Interpret an isothermal microcalorimetry (IMC) trace as a time-aligned record of heat flow, not as a standalone safety verdict. The useful question is whether the trace changes in a repeatable way during charging, discharging, and rest, and whether that change differs from a matched control run under the same conditions. A rising baseline or new, recurring exotherms can signal increasing parasitic activity, but the trace alone cannot prove lithium plating, a dendrite, an internal short circuit, or imminent thermal runaway.

Reliable interpretation requires the cell chemistry and format, state of charge, temperature, aging history, current and voltage program, rest periods, mounting, calibration, and instrument noise. The often-cited overcharge demonstration from TA Instruments used only two NMC/graphite coin cells; its numerical observations are useful examples, not universal alarm limits.

What isothermal microcalorimetry measures in a battery test

In IMC, a sample is held at an essentially constant temperature while the instrument records heat flow over time. When a battery is connected to a cycler, the heat-flow record can be placed on the same time axis as current, voltage, charge, discharge, and open-circuit rest. That alignment lets you ask when a thermal event occurs and whether it repeats with a particular electrochemical step.

The method is sensitive to small thermal effects that may appear before a distinctive voltage signature. It can therefore expose parasitic reactions while a cell still appears electrically normal. The measured signal is the combined thermal result of everything occurring in the cell and its test assembly: reversible electrochemical heat, irreversible reaction heat, side reactions, heat transfer through the mounting, and instrument effects. A changed signal is evidence that the thermal balance changed; it is not a unique chemical label.

IMC is especially useful for controlled cycling at a fixed temperature. It addresses evolving behavior during normal or intentionally varied electrochemical operation. It does not replace abuse testing designed to drive a cell into self-heating and runaway.

Prepare the trace before interpreting it

Document the test context

Record the exact chemistry, electrode formulation if known, cell format, nominal capacity, state of charge, temperature set point, aging or storage history, current and voltage limits, rest durations, sample mounting, and instrument configuration. Include whether the cell was fresh, preconditioned, or previously stressed. Traces from different protocols should not be overlaid and treated as directly comparable simply because the cells share a nominal chemistry.

Verify sign, units, and timing

Confirm whether positive heat flow means heat released by the cell or heat absorbed in your software. Check the displayed units and time base, and verify that the cycler and calorimeter clocks are aligned. A sign inversion or time offset can make an endothermic rest feature look exothermic or associate a peak with the wrong current step.

Check equilibration and baseline stability

Allow the cell and holder to reach the intended thermal equilibrium before assigning meaning to early drift. Inspect a blank or reference run when your instrument procedure calls for one. Baseline wander during equilibration, a loose thermal contact, or a changing laboratory temperature can mimic a slowly increasing reaction signal. There is no universal IMC noise or alarm specification established across instruments, so use the calibration and data-processing procedure for the specific system.

A step-by-step workflow for reading an IMC result

  1. Mark every electrochemical event. On one plot, label the start and end of each charge, discharge, constant-voltage hold, and rest. Add voltage and current, not just elapsed time. A heat-flow feature that occurs only during a current transition has a different interpretation from one that persists through an open-circuit rest.
  2. Establish a matched reference. Run a normal or otherwise well-characterized cell with the same temperature, mounting, cycle program, and analysis settings. The reference shows which features are repeatable consequences of the protocol rather than signs of degradation.
  3. Separate the first cycle from later cycles. Formation and interphase reactions can produce substantial early heat. Compare the first cycle with subsequent cycles before calling a first-cycle peak an anomaly.
  4. Inspect baseline level and slope. Ask whether heat flow returns to a similar level after each cycle. A progressively elevated baseline, especially during periods that previously looked quiet, indicates additional ongoing heat generation but does not identify its chemistry.
  5. Look for reproducible peaks and exotherms. Note their timing, amplitude, duration, and recurrence. A single small transient close to the measured noise floor is weak evidence. A feature that appears in the same electrochemical window, grows over repeated cycles, and is absent from the control is more consequential.
  6. Compare cycle-to-cycle changes. Determine whether a nominal cell settles into a repeatable profile while a stressed cell diverges. Record both amplitude and frequency: new events between established peaks can be as informative as a larger existing peak.
  7. Corroborate with independent evidence. Examine voltage relaxation or drop, coulombic efficiency, capacity loss, parasitic heat calculations, impedance, post-test inspection, gas or pressure observations, or another method appropriate to the question. Assign a mechanism only when the thermal pattern and independent evidence support the same explanation.
  8. State the scope of the conclusion. Report the chemistry, format, temperature, state of charge, aging, protocol, and instrument conditions with the interpretation. A finding such as “this cell diverged from its matched control during overcharge” is defensible; “IMC detects internal shorts three days before failure” is not a general conclusion.

What common trace patterns can—and cannot—mean

Observed pattern Reasonable interpretation What it does not prove
Stable, repeatable profile that diminishes after the first cycle Early formation or conditioning reactions are settling under this protocol. That the cell is safe under every voltage, temperature, or aging condition.
Baseline remains elevated between electrochemical events Continuing heat generation, potentially from parasitic reactions or another persistent process. A specific reaction such as lithium plating or an internal short.
New small exotherms recur in later cycles An emerging process is synchronized with the cycle and may be accumulating. Dendrite formation, because IMC does not image dendrites.
Peak amplitude or frequency increases cycle to cycle Increasing thermal activity or instability relative to the reference. A universal threshold for runaway or a guaranteed time to failure.
Heat flow changes only during a current transition The event may be linked to that electrochemical step, switching transient, or reversible heat. That a failure reaction continues during rest.
Signal is comparable to the stated short-term noise The feature may be unresolved without averaging, replication, or improved setup control. A real chemical event, unless independently corroborated.
Thermal divergence precedes an electrical anomaly IMC may be more sensitive to an evolving process in this setup. That the same lead time applies to other cells or instruments.

The published overcharge example: how to use its numbers correctly

TA Instruments application note MC179 (copyright 2025), authored by Jeremy May, PhD, compares two NMC/graphite coin cells. One cell was cycled within its standard voltage window. The other was overcharged by 50 mV during a narrow-cycle phase. The control upper limit was 4.20 V; the overcharged cell reached 4.25 V.

Both cells produced elevated heat flow during the first cycle, which the authors attribute to solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation. The nominal cell then developed a repeatable profile whose magnitude declined with cycling. The overcharged cell instead developed small exotherms and an increasingly elevated heat-flow pattern. In the authors’ interpretation, the divergence was consistent with lithium plating, electrolyte reactions, and increasing instability. Those mechanisms were inferred from the overcharge protocol and thermogram pattern; the trace was not direct imaging of plated lithium or a dendrite.

Observation in MC179 How to report it Why it is not a universal limit
50 mV overcharge The tested upper limit was 4.25 V instead of the 4.20 V control limit. It came from one overcharge protocol and two coin cells.
Approximately 1 μW small exotherms Small recurring exotherms were about 1 μW in that setup. Signal magnitude depends on instrument, mounting, cell, and processing.
Approximately ±100 nW short-term instrument noise The application note reports this noise level for its instrument and conditions. It is not a specification for every IMC system.
Roughly double heat-flow magnitude over one charge cycle The overcharged cell showed about twice the heat-flow magnitude during a charge cycle. It is an observed change, not a general warning threshold.
About three days earlier Instability appeared roughly three days before electrochemical data gave strong evidence of an internal short in that experiment. IMC does not universally predict an internal short three days in advance.

The application note reports that electrochemical evidence for an internal short appeared only after the heat-flow instability had become apparent. That sequence illustrates why synchronized thermal and electrical records are valuable. It does not establish that every internal short has the same thermal precursor, that every precursor lasts three days, or that a 50 mV overcharge is required.

“The electrochemical data showed no characteristic differences until the internal short occurred, but the heat flow displayed significant levels of instability and side reactions from the onset of overcharging.”

— Jeremy May, PhD, TA Instruments application note MC179 (2025)

How to discuss lithium plating, dendrites, and internal shorts responsibly

Lithium plating can be favored by conditions such as aggressive charging, low temperature, high state of charge, or an overvoltage condition, but an IMC trace cannot identify plating by itself. Plating may be a plausible hypothesis when the protocol creates a plating risk and the heat pattern is accompanied by changes in coulombic efficiency, voltage behavior, capacity, or post-test evidence.

Dendrites and internal shorts require even greater caution. A heat-flow instability can be compatible with a developing short, and a later electrical signature may strengthen that interpretation. However, the calorimeter does not visually resolve a dendrite. Use microscopy, teardown, electrical isolation tests, or another appropriate method if the distinction matters.

Thermal runaway is a still stronger claim. A rising baseline or recurring exotherms indicate increased thermal activity; they do not demonstrate that the cell has crossed a runaway onset or will inevitably do so. Reserve runaway language for evidence that includes the relevant abuse conditions and thermal criteria.

IMC, ARC, and fractional thermal-runaway calorimetry answer different questions

Choosing the method starts with the safety question. IMC follows heat-flow behavior during controlled electrochemical cycling at an essentially constant temperature. Accelerating rate calorimetry (ARC) generally uses heat-wait-seek or related thermal-abuse procedures to characterize self-heating and runaway. Fractional calorimetry asks how much energy leaves through the casing versus vented effluents during a runaway event.

Method Primary question Typical information Key limitation
Isothermal microcalorimetry What heat-flow changes occur while a cell cycles at controlled temperature? Baseline drift, cycle-linked heat, parasitic activity, recurring exotherms, and divergence from a control. Mechanism is not unique; it does not by itself establish runaway onset or a failure forecast.
Accelerating rate calorimetry At what conditions does a cell self-heat or run away under thermal abuse? Runaway onset, self-heating behavior, separator-melting endotherms, pressure release, gas collection, maximum temperature, and visual decomposition evidence. It is not the same in-operando early-cycle measurement as IMC.
Fractional thermal-runaway calorimetry How is runaway energy partitioned? Total energy plus conducted and vented fractions when the apparatus is designed to separate them. It addresses an abusive failure event, not subtle parasitic heat during routine cycling.

A PubMed-indexed 2021 review describes ARC analyses that can include separator-melting endotherms, pressure release, gas collection, maximum temperature, and visual decomposition. NASA’s Engineering and Safety Center notes that conventional ARC can measure total runaway energy but cannot distinguish the portion conducted through the cell casing from the portion carried by vented effluents. NASA developed a specialized calorimeter for an 18650 cell to measure total, conducted, and vented contributions separately. These methods complement IMC rather than substitute for it.

A 2025 Nature Energy report describes rapid safety screening using ARC with lab-scale small batteries at a high level. Without the detailed experimental record, that report should not be used to assign specific IMC detection limits, thresholds, or failure lead times.

How to compare results from different studies

Cross-study comparisons are valid only when the thermal and electrochemical contexts are made explicit. Use a comparison table or dataset with these fields:

  • Chemistry and format: for example, NMC/graphite coin cell versus a cylindrical cell; include size and construction when available.
  • State of charge and aging: give initial and final state of charge, cycle count, storage history, and any preconditioning.
  • Protocol and temperature: list current rates, voltage limits, constant-voltage holds, rest periods, ambient or controlled temperature, and overcharge or abuse steps.
  • Calibration and baseline treatment: identify reference runs, equilibration criteria, sign convention, filtering, averaging, and how noise was estimated.
  • Thermal signal versus corroborating evidence: separate heat-flow observations from voltage, efficiency, capacity, impedance, pressure, gas, teardown, or microscopy findings.
  • Question being tested: distinguish controlled-cycle parasitic behavior from self-heating, runaway onset, or energy partition during abuse.

Do not transfer the MC179 values of 1 μW, ±100 nW, a doubled signal, or roughly three days to another instrument or cell without a demonstrated equivalence study. The reviewed sources do not establish cross-instrument detection-limit comparisons or a standardized universal interpretation threshold.

A feature is close to the noise floor

Use replicate cells, a matched control, appropriate averaging, and the instrument’s documented noise analysis. Do not label a feature as an exotherm merely because it appears once in an unfiltered trace.

The control and test cell have different total heat

Check mass, capacity, state of charge, mounting pressure, thermal contact, and protocol history. Normalize only when the normalization is physically justified and clearly state the method; arbitrary scaling can hide a real difference.

Electrical data look normal while heat flow diverges

Treat the divergence as an early warning for investigation, not as proof of a particular fault. Continue synchronized cycling only within the approved safety plan, then seek independent electrochemical or physical evidence before naming the mechanism.

How to write a defensible IMC safety conclusion

A useful conclusion has four parts:

  1. Observation: describe the baseline, peaks, timing, and cycle-to-cycle trend without assigning a mechanism.
  2. Comparison: state how the trace differs from the matched control and whether the difference is larger than documented noise.
  3. Corroboration: list the voltage, efficiency, capacity, inspection, or other evidence that supports—or fails to support—a mechanism.
  4. Scope: identify the cell, protocol, temperature, instrument, and date range, then state what cannot be generalized.

For example: “Under the specified 4.25 V upper-limit protocol at the recorded temperature, the NMC/graphite coin cell developed recurring exotherms and a rising inter-cycle baseline relative to the 4.20 V control. The pattern is consistent with increasing parasitic activity and, in light of the later electrical instability, compatible with the authors’ lithium-plating and internal-short interpretation. The result is specific to these two cells and this instrument; it is not a universal threshold or failure-time prediction.”

What IMC can contribute to a battery-safety program

  • Screening: identify cells or protocols whose heat-flow behavior diverges before a clear voltage failure.
  • Mechanism studies: test whether a change in temperature, current, voltage limit, or aging history alters a thermal signature.
  • Model validation: compare measured heat generation with electrochemical and thermal models, provided sign, calibration, and boundary conditions are documented.
  • Test planning: select cells for follow-up with ARC, teardown, microscopy, impedance, gas analysis, or other abuse methods.

Its value is greatest when treated as one synchronized channel in a broader evidence chain. The instrument can reveal that something thermally different is happening; electrochemical and physical methods are usually needed to establish what it is and how dangerous it may be.

Limits that should appear in every safety report

  • IMC does not provide a mechanism-specific diagnosis from heat flow alone.
  • It does not replace abuse testing or establish thermal-runaway onset by itself.
  • Vendor demonstrations are not independent validation or standards-body requirements.
  • Noise, calibration, and alarm thresholds are instrument- and setup-specific unless validated across systems.
  • A lead time observed in one experiment is not a guarantee for another cell, chemistry, format, or protocol.
  • Absence of a visible heat anomaly does not prove absence of a defect if the signal is below detection capability or the relevant process is not thermally expressed under that protocol.
