An apparent rise or fall in heatwaves can be credible even when a historical record contains gaps, but the gaps limit how strong your conclusion can be. Start by defining the heatwave, map exactly which observations are missing, keep the metric and geographic area consistent, test whether the result survives reasonable analytical choices, and compare it with independent observation-based data or reanalysis.

Do not treat a missing period as automatically harmless or as proof that a trend is false. A defensible interpretation states what the record can establish, what it cannot, and how much confidence independent evidence adds.

What an incomplete record can—and cannot—tell you

A trend is a comparison across time. If some observations are absent, the comparison may still be useful, but only after you identify whether the missingness is concentrated in particular years, seasons, stations, or variables. A gap during a cool interval can affect an event count differently from a gap during an exceptionally hot interval. Missing nighttime observations can leave a daytime-only analysis looking stable even while warm nights are changing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal completeness percentage that automatically makes a heatwave trend valid or invalid. The appropriate judgment depends on the claim, the data structure, and the method used. The available guidance does not establish a single minimum threshold for every station, network, season, or heatwave definition.

Use the following scale when describing your conclusion:

  • Descriptive: the available observations show more or fewer detected events, without claiming that the change represents every year or every location.
  • Conditional trend: the direction is similar after reasonable choices of period, locations, or indicator, but coverage limitations remain.
  • Well-supported local trend: the record is documented, comparable through time, and the direction is consistent with independent datasets, with uncertainty reported.
  • Not established: missingness, changing station coverage, or shifting definitions prevent a reliable local comparison.

Use language such as “the available records indicate” or “the record is too incomplete to establish a local trend confidently.” Do not invent a percentage change, statistical significance, or gap-filling procedure that the dataset documentation does not provide.

Define “heatwave” before counting one

Heatwave has no universal temperature cutoff. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) states that heatwaves are generally defined with local thresholds because what is unusual and hazardous depends on the local climate and conditions. Your result therefore depends on the threshold, the number of successive days required, the season, and the heat variable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose an absolute or local threshold

An absolute threshold uses a fixed temperature, while a relative threshold uses a percentile or another measure of what is unusual for that location and season. A fixed value can be useful for a specific health or infrastructure rule, but it may not describe unusual heat equally well in different climates. A local or percentile-based threshold can make comparisons more climate-relevant, provided the baseline period and calculation are documented.

State the duration rule

Specify how many successive days or nights are required before an episode counts, how a break is handled, and whether two nearby episodes are merged. Do not silently change this rule between the early and late portions of the record. If a source uses a different rule, present its results as a different indicator rather than combining event counts.

Separate the heat dimensions

Daytime maximum temperature, nighttime minimum temperature, combined temperature measures, and humidity-aware heat-stress indices describe different hazards. WMO emphasizes that excess heat over successive days and nights matters and that no single metric captures every dimension of extreme heat.

Indicator What it describes Interpretive caution
Daytime maximum temperature Peak daytime heat and the hottest part of an episode Can miss overnight recovery and persistent warm nights
Nighttime minimum temperature Warm nights and reduced opportunity for the body and buildings to cool Requires reliable nighttime observations; behavior can differ from daytime heat
Temperature-only episode Heatwaves identified from temperature thresholds Does not directly represent humidity or other stressors
Humidity-inclusive or thermal-stress index Combined effects of temperature and moisture, where the index is defined Results depend on the chosen formula and the availability of humidity observations

A 2017 study by Bradfield Lyon and Anthony G. Barnston, archived by NOAA, illustrates why this choice matters. In its United States May–September analysis for 1979–2013, heatwaves based on maximum temperatures had higher frequency and persistence than those based on minimum temperatures, with regional variation. The study also found different behavior when moisture-inclusive measures were used instead of temperature-only measures. Those findings apply to that study’s scope; they are not a universal numerical rule for every country or station.

Audit the historical record before describing its trend

Do not begin with the line on a chart. Begin with the data inventory. Record the following items for every series you plan to use:

  1. Location and footprint: identify the station, stations, grid cells, or regional average, and state whether the geographic area changes through time.
  2. Dates and seasons: list the first and last year, the months included, and every missing interval that could affect the indicator.
  3. Variables: note which years contain maximum temperature, minimum temperature, humidity, or other inputs. A complete daytime record does not imply a complete nighttime or humidity record.
  4. Station and network changes: check for relocations, instrumentation changes, changes in observing schedules, or a switch from one set of stations to another. Use the provider’s documentation rather than assuming the series is homogeneous.
  5. Quality-control and processing notes: find out whether the provider flags suspect readings, homogenizes a series, interpolates missing values, or applies another adjustment. If the method is not documented, say so.
  6. Overlap: identify years in which the same stations or locations are available in both the earlier and later periods. Overlap helps distinguish a temporal change from a change in the network itself.

Keep a missingness log that identifies the year, season, station or grid cell, variable, and reason when known. A statement such as “the record is incomplete” is not enough for a reader to judge its effect. Describe whether the missing observations are isolated days, whole seasons, whole years, or an entire part of the network.

Make the comparison like-for-like

The safest first analysis uses one definition, one season, one geographic footprint, and one set of variables across the full period. If the original network changes, calculate the trend over a common period or common set of locations where the dataset allows it. Show the overlap instead of silently comparing one group of stations in the early years with another group later.

These are analytical choices, not universal WMO-prescribed corrections. Explain exactly what you retained and what you excluded. If you use a regional average, state how stations or grid cells are weighted and whether the weighting changes when observations are missing. If you analyze event counts, explain whether an event can be counted when one day inside the required sequence is absent.

Use a baseline that readers can reproduce

For a percentile threshold, identify the baseline years and the season used to calculate the percentiles. A baseline that contains many gaps can make the threshold unstable. If you change the baseline, treat the result as a sensitivity test rather than presenting both values as if they came from one definition.

Do not silently repair gaps

Missing observations may be estimated in some products, but you must not claim that a station gap was repaired unless the dataset method says that it was. A current thermometer cannot reconstruct a historical observation. If you omit incomplete days, report the rule and show how many eligible days remain. If you use a provider’s processed series, name the product and its documented processing.

Test whether the direction survives reasonable choices

A credible interpretation does not rely on one arbitrary definition. Repeat the calculation with a second defensible indicator that answers a different reader concern. For example, pair daytime maximum temperature with nighttime minimum temperature, or compare a temperature-only definition with a documented humidity-inclusive index.

Record whether the direction, timing, or relative size changes. A result that is stable in direction but different in magnitude should be reported as sensitive to the indicator. A result that reverses direction should not be presented as a simple increase or decrease without explaining why.

Useful sensitivity checks

  • Apply the same threshold and duration rule to the entire period.
  • Repeat the analysis over the overlap period when the station network changes.
  • Compare the full geographic footprint with a fixed subset of locations that has longer coverage.
  • Examine daytime maxima and nighttime minima separately.
  • Where suitable inputs exist, compare temperature-only and moisture-inclusive measures.
  • Check whether removing a short, heavily incomplete interval changes the direction.

The Lyon and Barnston study’s differences between maximum-temperature and minimum-temperature heatwaves are a reminder that sensitivity is substantive, not merely a technical footnote. A reader interested in health impacts may care about persistent warm nights, while an infrastructure analysis may focus on the daytime peak.

Use independent evidence without hiding its differences

An observation-based gridded dataset or a reanalysis can provide context when a station record has spatial or temporal gaps. They do not automatically replace the missing station observations.

Evidence type What it can add What to disclose
Station observations Direct measurements at specific locations Missing days, station moves, instrumentation, quality control, and the geographic area represented
Observation-based gridded dataset A spatially consistent field built from observations, useful for comparing areas Input-station coverage, interpolation or gridding method, period, variables, and quality-control documentation
Reanalysis Continuous spatial and temporal context by combining observations with numerical weather or climate models Product name, period, variables, model-assisted nature, and differences from the station record
Global or regional assessment Context about the direction of changes across broad areas Assessment scope, confidence, and the fact that it does not establish a trend at one incomplete station

WMO explains that reanalyses combine observations within numerical models. That makes them useful additional evidence, especially where observations are sparse, but a reanalysis value is not a literal replacement for a missing station reading. Agreement between genuinely different sources strengthens confidence. Disagreement is a reason to inspect coverage, definitions, and processing—not to choose whichever product gives the preferred answer.

When comparing products, disclose the heatwave definition and threshold, duration rule, metric, geographic footprint, season, baseline, study years, missing intervals, station or network coverage, and whether the product is observational, gridded, satellite-derived, or model-assisted. Also state whether the conclusion concerns frequency, duration, intensity, spatial extent, or a single record event.

Put a local result in the right climate context

The WMO’s 2022 summary of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report says that hot extremes, including heatwaves, have become more frequent and more intense across most land regions since the 1950s, with high confidence that human-induced climate change is the main driver. This is a broad assessed finding. It makes an increase at a particular locality physically consistent with the wider pattern, but it does not establish the size, significance, or even direction of a trend at a station with missing observations.

The same summary notes that regional event studies are uneven and that missing observations and limited reliable models constrain some analyses. Keep the scales separate: a global or continental finding is context, while a local conclusion requires local evidence, suitable coverage, and an uncertainty statement.

Handle record extremes separately from trend claims

A single record hot day is not the same claim as a long-term increase in heatwave frequency. Record claims require careful verification of the observation, the instrument, the station history, and the comparison period. WMO’s guidance on evaluating weather and climate extremes, summarized on 20 December 2023, describes collaboration with national meteorological authorities and experts and attention to measurement challenges.

Dr Omar Baddour, WMO Chief of Climate Monitoring, said: “Improving the understanding and characterization of extreme weather and climate events is crucial to support disaster risk reduction and the ongoing international Early Warnings for All initiative.” The record-evaluation process concerns potential records; it is not a blanket validation of every trend dataset. If a dataset labels an observation as a record, identify whether an official evaluation has occurred.

Write the conclusion at the strength the evidence supports

Use a conclusion that names the evidence and its limits. Examples:

  • Consistent evidence: “Across the fixed station subset and the observation-based gridded product, the same local-threshold definition indicates more frequent events during the overlapping period; the reanalysis provides consistent spatial context.”
  • Conditional evidence: “The available station record indicates an increase in daytime heatwaves, but the magnitude changes when nighttime minima and the network-overlap period are used.”
  • Insufficient evidence: “The record is too incomplete and the station coverage changes too substantially to establish a local heatwave trend confidently.”

Avoid writing “heatwaves increased by X percent” unless the calculation, denominator, period, and uncertainty are documented. Avoid “the gap was corrected” unless the dataset provider explicitly describes the correction. If no location, station network, period, or dataset has been specified, no local numerical conclusion can be calculated.

A practical workflow for an analyst or writer

  1. State the claim: write the location, period, season, heatwave definition, indicator, and whether you are measuring count, duration, intensity, spatial extent, or a record.
  2. Inventory the record: map missing days, seasons, years, stations, variables, and documented network changes.
  3. Choose a consistent definition: use a locally relevant or percentile-based threshold where appropriate, and document the baseline and duration rule.
  4. Create a comparable subset: use the common station set or overlap period when coverage changes, and label this as an analytical choice.
  5. Calculate the primary indicator: retain the same metric and eligibility rules through time.
  6. Run sensitivity checks: test another reasonable period, location subset, heat variable, or moisture treatment.
  7. Compare independent products: document each product’s coverage, variables, processing, and model involvement.
  8. Separate context from conclusion: use the broad IPCC/WMO finding to explain plausibility, not to substitute for local evidence.
  9. Report uncertainty and missingness: identify which parts of the result are robust and which depend on incomplete coverage or a particular definition.
  10. Use calibrated language: match the final wording to the evidence category rather than implying more precision than the record supports.

Common interpretation errors

  • Assuming a gap is random: missing observations may cluster in particular seasons, stations, or variables, changing the apparent event count.
  • Mixing definitions: counting fixed-threshold events in one period and percentile events in another creates a methodological break that can look like a climate trend.
  • Combining day and night heat: a daytime maximum and a nighttime minimum are distinct indicators and should not be merged without a defined combined metric.
  • Ignoring station replacement: a larger or newer network can change the number of detected events even if the underlying climate signal is unchanged.
  • Treating reanalysis as an observation: model-assisted continuity is valuable context, but it has different sources of uncertainty from a thermometer record.
  • Using global context as local proof: broad warming findings cannot determine the trend at one incomplete station.
  • Calling an unverified value a record: official record evaluation involves measurement scrutiny and expert review.
  • Inventing a completeness rule: no single minimum percentage is established for every heatwave analysis.

Reader checklist

Before publishing or relying on an incomplete-record heatwave trend, confirm that you can answer each question:

  • What location or area does the claim cover?
  • Which years and seasons are included?
  • What threshold, duration rule, and baseline define a heatwave?
  • Is the indicator a daytime maximum, nighttime minimum, combined temperature, or humidity-aware measure?
  • Which days, seasons, stations, variables, or grid cells are missing?
  • Did station coverage, instruments, or processing change?
  • Was a common period or common location set used where coverage changed?
  • Does the direction survive at least one reasonable alternative definition or period?
  • What independent observation-based dataset or reanalysis was compared, and how does it differ?
  • Does the conclusion distinguish broad climate context from evidence for this locality?
  • Are record extremes separately verified?
  • Does the wording state uncertainty without inventing a significance level or correction?

The central test is comparability. A gap narrows the claim; it does not automatically erase every signal. A carefully defined indicator, transparent coverage audit, consistent comparison, sensitivity analysis, and independent context can support a useful conclusion while showing readers exactly where confidence ends.
