The most reliable Froxlor installation is on a fresh Debian or Ubuntu VPS with root access, a public IP address and a dedicated DNS name. For most single-server deployments, run Froxlor’s official quick-start installer; use the signed APT repository when you want package-managed installation, or the manual archive route when you need to fit an existing web stack.
Before starting, choose a supported operating system, point the Froxlor hostname at the VPS, allow the required network ports and decide whether Apache or nginx, MariaDB or MySQL, and PHP-FPM or FCGID match your design. Save every database and administrator password printed during setup because the quick-start process does not display them again.

What you need before installing Froxlor
Froxlor manages and generates configuration for web, mail and FTP services. Its documentation therefore recommends Debian or Ubuntu rather than an arbitrary Linux distribution. Start with a new VPS whenever possible; an existing server may already contain conflicting virtual hosts, PHP modules, database settings or mail daemons.
Supported VPS operating systems
The current package guidance lists these base images:

Check the codename on the running VPS before adding a repository. A source entry for the wrong codename can install incompatible packages or leave APT unable to resolve dependencies.
Root access, hostname and DNS
- Use a VPS account with root privileges, or an administrative user that can run commands through
sudo. - Assign a public IPv4 address. Add IPv6 as well if you intend to serve services over it.
- Create a dedicated fully qualified domain name (FQDN), such as
panel.example.net, for the Froxlor system itself. Do not reuse this name for a customer website or mail service. - Create DNS A and, where applicable, AAAA records that resolve the FQDN to the VPS before running the installer. The quick-start flags
--hostname,--ipv4and--ipv6let you state these values explicitly. - Know which provider firewall or security-group controls protect the VPS. At minimum, HTTP and HTTPS must reach the panel and hosted sites; mail and FTP ports are needed only for the services you enable.
DNS propagation can take longer than the time needed to create the VPS. Test the name from a separate network and confirm it returns the intended public address, not an old server.
Froxlor’s supported software stack
The current compatibility information covers Apache2 or nginx, PHP 7.4 through 8.5, and MySQL 8.4 or MariaDB 11.7. PHP must provide the extensions Froxlor uses:

Froxlor’s PHP guidance says that using multiple PHP versions with mod_php is not possible and advises avoiding mod_php for security reasons. Use PHP-FPM or FCGID instead. New installations enable PHP-FPM by default according to the project homepage.
Choose an installation method
There are three practical routes. The first two are maintained installation paths; the archive method is a fallback for administrators who must integrate Froxlor into a manually prepared stack.

Option A: install with the official quick-start script
1. Confirm the VPS and DNS are ready
Use a fresh supported Debian or Ubuntu image, set the system hostname, and verify that the dedicated FQDN resolves to the VPS public IP. Do this before launching the script so certificate issuance and generated virtual hosts use the right name.
2. Run the guided installer
As root, execute the official command:
curl -fsSL https://get.froxlor.org | bashThe script starts with a single-host profile. Its documented defaults install Apache 2.4 with PHP-FPM, MariaDB, ProFTPd, Postfix, Dovecot and automatic Let’s Encrypt certificates. The installer then asks for the values needed to complete the configuration.
The command downloads and executes a remote script as root. Read the current Froxlor quick-start documentation and verify that you are on a supported, clean server before running it. Do not pipe an unreviewed command into a production host that already runs unrelated services.

3. Select advanced options when needed
The quick-start guide supports flags for common variations:
--webserver=nginxselects nginx instead of the default Apache profile.--mysql=mariadbexplicitly selects MariaDB.--hostnamesupplies the dedicated Froxlor FQDN.--ipv4and--ipv6provide the public addresses to use.--unattendedsuppresses interactive prompts.
Use the flags supported by the version of the installer you are executing; distribution support and installer behavior can change. Supplying a web-server or database choice does not remove the need to prepare DNS and firewall rules.

The documented unattended pattern is:
curl -fsSL https://get.froxlor.org | bash -s -- --unattendedUnattended mode is appropriate for repeatable provisioning only after you have supplied all required variables and confirmed DNS. It skips the prompts that would otherwise catch a missing hostname, address or service selection. A typo can therefore produce a partially configured server that is harder to diagnose.
5. Capture the credentials shown in the terminal
At the end of the quick-start process, the CLI displays the generated database and administrator passwords. Copy them into a password manager or another protected store before closing the session. The quick-start instructions warn that these values are not displayed later. Treat the terminal transcript as sensitive: it contains credentials for the control panel and database.
Option B: install Froxlor from the signed APT repository
The repository path gives you an explicit package source and lets the operating system’s package manager track Froxlor and its dependencies.
1. Install repository prerequisites
On a fresh Debian or Ubuntu VPS, install transport, release-detection, certificate, download and key-management tools:
apt -y install apt-transport-https lsb-release ca-certificates curl gnupg2. Install Froxlor’s repository key
Download the signed key into the system keyring directory:
curl -sSLo /usr/share/keyrings/deb.froxlor.org-froxlor.gpg https://deb.froxlor.org/froxlor.gpgKeeping the key in /usr/share/keyrings allows the source entry to trust this repository specifically rather than enabling an unrestricted legacy key.

3. Add the source for Debian
On Debian, write the source entry with the codename reported by lsb_release:

On Ubuntu, use the Ubuntu repository path instead:
sh -c 'echo "deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/deb.froxlor.org-froxlor.gpg] https://deb.froxlor.org/ubuntu $(lsb_release -sc) main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/froxlor.list'The command automatically inserts a codename such as noble or jammy. Ubuntu 20.04 (focal) is marked deprecated in the current package guide, so use a newer supported image for a new deployment.
5. Update the package index and install Froxlor
apt update && apt upgrade
apt install froxlorReview the package manager’s proposed changes, especially on a VPS that is not completely empty. The Froxlor package installs required components such as the web server. After installation, continue through the general Froxlor setup and create the privileged database user requested by the installer.
6. Complete the web and database setup
Open the dedicated Froxlor hostname after the package installation has configured the web service. Run the requirement check, provide the privileged database credentials and allow Froxlor to create its unprivileged database user. Keep the database account restricted to the purpose described by the installer; do not substitute a shared application account.
Option C: use the manual archive method
The manual path is useful when neither the quick-start profile nor the distribution package matches an existing design. It requires more administration because you are responsible for every prerequisite and service integration.
1. Prepare the prerequisites
- Install a recent Apache2 or nginx release.
- Install a supported PHP release and all required extensions, including
session,ctype,xml,filter,posix,mbstring,curl,gmpandjson. - Install MySQL 8.4 or MariaDB 11.7.
- Create a dedicated FQDN that is not used by customer websites or mail.
- Ensure the web server can use PHP-FPM or FCGID if more than one PHP version will be offered.
2. Place and extract the stable archive
Download the current stable Froxlor archive using the project’s published download instructions, place it in the intended web root, extract it and remove the archive after extraction. Keep the extracted directory in the document root configured for the dedicated virtual host.
Set ownership to the account used by the web server. The common account is www-data on Debian and Ubuntu; some Apache installations use apache. Confirm the actual service account on your VPS rather than copying an ownership command from another distribution.

3. Configure the virtual host
Create a virtual host or server block whose document root points to the extracted Froxlor directory and whose server name is the dedicated FQDN. Enable the PHP handler appropriate to your design, reload the web server and verify that the hostname reaches Froxlor rather than an unrelated default site.

The web installer needs a privileged database account because it creates and removes customer databases and users. The manual guide demonstrates an account named froxroot. Create an equivalent account with the privileges required by Froxlor, choose a new production password instead of the guide’s example, and store it securely.
5. Finish in the browser
Open the Froxlor path at the dedicated FQDN. Let the requirement check identify missing PHP extensions or incompatible settings, correct those issues, then enter the privileged database credentials. Froxlor uses that account to create its own unprivileged database user and complete the installation.
Complete the first-run configuration
Run the requirement check before adding customers
Do not create customer accounts or domains until the installer reports that the web server, PHP modules, database connection and filesystem permissions meet its requirements. A failed requirement check is normally safer to fix immediately than to work around after production sites exist.
Review generated service configuration
Inspect the virtual-host and PHP-FPM settings generated by Froxlor. Confirm that the intended PHP version is attached to each site, that sockets or listening ports exist, and that the web server reload completed without syntax errors. Keep PHP-FPM or FCGID for multi-version hosting; do not switch to mod_php to solve a version-selection problem.

The quick-start profile can request automatic Let’s Encrypt certificates. Certificate issuance still depends on a public DNS record and reachable HTTP or HTTPS ports. If issuance fails, correct DNS and firewall rules first, then rerun the supported certificate procedure rather than disabling TLS for the control panel.
Enable only services you intend to operate
The default quick-start profile includes mail and FTP components. If your VPS will host only websites, review whether Postfix, Dovecot or ProFTPd should remain enabled and exposed. Removing a service changes the generated configuration, so make that decision in Froxlor’s service settings and verify the resulting firewall rules.

Use this sequence after the installer completes:
- Resolve the dedicated FQDN from an external network and verify that it returns the VPS public IPv4 address and, if used, the correct IPv6 address.
- Open the hostname over HTTPS and confirm that the Froxlor login page loads without a certificate-name warning.
- Sign in with the administrator credential saved from the installer.
- Check that the selected Apache or nginx service is running and that its configuration test passes before reloading.
- Confirm the configured PHP version and required extensions from the Froxlor requirement or system information pages.
- Verify database connectivity and that Froxlor’s unprivileged database user exists.
- If mail or FTP is enabled, test only the ports and protocols you intentionally opened in the VPS firewall.
- Create a non-production test domain, issue its certificate, publish a small test file and verify that the expected PHP-FPM pool serves it.
- Take a provider snapshot or an external backup after the initial configuration and before onboarding customer data.
Troubleshoot common installation failures
The repository reports an unknown release
Inspect lsb_release -sc and compare it with Froxlor’s current support table. Do not replace a missing codename with a different release merely to make APT continue. Upgrade the VPS to a supported Debian or Ubuntu image, or use the quick-start path documented for that release.

The hostname opens the wrong site
Check the A and AAAA records, local resolver results and the web server’s server-name configuration. Remove stale DNS records and ensure the dedicated Froxlor name is not also assigned to a customer virtual host.

Let’s Encrypt cannot validate the server
Make sure the FQDN resolves publicly to this VPS, inbound HTTP/HTTPS is allowed by both the provider security group and the host firewall, and no other service is intercepting the challenge path. Certificate automation cannot correct a DNS or routing error.
The browser reports missing PHP modules
Install the missing extension for the PHP version actually used by Froxlor, restart or reload the relevant PHP-FPM service, and rerun the requirement check. Installing an extension for a different PHP version will not satisfy the active pool.
The web installer rejects database credentials
Test the credentials against the selected MySQL or MariaDB server, confirm that the server is listening on the expected local socket or address, and verify that the privileged account has permission to create and remove databases and users. In the manual method, ensure the account name and password entered in the browser exactly match the account you created.
The quick-start password was lost
The installer does not print its generated database and administrator passwords again. Search the protected record or terminal transcript where you saved them; do not assume a default password. If the credentials cannot be recovered, use Froxlor’s current documented password-reset or database-administration procedure rather than repeatedly rerunning the installer on a live server.
Multiple PHP versions cannot be selected
Verify that each installed PHP version has a working PHP-FPM service or FCGID configuration and that Froxlor is not using mod_php. A single Apache module cannot safely provide the version isolation required for this arrangement.
Security and maintenance after installation
- Restrict SSH and database access with the VPS firewall and provider security-group rules.
- Keep Debian or Ubuntu security updates current and review Froxlor release notes before upgrading.
- Protect the administrator and database credentials in a password manager; never leave them in shell history, tickets or chat.
- Use the dedicated panel FQDN only for Froxlor so certificates, redirects and access-control rules remain predictable.
- Review generated virtual hosts and PHP-FPM pools before adding a customer domain.
- Back up both hosted data and the Froxlor database, and test that a backup can actually be restored.
- Take a VPS snapshot after a known-good configuration, while remembering that a snapshot is not a substitute for an independent backup.
- Recheck compatibility before changing the operating-system release, PHP branch, database server or web server.
Version and support caveat
Froxlor’s distribution matrix, PHP and database ranges, repository key, installer flags and generated defaults are operational details that can change. The project’s get-started information currently identifies stable release 2.3.15 (2026). Confirm the current release and compatibility pages immediately before executing these commands, especially on a new VPS image.
