdings and corporate actions clearly. An attractive interface is not a substitute for a complete tariff.
  • Read customer-support hours and the procedure for correcting an erroneous order or reporting suspected fraud.

Verify the legal entity and permissions

Use the FCA Firm Checker or Financial Services Register to verify the exact legal entity and the permissions for the service you want. Do not rely on a familiar trading name, an incoming caller’s phone number or a copied website. Ask which entity holds your client money and investments, whether the service is execution-only or advised, and what protection applies to that specific activity and product.

3. A practical account-opening and first-order process

  1. Set a written objective. Note what the money is for, when you may need it and how much of a temporary fall you could withstand without selling in panic. Shares are generally unsuitable for money you may need shortly.
  2. Select the wrapper. Compare a stocks and shares ISA with a GIA using the tax rules above. Check your remaining ISA subscription capacity for the tax year and the provider’s transfer rules.
  3. Shortlist several regulated platforms. Put each provider’s dealing, regular-investment, custody, foreign-exchange, inactivity, transfer and closure charges in the same worksheet. Use the same assumed order frequency and portfolio size for a fair comparison.
  4. Check authorisation independently. Search the FCA register using the legal entity’s details obtained from the provider’s terms, not a link supplied by an unsolicited caller. Confirm that the permissions cover the service and instruments you plan to use.
  5. Complete the application. Expect identity, address, tax-residency and source-of-funds questions. Read the client-agreement, order-execution, cash, complaints and asset-segregation sections before accepting.
  6. Fund the account safely. Use the bank details displayed inside the authenticated platform or confirmed through an official channel. Do not send money to a new account supplied only by email or telephone.
  7. Choose an investment plan. Decide whether diversified funds, a small set of individual companies, or a combination fits your knowledge and risk capacity. Set a maximum position size and a rebalancing rule before you trade.
  8. Place and review the order. Check the instrument name, ticker, quantity or cash amount, estimated total cost, dealing venue and order validity. Save the contract note and confirm that the holding appears correctly after execution.
  9. Maintain records and review periodically. Keep statements, dividend records, deposits and withdrawals. Review whether the allocation and risk still fit your objective rather than reacting to every daily price movement.

4. Decide what kind of UK investment to buy

Individual company shares

A share gives exposure to one company’s profits, assets and prospects. Returns can come from price changes and dividends, but a company can reduce or cancel a dividend, issue new shares, lose market share or fail. A concentrated holding can therefore produce a much larger loss than a broad portfolio. Before buying, read the company’s latest reports and understand what would make your original investment case wrong.

Diversified funds

A fund pools many holdings, reducing the effect of one company’s failure. Diversification does not remove market risk: the whole market or a sector can fall, and a fund can lose money. Check the fund’s objective, geographic and sector exposure, ongoing charges, dealing spread, distribution policy and whether it is an index-tracking or actively managed product.

Matching risk to your circumstances

  • Time horizon: a longer period can provide more opportunity for recovery, but it does not guarantee a profit.
  • Capacity for loss: distinguish an emotionally uncomfortable fall from a fall that would prevent you paying essential costs.
  • Knowledge and attention: individual shares need ongoing company-specific research; a diversified fund may be simpler to maintain but still needs review.
  • Concentration: avoid allowing one company, sector or employer to determine the outcome of your financial plan.
  • Income needs: dividends are discretionary payments, not guaranteed interest. Treat projected income as uncertain.

Order choices and execution

A market order normally seeks execution at the best available price, which can move before execution. A limit order sets the highest price you will pay when buying or the lowest you will accept when selling, but it may not execute. Read the platform’s explanation of order validity, price types and dealing windows. For less-liquid shares, the difference between the buying and selling quote can be a material cost even when the advertised commission is zero.

5. Understand the taxes and transaction charges

Stamp Duty and SDRT on UK shares

HMRC says electronic purchases of existing shares in UK-incorporated companies usually attract Stamp Duty Reserve Tax (SDRT) at 0.5%, with exceptions. Paper transfers and certain arrangements can receive different treatment; new share issues and direct purchases of some funds are examples where the usual charge may not apply. Confirm the exact transaction and current HMRC rules rather than treating 0.5% as a universal charge on every investment.

Tax when investments sit outside an ISA

HMRC says a gain on disposing of an investment outside an ISA may be subject to CGT. Whether tax is due depends on the gain, allowable costs, applicable annual exemption and your circumstances in the relevant tax year. Keep acquisition and disposal records instead of assuming the platform has calculated your final liability.

Dividends received outside an ISA may be taxable above the allowance for the year. HMRC’s dividend guidance states a £500 dividend allowance for 2026–2027; rates and the interaction with your tax band must be checked against the current-year guidance. Do not apply another person’s tax outcome to your own return.

6. Know the risks before you invest

Market and company risk

Share prices can fall, sometimes rapidly, and you can lose some or all of the amount invested. Diversification reduces company-specific exposure but cannot protect against a broad market decline, recession, interest-rate shock or political event. A past rise, a high dividend yield or an analyst target is not a promise of future performance.

Liquidity, currency and operational risk

A thinly traded share may be difficult to sell at the price you expect. Overseas shares add currency movements and market-specific rules. Trading outages, incorrect instructions, delayed corporate-action processing or a mistaken bank transfer can also create losses or delays. Understand the platform’s complaints and correction process before an incident occurs.

Behavioural risk

Chasing a rapidly rising share, selling after a fall, trading too frequently or using borrowed money can turn a manageable investment into a damaging loss. A written allocation, order-size limit and review schedule can reduce decisions made under pressure. Never invest money needed for rent, bills or emergency costs simply because a share appears cheap.

7. What protection applies if a platform fails?

The Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) does not compensate you merely because an investment performed badly. For eligible investment claims involving firms that failed after 1 April 2019, FSCS guidance states that compensation can be up to £85,000 per eligible person per firm, subject to the scheme’s rules. Eligibility depends on the firm, regulated activity, product, client-asset position and the facts of the claim.

This is different from market protection. If you own a share that falls by 40%, that loss is normally an investment result, not an FSCS claim. A possible claim could arise where an authorised firm fails and there is a shortfall in eligible client money or assets, but you must establish that the particular service and circumstances meet the scheme’s conditions. Check both FCA authorisation and the relevant FSCS category; do not treat the £85,000 figure as insurance against a falling portfolio.

8. Recognise and avoid share scams

The FCA warns that share fraud can begin with a cold call or another unsolicited message. Fraudsters may promise unrealistic returns, create urgency, impersonate a legitimate firm, use a copied website or offer shares that do not exist or are worthless. The FCA’s consumer guidance states: You should only deal with financial services firms that are authorised by us.
