Start with one bounded NetOps workflow, not a fleet of agents. Map the telemetry, tickets, runbooks, dashboards, configuration records and permissions that workflow already uses. Add AI through governed interfaces and shared observability, measure whether it improves the workflow, and expand autonomy only when evidence, approvals and rollback controls are working. This approach reuses your existing operations instead of adding another disconnected dashboard.
Why AI projects create tool sprawl in NetOps
Network teams rarely lack data. They have network telemetry, topology and inventory, event and observability systems, ticketing, configuration history, runbooks and dashboards. The problem is that these systems often represent different slices of the same incident. An AI product added on top of one slice can become another console for operators to check, another connector to maintain and another identity to secure.
Survey evidence illustrates the scale of the correlation problem, while not proving a universal industry rate. Cisco’s September 23, 2026 release of independent Omdia survey findings says 92% of respondents reported that performance issues commonly span multiple domains and require correlation across ten or more tools. The 1,000 surveyed IT and network-operations decision-makers worked at organizations with at least 500 employees in North America, Western Europe and Asia-Pacific. The same release reported that 95% said existing non-agentic AIOps tools fall short in one or more significant areas.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThose figures support a workflow-first design: decide which operational outcome you want to improve, then connect the systems that already contain the evidence. They do not establish that a particular vendor or one universal platform is right for every network.

Choose a bounded workflow before choosing an AI architecture
Pick a recurring task with a clear start, finish and observable outcome. Good first candidates include alert triage, incident investigation for one service, or a narrowly defined diagnostic procedure. Avoid a goal such as “make network operations autonomous”; it has no testable boundary and encourages uncontrolled integrations.
Define the workflow contract
Write down the workflow’s current inputs, decisions, handoffs and failure modes:
- Trigger: the alert, ticket, customer report or threshold that starts the process.
- Evidence: telemetry, topology, inventory, recent changes, logs, dashboards and related incidents.
- Actions: searches, queries, ticket updates, communications or configuration changes.
- Decision owner: the role allowed to approve a recommendation or change.
- Success measure: for example, time to understand an incident, investigation quality, safe resolution rate or operator effort.
- Failure and recovery: what happens when data is missing, a tool is unavailable or a proposed change is wrong.
The 2026 survey preprint on agentic NetOps and AIOps argues that reliability depends on this surrounding machinery—policies, checks and rollback—not only on a model’s answer. Treat the workflow as a constrained operational control problem.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Set a boundary that can be tested
A useful first boundary might be: “For high-severity WAN alerts affecting service X, assemble evidence from the existing monitoring, topology and change systems, identify likely causes, and draft an incident update; do not alter production configuration.” That statement gives you a fixed tool set, a human decision point and a measurable output.
Inventory and reuse the tools you already operate
Before adding an AI interface, map every system the selected workflow touches. Record the owner, data produced, API or export available, identity method, retention rule and operational dependency. Include systems that operators consult manually; they are often the source of duplicated context.
Build a cross-domain data map
- Network and application telemetry, logs, metrics and traces.
- Topology, service maps, asset inventory and dependency records.
- Alerts, incidents, tickets, escalation history and communications.
- Runbooks, standard operating procedures and known-error records.
- Configuration state, approved changes, backups and version history.
- Existing NMS, observability and IT-service-management interfaces.
Mark where the same device, service or incident has different identifiers. Decide which system is authoritative for each field and how freshness is established. An AI layer that silently merges stale or conflicting records will produce confident but unsafe explanations.
The Omdia findings reported by Cisco say 86% of respondents considered one integrated platform the most effective path forward. Use that as a reason to evaluate consolidation, not as proof that a single-vendor replacement fits your environment. Compare the cost of migration with the cost and risk of maintaining connectors among the systems you already have.

Use a shared model where it helps
For communication service providers, Google Cloud’s June 12, 2025 framework describes integrating diverse network data into a unified data model as a foundation for AI-driven automation. It identifies Amdocs, Ericsson and Nokia as solution providers and Accenture and Capgemini as systems integrators in that telecom context. Those are examples of an approach, not a general ranking. The framework also identifies existing-infrastructure integration, data management, cybersecurity, skills and return on investment as implementation challenges.
Design the AI integration around shared observability
AI execution should be visible inside the same operational process as the incident, not hidden in a separate chat window. Microsoft recommends end-to-end traces, consistent OpenTelemetry conventions and evaluation of quality and safety. Traditional latency, error and throughput metrics do not reveal enough about probabilistic AI behavior.
Capture an auditable execution record
For each request or run, capture:
- Request context, service or incident identifier and a unique run ID.
- Model, prompt or policy version and the time of execution.
- Retrieved records, their source systems, timestamps and provenance.
- Every tool invocation, arguments, result, permission decision and error.
- Human approvals, edits, rejected recommendations and final actions.
- Outcome data, including whether the incident was resolved and whether rollback was needed.
Use OpenTelemetry GenAI semantic conventions where they fit your stack so traces can be correlated with network and application signals. Apply data contracts to the fields agents consume, access controls to the traces themselves, retention limits and privacy rules for customer or employee data.
Measure behavior, not just infrastructure health
Monitor the usual service indicators—latency, errors and volume—alongside AI-specific measures:
- Groundedness: whether a recommendation is supported by retrieved evidence.
- Tool-use correctness: whether the agent selected the right tool and parameters.
- Trace completeness: whether the run contains enough context to reconstruct a decision.
- Policy violations, unauthorized requests and blocked actions.
- Human override, acceptance and correction rates.
- Outcome quality and rollback behavior.
Establish a behavioral baseline during a read-only phase. Alert on meaningful deviations, such as a sudden increase in tool calls, retrieval from an unapproved source or recommendations outside the workflow’s normal action envelope. Microsoft describes AI observability as a continuing process with operational overhead, not a one-time configuration.
Control identity, permissions and lifecycle
Every agent, connector and plugin should be treated as an operational component with an owner. Microsoft recommends inventorying models, tools, plugins and data sources; assigning ownership and auditable identities; applying least privilege; and controlling lifecycle and versions.
Create an agent record
For each deployed capability, document:
- Business and operational purpose.
- Named owner and support escalation.
- Approved data sources and tools.
- Identity, roles and exact permissions.
- Model, prompt, policy and connector versions.
- Environment restrictions, expiry date and review cadence.
- Audit, retention and incident-response requirements.
Separate read permissions from write permissions. A diagnostic agent may query telemetry and draft a ticket without being able to alter a router or close an incident. Use short-lived credentials where possible, isolate environments and require explicit approval for a privilege increase.

Prevent agent proliferation
Require an architecture and security review before a new agent or connector is created. Maintain a catalog so teams can discover an existing capability instead of building a duplicate. Retire unused agents, revoke their identities and preserve the records needed to explain past decisions. This governance is what keeps an AI program from becoming a new form of tool sprawl.
Stage autonomy with action envelopes and human review
Begin with evidence gathering and recommendations. Increase authority only after the workflow meets predefined quality and safety thresholds.
Define an action envelope
An action envelope states exactly what the system may do, where and under which conditions. Specify:
- Permitted tools and commands.
- Allowed resources, services, regions and environments.
- Maximum scope, rate and duration of an action.
- Required preconditions, such as a confirmed change window or healthy backup.
- Approval roles and the evidence they must review.
- Automatic stop conditions and the rollback procedure.
For consequential changes, keep a human in the loop until your evidence and controls justify a narrower approval process. The reviewer should see the recommendation, supporting records, intended effect, risk, exact command or change set and rollback plan—not merely a confidence score.
Test the complete workflow
- Replay historical cases. Run the workflow against incidents with known outcomes. Check whether the same evidence was available at decision time and whether the proposed action would have been safe.
- Use a sandbox. Exercise tools and integrations against a non-production environment or a simulated network. Verify authentication, timeouts, malformed responses and policy blocks.
- Run a canary. Limit the capability to a small service, team or incident class. Keep write actions disabled or tightly approved.
- Score more than the answer. Evaluate retrieval provenance, trace quality, tool selection, policy compliance, investigation quality, operator effort and rollback behavior.
- Review failures. Classify missing data, stale records, incorrect tool use, unsafe recommendations and human-interface problems. Fix the workflow or controls before expanding scope.
This sequence follows the 2026 agentic NetOps/AIOps survey preprint’s emphasis on bounded tool use, trace-quality checks, sandbox replay, canary trials and rollback-aware scoring.

A practical integration sequence
- Select one workflow. Choose a recurring task with an observable result and document its inputs, handoffs, permissions and failure modes.
- Map the estate. Inventory telemetry, topology, inventory, alerts, tickets, runbooks, configuration history and existing observability systems. Identify duplicated data and manual handoffs.
- Choose integration points. Prefer existing APIs, event streams and identity controls. Define authoritative sources and data freshness rather than copying every system into a new store.
- Instrument execution. Add run IDs, end-to-end traces, retrieval provenance, tool-call logs and human decision records. Standardize telemetry where possible.
- Set governance. Register the agent, owner, tools, data, permissions, versions, retention and review schedule. Enforce least privilege.
- Operate read-only first. Produce evidence packages, explanations and drafts while humans perform changes.
- Test and canary. Use replay, sandbox and limited production trials. Score outcomes and rollback behavior.
- Expand selectively. Grant a narrowly defined action only when the workflow meets its safety, quality and audit thresholds. Reassess after every material model, connector or policy change.
Compare architecture choices on operational fit
When deciding between extending the current stack, adopting a more integrated platform or combining specialized components, compare the complete operating model rather than model quality alone.
| Evaluation axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Installed-system integration | Can it connect to current telemetry, ticketing, inventory and configuration systems without duplicating authoritative data? |
| Cross-domain context | Can it link signals to one service, incident or dependency view across network and application domains? |
| Traceability | Are retrieval sources, tool calls, rationale, approvals and post-action results available for audit? |
| Identity and permissions | Does it support named identities, least privilege, approval boundaries and credential rotation? |
| Testing and recovery | Are replay, sandboxing, canaries, evaluation and rollback supported? |
| Data governance | Can you control provenance, retention, privacy, residency and access to prompts and traces? |
| Total operational burden | Who maintains connectors, agents, prompts, policies, models, dashboards and on-call support? |
Consolidation can reduce handoffs, but it can also increase migration effort, concentration risk and dependence on one data model. A federated design can preserve existing investments, but connector and lifecycle overhead may grow. Select the option that meets your workflow’s control and evidence requirements, not the one with the longest feature list.

Use a concrete preview capability carefully
Microsoft documents Azure Copilot Observability Agent autonomous operations as a public-preview workflow that can correlate alerts, create issues and run investigations while leaving mitigations and environment changes to humans. It is an example of useful constrained autonomy: the system gathers and organizes evidence, but people remain responsible for decisions and remediation.
The documentation states that automatic deep investigation on agent-created issues became billable on July 1, 2026. Preview scope and regional availability are limited and subject to change, so verify current feature coverage, geography, eligibility and billing before designing a production process around it. Treat preview behavior as a pilot input, not as a substitute for your own testing and governance.
Metrics that show whether integration is working
Track a small set of workflow and control metrics together. An improvement in one number can hide a safety or maintenance problem elsewhere.
- Operational outcome: time to understand an incident, investigation quality, safe resolution rate or operator effort.
- Evidence quality: groundedness, source freshness and completeness of retrieved context.
- Execution quality: correct tool selection, parameter accuracy, trace coverage and run completion.
- Safety: policy violations, unauthorized attempts, human overrides and rollback frequency.
- Reliability: tool failures, timeout rates, stale-data incidents and recovery time.
- Program overhead: connector maintenance, review hours, model or policy changes and cost per workflow run.
Set a baseline before enabling AI, compare the canary with the existing process and keep measuring after expansion. A system that saves investigation time but increases unsafe changes or manual trace review is not an operational improvement.
Common failure modes and fixes
Adding a dashboard instead of removing a handoff
Symptom: operators must open the AI console, the NMS, ticketing and configuration systems to verify one recommendation.
Fix: embed evidence and actions in the incident workflow, link back to authoritative records and log the same run ID across systems.
Giving write access too early
Symptom: an agent can execute broad changes before its recommendations and tool use have been evaluated.

What trustworthy agentic NetOps looks like
Trust is visible in the record of a decision. Cisco executive Joe Vaccaro summarized the requirement this way: “Agentic AI for NetOps requires trust built on visibility into every decision, explainable context behind every recommendation, and guardrails that ensure deterministic outcomes.”
In practice, that means an operator can answer four questions for any run: What happened? Which evidence was used? Why was this recommendation made? Who approved or rejected the resulting action? If your architecture cannot answer those questions, adding more autonomy will increase uncertainty rather than reduce operational work.
