The HP LaserJet Pro P1108 can often be installed on a Windows PC without downloading anything: connect the printer by USB, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, and select Add device. Windows may install a basic driver automatically.
If Windows does not find the printer, or if printing works but options and print quality are limited, install the package from HP’s support site or update the driver through Windows. The P1108 is a USB printer, so you need a standard USB-A-to-USB-B printer cable.
Before installing the P1108 driver
Check these items first:
- Turn on the HP LaserJet Pro P1108 and clear any paper or toner error.
- Use a USB-A-to-USB-B cable. The square USB-B connector goes into the printer.
- Connect the printer directly to the PC rather than through a USB hub during setup.
- Know which Windows edition and system architecture the PC uses. In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > About. Check Windows specifications for the edition and version, and Device specifications > System type for the processor type.
HP’s support page identifies the product as HP LaserJet Pro P1108 Printer and also lists the related HP LaserJet Pro P1106/P1108 Printer series. Its operating-system selector currently includes Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10, 11, and Linux. If your operating system is not listed, HP may not provide a driver for it.

This is the quickest method for a directly connected P1108 and is the best first choice on most standard Intel or AMD Windows PCs.

- Turn on the printer.
- Connect the USB cable to the printer and the PC.
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Under Add a printer & scanner, select Add device.
- Wait while Windows searches for the P1108. Windows may add it automatically; you may not need to select another Add device button.
- When the printer appears under the installed-printer list, select it and print a test page.
Windows may initially install a basic driver. That can be enough for ordinary black-and-white printing, but advanced settings may be unavailable. If Windows shows a Find drivers button beside the printer, use it. Windows Update is Microsoft’s preferred source for a fuller or newer driver.
Method 2: Install the HP driver package
Use HP’s package when Windows cannot discover the printer, the automatic installation produces an unusable queue, or you need the printer-specific driver.
- Open HP’s HP LaserJet Pro P1108 driver page.
- Select the P1108 if HP asks you to choose a product or series.
- Choose the Windows version from the operating-system selector, then select Next.
- Expand the Driver section and select Download for the available package.
- Open the downloaded file from the Windows Downloads folder.
- Accept the license terms and follow the installer’s instructions.
HP’s setup documentation also describes the web path hp.com/support/ljp1100series: select the printer or category, choose Drivers, select the operating system, select Next, then choose the driver and select Download.

If the HP installer offers Configure to print using USB, choose that option. Do not connect the USB cable until the installer asks for it. Connecting the printer too early can prevent the installer from detecting it correctly.
- Disconnect the USB cable from the PC if it is already attached.
- Start the HP installer.
- Select Configure to print using USB, if shown.
- Continue until the installer displays the USB connection prompt.
- Connect the A-to-B USB cable and allow setup to finish.
HP’s guide gives a specific additional warning for Windows 7 and earlier: do not connect the cable before installation. If it was connected already, follow the installer’s instruction to restart the printer when prompted.
Install or update the driver through Windows Update
If the printer appears in Windows but uses a generic or incomplete driver, try the built-in update path:

- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP LaserJet P1108.
- Select Manage.
- Select Update driver.
- Allow Windows to search for and install an available driver.
Restart the printer and print a test page after the update. If no update is offered, Windows may already have the latest driver available through its catalog, or HP may not provide a newer package for your Windows version.
If Windows cannot find the P1108
First, check the simple causes:
- Confirm that the printer is powered on.
- Try another USB port, preferably a port on the PC itself.
- Try another USB-A-to-B cable. A charging-only or damaged cable will not work.
- Disconnect other USB devices temporarily.
- Restart both the printer and the PC.
Then try manual discovery:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for the search to complete.
- Select The printer that I want isn’t listed.
- In the Add Printer window, select Add a new device manually.
- Follow the wizard to create the printer connection.
Do not assume that a failed automatic search means the printer is unusable. It may be a cable, USB-port, spooler, or driver-detection problem.
Remove and reinstall a broken printer entry
If the P1108 is listed but jobs remain stuck, disappear, or produce unreadable pages, remove the existing entry and reinstall it.
- Go to Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP LaserJet P1108.
- Select Remove.
- Restart the PC.
- Return to Printers & scanners.
- Select Add a printer or scanner or Add device.
- Allow Windows to install the recommended driver, or run the HP installer and connect the cable only when prompted.
Last resort: use the legacy Add Printer Driver Wizard
The legacy wizard can help with an older printer, but it only adds a driver to Windows. It does not create the P1108 printer entry. You must add the printer separately afterward.
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Scroll down and select Printer server properties.
- Open the Drivers tab and select Add….
- In Add Printer Driver Wizard, select Next >.
- Choose the processor architecture that matches the PC.
- On the Printer Driver Selection page, select Windows Update.
- Choose the manufacturer and the matching HP LaserJet P1108 model, if listed.
- Select Next >, then select Finish.
- Return to Printers & scanners and add the printer as a separate device.
Use Windows Update or HP’s installer before this route. The wizard is a compatibility option, not the normal installation method.
Special case: ARM-based Windows PCs
On ARM-based Windows devices, including some Copilot+ PCs, a manufacturer’s installer may fail to add the printer even when the printer itself works. Microsoft recommends using Windows’ printer setup instead:

- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Let Windows detect and install the directly connected P1108.
You can check the processor information at Start > Settings > System > About. The System type field indicates whether the device uses an ARM-based processor. On these systems, avoid relying on manual HP installer setup if Windows’ built-in installation works.
What to do after installation
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP LaserJet P1108.
- Select Print a test page, if available.
- Open the printer’s preferences and confirm paper size, orientation, and print density.
- Print a short document before sending a large job.
If the test page prints correctly, the driver and USB connection are working. If a document application still prints to another device, choose the P1108 in that application’s print dialog or set it as the default printer in Windows.
Windows 10 note
HP’s driver page still lists Windows 10 as an operating-system choice, but Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. If you remain on Windows 10, use the HP package that HP provides for your edition, but do not treat the listing as evidence that Windows 10 itself is still supported by Microsoft.
Do you need a command?
No. The verified installation routes use the HP graphical installer, Windows Settings, Windows Update, or the graphical Add Printer Driver Wizard. A command-line installation is not required for the HP LaserJet Pro P1108.

Does Windows 11 support the HP LaserJet P1108?
HP’s current P1108 support page includes Windows 11 in its operating-system selector. However, the page does not clearly identify a dedicated Windows 11 package or expose a package version and release date. Start with Windows 11’s automatic printer installation, then use Windows Update or the HP package shown for your system.
Can I install the P1108 without downloading an HP driver?
Yes. Connect the printer by USB, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, and select Add device. Windows may install a compatible basic driver automatically.

Why does the HP installer say the printer is not connected?
The USB cable may have been connected before the installer reached its connection prompt. Disconnect it, restart the installer, choose Configure to print using USB, and reconnect the cable only when prompted. Also try a different USB port or USB-A-to-USB-B cable.

Why is the P1108 installed but missing advanced options?
Windows may have installed a basic driver. Select the printer under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, choose Manage, and select Update driver. You can also check HP’s support page for an available driver package.
What should I do if the HP installer fails on an ARM PC?
Use Windows’ built-in setup instead. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and select Add device. Microsoft identifies this as the preferred workaround for manufacturer installers that fail on ARM-based Windows PCs.
Does the Add Printer Driver Wizard install the printer?
No. It adds the driver to Windows only. After finishing the wizard, return to Printers & scanners and add the P1108 as a separate printer.
The Bottom Line
For most Windows 11 PCs, connect the P1108 by USB and use Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Add device. If Windows does not detect it, download the available package from HP, but connect the USB cable only when the HP installer requests it. Use Windows Update before attempting the legacy Add Printer Driver Wizard.
