Start with a set-by-set inventory, then ask your homeowners or renters insurer how its actual policy treats LEGO collectibles. Standard personal-property coverage can have limits, deductibles, covered-cause restrictions, valuation rules, and category sublimits. If those terms do not fit your collection, compare an endorsement or personal articles policy with separate collectibles coverage. Get the applicable terms in writing: policies and eligibility vary, and the available guidance does not establish that every insurer accepts LEGO collections or how it would value them.
The practical order is straightforward: document what you own, clarify what value you are trying to insure, check your current policy, and compare any alternatives on their specific terms. A large general personal-property limit alone does not answer whether a particular collection, loss, or item will be covered.
Document the collection before requesting coverage
A useful inventory shows what you own, its condition, and the evidence supporting your claimed value. It is a practical record for an insurer or a claim, not a special LEGO-only form. Making it before shopping for more coverage also helps you explain the collection’s scope and identify questions you need the insurer to answer.

Record each set and its condition
For each item, note the LEGO set number and name if known, quantity, whether it is sealed, opened, or assembled, condition, and purchase date and price when available. Include loose parts or other related collectibles as separate entries when they matter to the collection’s value. Photograph individual items and the collection as it is stored. Keep receipts, certificates, provenance records, and prior appraisals if you have them.

Be consistent about how you describe condition and format. For example, distinguish a sealed set from an opened set, and an assembled model from a boxed one. Record what is known rather than guessing at a set number, purchase date, or price. A clear description and identifying information can make it easier to connect your record to the item later, while photographs can show both individual pieces and the way the collection was stored. The sources do not prescribe a LEGO-specific inventory format, so ask an insurer whether it requires a particular template or level of detail.
Keep items that have meaningfully different identifying details or condition as separate entries when that distinction could matter to the collection’s description or value. You do not need to assume that every brick must be listed individually: ask whether a policy can cover a group on a blanket basis or whether it requires individual scheduling. The insurer’s answer should guide how much detail you prepare.
Keep the evidence accessible if the collection is not
Store a copy of the inventory and its supporting records somewhere separate and secure from the collection. The Texas Department of Insurance advises: “Keep appraisals, receipts, and pictures in a safe place in case you need to file a claim.” See its collectibles coverage guidance.

Ask what records it expects for underwriting and what evidence it would want if you made a claim.
Find out what value the policy will insure
A price guide or completed-sale listing may help establish context, but it does not by itself determine what an insurer will pay. Value can depend on condition, rarity, authenticity, demand, and other factors. State Farm describes market value generally as what an item might sell for between a willing buyer and seller in an appropriate market. Replacement value generally considers the cost of replacing an item with one of comparable kind and quality. Those are different measures, so ask which one the policy uses and how it applies to LEGO sets, loose parts, sealed boxes, and assembled models; the cited guidance does not settle those LEGO-specific questions. Read State Farm’s guidance on appraising and insuring collectibles.
When you discuss value, make the distinction explicit: are you describing what an item might sell for, what it would cost to replace with something comparable, or a value defined another way in the policy? Do not assume that your purchase price, an online asking price, a completed-sale price, or your own estimate is automatically the settlement figure. The insurer should explain the policy’s valuation and claim-settlement basis, and what documentation supports it.

Ask the insurer what evidence it accepts and whether it requires or recommends an appraisal. If you hire an appraiser, look for relevant collectible experience and ask about credentials, valuation methods, fees, and the contents of the written report. Keep the report with the inventory. An appraisal can be useful evidence, but it is not universally required, and having one does not by itself establish what a policy will pay. Confirm whether the insurer will accept the appraisal and whether it wants a particular format or a more current valuation.
Recommended Free Tools
For LEGO-specific questions, ask directly how the insurer wants you to describe sealed boxes, opened sets, loose parts, and assembled models. Ask whether one value should be provided for a group or whether items need separate values. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal valuation rule for any of those categories, so avoid assuming that an online price reference or an appraisal method will match the insurer’s approach.
Check your homeowners or renters policy first
Do not treat the policy’s general personal-property limit as a promise that a valuable collection will be paid at that amount. Contract terms may impose a category sublimit, deductible, covered-peril restriction, or valuation method that changes the result. The policy language—not a general explanation of insurance—controls. Consumer and insurer guidance from the Texas Department of Insurance, Progressive, and Liberty Mutual highlights these kinds of differences.
A category sublimit is especially important to ask about: a policy may have a broad personal-property limit but also set a lower limit for a category of belongings. Find out whether a collectibles or other relevant sublimit applies, what its dollar amount is, and whether it applies to the whole LEGO collection or to individual items. Then ask how the deductible and valuation basis affect the amount that could be paid for a covered loss. A limit is only one part of the answer; covered causes, exclusions, and policy definitions matter too.
Contact your insurer or agent and ask these questions about the contract you would actually have:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Are LEGO sets and related collection contents covered as personal property?
- Does a collectibles or other category sublimit apply, and what is its dollar amount?
- Is a loss settled using actual cash value, replacement cost, agreed value, stated value, or another definition? What proof supports that value?
- Which causes of loss are covered? Ask specifically about theft, fire, accidental breakage, water damage, flood, and mysterious disappearance rather than assuming they are included.
- What deductible applies, and does it differ for scheduled or specialist coverage?
- Does protection apply away from home, including during shipping, travel, display, or temporary storage?
- Can the collection be covered by an endorsement, floater, personal articles policy, or standalone collectibles policy? Must items be individually listed, or is blanket coverage available?
- How are newly acquired sets handled, and how soon must you update a schedule?
- What inventory or appraisal format is required? Can you receive the answers and applicable terms in writing?
These questions are useful even if you expect to stay with your existing insurer. They separate broad assurances from answers about the actual collection and policy. If the response is unclear, ask the agent to identify the relevant limit, definition, or policy wording rather than relying on a verbal summary. Keep the written response with the policy and inventory.

Pay particular attention to loss scenarios you care about. Do not infer that theft, fire, accidental breakage, water damage, flood, or mysterious disappearance is covered simply because the collection is insured in some general sense. Progressive says flood damage is typically outside the personal-property coverage it describes, while Liberty Mutual advises asking directly whether breakage is covered. Those statements are prompts for questions, not universal rules: check the wording of the policy being offered.
Compare the coverage routes on their actual terms
If your insurer offers more than one path, compare the protections and obligations rather than choosing by the headline coverage amount. Scheduling an item or collection may extend an existing policy; a separate valuables or collectibles policy may use a different structure. Availability and wording vary by insurer, policy, and applicant.
Ask whether the proposal is an endorsement or floater attached to your current homeowners or renters policy, a personal articles policy, or a separate collectibles or valuables policy. Those labels alone do not tell you what a particular contract covers. Establish whether items must be scheduled individually or can be included under blanket coverage, and whether the proposed limit is for each item or the collection as a whole.
| What to compare | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Limits | Total collection limit, per-item limit, and any category sublimit; whether coverage is blanket or each item must be scheduled. |
| Valuation and claim settlement | The policy’s definition of value, settlement basis, and the records or appraisal needed to support a claim. |
| Deductible | The deductible for the collection and whether it differs from the underlying homeowners or renters policy. |
| Covered causes and exclusions | Whether theft, fire, breakage, water damage, flood, or disappearance are addressed, and which exclusions apply. Progressive says flood damage is typically outside the personal-property coverage it describes; that is not a rule for every policy. Liberty Mutual advises asking directly about breakage. |
| Location and transit | Whether coverage follows the collection away from home, while traveling, on display, in temporary storage, or during shipping. |
| New acquisitions and updates | Whether newly acquired items receive automatic coverage, for how long and up to what limit, and when you must report or schedule additions. |
| Documentation duties | Required inventory detail, appraisals, receipts, photographs, and any update schedule. |
| Cost and policy relationship | The premium and any effect on the underlying homeowners or renters policy. |
Use the same questions for each available option so the comparison is meaningful. For example, a policy with a larger stated limit may still be a poor fit if the deductible, valuation basis, covered causes, or exclusions do not suit your needs. Conversely, a more specialized policy is not automatically better for every collection. Compare the written terms that apply to you, not just the product name or a general coverage summary.
Location deserves its own check. Ask whether coverage applies only at the insured home or also while the collection is being shipped, displayed, traveled with, or temporarily stored elsewhere. Do not assume that coverage at home extends to every other location or circumstance. Similarly, ask how newly acquired sets are treated, whether any temporary automatic coverage exists, and what time limit or maximum applies before you must report or schedule additions.
For each option, request the relevant policy wording or written terms and check that the answers apply to your collection and location. General statements about a product are not a substitute for the issued contract.

Know when an appraisal is required
There is no universal appraisal rule for collectibles coverage. State Farm says requirements vary by insurer, policy, collectible type, and value. Chubb’s current U.S. personal-collections page says it requires appraisals for individual collectibles valued at $100,000 or more; for other items, it asks for a detailed description and estimated value. That is a feature stated for Chubb’s product, not an industry threshold or confirmation that LEGO qualifies. Confirm eligibility and requirements directly with any insurer.
Before paying for an appraisal, ask the insurer whether one is required for your collection, whether it recommends one, and what type of report it accepts. Requirements may depend on both value and the kind of collectible, and the sources do not establish a single threshold that applies across companies. If an appraisal is not required, the insurer may still ask for a detailed description and estimated value or other supporting records. Find out what it wants before commissioning work so the report addresses the question the insurer actually needs answered.
If you do obtain an appraisal, ask about the appraiser’s relevant experience, credentials, method, fee, and written report. Keep the report with your inventory, but confirm how often the insurer expects values to be reviewed. State Farm says there is no one reappraisal schedule for every collection; ask the appraiser when a new valuation is appropriate and review the policy periodically.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Review the record as the collection changes
Update the inventory when you acquire, sell, or materially change items, and tell the insurer when the policy requires it. Significant additions can alter the collection’s value and the amount of coverage needed. State Farm says there is no single reappraisal schedule for every collection; ask an appraiser when an updated valuation is appropriate and review your policy periodically.
Do not assume that a newly acquired set is automatically covered, or that any automatic coverage lasts indefinitely. Ask how quickly you must report an addition, whether new items receive temporary coverage, and whether there is a limit during that period. Apply the same habit when you sell items or the collection’s composition changes: keep the inventory current and ask whether the change affects a scheduled amount or other policy information.
Review the policy when the collection’s value or circumstances change, and periodically even if there has been no major change. Check that descriptions, values, limits, location information, and documentation requirements remain accurate. There is no source-backed universal calendar for reappraisals; let the insurer’s requirements and an appraiser’s advice guide when a new valuation is useful.

What a specialist policy may offer—and what to verify
Chubb’s U.S. personal-collections page advertises blanket or scheduled treatment, an agreed-value feature for covered total losses, and coverage for newly acquired items for up to 90 days subject to a stated limit. These are product-page terms, not guarantees for every applicant or policy. Confirm that LEGO is eligible, that the terms are available in your jurisdiction, and that the issued policy provides the protection you expect. See Chubb’s personal collections information.
Use product features as a starting point for questions, not as a substitute for a quote and policy review. Ask what “agreed value” means in the issued contract and which losses qualify for that settlement feature. For newly acquired items, verify the duration, limit, and reporting requirements rather than relying on the advertised period alone. Also confirm whether coverage can be blanket or must be scheduled, how the insurer will document LEGO items, and whether the offered policy is available to you.
The reviewed guidance supports comparing collectibles or valuable personal-property insurance as a service; it does not establish that any named insurer accepts LEGO collections or offer a particular price. An inventory spreadsheet, camera, or secure storage may help with organization, but none is a required insurance purchase based on the sources reviewed. Verify eligibility, jurisdiction, and policy terms before choosing a provider.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I insure my LEGO collection?
Make a set-by-set inventory with identifying details, condition, photographs, and available purchase records or prior valuations. Then ask your homeowners or renters insurer how the actual policy treats the collection, including limits, sublimits, valuation, deductible, covered losses, location, and new acquisitions. If the existing terms do not fit, compare an endorsement, personal articles policy, or separate collectibles policy. Confirm LEGO eligibility and get the applicable terms in writing.
Does homeowners insurance cover collectibles?
It may provide personal-property coverage, but do not assume the general limit is the amount a collectible would receive. A policy can have category sublimits, deductibles, covered-peril restrictions, exclusions, or a valuation method that changes the result. The policy language controls; ask your insurer whether LEGO is covered and how the specific terms apply.
Do I need an appraisal for collectibles insurance?
Not always. Requirements vary by insurer, policy, collectible type, and value. Ask the insurer what appraisal or other evidence it requires before hiring an appraiser. If one is appropriate, look for relevant experience and ask about credentials, methods, fees, and the written report. Chubb’s published $100,000 appraisal threshold for individual collectibles is a feature of its stated product, not a general industry rule.
What should I include in a LEGO collection inventory?
Record the set number and name when known, quantity, sealed/opened/assembled status, condition, and purchase date and price when available. Add photographs, receipts, certificates, provenance, and prior appraisals if you have them. Ask the insurer whether it requires individual entries or accepts blanket coverage, and store a copy of the records separately from the collection.

Progressive notes that flood damage is typically outside the personal-property coverage it describes, and Liberty Mutual advises asking directly about breakage; check the wording of the policy offered to you.
The Bottom Line
Build and securely store a detailed inventory, then ask your insurer how its actual policy values and covers LEGO sets, loose parts, sealed boxes, and assembled models. Compare limits, sublimits, deductibles, covered causes, location and transit protection, documentation duties, new-item rules, and cost before choosing standard, scheduled, or specialist coverage.
