You can run WordPress on one server and keep its MySQL or MariaDB database in a separate managed service. The web host runs PHP and serves the WordPress files; the managed service stores the database. Create the database and a least-privilege user, allow the web host to reach the database endpoint, put the service hostname and port in wp-config.php, upload WordPress, and then complete the normal browser installer.

The arrangement works with Amazon RDS for MySQL or MariaDB, Azure Database for MySQL, Google Cloud MySQL, DigitalOcean MySQL, IBM Cloud Databases for MySQL, and other compatible services when networking, versions, credentials, and TLS are configured correctly. A remote database does not change WordPress’s installation sequence, but it adds network and security checks that a database on the same server does not require.

What a separate managed database changes

A conventional WordPress installation places the web server, PHP runtime, WordPress files, and database on one machine. With a separate managed database, only the first three remain on the web host. The database service provides a MySQL or MariaDB instance, storage, automated maintenance, and—depending on the service—backups, high availability, and point-in-time recovery.

WordPress production support is for MySQL or MariaDB. The WordPress FAQ puts it plainly: “Yes. You certainly need the MySQL or MariaDB database servers to power your WordPress blog.” A managed service is suitable when the web host can reach its endpoint and the service supplies a compatible engine and version.

  • Managed database: WordPress tables, users, settings, posts, metadata, and other database-backed content.
  • Connection path: DNS, routing, firewall or security-group rules, a database port, credentials, and usually TLS.

Keeping the two systems in the same cloud region, availability zone, or private network normally reduces latency and exposure. A public endpoint can work, but it should be restricted to approved source addresses and protected with TLS.

Requirements to check before you start

Compatible software

Current WordPress requirements guidance recommends PHP 8.3 or newer, MySQL 8.0 or newer or MariaDB 10.11 or newer, and HTTPS. Older releases may still run, but versions that have reached end of life no longer receive normal security maintenance and can expose the site to avoidable risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The WordPress Hosting Handbook lists MySQL 8.4 LTS with an April 2032 end-of-life date and MariaDB 11.8 LTS with a June 2030 end-of-life date. A provider may offer a different default, so select a supported release explicitly and confirm its maintenance policy before creating the instance.

Access and information you need

  • A web host with a working PHP installation and an HTTPS-capable domain or temporary URL.
  • A managed MySQL or MariaDB instance that is running and accepting connections.
  • The exact database name, database username, password, hostname, and port supplied by the provider.
  • The provider’s TLS mode, certificate requirements, private-network details, and approved source-address format.
  • Permission to create a database and account, or an administrator who can do so for you.
  • A recent WordPress package downloaded from the official WordPress distribution channel.

Do not assume that the service’s dashboard label is the value WordPress needs. A resource name, connection-string name, and DNS hostname can be different. Copy the endpoint exactly, including its port when the provider uses a non-default port.

Choose the database architecture

Private endpoint in the same network

A private endpoint or virtual-network connection keeps database traffic off the public internet. You must still configure routes, security groups, firewall rules, DNS, and TLS. Azure’s WordPress guidance shows Flexible Server integrated into a virtual network; that model illustrates why routing and access controls are part of the design rather than an optional hardening step.

Public endpoint with an allowlist

A public endpoint is easier to connect from a basic web host, but the database firewall should allow only the web host’s fixed egress address or a tightly controlled range. Never open the database port to every internet address. If the web host’s address changes, the allowlist must be updated or connections will fail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Same region and latency

WordPress performs many small database operations during page requests, administration, cron jobs, and plugin activity. Put the web and database services in the same region where practical. Cross-region traffic can add latency and transfer charges, and a transient network path can make the site appear unreliable even when both servers are healthy.

Create the managed database and WordPress account

  1. Create or select the instance. Choose MySQL or MariaDB, a supported major version, the intended region, storage, and availability options. Wait until the provider reports the instance as running.
  2. Create a dedicated database. Use a name that identifies this site and is valid for the provider’s identifier rules. Do not share one WordPress database among unrelated sites unless you have a deliberate isolation plan.
  3. Create a dedicated login. Generate a long, unique password and store it in a password manager or secret store. Do not reuse a hosting-panel password.
  4. Grant only the required database privileges. The account must be able to create, read, update, and delete the tables WordPress manages. Grant privileges on this site’s database rather than on every database in the instance. If a plugin later requires an unusual privilege, evaluate that request separately instead of starting with an administrator account.
  5. Record connection details. Save the database name, username, password, endpoint hostname, port, TLS mode, certificate information, and any required connection attributes.

Some managed services create the database during instance creation; others require a separate SQL command or dashboard action. The result is the same: WordPress needs a reachable database name and a login that can use it.

Allow the web host to connect

Before uploading WordPress, make the network path work. In the managed service, configure the firewall, security group, private endpoint, virtual-network rule, or approved source address to permit the web host to reach the database port. In a private design, confirm that the web host’s subnet has a route to the database subnet and that private DNS resolves the service hostname.

Use the provider’s port rather than assuming 3306. MySQL commonly uses 3306, but a provider can expose another port or require a socket or named pipe. A successful DNS lookup alone does not prove that a TCP connection is allowed.

From the web host, test in this order:

  1. Resolve the exact database hostname with the host’s DNS tools.
  2. Test TCP reachability to the supplied port.
  3. Use a MySQL client, if available, to authenticate with the dedicated account and select the database.
  4. Test TLS with the provider’s required mode and certificate options.

Do not place the database password in shell history or paste it into a public support ticket. Remove temporary diagnostic files after testing.

Configure wp-config.php

WordPress can generate the configuration during the browser installer, or you can prepare it first. Copy wp-config-sample.php to wp-config.php in the WordPress document root and set the four connection constants:

define( 'DB_NAME', 'database_name_here' );
define( 'DB_USER', 'username_here' );
define( 'DB_PASSWORD', 'password_here' );
define( 'DB_HOST', 'managed-db.example.com' );

Replace each placeholder with the values from the managed service. DB_HOST is the database hostname, not the website hostname and not a URL beginning with https://. When a non-default port is required, append it with a colon:

define( 'DB_HOST', 'managed-db.example.com:3307' );

WordPress also documents appending a socket or pipe when the environment requires one. Use the exact syntax specified by the host or database provider; do not append a port and socket together unless that provider documents the combination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect the file with the web server’s normal configuration so visitors cannot download it. Keep file ownership and permissions consistent with the rest of the WordPress installation while ensuring that the PHP process can read the file.

TLS and certificate settings

A managed provider may require encrypted connections or may offer a mode that verifies the server certificate and hostname. Follow that provider’s PHP/MySQL driver instructions and install its current certificate authority bundle when required. Disabling certificate verification can hide a man-in-the-middle risk; do not treat it as a permanent fix for a certificate or hostname error.

Upload WordPress and run the installer

  1. Download WordPress. Obtain the current release from the official distribution channel and verify that the archive is intact before extraction.
  2. Place the files. Upload the contents to the intended document root or a subdirectory. Preserve filenames, directories, and case exactly.
  3. Set the configuration. Put the completed wp-config.php in the WordPress root, or leave the sample in place if you want the installer to create the file.
  4. Open the site URL. Visit the domain or subdirectory over HTTPS. If the files and database connection are valid, WordPress displays its installation form.
  5. Complete site setup. Enter the site title, administrator username, strong password, and an administrator email address. Avoid predictable administrator names and never reuse an email account’s password.
  6. Sign in and test. Open the dashboard, visit the public home page, create a test post, upload a small image, and remove the test content. These checks exercise both database writes and filesystem writes.

The browser installer does not create the managed instance or repair network rules. If it reports that it cannot establish a database connection, return to the connectivity checks rather than repeatedly submitting the form.

Verify the finished installation

  • Confirm that the dashboard loads without database warnings.
  • Create and edit a post, page, menu item, and user to verify ordinary reads and writes.
  • Check that scheduled tasks run. Depending on your setup, WordPress cron may be triggered by visits or by a system scheduler.
  • Inspect the provider’s connection metrics and logs for rejected clients, authentication failures, or connection-limit exhaustion.
  • Confirm that backups are enabled, that the retention period meets your recovery objective, and that at least one restore has been tested in a separate location.
  • Check HTTPS, secure cookies, and the absence of database credentials in web-accessible files or logs.

Provider comparison criteria

The WordPress Hosting Handbook lists Amazon RDS for MySQL, Amazon RDS for MariaDB, Azure Database for MySQL, Google Cloud MySQL, DigitalOcean MySQL, IBM Cloud Databases for MySQL, and other MySQL-compatible services as services known to perform well. WordPress does not regularly test every listed service, so treat the list as a compatibility starting point, not a ranking or guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Criterion Questions to ask Why it matters to WordPress
Engine and lifecycle Is the offered MySQL or MariaDB version supported by current WordPress guidance? How long are security updates provided? An obsolete engine can become a security and compatibility liability.
Network topology Are private endpoints available? Can you restrict the firewall to the web host? Does private DNS work from the application network? Routing and access controls determine whether WordPress can connect and whether traffic is exposed publicly.
TLS Is encryption required? Which CA certificate and hostname must the PHP driver verify? Correct TLS protects credentials and data while avoiding insecure workarounds.
Backups and recovery Are automated backups, point-in-time recovery, snapshots, and restore testing included? A backup that has never been restored is not a proven recovery plan.
Capacity and scaling What are the storage limits, connection limits, read/write capacity, failover behavior, and upgrade process? Plugins, traffic spikes, imports, and background jobs can exhaust a small instance or its connection pool.
Region and availability Can the database run near the web host? What redundancy and maintenance windows are offered? Distance adds latency; redundancy affects outage behavior.
Cost and responsibility How are compute hours, storage, backups, transfer, and high availability billed? Which maintenance tasks remain yours? Official WordPress and provider documentation does not establish current pricing; compare the live plans for your region and workload.

Microsoft describes Azure Database for MySQL as a “fully managed database as a service offering” and documents deploying WordPress with it. That is an example implementation, not evidence that one provider is universally best.

Common connection failures and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Action
Unknown host or DNS error The hostname is misspelled, private DNS is unavailable, or the endpoint has changed. Copy the endpoint again from the provider, resolve it from the web host, and fix private DNS or routing.
Connection timed out A firewall, security group, route, network ACL, or incorrect port blocks traffic. Allow the web host’s source address to the exact database port and verify the route and instance status.
Connection refused The service is stopped, the port is wrong, or the endpoint is not listening for that network. Check the managed instance state, port, private/public endpoint, and maintenance event.
Access denied for user The username or password is wrong, the account is restricted by source host, or privileges are missing. Reset the password if necessary, verify the account’s allowed host, select the correct database, and grant site-specific privileges.
Unknown database DB_NAME does not match the created database, including case or spelling differences. Copy the database name exactly and confirm that the account can see it.
SSL or certificate error The provider requires TLS, the CA bundle is missing, or the hostname does not match the certificate. Install the provider’s CA, use the documented verification mode, and connect to the certificate’s hostname.
Too many connections The instance’s connection limit is exhausted by traffic, plugins, workers, or a leak. Inspect connection metrics, reduce unnecessary persistent connections, tune PHP workers and plugins, and scale the database if demand is legitimate.
Intermittent database errors Cross-region latency, failover, overloaded capacity, DNS caching, or a transient provider event. Check provider events and metrics, keep the services close geographically, and review timeout and retry behavior without masking persistent failures.

The WordPress installation handbook’s recommended troubleshooting order is practical: recheck the database information, user permissions, and server availability. For a remote service, add DNS, port, firewall, route, TLS, and endpoint-state checks to that sequence.

Security and operations after installation

Limit exposure

Prefer a private network. If a public endpoint is unavoidable, allow only the web host’s fixed egress address, require TLS, use a dedicated account, rotate credentials, and monitor rejected connection attempts. Never grant the WordPress account global administrative privileges just to make installation easier.

Back up both database and files

A database backup alone does not restore themes, plugins, media, or configuration. Pair managed database backups with a tested backup of the WordPress files and uploads. Record the recovery steps, including how to recreate network access and secrets, and periodically restore to an isolated instance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan upgrades and failover

Keep PHP, WordPress core, themes, and plugins within their supported ranges. Test major database upgrades against a copy of the site before production. Know whether a failover changes the hostname, certificate, port, or required allowlist, and document how DNS and application settings are updated.

Watch the metrics that affect WordPress

  • CPU, memory, storage growth, and I/O latency.
  • Active, idle, and rejected connections.
  • Slow queries and lock waits.
  • Backup completion and restore-test results.
  • Replication or high-availability health, if enabled.
  • Application errors correlated with database maintenance or failover events.

When a separate managed database is a good fit

This design is useful when the web tier and database need independent scaling, when backups and maintenance should be handled by a database service, or when a team already operates a private cloud network. It is less attractive for a small site whose host already provides a reliable local database and whose operators do not need separate scaling or recovery controls. A remote database adds latency, network dependencies, provider charges, and another set of credentials to protect.

Make the decision on workload and operational needs, not on the word “managed” alone. Confirm compatibility, network placement, backups, scaling limits, region, and total cost before committing. Once those conditions are satisfied, WordPress itself installs normally: database and user first, configuration second, files third, browser installer last.
