FiveM does not include Emergency Lighting System (ELS) as a built-in feature. You install it as a separate resource, then add vehicle-specific configuration files and start the resource from server.cfg. First choose the project you actually downloaded: ELS-FiveM uses Lua VCF files, while MISS-ELS and its MIX-ELS fork use a different configuration layout. Their files are not interchangeable.
Choose the ELS project before copying anything
“ELS” is used for several community resources rather than one official FiveM package. Installing instructions depend on the project name in the folder you downloaded. The three names most likely to cause confusion are below.

ELS-FiveM originated with MrDaGree and is commonly distributed through maintained forks, including a mirror identified as rxbindotmp3/fivem-els. MISS-ELS is a matsn0w fork of IIS-EmergencyLS, with documentation identified as clapham/MISS-ELS. MIX-ELS is a heavily modified fork based on MISS-ELS. Treat those as separate resources when reading release notes or moving files.
What you need before installation
- A FiveM server that you can stop, edit, and restart.
- Access to the server’s complete
resourcesdirectory and the file that starts resources, normallyserver.cfg. - The ELS resource archive or repository folder, extracted without an extra nesting level.
- Emergency vehicle models installed separately. ELS drives lighting, patterns, indicators, and (where supported) sirens; it does not supply the vehicle’s YFT or YTD model files.
- A VCF configuration for every emergency vehicle model you intend to use.
- A recent backup of the resource folder and
server.cfg. Stop the server before replacing configuration files so a panel or process cannot overwrite your changes.
Keep a local copy of the original archive. If a later update changes configuration names, you can compare the new example files with your working files instead of guessing which settings were removed.

If you still need a server to run ELS on, Godlike.Host’s FiveM hosting gives you a Pterodactyl-based panel with SFTP access, so you can upload resource folders and edit server.cfg yourself. You can also try the panel on a free 1 GB FiveM server (10 slots); it must be extended every 3 hours, has limited panel features and sits in one location. It is not on Cfx.re’s list of authorized FiveM hosts (fivem.net, 10 Oct 2026).
Install ELS-FiveM
Use this procedure when the extracted folder contains files such as vcf.default.lua and a vcf directory. Do not apply these filenames to MISS-ELS or MIX-ELS.
1. Download and extract the complete resource
Obtain ELS-FiveM from its project repository or a maintained fork, then extract the entire folder. The folder should retain its scripts, manifest, configuration files, and subdirectories. Do not upload only the Lua files or the inner client directory.
2. Create the active VCF file
- Open the extracted ELS-FiveM folder.
- Make a copy of
vcf.default.lua. - Rename the copy to
vcf.lua. - Leave
vcf.default.luauntouched in the same directory.
The project README states: “Create a file called ‘vcf.lua’ and copy the file contents of ‘vcf.default.lua’ into that file, but do not delete the default file.” The resource reads the active file; the default is retained as a template for resets and updates.
3. Add vehicle configuration files
Place the VCF file for each supported emergency vehicle inside the resource’s vcf directory. The vehicle model name and the VCF filename must match the naming expected by that resource and vehicle pack. One generic VCF cannot reliably configure every model because light bars, extra indices, sirens, and pattern channels differ between vehicles.
If a vehicle pack includes its own VCF, use that file rather than copying a file from a different model. If no VCF is supplied, inspect the project’s format and create or adapt one carefully; a file intended for MISS-ELS or MIX-ELS is not a drop-in replacement for ELS-FiveM.

4. Upload the folder to resources
Stop the server, then upload the whole ELS-FiveM folder under the server’s resources directory. Keep the resource name consistent with the folder name you will use in server.cfg. A typical layout is:

└── vehicle-model.vcfSome hosting panels place framework resources inside a QBCore-specific path. Follow your server’s existing resource layout, but do not assume that a framework-specific script is portable: a standalone ELS-FiveM installation is not automatically compatible with another framework.
5. Start it from server.cfg
Add the resource after the other resources have been declared:
ensure ELS-FiveMThe text after ensure must exactly match the resource folder name, including capitalization where your host’s filesystem distinguishes it. Save the file, then restart the server, or run the equivalent start command in your txAdmin or hosting-panel console.
6. Test an equipped vehicle
Join the server with a vehicle whose model and VCF are installed. Confirm that the resource starts without a manifest or script error, the vehicle spawns, and the light controls respond. Test every stage that the vehicle supports: primary lights, secondary lights, takedown or alley lights, indicators, horn, and siren tones. A successful resource start does not prove that a particular vehicle has a correct VCF.
Install MISS-ELS
Choose this path when the release contains config.example.lua and its documentation identifies the resource as MISS-ELS. Its setup is not a renamed ELS-FiveM installation.

1. Download the latest release and extract it
Download a MISS-ELS release, extract it without removing any included subfolders, and read the release notes before copying files. Upgrades can require edits to config.lua, so do not overwrite a working configuration blindly.
2. Create config.lua from the example
- Locate
config.example.luain the extracted resource. - Copy it in the same directory.
- Rename the copy to
config.lua. - Edit the new file using the options documented for that release.
MISS-ELS does not use ELS-FiveM’s vcf.default.lua workflow. Do not create a vcf.lua just because an older ELS tutorial tells you to.
3. Install the XML VCF files
MISS-ELS VCFs are XML files that hold the ELS configuration for one vehicle. Preserve the directory structure and naming convention supplied by the release or vehicle pack. Do not place Lua VCFs from ELS-FiveM into a MISS-ELS installation.

4. Copy the resource to resources
Stop the server and place the complete MISS-ELS folder under resources. Keep the manifest and every included dependency directory together. Rename the folder only if you also change the name used in server.cfg.
5. Start baseevents first
The MISS-ELS documentation requires baseevents to be started before MISS-ELS. Arrange the entries in server.cfg accordingly:
ensure baseevents
ensure MISS-ELSIf your resource folder uses a different name, replace MISS-ELS with that exact name. Starting MISS-ELS before baseevents can leave event hooks unavailable even when the resource appears in the console.

6. Restart and verify
Restart the server after saving the configuration. Check the console for missing-file, dependency, or XML parsing errors, then test a vehicle with its matching XML VCF. Features documented for MISS-ELS include per-vehicle patterns, custom sirens, and indicator control, but the result still depends on the vehicle model and its XML definition.

MIX-ELS is based on MISS-ELS but is substantially modified. Follow the files and directory names shipped with the MIX-ELS release, not a generic ELS tutorial.
- Do not copy
vcf.default.luaor another project’s default configuration into MIX-ELS. - The MIX-ELS documentation warns: “The "default" ELS configurations file will not work this resource.”
- Place vehicle XML files in the
xmlFilesdirectory when that folder is present, as specified by the fork’s documentation. - Use the fork’s own example configuration and release notes when upgrading.
- Keep the startup order required by the fork; if it retains MISS-ELS’s dependency, start
baseeventsfirst.
When diagnosing a MIX-ELS installation, identify the exact release and inspect its manifest and example files before changing paths. A file can be syntactically valid yet ignored because it belongs to a different fork.
Install the emergency vehicles separately
ELS resources do not install vehicle models. Add each emergency vehicle pack through its own resource folder, then provide the matching ELS configuration. A model normally includes YFT and YTD assets plus metadata; ELS does not replace those files.
- Install the vehicle resource according to its manifest and documentation.
- Confirm that the vehicle spawns by its model name before troubleshooting lights.
- Identify the VCF supplied for that model.
- Copy the VCF to the correct ELS-FiveM
vcfdirectory, MISS-ELS XML location, or MIX-ELSxmlFilesdirectory. - Restart or restart the affected resources, then test the vehicle in game.
If the vehicle spawns but has no lights, the model itself is not proof that ELS is configured. Check the model name, VCF filename, and the project-specific folder first.

Server.cfg ordering and resource names
FiveM loads resources by the names and order in your configuration. Use one startup entry for the ELS project you installed, not all three examples.

After editing, watch the startup console. A “resource not found” message usually means the folder is nested incorrectly or the ensure name does not match. A script or XML error means the resource was found but one of its files, dependencies, or settings is invalid.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The resource is not found
- Check that the resource folder is directly under a configured
resourcespath, not inside two copies of its own name. - Compare the folder name character-for-character with the
ensureline. - Confirm that the extracted archive contains a FiveM manifest.
The resource starts, but no vehicle has ELS lights
- Verify that the vehicle model is actually installed and spawns.
- Confirm that a VCF exists for that exact model.
- Check that the VCF is in the project’s required directory:
vcffor ELS-FiveM, the documented XML location for MISS-ELS, orxmlFilesfor MIX-ELS. - Make sure you did not use an XML file in ELS-FiveM or a Lua VCF in MISS-ELS.
ELS-FiveM reports a missing vcf.lua
Create vcf.lua by copying vcf.default.lua. Keep both files. Renaming the default instead of copying it removes the template the project expects.
MISS-ELS fails during startup
- Confirm that
baseeventsis started first. - Check that
config.luawas copied from the release’sconfig.example.lua. - Read the release notes for configuration changes, especially after an upgrade.
- Validate XML file names and placement against that release’s supplied structure.
MIX-ELS ignores a configuration
Remove files copied from other ELS projects and restore the configuration supplied by the MIX-ELS release. Its documentation explicitly rejects the generic default ELS configuration. Then verify that vehicle XML files are in xmlFiles and that the resource name in server.cfg is correct.
Lights work, but patterns or sirens are wrong
That normally indicates a vehicle-specific configuration issue rather than a failed resource start. Compare the VCF with the vehicle’s actual light extras, siren slots, and indicator setup. Replace it with the version supplied by the vehicle author when available; a configuration from a visually similar model can map channels incorrectly.
Only some players see the lights
Check client console errors and ensure every player is receiving the same resource version and vehicle files. Remove duplicate copies of the ELS resource from different resource paths so the server cannot start an unintended version.
Updating, changing, or removing ELS
Updating safely
- Stop the server and back up the entire current ELS folder, vehicle configurations, and
server.cfg. - Read the new release notes before replacing files.
- Compare example configuration files. MISS-ELS upgrades may require changes to
config.lua. - Copy your vehicle VCFs or XML files into the new project structure only when that release uses the same format.
- Start the server and test a representative vehicle before deleting the backup.
Changing projects
Remove or disable the old resource entry before enabling the new one. Keep the old folder outside the active resource path while testing, and convert or replace vehicle configuration files according to the new project’s format. Never run two ELS controllers against the same vehicle unless the project documentation explicitly supports it.
Removing ELS
Stop the server, remove its ensure line, and move the ELS resource folder out of the active resources directory. Vehicle models can remain installed, but they will no longer receive ELS behavior. Keep the backup if you may reinstall later.

- Project identified as ELS-FiveM, MISS-ELS, or MIX-ELS.
- Complete resource folder uploaded under a configured

Bottom line
Install ELS as a resource, not as a FiveM server feature. For ELS-FiveM, copy vcf.default.lua to vcf.lua, keep the default, place each vehicle’s VCF in vcf, and add ensure ELS-FiveM. For MISS-ELS, create config.lua from config.example.lua, use XML vehicle files, start baseevents first, and then ensure MISS-ELS. MIX-ELS requires its own fork-specific files and rejects the generic default configuration.
