The “Stanford ranking” is usually the Stanford-associated, Elsevier-hosted Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators, often called the Top-Cited Scientists Database or the “World’s Top 2% Scientists” list. It is a Scopus-based view of citation impact—not a Stanford University award, certification, or complete judgment of scientific quality.
To interpret a result responsibly, identify the edition and citation window, check the scientist’s field and subfield, distinguish the composite c-score from underlying indicators, confirm whether self-citations are included, and inspect the underlying Scopus author profile. Inclusion can indicate unusually high citation impact under this system; omission does not show that a researcher’s work is poor, and inclusion does not prove that every aspect of the research is excellent.
What people mean by the “Stanford ranking”
Stanford University is associated with the project because John P. A. Ioannidis and colleagues developed the standardized citation-indicator datasets with Stanford affiliations. The data are hosted and distributed through Elsevier’s research-data infrastructure and are built from Scopus records. The database is an archival bibliometric snapshot: each published edition remains fixed, while profile corrections can affect a later edition rather than changing the old file.
That distinction matters when a university biography says a scientist is “ranked by Stanford.” The wording should be read as “included in a Stanford-associated, Elsevier-hosted citation database,” not as an award made by Stanford or a peer-review panel’s certification of excellence. The project measures patterns in published work and citations. It does not directly assess the soundness of methods, originality, mentoring, teaching, public service, or the social value of a research program.

The latest edition covered here is Version 9, published October 7, 2026. It uses an August 1, 2026 Scopus snapshot and updates citation data through citation year 2025. Its career-long view runs through the end of 2025; its single recent-year view counts citations received during calendar year 2025.
What Version 9 actually measures
Version 9 reports several indicators rather than one universal score. A profile can look different depending on which indicator, time window, and self-citation setting you use.

Version 9 classifies scientists into 20 broad fields and 174 Science-Metrix subfields. Field and subfield percentiles are supplied for scientists with at least five papers. A percentile is meaningful only with its reference group: a 2% result in one subfield is not automatically comparable with a 2% result in another.

The current selection rule combines two routes. A scientist may be included by ranking among the top 100,000 scientists by c-score, using the database’s stated c-score treatments, or by reaching a percentile rank of 2% or above within a subfield. This is not a simple worldwide list in which every person below one numerical position is excluded.
Subfield percentiles exist because citation behavior differs. A publication-heavy biomedical subfield, a small mathematics specialty, and a newer interdisciplinary area can have very different citation distributions. The percentile route attempts to compare a scientist with a relevant specialty rather than applying one raw citation threshold to every discipline.

Consequently, two scientists can both be listed even when their overall citation totals or apparent global positions differ substantially. Conversely, a scientist who appears higher on a broad ranking may not satisfy a particular subfield rule used in another edition. Any statement such as “ranked in the top 2%” should name the subfield, edition, and whether it refers to the career-long or recent-year view.
How to read a personal result step by step
- Record the edition and snapshot. For Version 9, write down “published October 7, 2026; Scopus snapshot August 1, 2026; citations through 2025.” A result without these dates is incomplete because a later edition can change both inclusion and values.
- Identify the time window. Mark whether the number is career-long or the single recent-year view for 2025. These answer different questions and should never be presented as interchangeable.
- Write down the field and subfield. Note the broad field, the Science-Metrix subfield, and the percentile reference group. Do not compare a percentile from one subfield with a percentile from another as though they used one common citation threshold.
- Name the metric. Say “c-score,” “h-index,” “hm-index,” total citations, or another indicator. A headline that says only “ranked highly” hides which calculation produced the result.
- Check self-citation treatment. Version 9 supplies versions with and without self-citations. Use one setting consistently when comparing people or years; mixing settings can create an apparent advantage that is only a measurement difference.
- Inspect the Scopus author profile. Confirm that publications, name variants, affiliations, and author identity are assigned correctly. An incorrectly merged profile or missing paper can materially change the indicators.
- Check the selection route. Determine whether inclusion came through the overall top-100,000 route or the subfield-percentile route, when that information is available. The route explains why a person may be listed without a globally prominent raw total.
- Report the result with its qualifiers. A defensible sentence identifies the edition, snapshot, view, subfield, metric, and self-citation setting before giving the number or inclusion claim.
Why a scientist can be absent, added, or removed
“Why am I not included?”
Elsevier’s FAQ gives a deliberately narrow answer: “Being absent from the list simply means the composite indicator (c-score) value was not high enough to meet the inclusion threshold for that version, either the top 100,000 scientists overall or the top 2% within a sub-field. It does not mean the author’s work is not of good quality.”

It is not evidence that a researcher lacks important results.
“Why has my ranking and/or inclusion status changed?”
Changes can result from a new citation snapshot, new publications and citations, shifts in the comparison population, revised field classifications, or corrections to author-profile assignments. Version 9 is frozen as an archival release; a correction submitted after publication is intended for a future update, not a retroactive edit of Version 9.
“Why are others and not me included even though they have less?”
Raw totals are only one part of the process. The other researcher may qualify through a subfield percentile, have a different authorship pattern reflected in the hm-index or position-based indicators, or be evaluated in a field with a different citation distribution. Compare the same edition, subfield, metric, and self-citation setting before concluding that the list is inconsistent.

How to verify and correct the underlying author profile
Scopus publication assignments feed the database, so identity errors are a practical concern. Look for duplicated author profiles, papers assigned to a namesake, missing publications, incorrect affiliations, and name variants that were not linked.
- Open the scientist’s Scopus author profile and compare the listed publications with the researcher’s institutional record.
- Check that the profile’s subject areas and author identity correspond to the correct person.
- Document missing, wrongly assigned, or duplicated records rather than relying on a screenshot of the ranking.
- Use Elsevier’s Scopus Author Feedback Wizard to submit profile corrections for consideration in future updates.
- When reporting a result, state that the database is an archival snapshot and that a later correction may not alter the already published edition.
Profile verification is especially important for common names, transliterated names, large collaborations, and researchers who have changed institutions or disciplines.
How to compare two scientists without creating a false conclusion
Before comparing records, align every material dimension. The following checklist can be used in a spreadsheet or review note.

Even after alignment, describe the result as a comparison of citation indicators, not a ranking of scientific worth. A lower c-score does not establish lower-quality research.
Why Google Scholar and other databases show different numbers
Different citation databases index different sources and apply different eligibility rules. Elsevier’s FAQ notes that Google Scholar tends to count more citations than Scopus in most disciplines because it is less selective about which citing sources qualify. Google Scholar can include material that Scopus does not, while Scopus may apply more controlled indexing and document-type rules.

A disagreement between databases is therefore expected, not proof that one profile is fraudulent. When a number matters, name the database, access date or edition, coverage assumptions, and whether self-citations are included. Never combine a Scopus c-score with a Google Scholar citation total and present the result as one unified measure.

Version 9 includes retraction-related data, drawing on Retraction Watch information to facilitate mapping potential integrity issues. A retraction indicator is a prompt to investigate the individual paper and the surrounding record. It is not, by itself, a finding of misconduct.
A Stanford Profiles summary of a 2025 study by Ioannidis and colleagues reports 39,468 eligible retractions linked to Scopus from 55,237 Retraction Watch items as of August 15, 2024. That is a statistic from a separate research study, not the denominator for Version 9 rankings and not a count of misconduct cases.
Retractions can result from different circumstances, including honest error, journal or publisher problems, authorship disputes, or deliberate wrongdoing. If a profile raises a concern, inspect the specific article, retraction notice, dates, and stated reason. Do not label a scientist’s conduct from a database flag alone.

What independent criticism of the method means
A 2026 article in Scientometrics analyzed Version 8, the August 2025 release. It reported publication-type and historical-coverage anomalies, cases involving retraction rates, and discontinuities near the tail of the list. In that Version 8 analysis, the authors’ proposed combined filters retained 99.30% of the top 1,000, 98.92% of the top 10,000, and 97.47% of the top 100,000, with perfect rank-order preservation under their analysis.

Those figures describe Version 8 and should not be presented as a direct audit of Version 9. They support a measured conclusion: the database can be useful for large-scale citation analysis, but its data coverage and selection mechanics deserve inspection before high-stakes decisions such as hiring, promotion, funding, or institutional comparisons.
The dataset’s own authors make the broader warning explicit: “Citation metrics are widely used and misused.” The caution is not a rejection of bibliometrics; it is a reminder to use several kinds of evidence and to explain exactly what a number measures.
How to write a responsible claim about a listing
Use a sentence that carries the necessary qualifiers instead of a bare superlative. For example:
“In Version 9 of the Stanford-associated, Elsevier-hosted Top-Cited Scientists Database, based on the August 1, 2026 Scopus snapshot and citations through 2025, the researcher met the stated inclusion rule in the [named] subfield in the [career-long or 2025 recent-year] view, using the [metric] with [self-citations included/removed].”
Replace the bracketed descriptions with verified profile information. If you cannot verify the subfield or metric, say only that the person appears in the database and identify the edition. Do not convert a database inclusion into “one of the world’s best scientists,” “Stanford-certified,” or “top-ranked globally.”
What the ranking can and cannot support
- It can support: a documented statement that a researcher met a stated citation-indicator threshold in a specified edition and comparison group.
- It can support: descriptive comparisons when the edition, window, field, metric, self-citation setting, and profile quality are aligned.
- It cannot support: a universal league table across unlike fields.
- It cannot support: a conclusion that an unlisted researcher produces poor work.
- It cannot support: a conclusion that every listed researcher is excellent in every dimension.
- It cannot support: an inference of misconduct from a retraction-related flag without case-by-case review.
Elsevier’s FAQ answers the question “Are all scientists listed in the databases excellent scientists and those not listed are not?” with “NO!” and advises cautious use of citation metrics. That is the appropriate frame for reading any Stanford-associated result.
