Install The Wasteland by matching its release to your installed 7 Days to Die build, extracting each mod folder directly into the game’s Mods directory, installing that release’s dependencies, and launching with Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) disabled. Multiplayer also requires the same compatible files on the server and every client.
The current main Wasteland file shown on its Nexus listing is 3.1 GB and was uploaded on 28 May 2026, but the page also retains files for earlier game generations. Treat compatibility—not upload date—as the deciding factor.

Before you download: confirm the two versions
7 Days to Die mods are tied to the game build for which they were made. A newer Wasteland upload is not automatically correct for your installation: the maintained listing contains historical releases, and their dependency sets differ. First note the game build Steam is actually running, then select the Wasteland file whose changelog names that build.
Check your 7 Days to Die build
- Open Steam and look at the game’s current update/build information on its library page or in the game’s title screen.
- If Steam has a branch or beta selected, record that branch as well as the number. Switching branches can change the files the mod expects.
- Do not update or downgrade the game solely to fit a download until you have checked the Wasteland release notes and considered your existing saves.
Use the Wasteland file’s changelog as the compatibility test
On the Wasteland Nexus listing, open the individual file and read its changelog or requirements. Match the named 7 Days to Die generation, dependency versions, and any optional components to your installation. The 2.6 line, for example, lists SCore, NPCmod, FullautoLauncher, RandomMainmenuBackground, and Quartz. That list is not a universal requirement for every historical release; copy the requirements of the exact file you selected.

Download the correct release
Use the maintained Wasteland listing as the distribution point. Select the main file or historical file that matches your game build rather than simply clicking the newest upload. Keep the downloaded archive until you have launched successfully; it provides a clean source if you need to reinstall.
When the download control seems to disappear
A Fun Pimps support discussion notes that some Nexus prompts can open an unzipped location or an intermediate page without an obvious download action. Return to the actual file entry and its download control instead of treating the displayed folder as the completed download. Confirm that your browser saved an archive and that its size is plausible before extracting it.
Prepare a safe workspace
- Close 7 Days to Die before changing its files.
- Extract the archive to a temporary folder first, not directly into the game directory. This makes it easier to inspect the top-level folders and identify included dependencies.
- Keep a copy of your saves outside the game directory before changing an overhaul or moving between game branches.
Find the game’s Mods folder through Steam
The standard destination is the game’s own Mods directory. The official Fun Pimps installation guidance uses 7_Days_To_DieMods; Steam’s Browse Local Files command is the safest way to reach the installation you are actually running.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click 7 Days to Die.
- Choose Manage, then Browse Local Files.
- In the window that opens, look for a folder named
Mods. - If no
Modsfolder exists, create one with that exact capitalization. The official guidance explicitly says to create it when it is absent.
Do not place the files in Steam’s workshop cache, your user profile’s save directory, or a separate copy of the game. Browse Local Files avoids guessing which library drive contains the active installation.
Extract Wasteland with the correct folder nesting
Each mod folder must sit directly inside the game’s Mods folder. A typical final layout looks like this:
Rank #2
- Explore – Huge, rich environments, with unique biomes and worlds up to 100 square kilometres in size.
- Craft – Handcraft and repair weapons, clothes, armour, tools, vehicles, with hundreds of recipes and schematics.
- Build – Design your fort with traps, electricity, auto turrets, and gadgets to survive in a fully destructible and mouldable world.
- Cooperate or Compete – Work together to build settlements or against each other in a wasteland where zombies and outlaws rule the land.
- Farm or Hunt – Plant gardens for sustainable resources or head out to the wilderness and hunt over a dozen unique animals.

- Open the archive in an extractor that preserves folders.
- Inspect the first level. If it contains one or more actual mod folders, copy those folders into the game’s
Modsdirectory. - Open every copied folder and confirm that
ModInfo.xmlis inside that folder, not one level deeper. - Remove an accidental wrapper layer. The common failure is
ModsThe_WastelandThe_WastelandModInfo.xml; the usable form isModsThe_WastelandModInfo.xml. - If the archive contains several separately named dependency folders, copy each one directly into
Mods. Do not merge their contents into a single Wasteland folder unless the release instructions explicitly require it.
ModInfo.xml is a practical installation check. A folder without it is usually not a loadable mod folder, and a file buried under an extra directory tells you the archive was nested incorrectly.
Install the dependencies for your exact release
Wasteland’s requirements change between releases. Read the selected file’s requirements and changelog and install every item marked required. For the 2.6 release line, the listing names:

- NPCmod
- FullautoLauncher
- RandomMainmenuBackground

Older files list different versions or combinations. Some downloads include dependencies, while others expect separate downloads. Inspect the extracted archive and compare it with the release’s requirements so you do not install duplicate, outdated, or incompatible copies. When two archives contain a folder with the same name, keep the version required by the Wasteland file you selected and remove obsolete duplicates rather than leaving ambiguous copies in Mods.
Verify each dependency before launching
- There is one clearly named folder for each required dependency.
- Each required folder contains its own
ModInfo.xmlat the folder’s top level. - The dependency versions correspond to the Wasteland release notes, not merely to the newest files currently visible on a download page.
- Optional visual or menu mods are installed only when the selected release identifies them as compatible; optional does not mean required for the core overhaul.
Disable Easy Anti-Cheat before starting
The Wasteland listing displays the warning “!!!EAC MUST BE OFF!!!” Easy Anti-Cheat must be disabled for the modded launch. Use the game’s normal Steam launch choice that starts without EAC when it is offered, and do not select an EAC-protected server for a Wasteland session.
If the game starts but the Wasteland content is absent, verify the launch choice first. A correctly placed mod can appear to be ignored when the protected EAC mode is used. For an unmodded session, you can return to the standard protected launch; keep separate expectations for protected vanilla play and the EAC-off modded session.

Set up multiplayer on both sides
The listing states “!!!HAS TO BE INSTALLED ON BOTH SERVERS AND CLIENTS!!!” A client-only installation is not sufficient. Install the same compatible Wasteland release and the same required dependency set on the dedicated server and on every connecting client.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsServer checklist
- Stop the server before copying files.
- Place the Wasteland and dependency folders in the server’s game
Modsdirectory, using the same direct-child layout as the client. - Confirm the server build matches the client build and the Wasteland changelog target.
- Start the server with EAC disabled where the server software exposes that setting.
- Review the server log for missing assemblies, missing dependencies, or malformed mod metadata before inviting players.
If you would rather not run the dedicated server on your own PC, you can rent a 7 Days to Die server from Godlike.Host. It gives you SFTP/FTP access, so you can upload the Wasteland and dependency folders into the server’s Mods directory and stop or restart the server from its panel.
Client checklist
- Install the identical release and dependency versions in the client’s
Modsdirectory. - Use the EAC-off launch.
- Join only after the server has loaded successfully.
- If joining fails, compare folder names and file versions directly with the server rather than replacing files at random.
Even a small difference—such as an older SCore folder, a missing NPCmod folder, or a different Wasteland patch—can prevent a client from joining or cause missing content.
Run a controlled first launch
Do not immediately load a long-running world after changing an overhaul. Use a short test so you can separate an installation problem from a damaged or incompatible save.
- Close the game and recheck the final path:
7 Days To DieMods<mod folder>ModInfo.xml. - Confirm EAC is off and that the selected Wasteland release matches the installed game build.
- Launch the game and wait for the main menu to finish loading.
- Check for Wasteland-specific menu elements, content, or startup messages expected by that release.
- Create a temporary test world or join a test server before opening your primary save.
- Enter the world long enough to verify that the overhaul’s systems and required content are present.
- Exit normally, inspect any error log, and only then return to your backed-up primary save.
Keep the original save backup until you have confirmed that the game version, Wasteland release, and dependency set are stable together.

Troubleshoot a Wasteland installation that does not work
The mod is not detected at all
- Use Steam’s Manage → Browse Local Files path again and make sure you edited the active installation.
- Check for an extra wrapper directory. Move the folder containing
ModInfo.xmldirectly underMods. - Confirm the file is named exactly
ModInfo.xmland is not hidden inside another archive or renamed with an additional extension. - Remove duplicate nested copies so the game does not encounter several versions of the same mod.
The game opens, but Wasteland content is missing
- Confirm you launched with EAC disabled; the Wasteland listing requires this.
- Read the selected release’s requirements again and install every required dependency.
- Check that dependencies are separate direct-child folders under
Mods, each with its own metadata. - Make sure the release targets your current game build. A clean folder layout cannot make an incompatible release load correctly.
A multiplayer client cannot join
- Compare the server and client Wasteland file versions, not just their folder names.
- Compare every required dependency, including the versions of SCore, NPCmod, FullautoLauncher, RandomMainmenuBackground, or Quartz when those are listed for your release.
- Verify EAC is disabled on the server and client.
- Check that neither side has an extra optional mod that changes the required set for the session.
Errors appear after a 7 Days to Die update
Stop launching the affected save and re-check compatibility. The installation guidance warns that a mod made for one game version may not work on another, and changing versions carelessly can put saves at risk. Either restore the game build expected by the Wasteland release, or move to a Wasteland release that explicitly targets the new build. Back up saves before either change.
The download page produces an unzipped location instead of a file
Return to the actual Wasteland file entry and select its download control. The support discussion about confusing Nexus prompts indicates that an intermediate or unzipped location is not proof that the archive was downloaded. Verify the browser’s download history and extract only the completed archive.
Updating, switching releases, and protecting saves
Replacing an overhaul is more disruptive than installing a small cosmetic mod. Before switching Wasteland versions, changing game branches, or accepting a major game update:
- Exit the game and server.
- Copy your save folder to a location outside the 7 Days to Die directory.
- Record the current game build, Wasteland release, and dependency versions.
- Remove or move the old Wasteland and dependency folders so stale files cannot mix with the new release.
- Install the new release and its exact requirements using the folder checks above.
- Test a new temporary world first.
- Restore your main save only after the test succeeds and you have confirmed that the new release supports that save’s game generation.
If the new version fails, restore the backed-up mod folders and game branch rather than repeatedly loading the original save while troubleshooting. A backup cannot repair every incompatibility, but it gives you a defined rollback point.
Quick pre-launch checklist
- Your 7 Days to Die build matches the Wasteland file’s stated target.
- You selected the release by compatibility, not simply by its upload date.
- The archive was downloaded from the maintained listing and fully extracted.
- The game directory was opened with Steam’s Browse Local Files command.
- A
Modsfolder exists at the game’s top level. - Every Wasteland and dependency folder is directly inside
Mods. ModInfo.xmlis present at the top level of each mod folder.- All dependencies named by the selected release are installed, with no stale duplicates.
- EAC is disabled for the modded launch.
- Server and clients have identical compatible files for multiplayer.
- Your existing saves are backed up before an overhaul or game-version change.
What a successful installation looks like
A successful setup is not defined by the newest filename or by seeing folders in Windows Explorer. It is a matching set: the Wasteland release targets your exact game build, its required dependencies are present, each mod folder exposes ModInfo.xml at the expected level, EAC is off, and—if you play online—the server and every client use the same set. Testing a new world before risking a primary save confirms the installation without exposing an established playthrough to an unverified version combination.
