The disciplined way to invest in Indian IT stocks is to start with current company filings and a dated exchange price, then compare revenue growth, management guidance, operating margins, cash generation, balance-sheet strength and valuation on the same financial basis. A low P/E or enterprise-value multiple is not, by itself, evidence of value. Read each company’s risk disclosures, apply SEBI’s market-risk framework, and use a current sector benchmark only as context—not as a stock recommendation.
This guide gives you a repeatable research process. It does not rank stocks, set target prices or provide a personal recommendation; the sources available for this topic do not establish a current, matched valuation table for Indian IT companies.
What you are actually buying when you buy an Indian IT stock
An Indian IT company’s share represents a claim on a business that sells software development, consulting, engineering, business-process and managed services, usually to clients across several countries. The economic drivers are therefore broader than domestic technology spending. Client budgets, contract renewals, wage costs, utilisation, employee retention, pricing, acquisitions and exchange rates can all move earnings.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before comparing companies, define three things:
- The security: the exact listed equity share and exchange listing you intend to analyse.
- The reporting period: for example, the financial year ended March 31 or a particular quarter. Never compare one company’s latest quarter with another company’s full-year figure.
- The price date: the closing or other clearly identified market price used in your calculation. A multiple without a date can become misleading quickly.
Indian listed companies publish financial statements and disclosures through exchange and investor-relations channels. The National Stock Exchange annual-reports page and its financial-information disclosures are useful starting points. Infosys, as one example of a company-specific source, provides quarterly results, annual reports, financial highlights, ratios and guidance-versus-actual comparisons on its investor-relations filings page. Use the equivalent primary filing page for every other company you study.

Build an investable universe without assuming the “best” stock
Start with a defined list
Choose a practical universe—such as large, liquid IT-service companies listed in India—and write down the inclusion rule. You might require a minimum operating history, regular financial reporting and sufficient trading liquidity. The rule matters more than the label; “IT stock” can include software services, internet businesses, hardware makers and specialist engineering firms with very different economics.
Use NIFTY IT as a reference, not a verdict
A SEBI-hosted document dated April 2025 describes NIFTY IT as a 10-company index weighted by free-float market capitalisation. That is a dated description, not a permanent specification. Constituents, eligibility rules and methodology can change, so check the latest official index documentation before using it as a benchmark. The index can help you compare a company’s return or volatility with a sector reference, but index membership does not establish quality or suitability.
If you compare a company with the index, align the observation window, currency and return definition. Decide whether you are using a price return or a total-return series, and record the index version and date in your notes.

- Write your objective and risk limit. Decide whether the holding is intended for long-term growth, income or diversification, and what loss or volatility you could tolerate without selling impulsively.
- Fix the information date. Record the date on which you obtain the share price and the latest financial period available. Do not mix a current price with an old annual report without labelling the mismatch.
- Download primary documents. Collect the latest annual report, recent quarterly results, exchange disclosures, investor presentation and any earnings-call transcript that the company publishes.
- Extract comparable fields. Put revenue, growth, operating margin, cash flow, debt, cash, share count, guidance and key business exposures into a spreadsheet. Keep the original units—rupees, millions or crores—visible.
- Read the notes, not just the headline numbers. Look for acquisitions, restructuring costs, client concentration, changes in accounting estimates, contingent liabilities, receivables and non-cash gains.
- Calculate valuation with the dated price. Use a consistent earnings period and document whether the denominator is trailing, annualised or analyst-estimated. If you cannot make the basis consistent, do not rank the multiple.
- Stress-test the thesis. Ask what happens if growth slows, margins contract, a large client leaves, the rupee moves sharply or cash conversion deteriorates.
- Make a decision that matches your plan. A “watch,” “buy only below a specified valuation,” or “do not invest” outcome can all be rational. You do not need to own every company you research.
Key metrics for comparing Indian IT companies
Growth and demand quality
Begin with reported revenue growth for the same period and in the same currency basis. Separate organic growth from growth acquired through a purchase. Check whether growth is broad across clients, industries and geographies or depends on one large contract.
- Year-over-year and sequential growth: year-over-year comparisons reduce seasonality; sequential figures show momentum but can be distorted by holidays, furloughs or project timing.
- Constant-currency growth: useful for isolating operating performance from exchange-rate movements, provided the company explains its calculation.
- Bookings, deal wins and backlog: these are indicators of future work, not revenue already earned. Check conversion timing and cancellation terms.
- Management guidance: record the original forecast and compare it with the eventual result. Repeated guidance cuts deserve an explanation even when reported growth remains positive.
Do not treat a single strong quarter as a trend. Compare several periods and identify whether growth is accelerating, stable or decelerating.

Profitability and operating leverage
Operating margin shows how much revenue remains after operating costs but before financing and taxes, according to the company’s stated accounting basis. Compare margins on the same basis and check whether management excludes restructuring, acquisition or stock-based compensation costs.
- Track the direction and range of the margin rather than one peak number.
- Explain changes through utilisation, employee costs, subcontracting, pricing, automation, currency and one-off items.
- Check whether higher revenue is producing incremental operating profit. Falling incremental margins can signal that growth is becoming more expensive.
Cash generation and capital allocation
Profit is an accounting measure; cash generation tests whether customers actually pay and whether reported earnings convert into funds available to the business. Compare operating cash flow with net profit over several periods and investigate a persistent gap.
- Review free cash flow after necessary capital expenditure, while noting how the company defines it.
- Inspect receivables, unbilled revenue and contract assets. A rapid rise relative to revenue can precede weaker cash collection.
- Read the dividend, buyback and acquisition policy. A distribution is sustainable only if operating cash flow and the balance sheet support it.
Balance-sheet strength
List cash and liquid investments, borrowings, lease liabilities and significant guarantees. A net-cash position can provide resilience during a technology-spending downturn, but cash should be assessed for currency, repatriation, restricted status and the company’s stated use.
Also check working-capital commitments and acquisition obligations. Two companies with the same P/E can have very different financial risk if one carries substantial debt or recurring lease payments.
Workforce and operating indicators
IT services depend on skilled employees. Use disclosures such as headcount, attrition, utilisation, subcontractor use and hiring plans to understand cost and delivery pressure. These indicators are meaningful only when their definitions and periods are consistent; a change in measurement can make a trend appear better or worse than it is.

How to analyse valuation without being misled by a cheap multiple
Price-to-earnings (P/E)
P/E is calculated as share price divided by earnings per share (EPS). State whether EPS is trailing twelve-month, full-year reported, annualised from a quarter or an estimate. Use the same accounting basis and share-count treatment for every company. A low P/E may reflect slower growth, weaker cash conversion, higher risk or a temporary earnings peak.

Enterprise value to operating earnings
Enterprise value (EV) generally starts with equity value and adjusts for debt, cash and other relevant claims. EV-to-EBIT or EV-to-EBITDA compares the value of the whole operating business with an operating-earnings measure. Define the exact numerator and denominator you use, and explain treatment of leases, minority interests and exceptional items.
A valuation worksheet
| Field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Share price | Exchange, price type and date | Multiples change with the market price. |
| Shares outstanding | Period-end or diluted count, with source | Converts price into equity value and EPS. |
| Earnings | Defined period and accounting basis | Prevents mixing trailing, annualised and forecast figures. |
| Cash and debt | As of the same reporting date | Required for a consistent enterprise-value calculation. |
| Operating earnings | EBIT or EBITDA definition | Different definitions can produce different EV multiples. |
| Adjustments | One-offs, acquisitions, leases and exceptional items | Shows whether the multiple reflects sustainable operations. |
Then compare the multiple with growth, margin stability, cash conversion and risk exposure. A multiple is a comparison tool, not a conclusion. The sources available for this guide do not provide a current, matched set of prices and multiples, so retrieve those figures from dated exchange data and the latest company-period filings before making a comparison.
A like-for-like comparison template
Use one table for all companies and fill every row from the same reporting period wherever possible. If a value is not disclosed, write “not stated” and preserve the source rather than estimating it.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Growth and demand | What was reported revenue growth? What is management guiding to? Is demand diversified by client, industry and geography? |
| Profitability | What is the operating margin, and is it stable, expanding or contracting? Which costs explain the movement? |
| Cash and returns | How does operating cash flow compare with profit? What is free cash flow? What dividends, buybacks or acquisitions were disclosed? |
| Balance sheet | How much cash, debt, lease liability and working-capital exposure exists? |
| Valuation | What are P/E and the chosen EV-to-operating-earnings measure at the same price date and financial period? |
| Risk exposure | How sensitive is the company to clients, industries, currencies, talent costs, regulation and liquidity? |
| Sector context | How does it compare with a clearly dated and currently defined benchmark? |
The output should be a transparent comparison, not a league table. Record disagreements between management’s adjusted measures and statutory figures so that you can revisit them later.

Risks you must price into an Indian IT investment
SEBI Investor identifies market, inflation, liquidity, business, volatility and currency risk. Its risk guidance explains these categories and stresses understanding your goals and risk appetite.
| Risk | How it can affect an IT stock | Questions for your review |
|---|---|---|
| Market risk | The share price can fall because of broad equity-market repricing even when company results are unchanged. | Could you hold through a market drawdown without needing the money? |
| Inflation risk | Higher wages, vendor costs and client budget pressure can reduce real returns and margins. | Can pricing and productivity offset cost inflation? |
| Liquidity risk | Thin trading or stressed markets can widen spreads and make an exit costly. | Are normal trading volumes adequate for your position size? |
| Business risk | Lost contracts, weak demand, cyber incidents, delivery failures or regulatory changes can reduce revenue and profit. | How concentrated are clients, sectors and delivery locations? |
| Volatility risk | Results, guidance, currency moves or global news can produce large short-term price swings. | Have you chosen a time horizon that matches this volatility? |
| Currency risk | Revenue and costs in different currencies can change reported growth and margins when exchange rates move. | What hedging policy is disclosed, and which currency exposures remain open? |
Company-specific disclosures
Read the risk section of each company’s latest annual filing rather than copying a generic sector list. For example, Infosys’s FY2026 Form 20-F says that investing in its securities involves a high degree of risk and explains that identified risks could adversely affect its business, financial condition, results, prospects and share price. That disclosure applies to Infosys and its reporting period; it should not be generalized to every Indian IT company. The filing is available from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission archive.
Look for risks involving data protection, intellectual-property claims, artificial-intelligence adoption, subcontractors, visas and immigration, geopolitical restrictions, client concentration, acquisitions, employee retention and service outages. Note the company’s stated mitigation, but judge whether the exposure is actually declining.

- Confirm suitability for yourself. Set an investment amount, time horizon, emergency-fund boundary and maximum position size. SEBI Investor’s home page says: “Understand before you invest. Choose regulated investment products. Start early, stay invested. Beware of investment frauds.” Read the statement at SEBI Investor.
- Use a regulated intermediary. Verify the broker’s current registration and disclosures through official Indian regulatory or exchange resources. Do not rely on an advertisement, influencer link or unverified return claim.
- Complete account and identity requirements. A demat account holds the shares and a trading account routes orders. Follow the intermediary’s current KYC and bank-linking process, and check every name and tax identifier before submitting.
- Choose the order deliberately. A limit order controls the maximum price you will pay but may not execute; a market order prioritises execution but can fill at an unexpected price, especially in a less liquid stock. Review quantity, exchange, product type and validity before confirming.
- Keep an audit trail. Save the contract note, order confirmation, research spreadsheet, filing dates and the reason for the decision. Revisit the thesis when results, guidance or risk disclosures change—not merely when the share price moves.
Common analytical mistakes and how to correct them
Using a stale price or period
Symptom: a polished P/E comparison has no price date or mixes annual and quarterly denominators.
Correction: add price date, exchange, reporting period and accounting basis beside every multiple.
Calling the lowest multiple the best value
Symptom: the analysis stops after ranking P/E.
Correction: require evidence on growth, margin durability, cash conversion, balance-sheet risk and company-specific disclosures before forming a view.

Confusing guidance with results
Symptom: a management forecast is presented as achieved revenue.
Correction: keep guidance, actual performance and the variance in separate columns, with the date each was published.
Ignoring accounting definitions
Symptom: “operating margin,” “free cash flow” or “adjusted profit” is compared without checking the footnotes.
Correction: copy the company’s definition, reconcile adjusted figures to statutory figures where possible and mark exclusions.
Assuming the index is unchanged
Symptom: an old NIFTY IT constituent list is treated as current.
Correction: verify the latest constituents, free-float rules and review schedule before calculating sector-relative performance.

Symptom: a company appears diversified by geography but depends on a few clients or one industry.
Correction: read concentration tables and customer-risk language in the annual filing, then test the effect of losing a major account.
A decision checklist you can reuse each quarter
- Have I identified the exact share, exchange, price date and financial period?
- Did I use the company filing and exchange disclosure rather than an unsourced summary?
- Is revenue growth broad, and did reported results meet, exceed or miss guidance?
- Are operating margins stable after considering wages, utilisation, pricing, currency and one-offs?
- Does operating cash flow support reported profit, dividends and acquisitions?
- What do cash, debt, leases, receivables and contingent obligations imply for resilience?
- Are P/E and EV-based multiples calculated on matching periods and definitions?
- Which SEBI risk categories and company-specific risks could invalidate my thesis?
- Is the position size consistent with my goals, risk appetite and liquidity needs?
- What precise evidence would make me add, hold, reduce or exit?
Where to keep monitoring
Use the NSE annual-reports directory for filing history and the NSE financial-information page for exchange disclosures. Company investor-relations pages provide the detailed period-by-period context; Infosys’s reports and filings page is an example of the type of archive to look for. Recheck the benchmark methodology and constituents whenever you update a sector comparison, because the April 2025 description is not a guarantee of the index’s composition in a later period.
