Install Visual Studio Professional from Microsoft’s official download route, run the bootstrapper as an administrator, and select the workload that matches what you plan to build. When setup finishes, open Visual Studio, choose Create a new project, search for a template, apply the language or platform filters, and create the project.
The exact templates and required components depend on the workloads you install. Start with the workload for your immediate goal rather than selecting everything; you can add workloads and individual components later through Visual Studio Installer.
Before you install: check the machine, version, and account
Visual Studio is a Windows development environment with a modular installer. Before downloading Professional, confirm three things: the Visual Studio release you need, that the computer meets that release’s requirements, and that the account running setup has administrator permissions.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Verify the Visual Studio version
Microsoft’s installation documentation links to both the Visual Studio 2022 release history and the current release history. Choose the current release unless your organization, project, SDK, extension, or compatibility requirement specifies another supported version. The installer interface and requirements can change between releases, so do not assume that figures documented for Visual Studio 2022 apply to every later version. Start with Microsoft’s Visual Studio installation guide and follow its link to the release history for the version you require.

Confirm administrator access and Windows readiness
- Use a Windows account that can approve administrator prompts. The Visual Studio bootstrapper and installer require administrator permissions.
- Apply available Windows updates. Restart if Windows reports pending installations or a restart that could interfere with setup.
- Free enough disk space for the workloads and components you select, plus temporary download and installation files.
- Close applications that may hold files the installer needs to update.
These preparation steps are part of Microsoft’s documented installation workflow. If this is a managed work computer, your organization may control administrator rights, software sources, or allowed Visual Studio versions; ask your IT administrator before starting.
Use the right Professional account
If your organization provides Visual Studio through a subscription, sign in with the account assigned that subscription. Subscription eligibility, benefits, and purchase routes depend on the subscription category and the organization’s terms; Microsoft’s Visual Studio IDE subscription documentation explains the sign-in and eligibility considerations. The installer cannot determine whether a particular organization has chosen the correct license for your use case.
What computer do you need for Visual Studio Professional?
The figures below are Microsoft’s published requirements for the Visual Studio 2022 product family, not a universal specification for every Visual Studio release. Check the requirements page for the exact version you are installing before relying on them.
| Resource | Visual Studio 2022 figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | 4 GB RAM minimum | The minimum published by Microsoft; larger solutions and multiple tools need more headroom. |
| Memory for typical professional solutions | 16 GB RAM recommended | Microsoft’s recommendation for typical professional solutions, not a guarantee of performance for every workload. |
| Storage | 850 MB to 210 GB, depending on selected features | The range covers different feature selections. Microsoft says typical installations require about 20–50 GB. |
| Display | 1366×768 minimum (WXGA) | Microsoft says 1920×1080 or higher works best. |
| Drive | SSD recommended | Microsoft recommends installing Windows and Visual Studio on an SSD to improve performance. |
See Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2022 system requirements for the supported operating systems and the full version-specific list. Do not treat the 850 MB–210 GB range as the size of every Professional installation: your selected workloads, optional components, language packs, SDKs, and cached files determine the actual footprint.
How do I install Visual Studio Professional?
Use Microsoft’s official download and installer flow rather than a third-party download site. The process has four decisions: edition, release, workloads, and installation location.

1. Open Microsoft’s official download route
- Open the official Visual Studio installation documentation.
- Choose the Professional edition and the supported release that matches your project or organization. If you need a particular older supported release, use Microsoft’s release-history link from that page instead of downloading an unknown installer elsewhere.
- Save the Visual Studio bootstrapper to a location you can find, such as your Downloads folder.
Edition selection is a licensing decision as well as a technical one. Microsoft’s C++ setup guidance describes Community as intended for individual development, classroom learning, academic research, and open-source work, and directs other uses toward Professional or Enterprise. That guidance is not a determination of your organization’s license; check your subscription or procurement terms before installing.
2. Run the bootstrapper with administrator permissions
- Open the downloaded bootstrapper.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt when Windows displays it. If you cannot approve it, sign in with an authorized administrator or ask your IT administrator to run the installer.
- Review and acknowledge the Visual Studio License Terms and Privacy Statement when the installer requests them.
- Wait while the bootstrapper opens Visual Studio Installer and retrieves the current setup information.
The bootstrapper is the small program that starts Visual Studio Installer; it is not the complete feature set by itself. The installer then presents workloads and individual components for your selection.

3. Select only the workloads you need now
A workload is a curated feature set for a type of development. Workloads determine which project templates appear in the New Project dialog, so an apparently missing template is often a missing workload rather than a broken project system.
| Your immediate goal | Workload direction | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Web applications and services | Select ASP.NET and web development. | Confirm that the language, SDK, and web tooling required by your project are included or add them under Individual components. |
| Cross-platform C# or C++ work | Choose the desktop or mobile workload that matches the target platform and language. | Read the workload summary; platform SDKs and optional tooling may differ. |
| Native C++ development | Choose the C++ desktop or other C++ workload appropriate to the target. | Check compiler, Windows SDK, and other required components in the workload details. |
| An unfamiliar language or project type | Search the workload summaries for the application type, language, or platform. | After installation, confirm that the expected template appears in Create a new project. |
The names and included components can vary by Visual Studio release. Read each workload’s summary before selecting it. Required components for a selected workload are installed by default; recommended and optional components can be selected when you need them. Microsoft’s Professional workload and component reference lists the component IDs and relationships.
4. Review individual components
Switch to the Individual components tab when a workload’s default selection does not provide a required SDK, compiler, debugging tool, language pack, or other feature. Add only components that serve a known requirement. Installing every optional component increases download time and disk usage without making unrelated templates more useful.

5. Choose the installation location carefully
Visual Studio Installer lets you choose locations that affect the IDE, downloaded packages, and installation cache. Decide how much space to reserve on each drive before clicking Install. Microsoft documents these location choices as an initial-installation decision; changing drives later can require uninstalling and reinstalling Visual Studio. Keep the IDE and frequently used development files on a fast SSD when possible.
6. Start the installation
- Review the selected workloads, individual components, language packs, and estimated storage.
- Click Install.
- Keep the computer connected to power and the network while setup downloads and configures the selected features.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it, then launch Visual Studio from the Start menu.
Installation time depends on the release, workloads, network speed, disk performance, and whether required packages are already cached. A large workload selection can consume substantially more space than a minimal editor installation.
Which Visual Studio workload do I need?
Choose by the application you intend to build, not by the fact that you are using Professional. The core editor is included, while language services, compilers, SDKs, designers, and debugging tools arrive through workloads and components.
When to choose a web workload
For an ASP.NET or other Microsoft web project, start with ASP.NET and web development. If a tutorial specifies a particular .NET SDK, browser tooling, database component, or container feature, compare that requirement with the workload’s component list and add the missing item individually.
When to choose desktop or mobile workloads
For a desktop or mobile application, select the workload that matches the language and target platform. Cross-platform C# and C++ projects may use different desktop or mobile feature sets. The correct choice is the one whose summary includes the project type and SDK your project requires.

When a template is not listed
Do not install every workload immediately. First identify the template’s language, platform, and project type, then return to Visual Studio Installer and add the corresponding workload or component. The New Project dialog only offers templates supported by the installed feature set.
How do I create my first project in Visual Studio?
After Visual Studio opens, the common first-project sequence is the same across languages even though template names differ. Microsoft demonstrates this flow in its C and C++ installation guide; use the equivalent template for your language or platform.
- On the start window, select Create a new project. If a solution is already open, use File > New > Project.
- Use the search box to enter the application or project type, such as a web app, console app, desktop app, or library.
- Filter the results by language, platform, and project type. These filters narrow the templates provided by your installed workloads.
- Select the template whose description and prerequisites match your goal, then click Next.
- Enter a project name and choose a location. Use a folder where your account has write access and where source control or backup tools can include the files.
- Review any framework, authentication, or solution-name options shown by the template, then select Create.
- Wait for Visual Studio to generate the project. The new solution opens in Solution Explorer, ready for editing.
Choose a template deliberately
Templates differ by language and workload, so a C++ console template is not a requirement for a C# or web project. Read the template description and inspect its framework or platform choices before creating it. If the template you expect is absent, cancel the dialog and add the relevant workload instead of choosing an unrelated template.
Run the first project
The run command and startup behavior depend on the template. Use the project’s displayed launch target and the Start control after creation. A console project may open a console window, while a web project may launch a browser or local development server. If the first build reports a missing SDK or component, record the exact error and add the required feature through Visual Studio Installer.

How to add workloads or components later
You do not need to predict every future project before installing Professional. Microsoft states: “At any time after installation, you can install workloads or components that you didn’t install initially.”

- From Visual Studio, select Tools > Get Tools and Features. This opens Visual Studio Installer.
- Alternatively, open Visual Studio Installer from the Windows Start menu.
- Find your Professional installation and select Modify.
- On the Workloads tab, select the new workload, or use Individual components for a specific SDK or tool.
- Review the additional disk requirement and select the button to apply the changes.
After modification completes, restart Visual Studio if it was open and search for the previously missing template again. Adding a workload changes the available templates; it does not automatically convert an existing project to a different framework.
Installation choices and trade-offs
Minimal versus broad installation
| Approach | Advantages | Costs and risks |
|---|---|---|
| Install the one relevant workload | Uses less disk space, downloads faster, and keeps the template list easier to navigate. | You may need to modify the installation when a later project requires another SDK or tool. |
| Install several likely workloads | More templates and toolchains are available immediately on a shared development machine. | Requires more storage and update time; unused components still need maintenance. |
| Add components individually | Useful when a workload is mostly correct but lacks one known SDK or feature. | Requires understanding the project’s exact prerequisite and can be harder to reproduce on another machine. |
Current release versus a required older release
The current release is usually the simplest choice for a new project, but an existing solution may require a specific compiler, SDK, extension, or build environment. Use Microsoft’s release-history documentation to identify supported versions. Microsoft’s installation guidance also discusses side-by-side installation, which can be useful when separate projects require different supported releases; verify compatibility and available disk space before installing another copy.
IDE location versus download cache
Installation location settings affect more than the visible IDE. They can determine where packages and caches consume space. Plan the drives before installation because moving these locations later may require removing and reinstalling Visual Studio.

The installer will not start or Windows blocks it
- Confirm that you downloaded the bootstrapper from Microsoft’s official route.
- Right-click the bootstrapper and use the administrator option if your account is permitted to do so.
- If User Account Control credentials are required, have an authorized administrator approve the request.
- Install pending Windows updates and restart before trying again.
The expected project template is missing
- Note the template’s language, platform, and project type from the tutorial or project documentation.
- Open Tools > Get Tools and Features or Visual Studio Installer from Start.
- Select Modify and add the workload associated with that application type.
- Use Individual components if the workload is installed but a specific SDK or tool is absent.
- Reopen Visual Studio and search again from Create a new project.
Setup reports insufficient disk space
Remove unneeded files, choose fewer workloads, or select an installation location with adequate free space before continuing. Remember that Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2022 range is 850 MB to 210 GB depending on features, with typical installations around 20–50 GB; the actual requirement for your selection is shown by the installer and may differ for another release.
A project builds but reports a missing SDK or tool
Read the full error, including the requested SDK version or component name. Compare it with the installed workloads and Individual components, then use Modify to add the missing feature. Do not solve a narrowly identified SDK error by installing unrelated workloads.
The computer is slow during setup or builds
Check whether Windows and Visual Studio are installed on an SSD, close resource-heavy applications, and avoid selecting unnecessary workloads. Microsoft recommends an SSD for performance. Additional RAM may also help larger solutions, but the published 16 GB figure is a recommendation for typical Visual Studio 2022 professional solutions, not a performance guarantee for every project.
Version and licensing cautions
Visual Studio’s labels, supported operating systems, workload names, and requirements can change. The hardware table in this guide is explicitly for Visual Studio 2022; consult the current Microsoft requirements page for a newer release before purchasing hardware or allocating storage.
