You can invest in South Korean stocks from abroad by opening an account with a Korean securities firm, using an overseas broker that offers access through a Korean omnibus account, or buying a South Korea-focused fund listed in your home market. The right route depends on your country of residence, the securities you want, total costs, and how you need dividends and taxes handled. The former foreign-investor registration requirement ended on December 14, 2023, but that change does not mean every broker accepts every overseas resident.
Choose the kind of exposure you want
First decide whether you want shares in particular Korean companies or broad exposure to the South Korean market. Buying individual shares gives you exposure to the companies you select; a fund gives you exposure to the portfolio it holds, not a direct choice of each underlying company.

The Korea Exchange’s trading guide describes mutual funds and ETFs as indirect ways to invest and gives the iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (EWY) as an overseas-listed example. Treat that as an example, not a recommendation: check the fund’s current documents and whether it is available to you before investing.
What changed for foreign investors
Foreign individuals no longer need the former foreign-investor registration certificate to invest in Korean listed shares. The Financial Services Commission announced the abolition in June 2023, and it took effect on December 14, 2023. Under the updated identification approach, individuals use passport numbers; foreign corporate entities use Legal Entity Identifiers (LEIs). This removes a registration hurdle, but it is not a guarantee that a particular securities firm will onboard you.

The Korean government’s February 26, 2026 briefing describes foreign individuals as being able to invest in domestic stocks through a local securities firm using a foreign omnibus account, without opening a separate domestic securities account. That describes the route in general; whether you can use it depends on the overseas intermediary and its service terms.
How to check access and open an account
- Identify your situation. Establish your country of tax residence and whether you are investing as an individual or an entity. Residence, nationality, and legal investor status are not interchangeable, and providers may apply different onboarding rules.
- Choose your route. For particular Korean companies, ask about a direct Korean securities-firm account and an overseas intermediary’s omnibus service. For broad exposure, investigate funds listed in a market your broker serves.
- Get eligibility confirmed in writing. Ask the provider whether it accepts residents of your country and supports the specific Korean market and securities you want. Confirm required identity and tax documents, any minimums or restrictions, and how the application is submitted.
- Compare the full cost of using the account. Ask for the trading commission, account or platform charges, custody fees if any, currency-conversion method and spread, and bank or transfer charges. The regulatory sources establish routes, not a universal fee schedule; costs and terms are provider-specific.
- Understand funding and withdrawals before sending money. Confirm which currencies and transfer methods are accepted, how funds are converted, expected processing steps, and how you can withdraw proceeds to an account in your country.
- Check trade and income handling. Confirm order types, trading access, settlement and how dividend payments and related records reach you. For an omnibus account, the intermediary’s distribution and reporting process is part of the service you are relying on.
What to know about omnibus accounts and dividends
In an omnibus arrangement, an overseas intermediary aggregates client trading through an account with a Korean securities firm. The Financial Services Commission’s December 17, 2025 framework release says the Korea Securities Depository allocates dividend entitlements to the omnibus account holder, which then distributes them proportionally to end investors. Ask the intermediary how it credits payments to your account, what statement or tax documents it provides, and how it addresses delays or corrections.

This structure is not simply the same account-opening process as dealing directly with a Korean securities firm. Do not assume that trading availability, records, fees, or the handling of investor entitlements are identical across providers; review the terms for the specific service.

There is no single tax rate or filing rule that can safely be applied to every nonresident investor. Dividend withholding, capital-gains treatment, treaty relief, foreign tax credits, and reporting can depend on your tax residence, treaty position, investor circumstances, and whether you hold shares or a fund. Check the current Korean rules and the rules in your country, or ask a qualified tax adviser, before trading. A broker’s tax documents may help with reporting but do not determine your tax obligations.

Foreign investment is also not necessarily unrestricted in every issuer. The Enforcement Decree of Korea’s Financial Investment Services and Capital Markets Act, Articles 187–188, effective August 4, 2026, retains restrictions for specified public-purpose corporations, with limits governed by applicable rules. If you are considering a particular company, check whether any current ownership restriction applies to that issuer.
Consider language and information access
Company information may not always be available in English at the same time or to the same extent as Korean-language disclosures. The Financial Services Commission reported that English disclosures submitted by KOSPI-listed firms to the Korea Exchange were about 13.8% of Korean-language disclosures in 2022. That is a dated comparison of disclosure counts; it does not establish current English coverage or translation quality. For individual shares, decide how you will follow company announcements and financial information in a language you can assess.

Do not assume Korea-listed ETFs are available through omnibus accounts
A Yonhap report on May 21, 2026 described a planned rule change to let offshore retail investors trade Korea-listed ETFs through omnibus accounts. The available official materials do not establish that this change was implemented. Before relying on this route, ask the intermediary and check for a current official notice; an overseas-listed South Korea fund is a separate route with its own mandate and terms.
