Install Munin as a master on the VPS that will collect metrics and publish graphs, then install munin-node on every VPS you want to monitor. On Debian or Ubuntu, the basic packages are munin for the master and munin-node for monitored systems. Munin nodes listen on TCP port 4949 by default, so restrict that port to the master’s IP address before collecting data.
The procedure below covers a one-VPS self-monitoring setup and a central master monitoring several VPSs, including firewall rules, node registration, plugin activation, Apache report access and the common reasons graphs remain empty.

Munin uses a simple master-and-node architecture. The master connects to nodes, requests metric values from their plugins, stores the results and generates graph pages. A node exposes local measurements such as CPU, memory, disk and network activity when the corresponding plugins are enabled.
A single VPS can run both roles. Install munin there to collect and graph its own data, and install munin-node as well so the local system exposes metrics to its master process. In a multi-VPS deployment, put the master on one administration or monitoring VPS and install only munin-node on each monitored VPS.

The node daemon listens on TCP 4949 by default. Treat that port as an internal monitoring endpoint, not a public web service: permit connections only from the master’s address in both Munin’s configuration and the VPS or cloud firewall.
Prepare the VPSs
Choose the master
Select a VPS that can reach every monitored node and has enough storage for the generated reports. It also needs a web server if people will view the graphs through a browser. The master can be one of the production VPSs for a small installation, although a separate monitoring VPS limits the effect of a production outage on monitoring.

Record addresses and names
For each node, record the address that the master can actually reach. A private address is preferable when the VPSs share a private network; otherwise use the node’s public address and apply a narrowly scoped firewall rule. Decide on a stable display name such as web-01.example. Munin uses the name in the master configuration as the label shown in reports.
Check administrative access
You need a root shell or an account that can run sudo. The commands in this guide use sudo. Apply package updates through your normal maintenance process, and make sure outbound traffic from the master to TCP 4949 is permitted before troubleshooting Munin itself.
Install the Munin master
Run these commands on the VPS that will collect and graph data:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install muninThe Debian/Ubuntu package creates the master configuration under /etc/munin. The package also supplies the scheduled collection and report-generation components. If this same VPS should monitor itself, install the node package on it as described in the next section.
Install munin-node on each monitored VPS
On every VPS whose metrics you want to collect, run:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install munin-nodeInstalling the node package does not automatically make the VPS safe to expose. The daemon is designed to start at boot and listen on TCP 4949, so configure its allow list and the network firewall before permitting the master to connect.
Lock down the node listener
Configure Munin’s allow rule
Edit /etc/munin/munin-node.conf on each node. Permit the master’s address with either a regular-expression rule:

Replace the example address with the master’s real reachable address. Keep the rule exact; a broad network range or unrestricted rule allows other systems to request plugin output.
Allow the port in the VPS or cloud firewall
Create an inbound rule for TCP 4949 on every node, with the source restricted to the master’s private or public IP. Apply the same restriction in any cloud security group or provider firewall. Do not open 4949 to the entire internet merely because Munin needs remote access. The node’s allow rule and the network firewall are complementary: both must permit the intended master, and either one can block an unintended client.
Restart after changing the node configuration
sudo systemctl restart munin-node.serviceCheck the service status after the restart. If it fails, inspect the package’s service output and logs for a configuration syntax error, an invalid address rule or a plugin permission problem. Unit names and log locations can vary with the distribution package, so use the service manager and package documentation on the specific VPS image.
Register each node on the master
On the master, edit /etc/munin/munin.conf. Add one node block for every monitored VPS:

address 203.0.113.20The bracketed value is the hostname or label that appears in Munin’s reports. The indented address value is the node address reachable from the master. Repeat the block with a unique label for each additional VPS.
Be precise with the address. A typo, an address reachable only from another network or a firewall rule tied to the wrong master IP prevents collection even when the node service is healthy. If you change a node’s address later, update this block and verify the firewall and allow or cidr_allow rule at the same time.
Enable and manage Munin plugins
Munin collects metrics through plugins. A plugin becomes active when a symlink for it exists in /etc/munin/plugins; the link points to the plugin implementation supplied by the package or an installed plugin collection.
See what the node can use
Run the suggestion command on the node:
sudo munin-node-configure --suggestThe output identifies plugins that appear compatible with the VPS. Suggestions are based on what the tool can detect, so review them rather than assuming every suggestion is useful for your workload. A database, web server or mail service may require its own plugin prerequisites and permissions.
Apply automatic suggestions
The Munin documentation provides this command for applying suggestions from the contrib and auto families:
sudo munin-node-configure --shell --families=contrib,auto | sudo sh -xReview the commands before executing them on a production host if you need strict change control. The result should be new symlinks under /etc/munin/plugins. You can inspect that directory directly to confirm which plugins are enabled.
Restart after plugin changes
Restart the node whenever you add or remove plugin links:

sudo systemctl restart munin-node.serviceThe node discovers its plugins at restart. A link that exists but points to a missing executable, lacks required permissions or needs a service-specific configuration can still produce an error; check the node status and logs if a graph remains absent.
Serve Munin reports with Apache2
The Ubuntu Munin example uses Apache2 to publish the generated report directory. Install Apache2 on the master before attempting browser access:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install apache2The Munin package supplies the relevant Apache configuration on supported Debian/Ubuntu installations. Open the report URL shown by the package configuration from the master itself first. This confirms that report generation and the local web server work before you expose access to another machine.
Permit remote viewers deliberately
Apache configurations commonly include Require local, which permits only requests originating on the master. If an administrator must view graphs from a workstation or another network, change the Munin Apache access rule to permit only that viewer’s IP address or an explicitly intended network. Do not replace the rule with unrestricted access unless the reports are protected by another trusted access-control layer.

A browser denial at this stage is an Apache authorization issue, not necessarily a Munin collection failure.
Verify collection from end to end
- Confirm the node service: On each node, check that
munin-node.serviceis running after installation and configuration. - Confirm the listener: Verify that the node is listening on TCP 4949 and that the VPS or cloud firewall allows the master’s address.
- Confirm the master address: Compare the node block in
/etc/munin/munin.confwith the address used by the node’s allow rule and firewall. - Confirm plugins: Inspect
/etc/munin/pluginsand runmunin-node-configure --suggestif expected metrics are missing. - Open the reports: View the generated pages locally on the master, then test remote access only after Apache authorization is configured.
- Allow time for data: New installations do not contain historical measurements immediately. Wait for collection cycles and reload the report before judging a newly created graph.
Troubleshoot missing nodes and empty graphs
No data from a node
Start with the three values that must agree: the node address in munin.conf, the source address allowed by allow or cidr_allow, and the source permitted by the firewall. A mismatch in any one of them blocks collection. Check TCP 4949 reachability from the master and confirm that the node service restarted after its configuration changed.
Graphs are empty or incomplete
Immediately after installation, Munin has no historical data to draw. Let normal collection run for a while and then reload the report. If only some graphs are absent, inspect the enabled plugin links and run the suggestion command. A plugin may not apply to the VPS, may require a local service or may fail because of permissions.

A plugin is missing
Run:
sudo munin-node-configure --suggestCompare the suggestions with the symlinks in /etc/munin/plugins. If you add or remove a link, restart munin-node.service; otherwise the running node may not discover the change. Review service output for a plugin-specific error rather than enabling every available plugin indiscriminately.
The browser shows “forbidden” or “access denied”
Review the Apache Munin configuration for Require local. That directive intentionally blocks remote browsers. Add only the intended viewer IP or network, reload Apache and test again. Keep this web-access rule separate from the node’s TCP 4949 rule: Apache controls report viewing, while the node allow list and firewall control metric collection.
The node service will not restart
Look for malformed allow-list syntax, an invalid CIDR value, a plugin whose executable or configuration is broken, or a permission error. Restore the last known-good configuration, restart the service and then add changes one at a time. Because package layouts differ, use the service status output and logs provided by the VPS distribution to identify the exact failing file.
Monitor several VPSs safely
For each additional VPS, repeat the node installation, allow-list configuration, firewall restriction and service restart. Then add a separate node block to the master configuration with a unique display name and the node’s reachable address. Keep the master’s source IP consistent; if the master moves or changes network interfaces, update every node’s allow rule and firewall at the same time.
Use private networking where available to avoid sending monitoring traffic over the public internet. If public addressing is unavoidable, the exact single-host rule and a provider firewall restriction reduce exposure. Do not confuse the web report endpoint with the node endpoint: viewers need the Apache report service, while only the master needs TCP 4949 access to nodes.

Package installation versus building from source
Debian and Ubuntu provide Munin packages, which is the documented path in this guide and keeps files, services and updates aligned with the distribution. A source build can be appropriate when an organization requires a version or plugin not provided by its distribution, but it also requires you to manage installation paths, service startup and upgrades yourself. Unless that control is necessary, the packaged master and node roles are the lower-maintenance choice for a VPS.
Operational checklist
- Choose one master that can reach every node.
- Install
muninon the master andmunin-nodeon each monitored VPS. - Allow only the master’s address in
/etc/munin/munin-node.conf. - Restrict TCP 4949 in every VPS or cloud firewall to the master.
- Add one correctly addressed node block to
/etc/munin/munin.confper VPS. - Use
munin-node-configure --suggestand verify symlinks in/etc/munin/plugins. - Restart
munin-node.serviceafter node or plugin changes. - Install Apache2 on the master if browser reports are required.
- Change Apache’s local-only rule only for explicitly authorized viewers.
- Allow collection cycles to run before expecting historical graphs.
Final setup result
A correct installation has a master collecting from explicitly registered nodes, nodes accepting requests only from that master, plugins represented by active symlinks and reports served to authorized browsers. When a graph is absent, troubleshoot in that order: address and port reachability, node access control, plugin activation and finally report-server authorization.
