To invest for long-term index exposure, compare an index mutual fund with an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that tracks the Nifty 50 or Nifty Bank (often called Bank Nifty). Both are fund units intended to follow an index, but they are bought and priced differently. Futures are a third route, but they are derivatives with expiry, margin and contract terms—not fund units or a simple substitute for long-term ownership.
The choice depends on how you plan to transact and what risks you understand. Compare a fund’s expenses and tracking record; for an ETF, also account for trading costs and liquidity. Consider futures only if you understand the current contract, margin, expiry and settlement mechanics. This guide is about the Indian market and is educational, not individualized investment advice.
What it means to invest in the Nifty 50 or Bank Nifty
The Nifty 50 and Nifty Bank are market indices: they represent baskets of stocks according to their respective index methodologies. Investors usually get exposure through a product linked to the index rather than buying an index itself. An index mutual fund or ETF holds securities intended to track its benchmark; an index future is a derivative contract whose underlying is the index.

Index exposure does not promise a particular return. A fund’s return can differ from its benchmark because of expenses and tracking. Futures add contract-specific risks and can produce losses that are not comparable to simply holding fund units.
Choose between an index fund, ETF and futures
| Route | How it works | What to compare | Key caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Index mutual fund | A mutual fund aims to replicate an index by holding its constituents in similar proportions. | Benchmark, scheme expenses, published tracking error or tracking difference, and the applicable direct or regular plan terms. | Its return may diverge from the index. Transactions are based on the fund’s NAV process rather than a live exchange price. |
| ETF | A fund’s units trade on an exchange like shares, and the traded price changes during the session. | Benchmark, expenses, tracking, liquidity, bid-ask spread, brokerage and demat charges. | The exchange price can differ from the fund’s NAV; transaction costs and liquidity matter in addition to fund expenses. |
| Index futures | An exchange-traded derivative gives exposure through a contract on an index, with a defined lot size and expiry. | Notional exposure, current lot size, margin, expiry, liquidity, settlement and any costs of rolling to a later contract. | It is not a fund investment. Terms change, and derivatives have risk characteristics that must be understood before trading. |
The choice is not simply “which one has the highest return?” Index mutual funds and ETFs aim to track an index, while futures are contracts with their own expiry and margin requirements. The first decision is whether you want fund units for index exposure or are deliberately seeking derivative exposure.
How index mutual funds work
SEBI describes an index mutual fund as a passive mutual fund that aims to replicate an index such as the Nifty 50 by holding its constituents in similar proportions. “Aims to replicate” does not mean the fund will match the index exactly. Expenses and tracking error can cause its return to differ from the benchmark.

Mutual fund NAVs are declared after markets close, according to AMFI. That means you do not place an order at a continuously changing exchange price in the way you do with an ETF. If you value a mutual-fund transaction process based on NAV rather than intraday price selection, this distinction may suit your needs. The applicable dealing rules and cut-offs should be checked with the fund or platform when placing an order.
What to check before buying a fund
- Benchmark: Confirm that the scheme tracks the index you want—Nifty 50 or Nifty Bank—and check its official scheme information.
- Expenses: Compare the scheme’s current expenses on a like-for-like basis. A current, comparable expense figure for any particular scheme is not established here.
- Tracking: Look at published tracking error or tracking difference across consistent periods, using the fund’s disclosures. These are more informative about how closely it has followed its benchmark than the fund name alone.
- Plan terms: If considering direct or regular plan options, compare the terms and costs that apply to the specific plan. Do not assume that one plan’s figures describe another.
- Transaction process: Check how orders, applicable cut-offs and NAV allocation work on the AMC or investment platform you use.
Specific fund expenses, tracking figures, tax treatment and other scheme terms can change. Check current AMC and AMFI disclosures rather than relying on an old comparison or a fund’s past performance as a guarantee of future results.
How ETFs work and what exchange trading changes
An ETF is a fund whose units trade on an exchange like shares. SEBI notes that its market price changes with exchange trading. This lets an investor transact during the session at an exchange price, unlike a mutual-fund transaction based on the NAV process after markets close.

The live price is also a trade-off. The ETF’s market price may not be identical to its NAV, and the price at which an order executes depends on available buyers and sellers. A quoted price alone does not tell you the full cost of a transaction.

- Fund expenses and tracking: Compare the ETF’s expenses and published tracking error or tracking difference against other products tracking the same index.
- Bid-ask spread: Check the difference between the best available buying and selling prices. A wider spread can make an apparently low-expense ETF more costly to trade.
- Liquidity: Consider whether there is enough trading activity and depth for the order you intend to place. Liquidity can affect execution, especially if you use a market order.
- Brokerage and demat costs: SEBI notes these can apply in addition to fund expenses. Confirm the charges on your own account and broker schedule.
- Order and price: Review the live quote and order type before submission. An exchange-traded unit does not guarantee a particular execution price.
NSE Clearing has listed examples including Nippon India ETF Nifty BeES, SBI-ETF NIFTY 50 and SBI-ETF NIFTY BANK. Treat these as examples, not a ranking or confirmation of current availability, benchmark or cost. Verify each ETF’s current name, benchmark and disclosures with its AMC and the exchange. Minimum quantities in an NSE Clearing circular relate to a specific cross-margin context; they should not be treated as retail purchase minimums.
How to compare funds or ETFs tracking the same index
A useful comparison starts with products that track the same benchmark. A Nifty 50 product and a Nifty Bank product have different benchmarks, so comparing their tracking figures does not answer which one is more suitable. First establish the exposure you intend to hold; then compare eligible products on consistent information.

- Verify the benchmark. Read the current scheme or ETF disclosures and confirm the index tracked.
- Compare expenses. Use current published figures for the same type of plan or product. Include any transaction charges that apply to your own route.
- Compare tracking on matching periods. Review tracking error or tracking difference over the same disclosed periods. SEBI defines tracking error as the difference between portfolio returns, such as those of a mutual fund or ETF, and its benchmark index.
- Account for the transaction method. Mutual fund units use the NAV process; ETF units trade at exchange prices that move during the session.
- For ETFs, include execution quality. Check liquidity, bid-ask spread, brokerage and demat charges rather than comparing only fund expenses.
- Recheck source documents. Use current AMC, AMFI and exchange disclosures. Do not infer a product ranking from an index name or a single period’s return.
There are no current, comparable scheme expense, tracking or ETF spread figures established here, so this guide does not rank providers or name a best fund. A fair comparison requires current figures for the specific products and periods being considered.

Futures are exchange-traded contracts, not shares in the index and not units of a mutual fund or ETF. NSE lists futures on both Nifty 50 and Nifty Bank. Its derivatives pages describe near-, next- and far-month contracts, and its contract specifications page lists three consecutive monthly expiries for these indices.

Each contract has exchange-defined terms, including its lot size and expiry. The contract specifications page, marked updated 11 August 2026, says expiry is on the Tuesday of the expiry period; if Tuesday is a holiday, the previous trading day is used. These terms are time-sensitive. Check the current NSE contract information and applicable contract file before any trade rather than relying on a previously published lot-size example.

Terms to understand before considering a futures trade
- Underlying: Identify whether the contract is on NIFTY or BANKNIFTY and confirm the exact contract details.
- Notional exposure: A contract represents exposure based on the index level and the contract’s lot size. This is not the same as the cash amount deposited as margin; understand the full exposure before trading.
- Lot size: Verify the currently applicable lot size on NSE. Exchange lot sizes can change, so stale examples can misstate the contract value.
- Margin: Confirm the margin requirement with your broker and applicable exchange information. The current margin is not established here and can change.
- Expiry: Know the contract month and the applicable expiry date. An expiring contract is not an open-ended investment.
- Settlement and rolling: Understand the current settlement process and what it would mean to close or roll a position into a later month. Do not assume a fund-like holding process.
- Liquidity and costs: Check the contract’s trading liquidity and applicable charges, including any costs associated with closing or rolling the position.
The current margin, tax treatment and detailed settlement implications are not established here. Verify them from current exchange, clearing, broker and tax information relevant to your circumstances. SEBI advises investors to understand the features and risk characteristics of securities, including derivatives, before investing.
A cautious process for accessing each route
The steps below describe what to verify, not a recommendation to buy a particular product. Account requirements and platform screens vary, so follow the current instructions of the relevant AMC, broker and exchange-connected service.
For an index mutual fund
- Choose the intended benchmark—Nifty 50 or Nifty Bank—and identify schemes whose current disclosures confirm that benchmark.
- Compare current expenses and published tracking information across consistent periods; check the specific plan terms.
- Use the AMC or investment platform’s current mutual-fund order process. Confirm the scheme, plan, amount and transaction details before submitting.
- Review the transaction confirmation and the NAV-related information made available by the platform. Keep the scheme documents for future comparison.
For an ETF
- Confirm the ETF’s current benchmark and scheme disclosures with the AMC and exchange.
- Check the live bid and ask, spread, trading activity and depth for the order you intend to place.
- Review brokerage and demat charges, as well as the fund’s own expenses and tracking information.
- In your broker’s exchange-trading interface, verify the ETF symbol, quantity and order type, then review the expected order details before submitting.
- Check the executed trade confirmation and account statement rather than assuming the displayed quote was the final execution price.
For futures
- Use NSE’s current contract specifications and applicable contract file to verify the underlying, contract month, lot size and expiry.
- Confirm margin, charges, settlement process and risk controls with your broker and current exchange or clearing information.
- Calculate the contract’s full notional exposure and consider how a move in the index could affect the position. Margin is not a measure of the maximum possible loss.
- Only proceed if you understand the contract and can manage the position through market movement, expiry and any decision to close or roll it.
This is not a complete futures trading strategy. An order workflow cannot replace understanding how losses, margin calls, expiry and settlement apply to the specific contract.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing by name alone: Confirm the current benchmark and scheme disclosures; product labels are not a substitute for checking what the fund tracks.
- Comparing unlike figures: Expense and tracking comparisons should use the same benchmark, product type and consistent periods.
- Ignoring ETF execution costs: Fund expenses do not include every possible cost. Consider spread, liquidity, brokerage and demat charges.
- Treating NAV and ETF prices as interchangeable: Mutual fund NAVs are declared after markets close, while ETF prices move during exchange trading.
- Using old futures contract data: Verify current lot size, expiry and other contract terms with NSE before trading.
- Confusing cross-margin quantities with retail minimums: Quantities in the cited NSE Clearing circular serve a specific cross-margin context, not a general retail purchase rule.
- Assuming futures are a long-term fund alternative: Futures expire and have margin, settlement and derivative risks that fund units do not share in the same way.
- Assuming an index or product guarantees a return: Index tracking describes an investment approach, not a promised outcome.
What to verify before you act
Fund disclosures, ETF costs and exchange contract terms are not fixed by this guide. Before investing or trading, confirm current scheme information with the AMC and AMFI, ETF details and trading costs through the relevant exchange and broker, and futures specifications with NSE. Tax treatment, eligibility and personal suitability depend on facts not established here; consult current authoritative information or a qualified adviser for those questions.
