To install Windows 11 updates, connect to the internet, open Start > Settings > Windows Update, select Check for Windows updates, then choose Download & install when it appears. Restart when Windows requests it. To verify what was installed, use Update history; to understand the changes, identify your Windows version and open that version’s Microsoft update-history page for the relevant KB entry.
Install Windows 11 updates from Settings
Windows 11’s supported manual update path is built into Settings. You do not need a separate updater for ordinary monthly updates. Microsoft documents the workflow in its Install Windows Updates guidance.
Before you start
- Connect the PC to a reliable internet connection.
- If you are using a laptop or tablet, connect its charger. Microsoft recommends keeping portable devices plugged in while updates install so the process is not interrupted by a low battery.
- Save open documents and close applications before a restart.
- If you need to avoid an inconvenient reboot, check your active-hours settings or plan a restart time instead of postponing indefinitely.
Run the update check
- Select Start, then open Settings.
- Select Windows Update in the Settings sidebar.
- Select Check for Windows updates.
- If Windows lists an available update, select Download & install and follow any prompts.
- Restart when Windows asks. Some updates cannot finish until the computer reboots.
When the installation finishes, return to Settings > Windows Update. The page shows the current status and any updates still available. A message that the device is up to date means Windows found no applicable update at that moment; it does not mean every Windows 11 device worldwide has the same build or features.
Reduce interruptions from automatic restarts
Windows normally downloads and installs updates automatically, but a restart may still be necessary. In Windows Update settings, use active hours so Windows knows when you normally work, or use the restart-scheduling option offered with a pending update. Scheduling changes only the reboot time; it does not remove the requirement to restart when the update needs it.

Check whether Windows 11 is up to date
Use two different areas of Settings for two different questions:
| Question | Where to look | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Is anything currently available? | Start > Settings > Windows Update | The current status, pending downloads, installation state and restart requirement. |
| What has already been installed? | Start > Settings > Windows Update > Update history | The updates Windows installed and the dates associated with them. |
| Which Windows release is installed? | Start > Settings > System > About, under Windows specifications | The edition, version and build information needed to interpret release notes. |
Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ describes the purpose of the history page plainly: “An update history is available so you can see which updates were installed, and when.” Open Windows Update: FAQ for Microsoft’s explanations of update behavior and terminology.
Use winver as a second way to identify the version
Select the taskbar Search box, type winver, and press Enter. The About Windows dialog displays the Windows version and OS build. You can cross-check that result with Settings > System > About. Version matters because a KB released for one Windows 11 version may not apply to another.
Understand what kind of update you are seeing
Not every entry in Update history represents the same type of change. Microsoft separates the broad categories below, although the boundaries are not absolute.
| Update type | Primary purpose | Typical timing and content | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feature update | Adds or expands Windows capabilities and moves the device to a newer version. | Microsoft says feature updates are typically released once per year. They can contain substantial user-facing changes. | Read the version-specific history page and check whether the rollout is available for your device. |
| Quality update | Delivers security fixes, reliability improvements and smaller bug fixes. | Arrives more frequently than a feature update. A quality update can sometimes include a feature, so the label alone does not describe every change. | Open the exact KB entry to distinguish fixes, security changes, new behavior and known issues. |
| Preview or optional release | Publishes changes before or outside the normal monthly security installation path. | May be offered as a preview and may have a different installation cadence from the regular security update. | Read the release notes carefully before choosing an optional installation. |
Do not compare two KB entries as if they were interchangeable when they target different Windows versions, builds or device groups. The applicable version, rollout stage and listed known issues are part of the update’s identity.

Find exactly what changed in an update
1. Identify the installed Windows version
Go to Start > Settings > System > About and locate Windows specifications > Version. Record the version and, if useful for troubleshooting, the OS build. You can also use winver from taskbar Search.
2. Open the matching Microsoft update-history page
Use the history page for your version, not a generic article about another release. Microsoft maintains separate pages, including Windows 11, version 25H2 update history and Windows 11, version 26H1 update history.

3. Select the KB or release date
Find the KB number shown in Update history and select the corresponding entry on the version page. The entry normally separates the release date, OS build, improvements, fixes, known issues and additional details. Read the known-issues section even when the update installed successfully; it can explain a later symptom that is already documented by Microsoft.
4. Check release health information
The version-history pages point to Microsoft’s Windows release health information for the latest known-issue status. Use that information when a problem began after installation or when an issue’s mitigation has changed. Release notes are time-sensitive: a page can gain a new entry after the original publication date.
5. Separate availability from documentation
A feature listed in release notes is not necessarily active on every eligible computer on the same day. Microsoft says, “Each feature update rolls out in a phased and measured manner.” Staged enablement, device compatibility and policy controls can make a feature appear later than the date printed on the release page.

Example: how to read a real release entry
Microsoft’s July 28, 2026 preview entry, KB5101684 (OS Builds 26200.8973 and 26100.8973) Preview, applies to Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2. It illustrates why the KB, version and rollout wording all matter.
- The page identifies two OS builds rather than treating every Windows 11 installation as one build.
- It describes a gradual rollout as well as normal rollout behavior, so a documented change may not appear immediately on every device.
- The documented changes include File Explorer size-display behavior and Windows Search improvements, alongside fixes and known information.
- A changelog addition dated August 14, 2026 says eligible updates are installed with the monthly security update whenever possible, while expedited or critical updates may still be delivered separately.
This example is useful for learning how to interpret release notes; it is not a blanket recommendation to install that preview. Match the entry to your version, build, update offer and reason for installing.
Why the latest Windows 11 update may not appear
Phased feature rollout
Feature releases are deliberately staged. Microsoft can make a release available to one group of compatible devices before another. Waiting can therefore be normal, especially when the Windows Update page reports that the device is current.
Compatibility or safeguard hold
Windows may withhold a feature update when a known hardware, driver or software compatibility issue affects the device. Installing a version manually without checking eligibility can create avoidable problems. Follow the offer shown in Windows Update and consult the version’s known-issues information.
Different installed version
A page or news item may describe 25H2 while the PC is on another version. Confirm the local version under System > About before deciding that an update is missing.

Version 26H1 has a specific eligibility limitation
Microsoft’s version 26H1 history states that Windows 11 version 26H1 is for select new devices and is not offered as an in-place update through Windows Update to existing devices. Check the computer’s own Windows version and the update offer it receives; do not assume that every existing Windows 11 PC will be offered 26H1.
The update is available but requires a restart
Windows can download an update and wait for a restart before reporting completion. Reopen Windows Update after restarting and inspect Update history rather than relying only on a notification.
What to do when an update will not install
Start with Microsoft’s troubleshooting route
Use the troubleshooting guidance linked from Microsoft’s Install Windows Updates page. Record the exact error text or code, the KB number, your Windows version and whether the failure happened during download, installation or restart. Those details prevent you from applying advice for the wrong failure stage.
Free storage before trying anything more complicated
Insufficient disk space is a common installation blocker. Microsoft’s suggested remedies are:
- Delete unneeded files, including temporary items you no longer require.
- Uninstall applications you do not use.
- Move personal files to another drive to free space on the Windows drive.
An external USB drive can be one optional destination for moved files, but ordinary Windows updates do not require you to buy a drive. After freeing space, restart the PC, return to Windows Update and select Check for Windows updates again.

If a newer feature version is not offered
Microsoft notes that the Windows Update Assistant can provide a manual route where applicable. Verify the current official instructions and the device’s eligibility before using it. Do not use an assistant to bypass a compatibility hold simply because a version is visible on a release page.
If installation repeatedly rolls back
- Write down the KB and build shown in Update history.
- Check the matching version-history page and release-health information for a known issue.
- Disconnect nonessential peripherals while retrying, particularly if the failure began after a driver or device change.
- Keep the laptop connected to power and avoid forcing a shutdown during the installation or rollback.
A practical verification checklist
Use this sequence after any update attempt:
- Open Settings > Windows Update and read the current status.
- If Windows requests a restart, schedule or perform it.
- Open Update history and confirm the KB and installation date.
- Open System > About and record the Windows version and build.
- Open the matching Microsoft version-history page and select that KB.
- Read the changes, fixes and known issues, then compare them with any symptom you are investigating.
- Return to Windows Update and select Check for Windows updates once more to see whether another applicable update remains.
How to interpret release notes without overestimating a change
“Listed” does not always mean “enabled now”
Release notes document what Microsoft is delivering in a release. Staged rollout means the code or capability can be present in the release while activation remains controlled by device eligibility or a gradual deployment schedule.
Fixes and features can share one KB
A quality update is mainly maintenance and security work, but Microsoft says quality updates can sometimes include features. Read the individual bullets instead of assuming the category tells you everything.

A release note is not only a list of benefits. A known issue can affect a specific app, driver, hardware configuration or workflow. If the issue applies to your PC, waiting for mitigation may be safer than forcing the update through an alternate route.
Date context matters
Preview entries, monthly security releases and later revisions can describe different states of the same change. Note the publication date, build number and any dated changelog addition before applying advice from an older entry.
Important distinctions about Windows 11 update availability
| Situation | What you should conclude | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update says “You’re up to date.” | No applicable update is currently offered to that device. | Check Update history and your version; do not infer that every device has the newest feature release. |
| A feature appears in release notes but not on the PC. | The feature may be in a phased rollout or subject to eligibility controls. | Check the version page and wait for the device’s official offer unless Microsoft documents another eligible route. |
| A KB is listed online but not in Update history. | The KB may target another Windows version, build, edition or rollout group. | Match the KB to your local version and build before troubleshooting. |
| Windows reports insufficient space. | The installation cannot complete with the available storage. | Delete unneeded files, uninstall unused apps or move files to another drive, then retry. |
| Version 26H1 is discussed but not offered. | Existing devices are not generally upgraded to 26H1 through Windows Update. | Confirm whether the PC is one of the select new devices covered by Microsoft’s 26H1 eligibility statement. |
Where each answer is found
- Install now: Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for Windows updates, then Download & install.
- Confirm installed updates: Windows Update > Update history.
- Confirm the Windows version: Settings > System > About > Windows specifications, or run
winver. - Read changes and known issues: select the matching KB on the official history page for that Windows version.
- Investigate current problems: consult the version page’s Windows release-health information and the exact known-issue entry.
Microsoft’s update pages change as new releases, mitigations and known issues are published. For that reason, use the live version-history and release-health pages linked above when making a decision about a pending update, rather than relying on a static summary.
