The simplest way to invest in Chinese technology stocks without selecting individual companies is to buy a China-focused exchange-traded fund (ETF) through a brokerage account. Choose the fund by the exposure you want: MCHI for broad Chinese equities, KWEB for internet platforms, CQQQ for a technology-sector portfolio, or CNQQ for a thematic basket spanning several technology industries.
None is universally “best.” Their indexes, listings, concentration, fees and risks differ materially. The figures below are dated issuer disclosures from 2026; fund holdings, expenses and regulatory conditions can change, so read the current prospectus and holdings file before placing an order.
What you are buying when you use a China technology ETF
An ETF share is a listed security. You purchase it in a brokerage account in the same way you would purchase another exchange-traded stock; you are not ordering a physical product or directly opening a mainland Chinese brokerage account. The ETF holds, or obtains exposure to, a portfolio defined by its index and publishes a prospectus describing its methods and risks.

It can mean internet platforms, software, electronics, electric-vehicle and transport technology, industrial automation, health technology, or a broad China index in which technology is only one sector. The index definition is therefore the first decision, before fees or recent performance.

Choose the exposure that matches your objective
Broad China exposure: MCHI
The iShares MSCI China ETF (MCHI) tracks the MSCI China Index. Technology companies are included, but the fund is designed as a broad China equity holding rather than a pure technology fund. BlackRock reported 578 holdings, a 0.59% expense ratio and a 0.02% 30-day median bid-ask spread as of October 6, 2026. The large holdings count can reduce the effect of any one company or narrow technology theme, although it also means that non-technology sectors influence the result.
Internet and platform exposure: KWEB
The KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF (KWEB) tracks the CSI Overseas China Internet Index. The index covers China-based internet and internet-related technology companies traded in Hong Kong, on Nasdaq or on the New York Stock Exchange. The September 30, 2026 factsheet listed 47 holdings and 0.69% annual operating expenses. Its five largest reported weights were Tencent at 10.33%, Alibaba at 8.55%, PDD at 8.14%, Meituan at 6.97% and NetEase at 6.63%.
That structure gives direct exposure to consumer internet and platform businesses, but it is more concentrated than a broad China fund. The reported top-five weights alone represented a substantial portion of the portfolio on that date, and the mix can change with index rebalancing and market prices.
Technology-sector exposure across share classes: CQQQ
The Invesco China Technology ETF (CQQQ) tracks the FTSE China Incl A 25% Technology Capped Index. Invesco states that the fund generally invests at least 90% of assets in securities in the index, including American depositary receipts (ADRs) and global depositary receipts (GDRs). Eligible companies can include A-shares, B-shares, H-shares, N-shares, Red Chips, P Chips and S Chips, so the portfolio can reach companies through several Chinese and international listing venues.
Annual operating expenses were 0.65%, according to Invesco’s 2026 disclosure. The index’s technology cap is intended to keep the portfolio focused on technology while limiting the weight of any single technology constituent. The exact holdings and their weights still require checking in the current holdings file.

Multi-industry technology theme: CNQQ
The Rayliant-ChinaAMC Transformative China Tech ETF (CNQQ) follows an index of 300 China or Hong Kong companies. Its eligible groups include automotive and transportation; commercial and consumer service technology; electronics and electrical products; health technology; industrial and manufacturing technology; and digital technology and software.
Annual operating expenses were 0.75% in the 2026 disclosure. CNQQ is therefore a thematic, multi-industry basket rather than an internet-platform fund. Its broader definition of technology can make its sector mix look very different from KWEB or CQQQ, even though all three are marketed as technology-related choices.
Side-by-side comparison
| ETF | Index and intended exposure | Holdings or scope | Published cost or spread | What to verify before trading |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CQQQ | FTSE China Incl A 25% Technology Capped Index; direct China technology-sector exposure | Can include A-, B-, H-, N-, Red Chip, P Chip and S Chip securities; generally at least 90% in index securities, ADRs and GDRs | 0.65% annual operating expenses (Invesco, 2026) | Current constituent weights, listing venue and trading liquidity |
| KWEB | CSI Overseas China Internet Index; China-based internet and internet-related technology companies | 47 holdings; Hong Kong, Nasdaq and NYSE listings (KraneShares factsheet, September 30, 2026) | 0.69% annual operating expenses (KraneShares, 2026) | Current concentration and whether each holding is an operating company, ADR or another listed vehicle |
| MCHI | MSCI China Index; broad China equity exposure with technology included | 578 holdings (BlackRock, October 6, 2026) | 0.59% expense ratio; 0.02% 30-day median bid-ask spread (BlackRock, October 6, 2026) | How much of the current portfolio is technology and the latest spread and volume |
| CNQQ | Thematic index covering six technology-related industry groups | 300 China or Hong Kong companies | 0.75% annual operating expenses (Rayliant-ChinaAMC, 2026) | Current industry allocation, constituent turnover and market liquidity |
The expense figures are annual fund operating expenses, not a commission charged each time you trade. They are deducted from fund assets and can affect returns over time. A bid-ask spread is a trading cost visible in the difference between the price buyers offer and sellers demand; MCHI’s 0.02% figure is a 30-day median measured on the stated date, not a guarantee for every order or market session. Comparable spread or volume figures for the other funds were not stated in the cited 2026 disclosures.
A step-by-step process for buying a fund
- Define the role in your portfolio. Decide whether you want broad China exposure, internet platforms, or technology across hardware, software and industrial categories. Write down the reason for the position and the conditions under which you would reduce it.
- Read the current prospectus and index methodology. Confirm the index rules, rebalancing schedule, eligible countries and share classes. Check whether the fund uses ordinary shares, ADRs, GDRs, Hong Kong listings, Stock Connect A-shares, participatory notes, swaps or other instruments. The available instruments can change the risks you actually bear.
- Open or use a brokerage account that lists the ticker. Search for CQQQ, KWEB, MCHI or CNQQ in the broker’s securities finder. Confirm that the security is available to residents of your jurisdiction and that the account can hold the relevant exchange listing.
- Check the trading details. Review the current bid-ask spread, recent trading volume, market hours, order types, fractional-share rules and any commission. A limit order can specify the highest price you will pay or the lowest price you will accept; whether fractional trading or a particular order type is supported depends on the broker.
- Review account and tax documentation. Find out how the broker handles foreign-currency conversion, distributions, withholding documentation and annual tax forms. Rules depend on your country and account type, so use the broker’s current disclosures or a qualified tax professional for personal advice.
- Choose a position size deliberately. A single-country, sector-focused ETF is not a complete portfolio. Consider how its political, currency and technology risks interact with your existing holdings before committing capital. Do not size the position solely from a recent price move or headline.
- Place and confirm the order. Enter the ticker, number of shares (or the supported fractional amount), order type, limit price if applicable and time-in-force. Verify the executed price, filled quantity, fees and settlement information in the trade confirmation.
- Set a review and rebalancing rule. At a schedule that fits your plan, check the latest holdings, expense ratio, index rules and regulatory disclosures. Rebalance according to the policy you wrote rather than reacting to a single day’s news.
How to compare funds beyond the headline fee
Index definition
Two funds can both use “China tech” in their descriptions while holding very different businesses. KWEB’s index is explicitly internet-focused. CQQQ starts with a capped technology index that can access multiple Chinese share classes. CNQQ defines technology across six industry groups. MCHI begins with the broad MSCI China universe, so technology is only part of the exposure. Read the methodology rather than inferring the portfolio from the ticker.
Holdings and concentration
Holdings count is a useful first indicator, not a complete measure of diversification. MCHI reported 578 holdings, while KWEB reported 47 on its September 30, 2026 factsheet. A fund with many holdings can still be dominated by a few large companies; inspect the top-10 weights, sector allocation and any index caps. For KWEB, the reported weights of Tencent, Alibaba, PDD, Meituan and NetEase show how quickly platform-specific exposure can accumulate.

Listing venues and security types
Check where each underlying security trades and what the ETF actually owns. CQQQ’s stated universe includes several mainland, Hong Kong and overseas share classes, while KWEB’s index uses Hong Kong, Nasdaq and NYSE listings. An ADR or GDR represents an overseas trading form of an underlying company’s shares; it is not identical to buying a mainland-listed share. The prospectus should explain custody, conversion and trading arrangements.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Costs, spreads and tracking difference
Compare the annual expense ratio with the fund’s historical tracking difference, which measures how the ETF has actually deviated from its index after expenses and implementation costs. Also compare the live bid-ask spread and trading volume at the time you intend to trade. A lower stated expense ratio does not automatically produce a lower total trading cost if the spread is wider or execution is poor.
Distributions and currency exposure
Read the distribution policy and calendar in the current fund documents. Determine the currency in which you trade the ETF, the currencies of its holdings and how your broker converts cash. Currency movements can change your return even when the underlying share prices are flat in their local markets.
Risks specific to Chinese technology ETFs
Country and regulatory risk
China-focused funds face political, legal, regulatory, currency and market risks that may be greater or behave differently than risks in a diversified global fund. The SEC describes the possibility of greater government control, regulatory uncertainty, limited legal remedies, difficulty obtaining information, market closures and currency or interest-rate effects. A rule change can affect an entire industry at once, so holding dozens of companies does not remove country risk.
Technology concentration
Technology businesses can react sharply to changes in competition, product cycles, export controls, data rules, capital availability and consumer demand. KWEB concentrates on internet platforms; CQQQ and CNQQ are more technology-specific than MCHI. That concentration can amplify volatility relative to a broad equity fund. A broad fund can diversify company-specific risk, but it still remains exposed to China-wide developments.

VIE structure risk
Some U.S.-listed Chinese companies use a variable interest entity (VIE) arrangement. The SEC explains that “The U.S.-listed company often is a holding company that is formed outside of both the United States and China and may not own stock or other equity in the China-based company.” Investors may instead receive economic rights through contracts with a China-based operating company.
The SEC’s 2021 Investor Bulletin states: The Chinese government has never approved these structures.
If a contract is breached or Chinese law changes, investors may suffer significant losses and have little practical recourse. An ETF can spread this risk across issuers, but it cannot make the underlying structure disappear; review the fund’s exposure to VIEs in its current disclosures.
Currency and interest-rate effects
Returns in your home currency combine the performance of the holdings with movements in the renminbi, Hong Kong dollar, U.S. dollar or other currencies represented in the fund. Interest-rate changes can affect technology valuations and the currency value of emerging-market assets. A positive local-market move can therefore translate into a smaller gain, no gain or a loss after currency conversion.
Market access, closures and information
The SEC also identifies possible market closures and difficulty obtaining reliable information. Different holidays, trading hours, settlement systems and ownership limits can delay price discovery or make an ETF’s market price diverge from the value of its holdings. During stressed conditions, spreads can widen and an order may fill at a materially different price from the last quoted trade.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIndex and implementation risk
An index is a ruleset, not a promise of a particular return. Constituents can be added, removed or reweighted, and the ETF may use instruments or markets that introduce tracking, custody or counterparty considerations. Read the prospectus for the specific implementation method instead of assuming that every fund physically holds every company in the same proportion as its index.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling one fund “the best.” There is no universal winner: the appropriate choice depends on whether your objective is broad China, internet platforms or multi-industry technology.
- Choosing from the ticker alone. “Technology” can describe internet, hardware, industrial, health or software companies. Read the index methodology and current sector weights.
- Ignoring concentration. Count holdings and inspect top weights. Forty-seven holdings with large platform positions behaves differently from a 578-holding broad index.
- Comparing undated numbers. Fees, spreads, holdings and weights change. Keep the as-of date beside every figure and use the latest issuer document before purchase.
- Assuming an ADR is a mainland share. Confirm the listing venue, depositary structure and any conversion or custody risks described in the prospectus.
- Using a market order in a thin or stressed market without checking the spread. Review current quotes and consider a limit order when execution price matters.
- Treating diversification as protection from country risk. An ETF can reduce single-company exposure while retaining China-wide political, legal, currency and market risks.
- Making the position your whole portfolio. A single-country technology allocation is a satellite holding, not automatically a diversified investment plan.
- Buying on past performance. Historical returns are not a forecast. Base the decision on exposure, costs, risks and your time horizon.
A practical decision framework
Choose MCHI when breadth is the priority
MCHI is the logical starting point when you want one broad China equity fund and accept that technology will be mixed with other sectors. Its 578 reported holdings and 0.59% expense ratio were disclosed by BlackRock as of October 6, 2026. Confirm the current technology share and top holdings before trading.
Choose KWEB when internet platforms are the thesis
KWEB is designed for investors who specifically want China-based internet and related technology companies. Its 47 holdings and reported top positions make the concentration visible. Use the latest factsheet to see whether the current mix still matches your thesis and risk tolerance.
Choose CQQQ when you want a dedicated technology sector
CQQQ is suited to a technology-sector objective that can include multiple Chinese share classes and overseas receipts. Its 0.65% annual operating expense and at-least-90% index-investment guideline were stated by Invesco for 2026. Verify the current index constituents and how much exposure comes through each listing type.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose CNQQ when the theme spans industries
CNQQ fits an investor who defines technology broadly across automotive and transportation, service technology, electronics, health, industrial and manufacturing technology, and digital technology and software. Its 300-company universe and 0.75% annual operating expense were stated in Rayliant-ChinaAMC’s 2026 disclosure. Check the latest allocation because a six-industry theme can shift substantially over time.
What to review immediately before an order
- The current prospectus, summary prospectus and index methodology.
- The issuer’s latest holdings file, top-10 weights and sector breakdown.
- Annual expense ratio, any acquired-fund expenses and the latest tracking information.
- Live bid-ask spread, trading volume, market hours and the order type available at your broker.
- Share classes, ADR or GDR exposure, Stock Connect or other access arrangements, and any use of swaps or participatory notes.
- Distribution policy, currency handling, tax documents and account eligibility in your jurisdiction.
- Your position-size limit, review date and rebalancing rule.
These checks matter because the published figures are snapshots: KWEB’s holdings and weights were dated September 30, 2026, while MCHI’s holdings, expense ratio and spread were dated October 6, 2026. CQQQ and CNQQ expense figures were 2026 disclosures without a single holdings date stated here. Use current documents for the actual transaction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a China technology ETF remove the risk of investing in an individual Chinese company?
It can spread company-specific exposure across a basket, but it does not remove China-wide political, legal, currency, regulatory or market risks. Concentrated funds can still be heavily affected by a few large constituents.
Why might two ETFs with similar technology labels behave differently?
Their indexes may define technology differently and use different listing venues, share classes, holdings counts and weighting caps. Internet-focused KWEB, sector-focused CQQQ, multi-industry CNQQ and broad MCHI therefore respond to different business and regulatory drivers.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

No. The expense ratio is an annual operating expense deducted from fund assets. Your trade can also incur a bid-ask spread, brokerage commission, currency-conversion cost or other account charge.
