The practical way to invest in Asian technology stocks is to choose an exchange-traded fund whose mandate matches the exposure you want, confirm that your broker and country allow you to trade it, and then compare its holdings, concentration, fees, currencies and trading mechanics. A semiconductor fund, an actively managed artificial-intelligence infrastructure fund, a China technology fund and a broad Asia ex-Japan ETF can behave very differently, even though all may be described as “Asian technology” exposure.
The examples below are educational, not personal investment advice. ETF availability, account eligibility, withholding taxes, capital-gains treatment and reporting rules depend on your residence, tax status and brokerage account. Read the current prospectus, key-information document and exchange data before placing an order.
Start by defining the exposure you want
“Asian technology” is not a standard asset class. Before looking at tickers, decide which economic activity and countries you want your money to follow.

Artificial-intelligence infrastructure
An AI-infrastructure mandate may include advanced semiconductor foundries and packaging, high-bandwidth memory, substrates and interconnects, optical networking, data-center power and cooling, AI-server integration, chipmaking equipment and semiconductor materials. KraneShares Asia AI Technology ETF (KAIT) uses this type of thematic definition. Its SEC-filed summary prospectus says that, under normal circumstances, at least 80% of net assets plus borrowings for investment purposes are invested in securities of Asia AI Technology companies and economically similar instruments: SEC summary prospectus.

Semiconductors
A semiconductor ETF is narrower. It may concentrate in chip designers, foundries, equipment makers and materials suppliers rather than the wider software, internet, consumer-electronics and digital-services industries. Global X Asia Semiconductor ETF (ticker 3119) seeks to track the FactSet Asia Semiconductor Index, while Global X Asia Semiconductor Index ETF (ticker ACHP) seeks to track the Mirae Asset Asia Semiconductor Index. The two funds therefore should not be assumed to hold the same companies or weights.
China technology
A country-focused technology fund can provide concentrated exposure to Chinese companies while excluding much of Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and India. Global X China Tech ETF (ticker 380A) seeks to correspond generally, before fees and expenses, to the Hang Seng TECH Index converted to Japanese yen and aims to invest in 30 technology-related companies listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
Broad Asia ex-Japan equities
A broad regional ETF can provide a diversified country allocation with technology companies among its holdings, but its sector weight is not the same thing as a technology mandate. The iShares MSCI All Country Asia ex Japan ETF (AAXJ) is an example. Its geographic allocation, rather than its technology-sector allocation, was reported by BlackRock on October 9, 2026.

How to choose an ETF step by step
- Write the desired exposure in one sentence. For example: “I want a semiconductor supply-chain fund,” “I want AI data-center infrastructure,” “I want China technology,” or “I want broad Asian equities with technology included.” If you cannot state the exposure, you cannot test whether the fund delivers it.
- Read the mandate and benchmark. Check whether the fund is active or index-based, the minimum-investment policy, eligible countries, security types and rebalancing rules. A broad regional name does not prove broad technology exposure.
- Inspect holdings and concentration. Record the number of holdings, top-ten weight, largest country weights, sector weights and whether Japan is included. Compare current weights with your intended exposure because indexes and active portfolios change.
- Check the listing and investor eligibility. The examples trade on the NYSE, Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Toronto Stock Exchange and Tokyo Stock Exchange. Your broker must support the specific exchange and share class, and local rules may restrict access to foreign-listed funds or require additional disclosures.
- Separate the currencies. Note the currency in which shares trade, the fund’s base currency and the currencies of its underlying holdings. A yen-traded fund can still own Hong Kong-listed companies; changing the trading currency does not remove the economic currency risk.
- Compare the correct cost measure. Put management fees, ongoing charges and gross and net expense ratios in separate columns. Ask whether a net expense figure depends on a temporary waiver, whether sales taxes are extra and whether other costs such as brokerage commissions, spreads, conversion charges and securities-lending or derivative expenses apply.
- Evaluate trading conditions. Review average volume, quoted spread, market price versus NAV, creation and redemption arrangements and the fund’s age and assets. A low stated fee does not compensate for consistently expensive execution.
- Read the risk and tax sections. Confirm how dividends, withholding taxes, derivatives, securities lending, foreign exchange and distributions are treated in your jurisdiction and account type. No general article can determine your personal tax result.
- Place an appropriately controlled order. After confirming the ticker, exchange, currency and share class, many investors use a limit order rather than accepting an unknown market price, particularly when spreads are wide or the local market is closed. Check the order preview for currency conversion and commissions before submitting it.
- Keep records and review the thesis. Save the confirmation, cost basis, distributions and tax documents. Recheck the mandate, holdings, fees and liquidity periodically instead of assuming that a fund remains unchanged.
Understanding the five examples in more detail
KAIT: actively managed AI infrastructure
KAIT is listed on the NYSE and is designed around the adviser’s Asia AI Technology definition rather than a conventional broad-market sector classification. The 80% policy is a minimum under normal circumstances, not a promise that every holding is a pure-play chip company. The fund’s stated geographic opportunity set includes Taiwan, South Korea, Japan and China.
Issuer data dated October 12, 2026 reported 1.00% gross annual operating expenses and 0.65% net expenses. The same page reported inception on August 19, 2026, net assets of $5,343,659 and a 30-day median bid-ask spread of 0.35%. Those figures describe a newly launched, relatively small product at that date; they do not guarantee future assets, volume, spread or performance. Check the latest data before trading.
3119: Hong Kong-listed semiconductor exposure
3119 seeks to track the FactSet Asia Semiconductor Index and describes exposure to Asian semiconductor design, foundries, equipment and materials. Its issuer page dated October 12, 2026 listed 0.68% ongoing charges, HKD as the trading currency and RMB as the base currency.

ACHP: Toronto-listed semiconductor index fund
ACHP seeks to track the Mirae Asset Asia Semiconductor Index and is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The issuer lists a 0.49% management fee plus applicable sales tax and describes the fund as high risk. It launched on September 21, 2026, so its short history gives investors limited live evidence about tracking, spreads and secondary-market liquidity.
AAXJ: broad regional exposure
AAXJ is a regional, not technology-only, route. BlackRock reported the following geographic market-value weights on October 9, 2026: Taiwan 33.05%, South Korea 23.25%, China 21.96%, India 11.70%, Hong Kong 3.50%, Singapore 3.46%, Thailand 1.02%, other 1.72% and cash or derivatives 0.35%. These are country allocations, not technology-sector weights, and they can change. Use the current holdings file to determine how much technology the fund actually contains.
380A: Japan-listed China technology
380A trades in Japanese yen on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and seeks to correspond generally, before fees and expenses, to the Hang Seng TECH Index converted to JPY. The stated portfolio target is 30 technology-related companies listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Global X Japan reported a 0.4125% management fee, or 0.375% excluding tax, with data dated October 9, 2026.

Because the fund is China-focused, its risks differ from those of a pan-Asian portfolio. A yen listing may be convenient for some investors, but it does not eliminate movements in the yen, Hong Kong dollar or the currencies of the companies’ revenues and costs.

Fees, currency and tracking: what the headline price leaves out
Fees are not directly comparable labels
An operating-expense ratio generally describes fund-level expenses charged against assets; a management fee is one component of a fund’s cost; ongoing charges may follow a local disclosure convention; and a net expense ratio may reflect a waiver or reimbursement. Compare like with like, identify whether taxes are included and read the latest annual and interim reports for changes.
Trading currency is not currency hedging
The currency shown beside a ticker is the currency used to buy and sell that share class. It does not necessarily match the fund’s base currency or the currencies of its holdings. Currency gains and losses can affect your return even when the underlying share prices are unchanged in local terms. A fund must explicitly describe hedging for you to treat it as a hedged product; do not infer hedging from the exchange listing.
Tracking difference can exceed the stated fee
Index funds can lag their benchmarks because of fees, taxes, trading costs, withholding taxes, sampling, cash balances and corporate-action timing. Synthetic replication adds derivative pricing and counterparty considerations. Compare historical tracking difference and the methodology in the current documents rather than assuming that the lowest fee will produce the closest result.
Trading mechanics that matter in Asian markets
Bid-ask spread and market hours
The bid is the highest displayed buying price and the ask is the lowest displayed selling price. The difference is an immediate trading cost. Asian exchanges operate in different time zones, so the ETF may be trading while important underlying markets are closed, or vice versa. In those periods, market makers may widen quotes and the ETF price may move away from an indicative NAV.

Premiums and discounts to NAV
NAV is the calculated per-share value of the portfolio, while the exchange price is set by buyers and sellers. Creation and redemption mechanisms usually help keep the two close, but stressed markets, closed underlying exchanges, currency controls, thin liquidity or derivative limitations can produce meaningful premiums or discounts. Check both the current premium or discount and the fund’s historical range.
Fund size and history
Assets, volume and age help you judge how much trading evidence exists. They are not guarantees. A new fund can grow quickly, and a large fund can still have a wide spread in a difficult market. KAIT’s October 12, 2026 asset and spread figures and ACHP’s September 21, 2026 launch date illustrate why the age and size of each product belong in the comparison.
Risks specific to Asian technology ETFs
- Technology and semiconductor cycles: chip demand, customer capital expenditure and inventory corrections can produce sharp earnings and price swings.
- Obsolescence: products, manufacturing processes and computing architectures can become outdated quickly, pressuring companies that appeared competitive a year earlier.
- Country and regulatory concentration: rules on data, antitrust, exports, listings, foreign ownership and national security can affect particular markets or companies.
- Emerging-market trading risk: liquidity, settlement, custody, legal protection, inflation, taxation and capital-flow conditions may differ from those in the investor’s home market.
- Currency risk: returns can change because of movements among the investor’s currency, the ETF’s trading currency, the fund’s base currency and the currencies of underlying holdings.
- Political and geopolitical risk: diplomatic disputes, sanctions, elections and changes in trade policy can affect supply chains and market access.
- Derivative and counterparty risk: synthetic funds can depend on banks or other counterparties; losses may arise from default, collateral, valuation or contract liquidity.
- Premium, discount and volatility risk: an ETF can trade materially above or below NAV, especially when underlying markets are closed or stressed.
- Concentration risk: a fund with a few large semiconductor or internet companies can be far less diversified than its regional label suggests.
A practical decision framework
Choose a focused AI-infrastructure fund only when you accept thematic concentration and can explain why its defined supply-chain segments are the exposure you want. Choose a semiconductor fund when you specifically want chip-industry participation and understand its capital-spending cycle. Choose a China technology fund when country concentration and China-specific regulation are acceptable. Choose a broad Asia ex-Japan fund when regional diversification matters more than a precise technology allocation.

Then test the fund against that checklist using current holdings and documents. If the fund fails one of those tests, a familiar ticker or attractive recent performance is not a substitute for a suitable mandate.
Before you buy: a final checklist
- Is the fund’s mandate actually AI infrastructure, semiconductors, China technology or broad Asia?
- What index or active process determines holdings?
- How many securities are held, and what percentage is in the largest country and largest companies?
- Which exchange, ticker, share class and trading currency does your broker support?
- What are the current management fee, ongoing charge, gross expense ratio, net expense ratio and applicable taxes?
- Does the fund use physical or synthetic replication, securities lending or derivatives?
- What are the current assets, volume, spread and premium or discount to NAV?
- How will dividends, withholding tax, capital gains and foreign-currency transactions be reported in your jurisdiction?
- Does the investment still fit your written objective after reviewing the latest prospectus?
Bottom line
There is no single “Asian technology ETF.” KAIT targets a newly launched, actively managed AI-technology theme; 3119 and ACHP focus on semiconductor industries through different indexes and exchanges; 380A concentrates on 30 China technology companies; and AAXJ offers broad Asia ex-Japan country exposure whose technology weight must be checked rather than assumed. Match the mandate to your objective, verify cross-border access and taxes with your broker and tax adviser, and evaluate fees, currencies, liquidity, concentration and fund structure together before investing.
