PixelBoard is an unofficial, modified build of Google’s Gboard that the PixelBoard maintainer says can bring Rambler voice typing to compatible non-Pixel Android phones without root. The practical route is to check your phone against PixelBoard’s compatibility matrix, install the signed release APK, enable PixelBoard as a keyboard, and choose Rambler under its Voice typing settings. This is a community workaround—not Google-supported software—and it requires trusting a modified keyboard APK.

What you are installing

Google’s official Rambler voice input is documented for Pixel 11 series devices. PixelBoard is a community-maintained modified Gboard build by Akshay Kadam that attempts to make core Rambler voice typing available on additional Android phones. It is independent of Google, is supplied without a warranty, and does not turn the feature into an officially supported Google capability.

PixelBoard can coexist with the stock Gboard according to its repository, and the maintainer says root is not required. The word “port” is important: compatibility depends on the Android version, processor architecture, Gboard base version, APK build, and any future server-side or Gboard changes. “Any Android phone” descriptions should not be read as a guarantee that every device or every Rambler feature will work.

Check compatibility before downloading anything

Use the live PixelBoard repository and release notes immediately before installation. APK builds and supported base versions can change. The maintainer’s current matrix lists the following requirements and known-compatible combinations:

Item Maintainer’s current information What it means
Android version Android 10 (API 29) through Android 16 Preview Your phone must fall within the listed range; a manufacturer skin or preview build can still introduce its own incompatibility.
CPU architecture arm64-v8a Most recent phones use this 64-bit ARM architecture, but verify rather than assume.
Recommended Gboard base 18.4.1.985164140-release-arm64-v8a This is the maintainer’s recommended release base for the current project instructions.
Other listed bases 18.4.1.985164140-beta-arm64-v8a; 18.3.1.977415014-release-arm64-v8a These are listed as compatible alternatives, not a promise that every regional or OEM build will behave identically.
Root access Not required The direct APK route is intended to work on a normal, non-rooted phone.
Stock Gboard Can coexist with PixelBoard, according to the repository You can retain the original keyboard and switch back if the port does not suit you.

The repository showed release v18.4.1 and an APK of about 127 MB when checked for this guide. Treat both figures as a snapshot, not a permanent requirement. A later release may have a different version number or file size.

Quick pre-install checklist

  • Confirm Android 10/API 29 or newer, within the project’s currently listed range.
  • Confirm the phone uses arm64-v8a.
  • Back up important text, settings, and any keyboard dictionaries you rely on.
  • Make sure you can return to your existing keyboard from Android Settings.
  • Download only from the PixelBoard maintainer’s project release page, not from a mirror or an unknown APK site.
  • Have a reliable internet connection for downloading the APK and for Rambler’s full feature set.

Choose an installation route

Route Best for What you do Main trade-off
Direct release APK Most people Download the signed PixelBoard APK, approve installation from the source when Android asks, and install it. Sideloading requires you to trust a modified keyboard package.
ADB Developers or users already working from a computer Enable USB debugging, connect the phone, and run the maintainer’s install command. Requires a computer, platform-tools, a working USB connection, and correct device authorization.
Morphe Manager patch Users who specifically need to patch a stock Gboard base Use the current PixelBoard patch bundle and the live README’s supported workflow. More moving parts and more version sensitivity than installing the release APK.

For a first attempt, use the direct APK route. The repository’s current instructions are the authority for Morphe Manager. A TechPP guide updated September 20, 2026 describes an earlier workflow involving Jason Wu’s Gboard patch source, a supported APK, and Advanced Voice Typing; do not combine those older labels or versions with the current README as though they were one tested procedure.

Install PixelBoard from the signed release APK

  1. Open the maintainer’s PixelBoard release page. Select the stable release that matches the current compatibility information. Check the filename, architecture, version, and release notes before downloading.
  2. Download the APK on the Android phone. Use the browser’s download notification or a file manager to locate it after the download finishes.
  3. Open the APK. Android may display a warning that the browser or file manager is not allowed to install unknown apps.
  4. Grant the one-time install permission. Follow the prompt to allow installation from that specific source, then return to the APK installer. The exact path varies by Android version and manufacturer; it may appear under an “Install unknown apps” setting for the browser or file manager you used.
  5. Review and install. Confirm the package shown is PixelBoard and complete the installation. If Android reports a conflicting package, an invalid APK, or a signature problem, stop rather than forcing the install; obtain the release again from the maintainer’s page and recheck compatibility.
  6. Revoke the source permission afterward if you do not need it. In the same “Install unknown apps” settings page, turn the permission off for the browser or file manager. This does not remove PixelBoard.

The signed release is the simplest route documented by the maintainer. “Signed” does not mean Google-certified or independently security-audited; it identifies the package signing used by that project.

Install with ADB instead

ADB is useful when downloading or opening an APK on the phone is inconvenient. It does not remove the need to trust the package.

  1. Install the Android SDK Platform-Tools on your computer.
  2. On the phone, open the Developer options and enable USB debugging. Android may require you to unlock Developer options first by tapping the build number several times in About phone.
  3. Connect the phone with a USB cable, unlock it, and accept the computer-authorisation prompt.
  4. Place the PixelBoard APK in the output directory used by the project or adjust the path to the file you downloaded.
  5. From a terminal in that directory, run adb install -r output/PixelBoard.apk.
  6. Wait for an ADB success message, then disconnect or disable USB debugging when you are finished if you do not routinely use it.

The -r option requests replacement while preserving application data when Android permits it. If ADB reports that no device is found, confirm the cable, USB mode, authorization prompt, platform-tools installation, and that USB debugging is still enabled. If it reports an architecture or signature mismatch, use a compatible release instead of retrying the same file.

Enable PixelBoard and select it as the active keyboard

Installing the APK does not automatically make it your keyboard. Android treats keyboard enablement and keyboard selection as separate steps.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Languages & input > On-screen keyboard. Some manufacturers label the destination Manage keyboards, Keyboard list and default, or place it under General management.
  3. Enable PixelBoard in the keyboard list and acknowledge Android’s warning about the information an input method can handle.
  4. Return to the on-screen keyboard page and set PixelBoard as the default, or open any text field and use the keyboard selector. On some phones, tapping the keyboard icon in the navigation area or holding the spacebar opens the switcher.
  5. If Android asks for microphone access when you first use voice input, choose the permission option that matches your privacy preference. Rambler cannot capture speech without microphone access.

Turn on Rambler in PixelBoard

  1. Open PixelBoard’s settings from the app drawer or from the keyboard’s gear icon.
  2. Open Voice typing.
  3. Set Dictation type to Rambler.
  4. Use the on-screen labels shown by your installed build. The maintainer says Advanced Voice Typing is enabled by default in the current instructions and that changing the setting should take effect without a restart.
  5. Open a text field in a messaging, notes, browser, or other app, confirm that PixelBoard is displayed, and tap its microphone button.
  6. Speak normally. Review the result before sending or saving it, because Google documents that Rambler can make mistakes.

If the introductory prompt does not appear, the settings path above is the important part: open Voice typing and choose Rambler manually. Menu names can differ between Android releases and manufacturer interfaces, so match the installed build’s labels rather than following a different phone’s screenshots.

What Rambler can do—and what it cannot promise on a port

Google describes Rambler as voice input that can clean up spoken thoughts, remove filler, apply punctuation and capitalization, and accept conversational corrections or rewrites. Its documented language support includes Arabic, English, French, German, Hindi and other supported Indian languages, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. Google also says users can switch languages mid-sentence where the supported configuration allows it.

PixelBoard’s README claims that core Rambler natural voice typing and some writing tools work on supported Android devices. It separately says newer Writing Tools V2 and on-device inference options are gated to eligible Pixel hardware. Therefore, a successful installation may provide dictation without reproducing every feature available on a Pixel 11 series phone.

Online and offline behavior

Google says basic cleanup, punctuation, and capitalization can continue with offline processing, while advanced stylistic rewrites and complex conversational voice editing resume when an internet connection returns. The full feature set requires an active internet connection. Do not interpret “offline support” as full Rambler functionality without a network.

Accuracy and editing discipline

Voice recognition is affected by accent, background noise, microphone quality, language selection, speech rate, and the application receiving the text. There is no published PixelBoard benchmark for transcription accuracy, installation success, adoption, or reliability. Treat the port as a convenience tool and proofread names, numbers, addresses, commands, and sensitive text before using the output.

Privacy and security considerations

Google’s official Rambler documentation states: “When you use Rambler, your text, audio input, and your corrections to voice output will be temporarily processed by Google.” The same documentation says that material is not saved, stored, or shared and is deleted after the text is delivered. Those statements describe Google’s official Rambler service; they are not an independent security audit of PixelBoard or a guarantee about a modified APK.

A keyboard is a high-trust application because it can receive text typed into it. PixelBoard’s README says the project is independent and unaffiliated with Google, is provided as-is without warranty, and places sideloading risk on the user. Android Central’s October 12, 2026 coverage likewise warns that modified APKs introduce security and privacy risk and that a future Gboard or server-side change could stop the workaround.

  • Obtain the APK only from the maintainer’s release page.
  • Check the release version and compatibility notes before every update.
  • Do not install a repackaged copy from an unknown mirror.
  • Use Android’s permission controls to review microphone access and disable it when you do not need voice typing.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Symptom Likely cause Action
PixelBoard is not listed after installation The package did not install completely, or Android has not refreshed the input-method list. Restart the phone once, then check Settings > System > Languages & input > On-screen keyboard or Manage keyboards. If it is still absent, uninstall and reinstall the matching release.
Android blocks the APK The browser or file manager lacks permission to install unknown apps. Open that source’s Install unknown apps setting, allow the installation temporarily, and reopen the downloaded file.
Installation says the app is incompatible Android version, arm64-v8a architecture, package signature, or Gboard base does not match the project’s matrix. Check the live compatibility table and use a listed build. Do not force-install an architecture-mismatched package.
The keyboard appears, but Rambler is missing PixelBoard is installed but its Voice typing setting still uses another dictation mode, or the build does not expose the feature on that device. Open PixelBoard settings > Voice typing and set Dictation type to Rambler. If the option is absent, verify the release and device against the current README.
The microphone button does nothing Microphone permission is denied, the phone is offline, or another app is using the microphone. Review PixelBoard’s microphone permission, close competing recording apps, test a network connection, and try again in a simple text field.
Basic dictation works but rewrites do not Advanced stylistic editing and complex conversational commands need connectivity; some newer tools are Pixel-hardware-gated. Reconnect to the internet and check whether the requested tool is one of the Pixel-only features described by the project.
ADB reports no device USB debugging is disabled, the phone is locked, authorization was declined, or the cable/driver is faulty. Unlock the phone, reconnect, accept the authorization dialog, verify USB debugging, and run the command again from a current Platform-Tools installation.
The port breaks after an update A Gboard update, Android update, or server-side change may have invalidated the workaround. Switch to the stock keyboard, read the PixelBoard release notes, and install only a newly listed compatible build. There is no guarantee that every breakage can be repaired.

PixelBoard versus a normal app-store keyboard

If your goal is specifically Rambler, PixelBoard is the route described here. If your priority is avoiding sideloading, choose an ordinary keyboard distributed through your device’s app store and evaluate its own voice and writing features instead. 9to5Google has identified Microsoft SwiftKey as an app-store alternative, but the available information does not establish feature parity with Rambler, current pricing, or suitability for every phone.

Decision factor PixelBoard Ordinary app-store keyboard
Installation channel Modified APK from a project release; requires trust in the maintainer and sideloading process. Distributed through the device’s app store, with that store’s review and update model.
Primary reason to choose it You specifically want Rambler voice input on a non-Pixel phone. You prefer a conventional installation path or want a different keyboard’s own dictation and writing tools.
Compatibility Android 10 through Android 16 Preview and arm64-v8a are listed by the maintainer, subject to build-specific limits. Depends on the individual app’s store listing and device support.
Network behavior Google says Rambler’s advanced rewrites and complex conversational editing need an internet connection; basic cleanup may work offline. Varies by keyboard and feature; do not assume another app has Rambler’s language, offline, or privacy behavior.

Updating, switching back, or removing PixelBoard

Before updating

Read the new PixelBoard release notes, confirm the Android and architecture requirements again, and keep the stock keyboard available. A newer APK is not automatically better for every phone; a changed base version can introduce a new incompatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Switching back to Gboard or another keyboard

  1. Open any text field.
  2. Use Android’s keyboard selector, often shown as a keyboard icon in the navigation area, or go to the default keyboard setting.
  3. Select your previous keyboard.
  4. If necessary, return to Settings > System > Languages & input > On-screen keyboard and disable PixelBoard.

Uninstalling

  1. Switch to another keyboard first.
  2. Open Settings > Apps, select PixelBoard, and choose Uninstall.
  3. If you enabled installation from an unknown source, turn that source permission off afterward.
  4. Recheck your default keyboard and microphone permissions.

Uninstalling the port does not remove the stock Gboard package when the two are installed separately. If Android presents a package conflict during removal or update, keep the keyboard you need enabled and follow the system’s package-specific prompt rather than deleting both.

Bottom line

For a compatible arm64-v8a phone running a listed Android version, the direct signed PixelBoard APK is the shortest path to trying Rambler: install it, enable it, make it the active keyboard, and select Rambler under Voice typing. Expect an unsupported community workaround with device- and version-dependent features, online requirements for advanced editing, and the security implications of trusting a modified keyboard. Keep the stock keyboard available and proofread important dictation.
