There is no single instrument called a commodity investment. Futures, exchange-traded products and mining stocks can all provide commodity-related exposure, but they represent different legal and economic interests: a futures contract, an interest in a product with a particular structure, or equity in an operating company. Before choosing a route, decide which exposure you actually want and inspect the specific contract or product documents. None is a universal substitute for owning a physical commodity, and no one route is best for every investor.

What it means to invest in commodities

“Commodities” describes an exposure category, not one standard investment. A product connected to a commodity might track a futures contract, hold a commodity or derivatives, represent unsecured debt, or own shares of a company that extracts or produces a resource. Those structures can react differently to the same change in a commodity’s price.

The key question is not just “Which commodity?” It is also “What do I own or agree to, and what else can affect its value?” A contract has contractual terms and a settlement or delivery date. An exchange-traded product has a legal structure described in its offering documents. A mining stock is company equity, whose value reflects the business as well as the commodity market.

This guide focuses on the U.S. regulatory context reflected in official investor and SEC materials. It explains structural differences, not a personalized investment recommendation or a general tax comparison. Contract terms, product documents, fees, access and tax treatment can vary, so verify current details for the particular instrument and jurisdiction.

Futures, exchange-traded products and mining stocks at a glance

Route What you hold What can drive its value Structure and key risks What to inspect
Commodity futures A contractual agreement to buy or sell a specified quantity at a set price on a future date. The relevant futures contract and its terms; the exposure is not a share of a company or fund. Contractual exposure with contract-specific mechanics and risks. Futures professionals dealing with the public or providing futures advice must be registered as applicable; the CFTC is the federal futures regulator. The specific contract, its delivery or settlement terms, and the registration of the firm or person handling trades or advice.
Exchange-traded commodity exposure It depends: a registered ETF share, an interest in a commodity trust, or an ETN that is unsecured debt, among other possible structures. The product’s stated holdings, reference exposure and structure. Exchange trading alone does not ensure that the market price equals net asset value. Protections and risks depend on the legal structure. Commodity trusts are not registered investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940 even when called ETFs; ETNs carry issuer credit risk and can involve total-loss risk. The prospectus and disclosures: legal form, underlying exposure, fees, risks, trading-price information and relevant registration status.
Mining stock Equity in a company, not direct ownership of the commodity. Commodity prices as well as production and extraction costs, exploration results, taxes, regulation, political and economic conditions, and environmental developments. Company-specific operating and equity risk. A share price need not move one-for-one with the commodity price. The company’s filings and risk disclosures, including operating factors that could affect its business and shares.

Fees, liquidity, trading-price behavior, tax treatment, leverage and mechanics are not established uniformly across these categories. They must be assessed for the particular contract, product, company and account. The table is a starting point for that investigation, not a claim that each route provides comparable exposure.

How commodity futures work

A commodity futures contract is an agreement to buy or sell a specified quantity of a commodity at a set price on a future date. It is a contract—not a share in a fund or a company. Its exposure is tied to the contract’s terms, so the fact that two contracts refer to the same commodity does not make them interchangeable.

Investor.gov explains that the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is the federal regulator for futures and states: “The SEC does not regulate commodity futures.” Investor.gov also says futures professionals must be registered with the National Futures Association (NFA). Before giving a firm or person access to your money, verify the registration of anyone who trades futures with the public or provides futures advice.

What you need to check in a particular contract

  • Contract specification: Confirm the commodity, specified quantity, price terms and future date. Do not assume the details from a product name or a general description of the commodity.
  • Settlement or delivery: Establish what the contract provides for at the relevant date. The available official overview defines futures contracts but does not establish one delivery or settlement process for every commodity contract.
  • Intermediary and access: Identify the firm and any person providing advice or trading futures for the public, then verify the applicable registration. The availability and mechanics of access depend on the contract and intermediary.
  • Costs and risks: Obtain contract- and account-specific information before trading. There is no universal fee, margin, leverage, daily settlement or roll-cost description that applies to all commodities in the materials discussed here.

These checks matter because “futures exposure” is not a complete description of an investment’s mechanics. A reader should not infer a particular margin requirement, leverage level, settlement routine or delivery obligation from a broad category label. Those details need to come from the specific contract and the intermediary’s current disclosures.

How to assess exchange-traded commodity exposure

First identify what the product legally is. The phrase “commodity ETF” is not enough. Investor.gov distinguishes registered ETFs from commodity trusts and exchange-traded notes (ETNs). Commodity trusts may hold commodities, currencies or derivatives, but they are not registered investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940 even when the product’s name includes “ETF.” An ETN is an unsecured debt obligation of its issuer and can involve the risk of losing the entire investment.

Do not assume that an exchange-traded product owns the commodity, holds a particular kind of futures contract, or has the protections associated with a registered investment company. The ticker and marketing shorthand do not settle those questions. Read the prospectus and product disclosures to find the product’s actual legal form, stated exposure and risks.

Understand market price and net asset value

For registered ETFs, the SEC explains that shares can trade at a premium or discount to net asset value (NAV)—that is, the exchange price can be above or below the value represented by the fund’s assets per share. Exchange listing does not guarantee that the trading price equals NAV.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is an important scope distinction: the SEC’s general ETF investor bulletin expressly excludes commodity exchange-traded products outside the registered-investment-company category. Its discussion of ordinary registered ETFs should not be treated as a blanket description of commodity trusts or ETNs. Check the product’s own disclosures for the information applicable to its structure and trading.

Read the product documents in a useful order

  1. Confirm the legal structure. Look for whether the document describes a registered ETF, commodity trust, ETN or another structure. If the name uses “ETF,” do not treat that word as a legal classification by itself.
  2. Find the stated exposure. Determine whether the product holds a commodity, currencies, derivatives or another exposure, and how its documents describe its objective. Do not infer holdings from the commodity name alone.
  3. Read the risk disclosures. Identify risks specific to the structure and underlying exposure, including the possibility of loss. For an ETN, note that it is unsecured debt and assess issuer-related risk from the product’s disclosures.
  4. Check trading-price information. For a registered ETF, consider the possibility that its market price may be above or below NAV. For products outside that category, use their own documentation rather than importing the ordinary registered-ETF bulletin’s scope.
  5. Compare costs and practical trading details. Use current product documents and brokerage information to check fees, liquidity and other trading terms. There is no single cost or liquidity figure established for all commodity products.

A product that is exchange-traded may be convenient to buy or sell through an account that supports it, but the trading venue does not erase its legal structure, underlying risks or potential difference between market price and NAV. Treat convenience and exposure as separate questions.

How mining stocks provide commodity exposure

A mining stock is a share of an operating company. Buying it gives you equity exposure to that company, not direct ownership of the metal or other commodity it produces. The commodity’s market price can matter to the business, but it is only one influence on the share price.

SEC-filed prospectus risk disclosures identify several company and operating factors that can affect mining-related investments: commodity prices, extraction and production costs, exploration success, taxes, regulation, international political and economic conditions, and environmental developments. A change in any of these may affect expected business results independently of a commodity’s quoted price.

Why a mining share may diverge from the commodity

  • Costs affect the business: Extraction and production costs influence the company’s operations, so a change in the commodity price is not the only relevant input.
  • Exploration can succeed or fail: The outcome of exploration is a company-specific uncertainty, rather than a direct measure of the current commodity price.
  • Rules and taxes matter: Regulation and taxes can affect the company’s operating environment and finances.
  • Conditions differ by location: International political and economic developments may influence a company’s business.
  • Environmental developments are relevant: Environmental factors are among the risks identified in prospectus disclosures and can affect an operating company.

For those reasons, a mining stock should not be described as a direct substitute for a commodity or as a guaranteed way to track its price. A company’s shares incorporate the prospects and risks of that business. Consult its filings and risk disclosures rather than relying on the name of the commodity alone.

Choose the route by the exposure you want

Start by distinguishing the three possible goals. If you want exposure to the terms of a particular futures contract, investigate that contract and the intermediary. If you want an exchange-traded product, identify its legal structure before evaluating its stated exposure. If you want equity in a company involved in extraction or production, analyze the company’s operating risks as well as commodity prices.

  1. State the desired exposure precisely. Write down whether you mean a futures-price exposure, a specific fund or trust structure, an ETN, or company equity. “I want to invest in commodities” is too broad to identify what you would own or risk.
  2. Identify the instrument, not just the commodity. For a futures position, find the contract specification. For an exchange-traded product, find the prospectus and legal classification. For a mining share, find the company’s filings and risk disclosures.
  3. Map the main value drivers. Ask what could move the instrument besides the commodity price. For a mining company, the prospectus factors include costs, exploration, taxes, regulation, international conditions and environmental developments. For a product or contract, read the relevant terms and disclosures.
  4. Compare costs and trading conditions on like terms. Check current fees, liquidity and trading-price information for the specific instruments you are considering. Do not compare a general category’s assumed costs with a figure from a particular product or account.
  5. Verify access and oversight. For futures in the U.S., check the registration of a firm or person who trades futures with the public or gives futures advice. For exchange-traded products, establish the legal structure and read the corresponding disclosures.
  6. Check tax questions separately. The sources underlying this comparison do not establish a general tax rule that applies across futures, exchange-traded products and mining stocks. Consult current product documentation and appropriate tax guidance for your circumstances and jurisdiction.
  7. Make the decision only after the instrument is clear. If you cannot explain what you hold, how its value is determined, and what risks its documents identify, the commodity label alone is not enough to make an informed comparison.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating all three routes as ownership of the physical commodity. A futures contract is an agreement; an exchange-traded product may be a trust or unsecured debt; a mining stock is company equity. Read the instrument’s terms instead of assuming physical ownership.
  • Assuming every product called a commodity ETF is a registered ETF. Investor.gov says commodity trusts can use “ETF” in a name without being registered investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940. Check the legal classification in the documents.
  • Assuming an exchange price equals NAV. Registered ETF shares can trade at a premium or discount. The SEC’s general ETF bulletin does not cover all commodity ETPs, so apply the information only within its stated scope.
  • Expecting a mining share to track the commodity one-for-one. Operating costs, exploration, taxes, regulation, political and economic conditions, and environmental developments can all matter to company equity.
  • Generalizing contract mechanics. A broad futures definition does not establish margin, leverage, daily settlement, delivery or roll mechanics across commodities. Obtain the specifications and current terms for the actual contract.
  • Assuming one tax rule or cost applies to every route. The comparison does not establish universal fees or tax treatment. Check current documentation for the relevant instrument and seek appropriate tax guidance.

Sources and scope

Investor.gov’s “Commodities” information supports the futures definition, U.S. regulator and registration distinctions, and its warning that the SEC does not regulate commodity futures. Investor.gov’s “Exchange-Traded Products (ETPs)” information explains distinctions among ETFs, commodity trusts and ETNs. The SEC’s February 23, 2023 investor bulletin on ETFs discusses market price versus NAV for registered ETFs and states its scope limitation for commodity ETPs outside the registered-investment-company category. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance’s April 29, 2025 material distinguishes registered ETFs from commodity funds and ETNs. SEC-filed prospectus risk disclosures provide examples of risks relevant to futures, derivatives, metals and mining companies; those disclosures describe product risks, not a universal forecast.

This is a general structural comparison based on U.S.-oriented official materials, not individualized financial or tax advice. The material does not establish a universal ranking, expected return, performance figure or risk statistic for the three routes. Current contract terms, prospectuses, company filings and appropriate tax guidance are necessary for decisions about a specific instrument.
