Install Undead Legacy (UL) as a complete server-side overhaul, not as a Mods folder alone. First choose a UL branch and match the dedicated server and every client to its exact 7 Days to Die build. Then stop the server, extract the entire UL archive beside the server executable, disable Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) on both sides, launch through the supplied loader, and create a new world. At the time of the compatibility information used here, experimental UL 2.7.x was paired with 7 Days to Die V2.6 b14, while stable UL 2.6.17 was paired with Alpha 20.7 b1; these pairings are version-sensitive and must be checked against the current UL download information before installation.
What you need before installing
Undead Legacy changes the game’s item, progression, crafting, user-interface and world systems. The server and every connecting player therefore need the same UL line and compatible game build. A client on vanilla files, a different UL branch or a different game build may be refused or may load with broken UI and missing assets.

- Administrative access to the server’s root directory and configuration files.
- The complete UL server archive for the selected branch, including all archive parts when the download is split.
- A matching UL client installation for every player.
- Permission to disable EAC for the server and all clients.
- A backup of saves and configuration before changing branches or creating the overhaul world.
For capacity planning, a 2026 dedicated-server guide lists about 6 GB of RAM for a small vanilla server and 10–16 GB for an overhaul or a larger group. UL generally belongs in the latter planning range, but actual use depends on player count, world settings, map generation and other installed mods.
Choose a compatible UL and game version
Do not begin by downloading whichever game branch Steam currently selects. Select the UL line first, then pin the server and all clients to the corresponding 7 Days to Die branch and build.

The build numbers above are not permanent. Check the current UL compatibility information and download page immediately before deployment. On Steam, use the game’s Properties and Betas controls to select the required branch rather than allowing an automatic update to move the server or clients to an incompatible build. Repeat the same selection on every player’s PC.
Keep one written record of the chosen pair, for example “UL 2.6.17 / Alpha 20.7 b1.” That record prevents a later update from silently mixing stable and experimental files.

Back up the server and stop it
- Stop the dedicated-server service or process. Never overwrite loader files while the server is running.
- Copy the complete save directory, server configuration and any custom scripts to a separate location.
- If you are changing from stable to experimental, or the reverse, keep the old installation or a restorable backup. A branch transition can leave files and saves that are unsuitable for the other line.
- Tell players that the overhaul will use a new world. A vanilla save is not assumed to load safely under UL.
Backups are especially important because a total overhaul can alter block, item and progression identifiers. If the new server fails, restoring the old save and loader files is safer than trying to repair a partially converted world.
Install the dedicated server files
Find the server root
The server root is the directory containing the dedicated-server executable and the normal 7 Days to Die server files. Extract UL directly into that directory. The finished layout must put BepInEx, Mods and the loader files at the same level as the executable.
A common failed layout is server-root/UndeadLegacy/BepInEx. Move the contents of the inner folder up one level so the loader can find them. Do not upload only Mods; UL’s runtime and doorstop files are required before any mod assembly can load.

Use the supplied Windows loader files and the normal Windows server executable after the archive has been extracted. A vanilla start script that does not load the supplied runtime can start an apparently healthy but unmodded server.

Make the supplied shell script executable if your deployment method requires it, and start UL with run_bepinex_server.sh. Do not substitute the plain vanilla start script. On Linux installations where Mono cannot resolve the dynamic-loader library, add this mapping to the relevant Mono configuration:

Disable EAC on the server and clients
UL requires EAC to be disabled. In the server configuration XML, set:
<property name="EACEnabled" value="false"/>Save the file before starting the server. Every player must also launch the game with EAC disabled using the launcher option provided by that game build. A server with EAC disabled cannot be made compatible with a client that still starts the protected, vanilla mode; all participants must use the same disabled-EAC state.
Changing only the server XML is a frequent cause of connection failures. Ask each player to close the game, select the non-EAC launch choice, and confirm that the same UL client files are installed before testing a connection.

Start the modded server
- Confirm that the selected game branch and UL build are recorded and match the files installed on clients.
- Check that the loader files are beside the server executable, not in a nested folder.
- Confirm
EACEnabledis set tofalse. - On Windows, start through the supplied UL-compatible loader files. On Linux, run
run_bepinex_server.sh. - Watch the startup log. A successful launch should show the loader initializing before the game server and should not immediately fall back to a vanilla-only startup.
- Stop and correct the installation if the server creates a vanilla interface, ignores UL settings or reports missing assemblies; do not let players create a permanent world until the loader is confirmed.
Install UL on every player’s PC
Each client needs the same UL line and exact compatible game build as the server. Install the client package according to the UL release instructions, select the same Steam branch used by the server, and launch with EAC disabled. Do not assume that a server-side installation distributes client files automatically.
Before inviting players, compare these four values on the server and each PC:
- 7 Days to Die branch and build.
- UL line and build.
- EAC enabled or disabled.
- Presence of the required UL files and loader configuration.
Only after those values match should you investigate ordinary firewall, NAT or port-forwarding problems.
Create a new UL world
Back up the old save, then create a fresh world for the overhaul. Do not test UL by opening a valuable vanilla save first. If you need to preserve an existing world, keep it untouched and use a separate save directory for the UL trial. This gives you a clean rollback path if the overhaul changes world data or fails during generation.
Network ports and server capacity
The 2026 dedicated-server reference lists these default game ports, but verify the defaults for the exact game build you deploy:

Dashboard or telnet ports are optional and depend on your configuration. Open only the ports you actually use in the host firewall and router. Port forwarding cannot repair a version mismatch, an EAC mismatch or a server that started without BepInEx.

Managed hosting and containerized installation
Control-panel workflow
A managed 7 Days to Die host can reduce file-transfer and startup-script work. The documented pattern is:
- Stop the service from the control panel.
- Open the provider’s non-Workshop-mod installation area and select Undead Legacy.
- Choose the required UL line and game branch, if the panel exposes both.
- Set EAC to disabled for the server.
- Start the service and inspect the console for loader initialization.
- Require every player to install the same client build and disable EAC before joining.
Panel labels and available versions change, so confirm the provider’s current branch support and backup policy before paying. One-click installation does not remove the need to match client builds or protect saves.
Docker automation
Docker-7DaysToDie exposes environment variables for automated UL selection:

UNDEAD_LEGACY_VERSION=EXPUse UNDEAD_LEGACY_VERSION=STABLE for the stable line. The image also provides update controls. Changing from EXP to STABLE, or the reverse, should be treated as a migration: stop the container, back up the persistent server and save/configuration mounts, then change the variable and recreate or update the container according to its documentation.
Persistent mounts are essential. A container that keeps the executable but discards its save and configuration directories on recreation can make a successful mod installation look like lost progress. Didstopia’s container documentation likewise describes persistent mounts for server files and save/configuration data; apply the same principle regardless of image.

The server starts as vanilla
- Check that the complete archive was extracted into the server root.
- Confirm
BepInEx,Modsand the loader files are beside the executable. - On Linux, replace the vanilla start command with
run_bepinex_server.sh. - On Windows, verify that the supplied
winhttp.dllanddoorstop_config.iniare present. - Review the startup log for loader errors before changing gameplay settings.
“Subquake_Items.ulm” is missing, movement is frozen, or the UI is vanilla
These symptoms are associated with an incomplete experimental archive. Some experimental downloads are split into more than one part. Download every required part and copy the contents of each part into the server root, merging folders rather than placing one archive inside another. Repeat the complete client installation if the same asset is missing on player machines.

Players cannot connect
- Compare the exact 7 Days to Die branch and build.
- Compare the exact UL line and build.
- Confirm EAC is disabled in the server XML and in every client launch.
- Confirm the server actually started through the UL loader.
- Only then check firewall rules, router forwarding and the documented game ports.
Changing network settings first often obscures a simple branch or loader mismatch.
Files are one directory too deep
If the server root contains one folder that then contains BepInEx, Mods and winhttp.dll or run_bepinex_server.sh, move those contents up one level. The loader expects the files at the root used by the executable.
Switching between stable and experimental broke the server
Stop the server, restore the pre-switch backup, and decide which branch you actually want to run. Do not overlay one branch indefinitely on top of another. Reinstall the corresponding complete archive, select the matching Steam branch and use a separate fresh world unless the UL release explicitly confirms save compatibility.
Manual installation versus automation

Choose manual installation when you need precise control over an experimental build or custom loader configuration. Choose a panel when minimizing administration matters more than controlling update timing. Choose Docker when you already operate containers and can verify persistent storage and rollback procedures.
Final pre-launch checklist
- The UL line and exact game build are written down and match on server and clients.
- The complete archive, including every experimental part, is extracted directly into the server root.
- Windows has
BepInEx,Mods,doorstop_config.iniandwinhttp.dll. - Linux has
BepInEx,Mods,doorstop_libs,doorstop_config.iniandrun_bepinex_server.sh. EACEnabledisfalse, and every player launches with EAC disabled.- The Linux wrapper or Windows loader is used instead of a plain vanilla startup.
- Saves and configuration are backed up.
- A fresh UL world is created.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install Undead Legacy by uploading only the Mods folder?
No. UL also needs BepInEx and loader/runtime files. Extract the complete archive into the server root beside the dedicated-server executable.
Do I need a new world for Undead Legacy?
Use a fresh world for the overhaul and keep a backup of any vanilla save. A vanilla save is not guaranteed to load safely under UL.
Why does my experimental installation say Subquake_Items.ulm is missing?
The experimental archive may be split into multiple parts. Download every required part and merge all contents into the server root and the corresponding client installation.
Which ports should I forward?
The 2026 dedicated-server reference lists 26900 TCP/UDP and 26901–26902 UDP as defaults. Verify the defaults for your exact game build before changing firewall or router rules.
