Yes—you can still install the original Total War: SHOGUN 2 if it is already in your Steam account. SEGA’s 12 October 2026 FAQ says the standalone Steam listing stopped accepting new purchases at 17:00 BST (16:00 UTC, 09:00 PDT, 00:00 CST +1, or 01:00 JST +1) on 28 September 2026, but the game remains on Steam and continues to be playable. Open your Steam Library, search for Total War: SHOGUN 2, and install the original library entry.

If you never owned the original, buy Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition on Steam. That purchase includes the original game and its associated downloadable content except the Blood Pack. Purchases of Complete Edition through Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, or GOG should be treated as Complete Edition purchases only; SEGA does not say that they grant the original Steam app.

What the delisting changed—and what it did not

The change was to purchasing, not to existing licenses. As of 28 September 2026, SEGA no longer sells Total War: SHOGUN 2 as a standalone Steam product. The Steam store page can still be visible, but the original game and its downloadable content are now presented through Complete Edition.

SEGA’s FAQ is explicit: “Total War: SHOGUN 2 will still exist on Steam and will continue to be playable as normal.” It also says, “For existing owners, nothing will change.” That means a prior Steam owner should retain the original app, its normal launch path, and its existing mod arrangement. Delisting does not by itself remove the license from your account.

Total War: Shogun 2
  • Choose from 9 different clans and compete online and offline for the undisputed supremacy of Medieval Japan
  • Play through the Main Campaign in single player or invite a friend online to play competitively or cooperatively in Campaign Multiplayer mode
  • Developed according to Sun Tzu's principles in the Art of War, the Artificial Intelligence constantly analyzes its situation
  • Build and govern cities, recruit and train troops, conduct diplomacy and manage your agents
  • Improved land and naval battle gameplay, now with the ability to combine forces and attacks
  • Already owned the original on Steam: install it from your Library as before.
  • Never owned it: Steam Complete Edition is the new purchase route that includes the original game.
  • Bought Complete Edition elsewhere: you receive that storefront’s Complete Edition entitlement, not automatically the original Steam application.

Install the original game from an existing Steam license

Use these steps when Total War: SHOGUN 2 was previously purchased or activated on the Steam account you are using now.

  1. Sign in to the correct Steam account. Check the account that originally purchased or redeemed the game. A different account, Family Sharing change, or a purchase made through another storefront can make the entry appear to be missing.
  2. Open Steam Library. Select Library in the Steam client and use the search box for Total War: SHOGUN 2. Search by the game name rather than relying on a recently played list, because an older title may be filtered or hidden.
  3. Select the original library entry. The original game should remain associated with the account under SEGA’s “nothing will change” policy for existing owners. Do not assume that the absence of a Buy button means the license has been revoked.
  4. Choose Install. Follow Steam’s installation prompt, select the destination drive, and allow the client to complete the download and any queued updates.
  5. Launch from the same entry. When installation finishes, choose Play in the Library. Keeping the launch shortcut tied to this original entry helps you avoid confusing it with Complete Edition.
  6. Confirm that your old mod setup is still separate. The original game’s mods remain unchanged. Do not migrate them into Complete Edition unless a mod author specifically confirms compatibility.

If the Install button is missing

A missing Install button is usually an account or client-state problem, not proof that the delisting erased ownership. Work through these checks in order:

  • Sign out of Steam and sign back in to the account that made the original purchase.
  • Search the complete Library, including hidden games and any custom collections or filters.
  • Check Steam account purchase history and the original receipt or activation record.
  • Restart the Steam client so it refreshes the license list.
  • Confirm that you are looking for the original Total War: SHOGUN 2 entry, not only a Complete Edition page.
  • If the license is still absent, contact Steam account/library support and SEGA support with the account details and proof of ownership. Do not buy a second copy until support has checked the entitlement.

Buying the original after standalone sales ended

For a new buyer, the supported Steam route is Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition. SEGA says that Steam purchase includes the original Total War: SHOGUN 2 and its associated DLC, with one age-rating exception: the Blood Pack is excluded.

Complete Edition is therefore a bundle entitlement, not merely a renamed store page for a game you must buy separately. After buying it on Steam, look in your Library for the entries Steam provides and identify the original game before installing if you specifically want the legacy version and its mod ecosystem.

Why the Blood Pack is not included

The bundled DLC list excludes the Blood Pack because of age-rating requirements. Do not interpret that omission as a missing installation file or a problem with your purchase; it is a stated limitation of the Complete Edition bundle.

What existing owners received

SEGA says existing Steam owners retain the original and were granted missing legacy DLC at no additional cost. The Blood Pack remains the stated exception to the Complete Edition bundle. The exact DLC visible in your account can depend on what was already licensed, so check the game’s Steam properties or DLC list rather than assuming every item has the same status.

Which storefront gives you which version?

The store where you buy determines the application entitlement. The following reflects SEGA’s FAQ, not an assumption that similarly named products share licenses across storefronts.

Storefront What the purchase includes Original Steam app included? DLC and mod context
Steam Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition includes the original game and associated DLC. Yes, the Steam Complete Edition purchase includes the original Total War: SHOGUN 2. Blood Pack is excluded. The original game uses its existing legacy mod arrangement; Complete Edition uses integrated Mod.io support.
Epic Games Store Complete Edition only, according to SEGA’s FAQ. Do not assume it grants the original Steam app. Blood Pack and the exact app relationship should be checked on that store’s listing; a purchase there does not transfer into Steam automatically.
Microsoft Store Complete Edition only, according to SEGA’s FAQ. Do not assume it grants the original Steam app. The Microsoft Store license is separate from Steam’s Library and Workshop ecosystem.
GOG Complete Edition only, according to SEGA’s FAQ. Do not assume it grants the original Steam app. The GOG installation is separate from Steam’s app and legacy Workshop ownership.

If your priority is the original Steam application, Steam is the only storefront identified by SEGA as including it through Complete Edition. Buying a similarly titled Complete Edition on another store does not create a Steam license.

Original game versus Complete Edition: keep the installations distinct

The two versions should be treated as separate environments when you are managing mods or troubleshooting launches. The original Total War: SHOGUN 2 keeps its existing mod setup. Complete Edition introduces integrated Mod.io support, and SEGA says original-game mods are not compatible with Complete Edition’s Mod.io setup.

Area Original Total War: SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition
Ownership path Existing Steam license remains installable and playable. New Steam purchase includes the original game and associated DLC except Blood Pack.
Mod system Existing legacy/Steam Workshop arrangement remains unchanged. Integrated Mod.io support.
Compatibility Original mods continue to target the original game. Original-game mods are not compatible with the Complete Edition Mod.io setup.
File-management rule Keep its existing mod files with this installation. Use Complete Edition-compatible mods only; do not copy legacy files without confirmation.

How to avoid cross-installation mod problems

  • Install the original and Complete Edition into clearly identifiable library folders if you have enough disk space.
  • Do not copy Workshop or legacy mod files from the original installation into Complete Edition.
  • Do not assume that a mod with the same name has the same package, loader, or version requirements in both environments.
  • When switching versions, launch from the intended Steam Library entry and verify the enabled mod list before starting a campaign.
  • If a mod author publishes a Complete Edition version through Mod.io, use that version rather than adapting the original files yourself.

Using the 75% loyalty discount

SEGA announced a 75% loyalty discount on Complete Edition for existing Steam owners from 13 October 2026 through 12 November 2026. That is a fixed-date offer, not a permanent entitlement. Because the price and eligibility are controlled by Steam and can change, open the Complete Edition store page while signed in to the owning account and verify the displayed price before relying on the discount.

The discount does not alter the installation steps for an already owned original. It is relevant only if you are deciding whether to buy Complete Edition, add its eligible content, or obtain the bundle after the standalone product stopped accepting new purchases.

Troubleshooting by symptom

“I owned Shogun 2, but Steam shows only a purchase option.”

First verify the account. Licenses are tied to the Steam account that bought or activated the game. Check purchase history, remove Library filters, restart Steam, and search for the exact title. If the original entitlement still does not appear, open a Steam account/library support case and contact SEGA support rather than purchasing again.

“I bought Complete Edition on Epic, Microsoft Store, or GOG. Where is the Steam install?”

There is no automatic cross-store conversion. SEGA describes those storefront purchases as Complete Edition only. Install and launch the version from the store where you bought it; a Steam Library entry requires a Steam entitlement.

“My old Workshop mods disappeared after I installed Complete Edition.”

Check that you launched the original entry, not Complete Edition. The original mod setup remains unchanged, while Complete Edition uses Mod.io and does not accept original-game mods as compatible packages. Keep the installations and their mod files separate.

“The Blood Pack is missing.”

That is expected in the Complete Edition bundle: SEGA identifies the Blood Pack as excluded because of age-rating requirements. The exclusion is separate from whether the base game installs correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The game is still on the store, so can I buy the old standalone version?”

The store page may remain visible, but SEGA says standalone purchasing ended at the stated 28 September 2026 time. Use the Complete Edition purchase path on Steam if you are a new buyer who needs the original game.

Recommended decision path

  1. You owned the original on Steam: use that account’s Library entry and install the original directly.
  2. You did not own it and want the original Steam app: buy Complete Edition on Steam, then install the original entry supplied with that entitlement.
  3. You already bought Complete Edition elsewhere: use that storefront’s Complete Edition installation; do not expect a Steam license.
  4. You rely on legacy mods: keep using the original installation and do not move its files into Complete Edition.
  5. You are considering the loyalty offer: check the signed-in Steam price and eligibility before 12 November 2026; do not treat the announced percentage as an ongoing price after that date.

What you should expect after installation

An existing owner should be able to launch the original game normally from Steam after the download completes. The delisting does not require a special offline installer, a second account, or a replacement key. The important distinction is selecting the original app and preserving its legacy mod environment.

Complete Edition is the purchase mechanism for new Steam customers, but it should not be treated as a universal replacement across stores. Steam’s bundle includes the original; Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, and GOG purchases are identified by SEGA as Complete Edition only. That storefront distinction, the Blood Pack exclusion, and the incompatible mod systems explain most post-delisting confusion.
