To install ViaVersion, stop your supported Minecraft server, download the current ViaVersion JAR from the official Hangar release page, copy it into the server’s plugins folder, and perform a full restart. Current documented builds require Java 17 or newer unless you use a special compatible build. After startup, confirm the plugin loaded with /viaversion and check the console for errors.
What ViaVersion does
ViaVersion is a server-side protocol-compatibility plugin. It translates network protocol differences so clients using supported Minecraft versions can connect to a server running another supported version. This lets an administrator keep a particular server version while accepting clients from additional versions.
ViaVersion does not upgrade the server’s game engine or add newer blocks, mobs, mechanics, commands, or world-generation features. A client may be able to connect through protocol translation while still seeing the gameplay and content provided by the server’s actual Minecraft version. The project describes compatibility and balanced gameplay—not adding newer gameplay content—as its purpose.
Check these requirements first
- Supported server software: CraftBukkit, Spigot, Paper, or Velocity are documented platforms. Heavily modified forks may behave differently and are not necessarily officially supported.
- Java: Current ViaVersion builds require Java 17 or newer, unless you deliberately obtain a special build intended for an older Java runtime.
- File access: You need access to the server’s files so you can place a JAR in the correct plugin directory.
- Restart control: You must be able to stop and start the server. ViaVersion should not be activated with a plugin manager or
/reload. - Proxy administration: On a network using Velocity or BungeeCord, you need access to the proxy and/or the backend servers, depending on where you install the plugin.
- Current proxy software: If a proxy is involved, keep it updated. An outdated proxy can cause protocol or connection errors even when ViaVersion itself is correctly installed.
Before downloading anything, identify the process that actually accepts players: a standalone Paper or Spigot server, a Velocity proxy, a BungeeCord proxy, or a proxy network with multiple backend servers. That determines the correct plugin placement.

Install ViaVersion on Paper, Spigot, or CraftBukkit
For a normal server without a proxy, use this complete-stop, copy, and restart procedure.
- Stop the server cleanly. Use the hosting panel’s Stop control or enter
stopin the server console and wait until the process exits. Do not replace plugin files while the server is writing them. - Download the current release. Open the ViaVersion project on Hangar and download the current release JAR. Use the release intended for your server platform; do not rename an unrelated file and assume it is ViaVersion.
- Open the server directory. Locate the root directory containing folders such as
plugins,world, and the server JAR. If the host uses a file manager, this is normally the directory shown when you first connect. - Copy the JAR into
plugins. Upload or move the downloaded file so the path is equivalent toyour-server/plugins/ViaVersion.jar. Do not put it beside the server JAR, inside a world folder, or in a client-side mods directory. - Start the server again. Use the panel’s Start control or launch the server normally. A full stop followed by a start is preferable to any in-game reload command.
- Read the startup log. Look for a message showing that ViaVersion enabled successfully. Stop and investigate if the log reports an unsupported Java version, a missing dependency, a malformed JAR, or another plugin exception.
- Check the plugin in-game or from the console. Run
/viaversion. The command displays the installed ViaVersion version and available commands.
If the plugin does not appear after the restart, verify that the file has a .jar extension, is in the active server’s plugins directory, and was not uploaded to a different instance on the same host.
Verify operation with ViaVersion commands
Use the built-in commands before changing configuration or adding more plugins. Permission requirements depend on your server’s command-permission setup; the console can run administrative commands without an in-game permission node.

A successful command response does not prove that every client/server combination will behave identically. Test with the client versions you intend to allow, then review the console while connecting. Keep the startup log and any diagnostic output available if a connection is rejected.
Choose the right location on a proxy network
With Velocity or BungeeCord, ViaVersion can be installed on the proxy or on servers behind the proxy, but the choice affects where protocol translation occurs. The official documentation says that a proxy setup needs ViaVersion on either the proxy or the backend servers, not automatically on every component. ViaSetup recommends the backend-server arrangement for Paper/Spigot networks.
Backend-server installation
Install ViaVersion on each backend Paper or Spigot server that needs to accept translated clients. This is the arrangement recommended by ViaSetup for Paper/Spigot networks. It keeps translation close to the server handling the connection and can make backend-specific behavior easier to reason about.

- Stop each affected backend before changing its plugin files.
- Place the ViaVersion JAR in each backend’s
pluginsfolder. - Restart every changed backend completely.
- Use
/viaversion probefrom the proxy environment when you need to scan backend protocol versions.
Do not assume that installing ViaVersion on one backend automatically enables compatibility on every other backend. Each server that must perform translation needs the plugin according to the network’s design.
Velocity placement
For a Velocity network, decide whether the proxy or the Paper/Spigot backends should perform translation, then keep that design consistent with your other Via* components. The proxy must be kept current, and the startup logs of both layers should be checked after an update. Translation at a different layer can change what the backend sees, including some 1.8 behavior, and may affect anti-cheat performance.
BungeeCord placement
ViaSetup’s BungeeCord arrangement puts ViaBungee in the BungeeCord plugins folder, while ViaVersion and its addons go in /plugins/ViaVersion/ as directed by that setup. Follow the generator’s instructions for the exact versions in your network rather than mixing files from unrelated releases.
After changing a proxy or backend, restart the changed process fully. A proxy restart alone will not load a JAR copied to a backend, and a backend restart alone will not load a proxy plugin.

Understand client-version support and addons
The exact compatibility range changes with the ViaVersion release and the server platform, so use the official ViaSetup generator for your server version when planning a network. The official compatibility examples include the following:

When ViaBackwards is needed
Base ViaVersion support does not cover every older client. ViaBackwards can add documented backward support for clients from 1.9 through 1.21 on the supported servers. Install it only when your target client range requires that older-to-newer translation, and use the addon build intended for your ViaVersion release.
When ViaRewind is needed
ViaRewind can extend support to 1.8 and 1.7 clients. This is particularly relevant when an older community or minigame server must accept those clients. Older protocol paths can expose compatibility issues that do not appear with modern clients, so test the actual game modes and plugins after enabling the addon.

ViaBackwards and ViaRewind translate protocol traffic; they do not backport newer gameplay systems into an older server. A translated client may connect while lacking a feature that the server version never implemented.
Standalone server or proxy network?
The simplest installation is a single Paper, Spigot, or CraftBukkit process. There is one plugins directory, one restart, and one log to inspect. A proxy network adds a placement decision and multiple restart points, but it can centralize or distribute translation according to the network design.

Choose the arrangement you can operate reliably. The best design is the one for which you control file access, can schedule complete restarts, and can inspect logs at every layer.
Costs and managed hosting
The installation workflow itself is a file upload and restart; the official guide directs administrators to the ViaVersion project on Hangar for the release JAR. Hosting, memory, backups, and downtime are separate operating costs determined by your provider and network size. No universal hosting price can be inferred from the installation instructions.

The official installation page names Shockbyte as a sponsor offering a one-click ViaVersion server template. A managed template can save upload and placement steps, but confirm the template’s current availability, supported server software, Java runtime, and restart behavior with the host. Even with one-click installation, verify the startup log and run /viaversion; automation does not replace compatibility testing.
Operational pitfalls to avoid
- Uploading while the process is running: A server may overwrite or cache plugin files. Stop first, replace the JAR, and start cleanly.
- Keeping duplicate JARs: Two ViaVersion copies can produce confusing load errors. Keep one intended release in the active plugin directory.
- Installing an addon without its base plugin: ViaBackwards and ViaRewind extend ViaVersion; they are not substitutes for it.
- Assuming connection equals feature parity: Protocol translation permits joining, but it cannot add newer blocks, mechanics, or world generation.
- Changing several variables at once: When troubleshooting, test the base plugin first, then add the required compatibility component, and only afterward reintroduce unrelated plugins.
- Ignoring the actual Java executable: A desktop may use Java 17 while the host starts the server with an older runtime. Check the process startup information and its error output.
- Forgetting the target backend: On a proxy, players may be routed to a different server than the one you edited. Check that backend’s files and log.
Troubleshoot common installation failures
The server says the plugin is missing
- Confirm the server was fully stopped before the upload and fully restarted afterward.
- Check that the file is directly inside the active instance’s
pluginsdirectory. - Make sure the download is a ViaVersion JAR, not a ZIP archive or a browser error page saved with a JAR extension.
- Look for the plugin name in the startup log. If no attempt to load it appears, you may be editing the wrong server directory.
Java or dependency errors appear during startup
Check the Java runtime used by the server process, not only the Java version installed on your desktop. Current documented builds require Java 17 or newer unless you intentionally use a special compatible build. If the log reports an older runtime, change the host’s startup profile or install a supported Java runtime, then restart and inspect the log again.
Players receive an “Outdated Server” kick
On BungeeCord networks, update BungeeCord when applicable, then inspect both proxy and backend logs. Verify that ViaVersion is installed on the server the player actually reaches; installing it on a different backend does not fix the target server. Confirm the client version is within the current compatibility range, and add ViaBackwards or ViaRewind only when the required older range calls for it.

Problems started after using /reload
ViaVersion’s installation guidance warns that plugin-manager reloads can leave it in an unusable state. Stop the server and perform a complete restart. If the issue persists, remove duplicate or stale JARs, check the startup exception, and test again before changing unrelated settings.
1.8 clients or gameplay behave incorrectly
Review compatibility with other plugins before treating the issue as a ViaVersion download problem. The documentation specifically calls out possible interactions with ProtocolSupport, BKCommonLib, Orebfuscator, SkinRestorer, Citizens2, and packet-handling behavior on 1.8 servers. Test with only the necessary compatibility components, then add other plugins back in a controlled order.
A proxy cannot identify a backend protocol
Run /viaversion probe to force a backend scan, verify that the backend is online and reachable, and check that the proxy and backend are using compatible, current builds. Read the logs on both sides; a successful proxy startup does not establish that every backend responded correctly.

Maintain the installation safely
- Back up first: Keep a copy of the current ViaVersion JAR and the server’s plugin configuration before replacing files.
- Update deliberately: Read the release information for the ViaVersion build and any addon before updating a production network.
- Replace while stopped: Stop the relevant proxy or backend, replace the JAR, and start it again. Do not rely on hot reload.
- Check every layer: On a proxy network, inspect the startup output for the proxy and each changed backend.
- Test representative clients: Connect with the newest, oldest, and any intermediate versions your community uses. Test login, movement, inventory, combat, and important minigame features.
- Keep diagnostics: When reporting a failure, record the server platform, Java version, ViaVersion/addon versions, startup errors, and output from
/viaversion dump.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I put the ViaVersion JAR?
Put the downloaded ViaVersion JAR directly in the active server’s plugins folder, such as your-server/plugins/ViaVersion.jar. Do not place it in a world folder, beside the server JAR, or in a client mods directory.
Do I need ViaBackwards?
Only if you need older clients than base ViaVersion supports. ViaBackwards provides documented support for 1.9–1.21 client ranges on supported servers; ViaRewind extends coverage to 1.8 and 1.7.
Should ViaVersion go on Velocity or the backend?
