Investing in AI semiconductors starts with choosing the exposure you actually want: accelerator designers, custom-chip and networking suppliers, foundries, semiconductor-equipment makers, or a basket fund. Samsung is not interchangeable with any of these businesses. Their customers, capital requirements, manufacturing arrangements, margins and risks differ.
Use company filings and fund prospectuses to compare operating results, customer concentration, supply-chain dependence, competitive durability and valuation assumptions. Treat this as general investment research, not a personal recommendation: whether any security fits depends on your objectives, time horizon, tax position, country and risk capacity.
What “AI semiconductor exposure” actually includes
Artificial-intelligence computing is an industry value chain rather than a single stock category. A company can benefit from AI spending while earning most of its revenue from other products, or it can be exposed to the same spending cycle through a very different business model.

Accelerated-computing designers
NVIDIA and AMD design graphics processors, accelerators and related data-center products. Their economics depend on product performance, software ecosystems, customer deployment plans, pricing and the cost of obtaining advanced manufacturing and packaging. Both compete in data-center markets, and both describe competition from chips designed inside major cloud companies.

Custom silicon, connectivity and infrastructure
Broadcom is a semiconductor supplier named in AMD’s competition disclosures and illustrates a different route to AI exposure: custom silicon, networking and other infrastructure components can benefit when data centers expand even when a customer is not buying a general-purpose accelerator. Revenue mix and customer relationships must be examined rather than inferred from the word “AI.”
Foundry manufacturing
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) manufactures chips designed by other companies. Foundry demand, process leadership, capacity utilization, pricing and capital expenditure drive its results. AMD states that it relies on TSMC for wafers made on advanced nodes, while NVIDIA describes reliance on external foundries including TSMC and Samsung. A foundry therefore has a different risk profile from a fabless designer: it spends heavily on factories and equipment and serves many design customers, but it remains exposed to semiconductor cycles and capacity decisions.
Semiconductor equipment
ASML represents equipment exposure rather than chip design or wafer manufacturing. Equipment makers sell the tools used to build advanced chips, so their order cycles, customer concentration and geographic controls differ from those of designers and foundries. The filings reviewed for this article did not establish current ASML operating figures; use its latest reports before making a comparison.
Basket funds
A sector ETF can spread exposure across several companies, but it does not eliminate semiconductor cyclicality or concentration. An ETF’s actual holdings, index rules and top-position weights determine what you own, not its thematic name.
Samsung versus the main alternatives
Samsung combines several businesses, including memory, logic and foundry operations. That makes it an important reference point, but not a clean proxy for every AI-semiconductor thesis. Compare the business you are buying with the exposure you intend to obtain.
| Exposure | Representative examples | Primary economic drivers | Key questions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accelerator design | NVIDIA, AMD | Data-center demand, product cadence, software ecosystem, pricing and supply availability | How much growth depends on a few customers, and can customers design acceptable alternatives? |
| Custom silicon and networking | Broadcom | Customer-specific designs, networking upgrades, infrastructure spending and program wins | Are contracts durable, and how concentrated are programs and customers? |
| Foundry manufacturing | TSMC; Samsung’s foundry business | Process technology, wafer pricing, utilization, capacity and capital expenditure | What node, packaging and geographic capacity constraints could limit growth? |
| Equipment | ASML | Chipmakers’ capital budgets, tool demand, service revenue and export controls | How cyclical are orders, and which customers and regions drive them? |
| Basket fund | Global X AI Semiconductor & Quantum ETF | Index composition, constituent performance, rebalancing and fund expenses | How concentrated are the top holdings, and what does the current prospectus disclose? |
These are comparison categories, not equivalent securities. A designer’s gross margin and research spending cannot be interpreted in the same way as a foundry’s utilization and factory investment. Start by defining the exposure, then select metrics that fit that business model.

A step-by-step process for researching a stock
- Define the thesis. Write one sentence identifying the expected source of returns: rising accelerator shipments, custom-chip programs, foundry wafer demand, equipment orders or diversified sector exposure. If the sentence includes several unrelated businesses, split it into separate theses.
- Map revenue by segment. Read the latest annual and quarterly filings and record data-center, gaming, automotive, communications, memory, foundry, equipment and other segments separately where the company reports them. Do not treat total revenue growth as AI growth without evidence that the relevant segment is responsible.
- Measure operating performance. Build a time series for revenue, gross margin, operating margin, operating cash flow and free cash flow. Note whether growth is organic, acquisition-driven, volume-driven, price-driven or helped by currency.
- Identify customers and spending concentration. Record disclosed customer concentrations, major-cloud exposure, distributor dependence and customer capital-spending plans. Consider whether a small number of buyers can negotiate lower prices or postpone orders.
- Trace manufacturing and packaging. Determine which products use external foundries, which process nodes and packaging technologies they require, and where capacity or yield constraints could arise. For advanced-node products, AMD specifically identifies reliance on TSMC.
- Test the competitive position. Compare product performance, launch cadence, software and developer support, interoperability, switching costs, patents and pricing. Include internally developed chips at large cloud providers in the competitive analysis rather than comparing only listed chip companies.
- Value several scenarios. Model at least a conservative, central and optimistic case for revenue growth, margins, reinvestment and the valuation multiple. A strong business can be a poor investment if its current price requires unusually favorable outcomes.
- Define what would falsify the thesis. Set observable checks such as a loss of a major program, falling utilization, margin compression, delayed product launches, rising inventory or customer-built substitutes. Review those checks after every filing.
Metrics that matter for individual companies
Revenue growth by business and customer
Use segment growth and end-market exposure rather than a headline “AI revenue” estimate. A company can report rapid data-center growth while another segment contracts, leaving total-company economics very different from the theme’s momentum. Track sequential as well as year-over-year changes because semiconductor demand can turn quickly.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Customer concentration matters even when total demand is rising. If a few cloud or systems customers represent a large share of sales, a change in one customer’s inventory, architecture or capital budget can affect revenue, pricing and working capital. Read concentration disclosures and the discussion of major customers in the risk factors.
Gross margin and operating margin
Gross margin shows pricing power and product mix after manufacturing costs; operating margin also captures research, software, sales and administration. Compare margins by segment when disclosed and look for explanations of changes. A high-margin accelerator business may support heavy software investment, while a foundry’s margin is more sensitive to utilization and depreciation.
Do not annualize one unusually strong quarter without checking supply constraints, launch timing, rebates, stock-based compensation, inventory charges and customer mix. Margin expansion based on temporary scarcity is less durable than expansion supported by a broad product and software advantage.
Cash flow and capital intensity
Operating cash flow reveals whether accounting earnings are converting into cash. Subtract capital expenditures to estimate free cash flow, while recognizing that a growth company may deliberately reinvest heavily. Foundries require large, recurring factory and equipment investments; fabless designers generally have lower physical capital needs but may spend substantially on engineering, software and inventory commitments.
Check working-capital movements. Receivables, inventory and supplier prepayments can consume cash before revenue appears. Rising inventory alongside slowing orders can signal a correction, although a new product launch can produce the same pattern for benign reasons.

Manufacturing, packaging and supply constraints
Record the foundries, packaging providers and critical components each product depends on. AMD describes reliance on external foundries, including TSMC for advanced-node wafers. NVIDIA describes reliance on external foundries including TSMC and Samsung. Those relationships can provide access to leading capacity, but they also create exposure to allocation, yield, lead-time, geopolitical and pricing risks.
Ask whether a product can be moved to another foundry or node, how long qualification would take and whether advanced packaging is a bottleneck. A chip may be designed and sold successfully yet remain supply-constrained because wafers, packaging capacity or high-bandwidth memory is unavailable.
Product cadence, software and ecosystem
AI accelerators compete on the complete platform, not only on theoretical compute. Examine release timing, software tools, libraries, developer adoption, compatibility and support. A technically strong chip can struggle if customers must rewrite applications or cannot obtain reliable software updates. Conversely, an established ecosystem may support pricing, but it also requires continual investment to defend.

Valuation and scenario analysis
Compare enterprise value or market capitalization with multiple plausible earnings and cash-flow paths. Useful approaches include price-to-earnings, price-to-free-cash-flow, enterprise-value-to-sales and a discounted-cash-flow model, but none is meaningful without assumptions about growth, margins, dilution, capital expenditure and terminal value.
| Scenario | Operating assumptions to vary | What to examine |
|---|---|---|
| Conservative | Slower AI adoption, customer-built chips, pricing pressure and normal semiconductor-cycle utilization | Whether cash generation and balance-sheet strength remain adequate |
| Central | Continued demand growth with moderating margins and scheduled capacity additions | Whether the current price is reasonable without heroic assumptions |
| Optimistic | Strong customer spending, sustained pricing power, rapid product execution and high utilization | How much of this outcome is already embedded in the share price |
Use a range rather than a single target price. If small changes in growth or margin assumptions produce very different values, the investment is highly sensitive to expectations.
Risks that can break an AI-semiconductor thesis
Semiconductor cyclicality
AMD’s 2025 Form 10-K describes an industry exposed to cycles and shifts in supply and demand. Orders can accelerate during shortages and fall when customers digest inventory. Fixed factory costs make utilization especially important for manufacturers, while designers can face abrupt price and inventory pressure.

Competition from customers and rivals
NVIDIA identifies competition from other chip suppliers and from cloud companies developing chips for their own platforms. Custom accelerators can reduce a cloud provider’s dependence on merchant chips, alter purchasing leverage or limit the addressable market. Broadcom’s presence in custom silicon and networking illustrates why the competitive set extends beyond traditional accelerator vendors.
Rapid technological change
A product lead can narrow quickly when a rival introduces better performance, efficiency, memory bandwidth or software support. A company must fund continuous research and development while avoiding products that become obsolete before customers recover their investment. Product delays can shift a complete system purchase into a later reporting period.
Foundry and packaging dependence
External manufacturing creates exposure to capacity allocation, process transitions, yields, packaging availability, export controls and disruptions. AMD and NVIDIA both describe foundry relationships that include TSMC; NVIDIA also names Samsung. These dependencies can affect volumes, availability, gross margin and launch timing.
Customer concentration and spending reversals
Large cloud and systems customers may represent substantial demand, but they can delay projects, redesign hardware or negotiate aggressively. A customer’s own return-on-investment calculation matters: if AI infrastructure produces lower utilization or revenue than expected, spending can slow even while long-term AI use continues.
Expectation and valuation risk
Share prices can already assume exceptional AI growth, sustained margins and successful product launches. A slowdown or weaker-than-expected return on customer infrastructure spending may compress a valuation even if AI adoption continues. This is an analysis of expectation risk, not a forecast of any company’s results.

Geopolitical and supply-chain disruption
Advanced semiconductors cross borders multiple times. Trade restrictions, regional concentration, transportation interruptions and allocation decisions can affect both supply and demand. Read each issuer’s current risk factors because exposure changes as products and manufacturing locations change.

Using an AI semiconductor ETF
The Global X AI Semiconductor & Quantum ETF’s SEC-filed summary prospectus states that the fund seeks, before fees and expenses, results that correspond generally to the price and yield performance of its underlying index. That objective describes a tracking strategy; it does not guarantee diversification or positive returns.
What to check before buying
- Current holdings and weights: identify the largest positions and the percentage they represent together. A fund with dozens of names can still be dominated by a few companies.
- Expense ratio: record the current annual expense figure in the prospectus and consider its effect over your holding period. The reviewed materials did not establish a current expense-ratio comparison.
- Index methodology: read eligibility rules, weighting limits, rebalancing frequency, definitions of AI or semiconductor exposure and rules for additions or deletions.
- Liquidity and trading: examine bid-ask spreads, average volume, assets and the difference between market price and net asset value. These can matter when entering or exiting.
- Prospectus risks: review concentration, sector, small-company, foreign-market, currency, technology, semiconductor-cycle and tracking risks.
- Tax and account treatment: check the rules in your country and account type; an ETF’s structure does not make tax treatment universal.
Do not infer current holdings or fees from an old article or a fund name. Download the latest prospectus and holdings file on the day you evaluate the fund.
How to interpret TSMC’s reported growth
TSMC’s 2025 annual report recorded 35.9% year-over-year revenue growth in U.S.-dollar terms and described AI-market developments as positive during that year. This is a company-reported historical result and management commentary, not a forecast and not evidence that the shares are undervalued.

Build one row per company or fund and fill every cell from the latest filing, earnings release or prospectus. If a figure is not disclosed, mark it “not stated” and investigate why rather than estimating precision.
| Category | Questions to record |
|---|---|
| Business model | Designer, custom silicon/networking supplier, foundry, equipment maker or fund? |
| Revenue | Which segments and end markets grew, and what share is attributable to data-center or AI-related demand? |
| Profitability | What are gross margin, operating margin and their main changes? |
| Cash generation | What are operating cash flow, capital expenditure, free cash flow and working-capital trends? |
| Customers | How concentrated are sales, and what spending or in-house-chip plans are disclosed? |
| Manufacturing | Which foundries, nodes, packaging providers and regions are required? |
| Competition | Which merchant suppliers, cloud-designed chips or alternative architectures threaten demand? |
| Valuation | What price-to-earnings, price-to-free-cash-flow or enterprise-value-to-sales ratios result under each scenario? |
| Fund structure | For an ETF, what are holdings, top-position concentration, fees, index rules, liquidity and risks? |
Monitoring after an investment decision
Monitoring should test the thesis, not encourage daily trading. Set a review schedule around quarterly results and annual filings.
- Update segment revenue, margins, cash flow and capital expenditure.
- Check inventory, receivables, backlog or order commentary for signs of a cycle turn.
- Review customer concentration and cloud capital-spending disclosures.
- Track product launches, software releases, competitive benchmarks and qualification timelines.
- Look for changes in foundry, packaging, export-control or geographic disclosures.
- For an ETF, download the latest holdings, weights, expense information and prospectus before each major review.
- Recalculate valuation under the same conservative, central and optimistic cases; do not quietly raise assumptions just because the share price rose.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using “AI” as a business description: read segment disclosures instead of relying on a label.
- Treating Samsung and every alternative as equivalents: memory, foundry, accelerator and equipment economics are different.
- Ignoring customer-built chips: include internal cloud silicon in the competitive analysis.
- Confusing revenue growth with shareholder returns: valuation, dilution, capital spending and margins determine returns as well.
- Assuming an ETF is automatically diversified: inspect top holdings and index concentration.
- Projecting one year of growth indefinitely: model semiconductor cycles and changing utilization.
- Mixing historical facts and forecasts: label company-reported results, management commentary and your own assumptions separately.
- Buying before checking market access: confirm that the security, exchange, currency and account treatment are available in your jurisdiction and understand all transaction costs.
Bottom line
Choose the AI-semiconductor exposure first, then compare the businesses on segment growth, margins, cash generation, customers, manufacturing dependencies, competitive durability and scenario-based valuation. NVIDIA and AMD offer accelerator-design exposure; Broadcom illustrates custom silicon and networking; TSMC offers foundry exposure; ASML represents equipment; and an ETF provides a rules-based basket whose concentration and costs must be verified in its current prospectus. Cyclicality, customer-built chips, supply constraints and optimistic expectations can impair any thesis, so keep historical results such as TSMC’s 35.9% 2025 revenue growth separate from forecasts and valuation judgments.
