Fitness trackers estimate how many calories you burn; they do not measure that total directly. Their estimates can vary with the device, activity and test conditions, so treat the number on your screen as a rough guide—not a precise account of a workout or your daily energy expenditure.
How accurate are fitness trackers for calories burned?
There is no single accuracy figure that applies to every tracker or wearer. A 2024 umbrella review summarized a meta-analysis of 64 studies in which energy-expenditure errors in the underlying studies ranged from −21.27% to 14.76%. That spread describes variation across study findings; it is not an error band you can apply to your own watch or workout. The umbrella review also noted substantial differences among protocols, reference methods, devices and outcomes, making a universal device-wide verdict inappropriate. The 2024 umbrella review
A separate 2020 meta-analysis covered 60 studies and 104 effect sizes. It found that accuracy varied by activity and that results for many monitors were highly heterogeneous. In other words, a device’s estimate may perform differently from one kind of movement to another, and results from one study do not necessarily predict what a particular person’s tracker will show. The 2020 meta-analysis
Why the activity and testing method matter
Movement type changes the estimate
Trackers use sensor data and algorithms to estimate energy expenditure. Combining heart-rate or heat sensing with accelerometry reduced error in most activity types in the meta-analysis, but accuracy still varied by activity. More sensors therefore do not guarantee a dependable calorie number for every task. The 2020 meta-analysis

Lab tests and daily-life tests measure different things
Researchers validate a tracker by comparing its estimate with a criterion method. Indirect calorimetry is commonly used during structured laboratory activity. Doubly labelled water is used to assess energy expenditure in free-living conditions. The methods have different practical constraints, and a result from a controlled lab session should not be treated as proof of accuracy during ordinary daily life. Why calorie estimates during strength training deserve extra caution
Resistance exercise can involve short, intense efforts and anaerobic energy contributions. A 2024 scoping review noted that indirect calorimetry alone may miss the glycolytic contribution, which complicates validation as well as the wearable estimate itself. Among the five wearable validation studies included in that review, four found poor correlations or significant differences compared with indirect calorimetry. Reported mean absolute percentage errors ranged from 15.1% to 57.0% in those study settings. The 2024 resistance-exercise review

The monitors in those studies both under- and overestimated expenditure. The findings justify skepticism about precise lifting calorie counts; they do not show that every tracker always undercounts strength training.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat to do with the calorie number on your tracker
- Use it as an estimate. It can be a convenient activity log, but the evidence does not support treating the displayed total as a direct measurement.
- Keep activity context in mind. Do not assume an estimate that seems plausible for one activity is equally dependable for another.
- Be cautious with lifting totals. Wearable validation evidence for resistance exercise is limited and variable.
- Do not apply a made-up correction. These reviews do not establish a reliable personal adjustment percentage or identify a current tracker that is universally accurate for calorie estimates.
What the available studies can—and cannot—tell you
The cited reviews cover multiple device models and generations rather than establishing a current model-by-model ranking. The 2020 meta-analysis searched studies only through 2017, and device hardware and algorithms may have changed since the tested versions. Without validation of a specific current model under relevant conditions, the findings cannot show that newer devices have resolved the measurement limitations—or tell you exactly how far your own reading is off.
